Reincarnated Fernando is dropped in Azeroth
Permalink

The past five years have been the best in Fernando's life (aside from nearly dying three or four times).  He made second circle in under a year of adventuring, and as of six months ago he hit third.  Wizard culture has shifted in the past decade and a half (he would like to credit Cheliax's spell lord, but maybe it's just that Cheliax used to be terrible?) and it is much easier to purchase useful, unique, and/or exotic spells.  He has found a group he likes adventuring with, he would even almost call them friends.  He's even gotten used to being a halfling.

His current job is a fun one, he purchased and learned Arcane Sight just for it.  His team is cataloging the magical traps in the ruins of some old wizard's layer.  He's got arcane sight up, so any magical traps should be obvious.  The team's rogue (another halfling) is should be able to spot any nonmagical traps, and the bard (the third halfling on the team) alternates between detect magic and poking things with mage hand.

He has half a warning when he sees what he thought was decorations on the floor light up beneath him to his arcane sight and he is wrenched elsewhere...

He takes an impact like being shunted from a failed dimension door.  He casts his healing (he always keeps at least one healing prepared) the moment he comes to his senses and quickly takes stock of his surroundings.  His arcane sight is still up, so he should be able to spot any notable magic easily.

The place he’s in is extremely magic! If he’s ever been near the Worldwound, the corrupted landscape there is probably a decent point of comparison. There’s a sort of background magic, maybe conjuration? Some sort of odd subtype?

To mundane sight, it’s a… forest. Not a healthy one, judging by the slightly withered plants, weird green mist, and virulent green river. Everything looks… off.

The woman standing in front of him is also magic! Specifically, her entire being has a Strong Necromantic aura.

Every item she owns is enchanted, too, nearly all of it abjuration.

Not her weapon, though. Her axe’s aura is also necromantic. Said weapon is also quite close to him, all things considered, considering she’s holding it ready to attack.

If he’s paying close attention, he might notice that she is completely and utterly still. No unconscious motions, no blinking, no breathing.

He hasn’t personally been to the Worldwound but he’s heard first hand accounts of it, and he’s heard and read other accounts of locations warped by magic… Tanglebriar, Whisperwoods… Avistan has a lot of locations warped by magic.  He gets the general concept but isn’t sure what to make of it.

He notices the stillness rather quickly, so it is some type of undead probably?

Literally the only proper combat spell he has prepared today is Summon Monster II, but he still has his bonded object unused and he could cast a Summon Monster III if it looks decisive.

…Undead vary in how hostile they are.  Actually, it could be a construct?  Or some unusual species?  Or maybe she (it is a she?) has a necklace of adaption?  (Does that mean he should use his bonded object on an air bubble.  He should cast a detect poison and take a look around?). Or… there actually kind of a lot of possibilities…

He’ll try the simple approach first.

“Hello?  I seem to have had a teleport accident?”  He says in Taldane.

He repeats variations of “Hello, teleport accident” in a few other languages.

She nods carefully, smiles slightly, backs up a few steps, and grabs a green potion out of her pack. She drinks it.

”This should work for about an hour. Greetings, human.”

An hour… so she’s probably using a potion of tongues?  And she’s some combination of friendly and rich enough to spend a potion on communicating.

And she thinks he’s a human child.  People have made that mistake even in places where halflings are common, he’s got a young looking face.

“Uh… um hello!”

Halflings probably seem less vulnerable than human children…

”I’m actually a halfling with a youthful face!  I have my own translation spell I can cast on myself that lasts 8 hours once that yours runs out.  It’s a new innovation that’s been spreading around Cheliax and the rest of the inner sea.”

It’ll mean using his bonded object spell, but it’s probably worth it?

“A… halfing. Oh, I see, I’m very sorry, I should really know better. I’m afraid I don’t recognize Cheliax, is it on the Eastern Kingdoms? You’re a bit far from home, if so, but a portal to Stormwind should probably be achievable.”

“I’m not familiar with the Eastern Kingdoms or Stormwind… uh… what continent or island are we on?  I’m from Absalom, that’s where the Starstone is?  The continent  of Avistan is to the north, Garund to the south, Casmaron to the east.”

He’s pretty sure Tian Xia people will have heard of the Starstone?  He’s less sure about Sarusan?

