Belrun is so close to getting this damned flu strain to calm down in this one egg. She copies the change across to a few more eggs' worth, iterates, writes everything down, and Fetches the egg that is getting scary into her pot of simmering water before it makes a break for it. It's getting on toward dark and if she keeps working she's going to have to do it by candlelight, and she doesn't like that - it's already too easy to bump into things when she can see them. She calls it a day and closes up the lab for the night and heads out to walk over to the university cafeteria. It's a nice evening, and it's Flatbread Night, and she's in a generally good mood.
:I'd been - I put in my next letter to Leareth that I wanted him to pay your tuition at a school somewhere, studying anything you like:
:Wow. Really–: Pause. :I shouldn't be surprised, that's - not giving you or him enough credit, or something. Anyway. I can't really think about that yet. I just want to go home. But, thank you. Can you please not tell anyone yet? I - I'm worried they won't let me, if they're expecting it:
:They might Truth Spell me but they probably won't get around to it right away and anyway I don't believe I'm currently allowed to talk to people. But where does your mother live, if I get the chance to follow up and send you a letter of recommendation and some cash -:
:If there's anything else I can do to help - uh, and there's a means of communication feasible - let me know?:
:Of course. I...: Long pause. :I don't see how this can turn out all right, and - I really can't make it better by being here, anymore - but, good luck, I mean that:
Notebook notebook. Obscure notebook worthless to third parties who might intercept it.
It's getting quite late in the evening when Savil turns up at her door. "Belrun, can you come with me?" she says jerkily.
"- are you sending me home, should I bring my stuff -" She hasn't outright packed but she did consolidate her belongings enough that she can get that way in five minutes.
"We need to talk and try to get everyone back on the same page now and - maybe - probably - but it wouldn't be tonight, it's already dark out, we're not going to just kick you into the streets."
Savil must be stressed enough to have forgotten about Belrun's tendency to trip, because she sets off walking rather fast, and also the path is not exactly well lit.
Belrun shuffles briskly and catches herself as necessary with Fetching and manages not to hit the ground.
"Oh, is that - Shavri!" Vanyel catches up to them at a run, waving. "Can someone please tell me what's going on?"
"–Are we meeting with everyone? Why's Vanyel here?" Tantras is converging on them from another path.
"Tran, can you please leave that hobbyhorse alone for thirty seconds, we have a situation."
"Dara's vanished on us. I'm - really scared for her - Belrun, do you have any–"
"You haven't even asked her? Belrun, are you responsible for Dara disappearing?"
