"Thanks, I've got my arms full." He has a bit of a time getting his seatbelt off under Cricket but then carries him in.

She scoops the leftovers and brings them in and sets them on the table.

Cricket gets nestled in his catbed.

"You were saying?" Haru asks once that's squared away.

"Um, I really like you. Which is sort of complicated given the backlash issue but I would really like to make something work."

"Uh. It's not just because you're um...physically attractive. Although that is sort of obviously true.  Uh, you've been helping me out a lot, and also you're very smart and thoughtful."

She pauses to see if Haru has a reaction.

"...I'm not sure how best to react to this in a way that will not distress your future backlashed self."

"Well, that's the problem isn't it?"

"Yeah. I'm - flexible? - what's your best case scenario here -"

"Well, I would like to date you  but I really really don't know if it's feasible. But uh, I also don't know if I can avoid catching that kind of feelings anyway. It's probably easier to compartmentalize if we don't act on them but..."

"Is you having feelings the issue or is - communicating about them to me - the issue?"

"Mooostly the second thing, but communication can be very broad when I'm backlashed enough."

"How so?"

"Well, it's not just words. It's body language and expressions and all sorts of things. I hope I don't ever let it get bad enough that I have to convince myself not not to overthink whether people will read things into the colour of my shirt - I ended up just grabbing the first shirts I encountered when I was packing because then there isn't actually anything real to read into."

"Would it help to have a - script, to follow, for when you're backlashed, for what guiding to do and what kind of conversation to have, and just stick to that rigidly till you're comfortable going off-script?"

"Yeah, that does sound like it might help."

"You might have to write it, I don't know things like how well your CPR class will work at its intended secondary purpose."

"I should write most of it at least. And we will...take things slow."

"We can pretty much always do debriefs on dungeons and related discussion probably."

"It's conventional wisdom to not try to do dungeon debriefs right away while still backlashed but we can break that rule if we wanna."

"We can update the debrief afterwards if it seems warranted. I guess if something very upsetting happens I might need some time to calm down before I can talk about it. I can probably come up with other topics that will usually be safe. Literature ought to be mostly safe."

"And I still have Cricket and a phone, if you want me to talk to third parties while you're on your way down."

"Yeah. I can install a backlog of digital reading on my work phone when I finish getting that set up so I'll have a distraction and not just be awkwardly staring off into space if I'm not up for talking."

"Sounds like a plan. - also, people reading to me works with my backlash if I interrupt them with questions and comments all the time."

"That could work well as long as the reading material isn't too dense, I can pick reading material with that in mind. Maybe educational things that aren't super challenging. That way I might  actually gain something from reading it aloud and talking about it."
