"Our early peal was surprised that Bells came in boy, they didn't get to Cam - well, he's switching to Cooper now - till there were already nine of them. I hear your peal did not have that problem."

"Cam and Iobel were the first two to meet. We didn't even notice a marked tendency towards girls for a while."

"It's pretty marked. We also only ever have daughters so far for some reason - except Epic, but he's not operating by standard rules there."

"That he is not. Mitros and Iobel wanted to have an Elspeth-template, will that be possible?"

"I don't know. The Elspeths - they're going by Rhyme and Reason, your peal's is Rhyme - are too similar for me to get a picture of what a non-Aurum Elspeth might be like or what you have to do to get one. I am pretty sure that other people who might otherwise have a Carinna will be able to skip her by wishing; she has suggested that she should be skipped."

"I'm sure this is in the reading I haven't gotten to, but - Carinna?"

"My eldest. She's - I have a very nice world. She's all right. But she's extremely sensitive and has a lot of depressive tendencies that she has to work very hard to keep in check and if she were in a world that were not so nice she doesn't think she'd cope well. And she thinks it's probably worth skipping her if matching pairs want kids; her sisters are more resilient."

Nod. "And you can't see what sort of template-kid will result from a couple having children, except by one set somewhere trying it?"

"Yeah, no such luck."

"Thank you anyway."

"You're welcome."

He can't quite tell all the girl Bells apart by mannerism just yet and it's disconcerting. He watches as much as one courteously can and expects he'll have it by the end of the evening. Cooper is very obviously not Kib or Cam, though.

For one thing he goes around with a hawk on his shoulder, does not apart from that have wings, and doesn't dress like Kib!

The hawk is looking right back at the Maitimo.

"Hello!" he says to the hawk. "Your name wasn't in the very brief briefing I got to read before I came here."

"That's Grace but she doesn't talk to people who aren't me," Cooper says. "The briefing did say don't touch people's soul birds, right?"

"Yes, it was appropriately emphatic. It also mentioned you can find out what your soul bird is going to be with your ridiculously powerful magic but I haven't had the chance yet."

"You're not guaranteed a bird in particular." He produces a square. "Wanna find out?"

"Love to, do I wish to find out, or for a model of it, or -"

"Illusion of it, generally. You want to wish it yourself?"

"Am I likely to instead open a wormhole - we've got a team of scientists trying to figure out what those are and if anyone other than Nexus has 'em - and temporarily kill us all by wording the wish wrong?"

"Is that a problem a lot of your peal's magic has? A square couldn't do that even if you were trying. It's also not by wording, it's by intent."

"Gem shepherds her wishing-device - which also works by intent, but can still have some fairly unexpected results - to make sure no one does that, summoning's the only form of magic native to my world and it totally can do that, though it usually doesn't." He holds out his hand for the square.

Cooper hands it over.

His soul animal is a fairly adorable fruit bat. He smiles at him but has no burning urge to go to Alethia and bring him into existence. "Thank you! So I hear your world has an evil god?"

"Yeah, it's a problem. And the less evil gods suck too, I hear this is is a familiar story. Inconveniently they don't have a clearly defined power level nor do I know what would happen if they died."