He takes a closer look at her magic items while there is still duration left on his arcane sight.  His spellcraft is nowhere near good enough to guess functions from first principles, but if they have specific spells he knows or are standard items he might have a shot at identification and he should at least be able to pick up the overall strength of their aura.

Literally none of these items are standard, at least not on Golarion. They’re all fairly powerful, the sort of thing a high level but non-archmage adventurer might have.

”…I hope we simply have different names for the continents, because I’ve never heard of any of those. We’re on Kalimdor. Eastern Kingdoms are to the, well, east. Northrend’s northeast. Pandaria and Zandalar are southeast. The Azuremist Isles are northwest, that’s where the Exodar is.”

“Tongues should handle continent names reasonably well?  Well… a name like ‘Eastern Kingdoms’ it would communicate literally, but all the proper nouns should map across languages if it has a word at all in both languages.”

He resist the urge to go on a side tangent about mapping functions and how to conceptualize translation spells in that way.

“I assumed your potion was a potion of tongues, maybe if the potion was of some nonstandard variant of the spell it would mess up?”

He’s starting to wonder if this is a scam.  An adventurer as (presumably) powerful and rich as her shouldn’t need to scam people, and it would have to be a spontaneously planned and executed scam.  But a Norgorberite might not care about need and would take the spontaneity as a fun challenge.

The alternative, that he is on another planet, seems pretty absurd… but not outright impossible.  And the fact that none of her magic items are standard is evidence in that direction.

“I’m neither a mage nor alchemist, I’m afraid, I just bought the potion.”

She examines him again. She doesn’t normally mistake gnomes for human children, they don’t look particularly similar. If he’s from a different planet or plane…

”Do you know a name for the planet you’re from? We are currently on Azeroth. And… I apologize, are you a gnome?”

“My planet is called Golarion.  Uh… I can list off its most distinctive features if you happen to know about other planets.  The most I can recall about other planets is Elves originally came from another planet.”

“The word you’re using for ‘Gnomes’ refers to a distinct species from Halflings.  Gnomes are allegedly descended from Fey that came to the material plane.  They have a bit of innate magic, don’t age like other mortals, and, from the perspective of other mortal races are prone to obsessiveness and inventiveness.  From their own perspective other races are boring and they know how to actually pursue what they enjoy doing.”

Fernando’s actually pretty sympathetic to the Gnomes perspective on that last point.

“Halflings… we’re mostly like humans, just shorter and better senses.”

He’ll elide his whole reincarnation thing for the time being.

She nods.

“I am fairly certain elves are native here. At the very least, they’ve been here for over ten millennia.”

She’s not going to quibble about Gnomes, it’s not like she’s made a study of their aging. She thinks they’re mortal, but maybe he’s just talking about mechagnomes or something. …He mentioned humans, and he did mention elves. Light, this is probably another alternate Draenor, isn’t it. Well, whatever, that doesn’t actually matter much here.

“I… don’t know of any interplanetary portals except for the Dark Portal, and that only goes to Outland. I don’t suppose you happen to be a portal-specialized archmage?”

“I am not an archmage.  I have specialized in Conjuration!  But, at my current level of power, the only teleportation I can cast is more of novelty proving it can be done at a lower circle than anything practical.”

He doesn’t actually believe the other planet story yet, but he’ll play along with it.

“My interest in Conjuration does mean I’ve kept up with the relevant theory and speculation… outright interplanetary teleportation is archmage territory if at all possible. The elves on Golarion allegedly have a now broken portal artifact.  Oh, and Plane Shift and Gate are, as typically not used, probably not actually sufficient to get to another planet.  Planar adjacency and the limits of the spells means you would have to travel deeper into and across an outer plane and back to use them to travel that far.”

“Another plane or timeline might be more likely, if you have consistent ways of accessing them. I’ve only heard of such being done through powerful artifacts or rituals, but we do know they exist.”

She glances behind herself, sees some sort of ten-foot tall green-glowing stone elemental maybe fifty feet from her, and pulls it towards herself with some kind of telekinetic spell. Necromantic, if he’s paying attention to that. Then she lops its head off with her axe.

He has just a little duration left on his arcane sight, so he can see the spell is necromantic.  It’s a bit odd seeing a necromantic telekinetic effect.  You can achieve many telekinetic effects through transmutation, some through evocation applying force, and a few quasi-telekinetic effects with conjurations.  A necromantically based telekinesis is unusual.

