Belrun is so close to getting this damned flu strain to calm down in this one egg. She copies the change across to a few more eggs' worth, iterates, writes everything down, and Fetches the egg that is getting scary into her pot of simmering water before it makes a break for it. It's getting on toward dark and if she keeps working she's going to have to do it by candlelight, and she doesn't like that - it's already too easy to bump into things when she can see them. She calls it a day and closes up the lab for the night and heads out to walk over to the university cafeteria. It's a nice evening, and it's Flatbread Night, and she's in a generally good mood.
"I'm so sorry!" Vanyel, still not all the way awake and kind of disoriented, curls up in a ball of misery and humiliation. "Nightmare - was I projecting - happens sometimes, I'm sorry–"
:It's okay, Van just had a nightmare:
:Maybe you should go back to your room?:
"I know - I should've before, I was just tired, I'm really sorry." Vanyel hauls himself to his feet, avoiding looking at her.
WELP seeing Leareth was worth it but she's going to want a nap today. She gets up and stretches out all the kinks in her joints and kisses the top of Amshalan's head there where she's still asleep and goes to her room, blanket around her.
That's fine, she got a frickin' COMPANION yesterday and has a lot to think about. She occupies herself until sent for.
"Did you get much sleep? Van said he had the dream last night and it worked for you again! That must've been really nice, but also kind of distracting, Van's exhausted."
"Uh, I got decent quality of sleep but it was interrupted - twice, dream once and then Vanyel had a nightmare. So I might want a nap later but it's not a disaster."
"Poor Van. He didn't mention that, but he wouldn't. Anyway, I came to see you because Randi wants to meet you in person. Given that you're Chosen, it seems very unlikely you're here to assassinate him."
"The extent to which Amshalan formalizing the fact that she is fond of me has done the exact thing I expected it to is honestly a little disturbing, but okay, if that's enough of a vouch that you'll believe me under a truth spell that I had nothing to do with it should something be ill-timed."
"...I suppose it is. Then again, I think the idea is that you can't realistically hide a murder attempt from your own Companion forever and they will," she winces a bit, "repudiate you if they find out, and most Heralds would - go a long way to avoid that."
"I'm not in fact going to assassinate the King. How he comes to that conclusion is, I suppose, his own business. I just want to be really sure that there's not an opening for a frame job."
"If anything were to happen and you denied it under Truth Spell we would believe you. Also I'll be with him and we'll be at opposite ends of a big meeting room."
"No, he's in the middle of something right now and he'll want some time to decompress in between. How about right after lunch?"
"I mean, we could arrange something, but I figured you could maybe use a breather and some time with your Companion."
"I'll take it if it's on offer, yes, just checking. Though I'm not sure she's awake yet."
