Jisa digs in her pocket for a hair ribbon and - yes, she has one! She ties off the braid above the unraveled bit. :Thank you! Um, when did you learn to braid hair, or is that another thing elementals are born knowing?:

:I was wild a long time. I'm pretty old. I had friends:

:Right: Jisa winces a little. :I'm - sorry. That you got captured. It must've been horrible:

:It hasn't been my favorite decade:

Jisa blinks away sudden tears, her hands clenching around fistfuls of her tunic. :I'm going to find a way to fix it. I promise:

:That's very sweet of you: says Lightning.

Jisa can't tell if this response is because Lightning doesn't believe her, which...would be understandable, from the outside it must sound pretty crazy of her to promise something like that.

Sigh. She addresses both Maurabel and Lightning this time. :All right, I couldn't find the Glass or the Adamant I freed before, I think they did the sensible thing and flew very far away. I think I'd better walk to the edge of the city and try to find an elemental I can free who's willing to pretend to be mine, and then I'll wait until their owner is asleep and see if I can steal the amulet. I want to get one of them intact so I can study it with my mage-sight and figure out how the magic even works:

:I wonder if you can find one who knows me: Maurabel says. :Who used to belong to the university or has talked to one who has. It might help:

:Oh, that makes sense. I can definitely ask! I don't know how many I'll be able to find who are somewhere I can sneak up on their owner when they're asleep, so I might not be able to be picky otherwise, but we'll see. Um, would it be all right if I pack some food? I might be back really late. ...And I don't know if I can get in here easily once you're asleep, I don't want to wake you, maybe if it takes a long time I'll just sleep in a bush again and come back in the morning:

:I'm not an especially light sleeper. I'm keeping Lightning overnight for reasons but you can probably snuggle up with her under there: Maurabel bags some nuts and raisins and bread for Jisa.

:Thank you!: Jisa is curious about 'reasons' but decides not to be nosy. She stuffs the bagged food into her tunic pocket, and forges forth into the city.

Her practical Thoughtsensing range is a mile or two if she's looking for un-Gifted strangers' minds, but she thinks elementals might be easier to find, their minds 'feel' different. So as she troops back toward the road she followed into the city before, she stretches out and out and out, looking for elemental minds outside the city proper.

There's a Wood out in an orchard thataway.

Reachreachreach. :Hi!: Jisa says. :I'm from another world. Any chance you know Maurabel from the university?:

...On reflection that's probably a confusing introduction but oh well.

:??what are you?: replies Wood.

:I'm a mage and a Mindspeaker, but mages from my world aren't like mages here, we have different magic. I can break amulets and I want to free all the elementals, but right now I'm trying to free someone who's willing to pretend to be mine so I can stand out less. Are you interested?:

:It'd be obvious you stole me, wouldn't it?:

:I was thinking I'd do it while your owner's asleep tonight. And I don't need to be visible, I've freed some other elementals and no one knows it was me, but I should still be more careful than that. Um, I guess the problem is that your owner might come to the city and recognize you. I can do magic illusions? I could make you look like someone different:

:- yes, if I looked different I could pretend to be yours:

:All right. Um, and do you know of Maurabel? She's a student at the university, I'm staying with her right now:

:I don't think we've met:

:Hmm. Well, she also wanted to free elementals and she's helping me now. We can trust her. If I get you out and you come back with me, you can ask the elementals at the university about her:

:Okay. My owner lives in the city - I don't know how to tell you where -:

:I'm going to come closer so it's easier to talk to you. Um, I've walked around the city a bunch and I can go explore it more, if you tell me what landmarks your owner lives near?:

:It's by the well and has a lemon tree out front:

:All right, I'll do some exploring and let you know if I need more direction:

She can do that with scrying, to save her feet. Look for a well - or wells - first. How many wells do there seem to be in the city?
