"If you can do this I'd probably suggest doing it on people once you discover it works on animals."

"Yeah I was thinking of it for population bottlenecks but also I would really like to cure Huntington's." 

"That's a good choice! I have other methods at my disposal so I've been throwing money at malaria but Huntington's is a bitch."

Hmm what does she know about malaria. "...Mosquito nets?"

"That's the state of the art, yeah."

"I should look into how they eradicated smallpox. I think even polio isn't quite dead yet. That seems important to fix."

"Aggressive vaccination campaign! Polio is dwindling but not gone."

"It would be really cool to get a magical girl with a theme about eradicating diseases. I should try recruiting from like the WHO or something."

"How do themes... work, that that would be how you'd do it."

"Uh--I have an intuition for it but the intuition is kind of fuzzy and I expect my actual understanding of the process to improve once I figure out how to make people magical girls and have done it a few times. But--your theme and your virtue are both going to be, like, based on who you are as a person, to an extent, and people who are actively attempting to eradicate diseases seem likely to be strongly selected for being eradicating-diseases kinds of people? I'm not certain I'd get someone with the kind of powerset I'm looking for by that method, but it seems like the obvious thing to try." 

"Huh. Any guess how it interacts with people who are espers?"

"Not a clue! None of my mysterious intuition or handy dandy brain manual has anything whatever to say about espers."

"Because there are probably things that are the case about me as a person that would lead to powers that might dovetail really inefficiently with my esper powers... is it steerable?"

"It, hm. mmmmaybe. I think...that might depend on the developmental path I take towards being able to do that? But it's also possible there will be tradeoffs and steering ability will come at the cost of something else."

"You have a developmental path involved?"

"It's like...hm. Becoming able to do a thing involves growing, and there are multiple ways you can grow to get the same result? It's not, like, a skill tree with multiple paths to a skill, it's much more free-form and organic than that. Alternately I could figure out how to do something using the abilities I already have, like by developing a ritual, and if I do that then details are going to depend on the exact details of a ritual."

"Wow, just many magic systems in a trenchcoat are you over there?"

"Man, that's like asking how many species of citrus there are. It's complicated and they don't have bright line boundaries."

"Huh. Were all of you magic or is it at least going to be a smaller vague number than the number of yous there were?"

"--Oh, there's lots of mes who had magic that I just don't."

"Oh, that'd really bug me if it were me. But were you all magic to begin with?"

"Um...maybe. I'm not sure. I haven't specifically identified any who weren't but I don't have a specific intuition that I won't?"

"Do you think it's a special you-property that you are or were so numerous or - no, your family is also numerous? Who are they? I took pictures of them, should I delete them?"

"I don't think so? But I might not be thinking of all the reasons why someone might want that. Uh, I don't know if--so, like, I'm pretty sure the magic thing was specifically hitting mes--so, like, I know there are a bunch of mes in absolute terms, but the number of worlds that got hit could be absolutely tiny compared to the worlds that exist? I don't actually know how universes work."
