To be clear, Lucy looked both ways before crossing the street.
But the corner to her left had a lot of foliage, so the visibility in that direction wasn’t great. Even so, whoever was driving that truck was clearly driving recklessly.
“It would be better if things like that didn’t happen. But they do, so it’s important to be able to be okay afterwards.”
“Even if the truth is there inside everybody, it still matters that you have a clear view of it. That’s a kind of wisdom, and an important kind.”
Oh wow Lucy really needed this hug.
She does not collapse on Ember crying because Ember is physically smaller than her but it comes kind of close.
“Save game,” she says quietly, once she has mostly gotten the trembling under control, because the idea of Ember forgetting this interaction is suddenly unbearable.
“Oh! I can do a few things. Usually when I have to say something it isn’t plain words, though.”
“Is that, like, normal spells? My thing is weirder than normal spells. Like, also it gives me some spells, but I haven’t had much occasion to use them, mostly it’s been the weirder stuff.”
“I know a few tricks that don’t count as spells! I don’t need to say anything to use them, though. What have you been doing?”
“…Okay, so, where I’m from, we have games that involve numerical approximations of adventuring, and my weird powers are more or less pretending to be one of those games.”
“One of the things it’s got a weird approximation of is adventuring parties, is it okay if I invite you to my weird power party?”
Lucy has only had Ember for five minutes but if anything happened to her Lucy would kill everyone in the city and then herself She doesn’t-mean-that less emphatically than she usually would, on account of the whole saves thing.
She invites Ember.