The two obvious explanations are that the green-glowing stone elemental thing is actually undead and the thus a necromantic spell could achieve a telekinetic effect against it.  The other is that the woman is herself some type of undead as he first expected when he noticed her unnatural stillness.

He glances around to try to spot any other imminent threats.

“Are we safe here?  And if you don’t mind me asking… what species are you?”

She asked him, so hopefully a reciprocal question isn’t too invasive.  And it might gently lead into the topic of her unlife (or provide an opportunity for an innocuous explanation).

No other glowing creatures are visible, but the trees mean the sightlines aren’t fantastic.

“…I’m not particularly threatened by the demons here, but the area in general is quite unsafe. The Cenarian Circle has an outpost nearby, maybe a few miles from here, and they’ve purified the land around it.”

”I am a Draenei.*”

*The Exiled Ones

She pauses for a long moment before speaking.

”I am also undead. I am not a member of the Scourge, and am no longer under the control of the Lich King. The Knights of the Ebon Blade, of which I am a member, were endorsed by the paladin Tirion Fordring. If you wish to avoid me, I would recommend waiting until we get to the outpost, because this area is, as I mentioned, full of demons.”

She’s back to complete stillness, and her face is completely blank.

His face goes into a carefully neutral expression as he hears her explanation.

He has no clue what a Draenei is.  As to the other part… she is a lot more… coherent than most undead are supposed to be.  But appearances can be deceiving.  All the undead Fernando has ever heard of end up warped somehow.  In the ideal case she has a relatively harmless obsession, in which case he should be prepared to entertain whatever it is, whether it’s badgers or tediously detailed monologues or whatever.  If her warping runs more Evil… well dying trying to do Good should be worth extra Good, hopefully she doesn’t have any reanimation or malediction or soul trapping magic?

“I would appreciate an escort to the nearest outpost, that thing you slayed looks beyond me even when I’m prepared specifically for combat.”

He processes the rest of her statement.

“You have an endorsement from a Paladin?  Like a Lawful Good, lays on hands, detects evil, smites evil Paladin?”

“Laying on Hands yes. Smiting… I’d normally consider that a priest spell, but paladins have abilities that are basically identical. I… like to think that paladins are generally good and law-abiding, but I’ve also interacted with Scarlet Crusaders. I have no idea what you mean by detecting evil.”

He can’t even quite keep the skepticism off his face.

“I think Detecting Evil and Smiting Evil are the first and most fundamental abilities granted to the specific sort of divinely empowered people that the word ‘Paladin’ refers to on my planet.  Evil like alignment Evil.  Do the Gods not grant any alignment detection on this, uh, planet?”

And if this planets ‘Paladins’ aren’t universally Lawful and Good, the endorsement of one is less helpful.  Assuming this isn’t an elaborate deception in the first place.  If the outpost she mentioned has living people he can at least make one of the obvious checks.

“I’ve never heard of alignment detection, no. The first thing a paladin generally learns is to infuse the holy light into their weapon. The outpost is this way, follow me.”

She’s an impatient walker, and doesn’t get tired. She’ll slow down for him, but she’ll easily keep pace with whatever his apparent fastest speed is.

He’ll follow along.  His endurance is a bit below average but can keep up a good pace for a few miles, even if he’ll be winded by the end of it.  He doesn’t have much breath for talking walking this fast.

He thinks about what he’ll do at the outpost.  Figure out if this is real and then… he isn’t sure.  It’s starting to dawn on him that he might not ever see his team again.  He’s surprised how upsetting that is.

Nothing bothers them on the way, but she does take a detour around a suspicious looking tree of some kind.

The outpost has several buildings, one of which is built into a giant tree. The land looks notably healthier as they get closer, and the background corruption fades away. The pool in the center is absolutely magic, though. Divine healing energies, with some kind of purification effect.

An elf, although perhaps not one recognizable to Fernando, gives Halraan a cordial nod as she arrives. “Have you finished,” she trails off, “who is this?”

There’s a moment where Halraan would definitely be blushing if she was still alive. “I never actually got his name. He had a portal accident of some kind, ended up in the Felwood of all places.”
