"...so the janitorial position is just room, no board?"

I'm afraid so. I'm not at liberty to set the wage.

"It's fine. - what, um, are you?"

I'm the bar.

"...were you, like, created at some point?"

Perhaps, but I'm afraid my memory doesn't stretch back that far.

"I guess it doesn't for most people. Do you have, like... any very cheap breakfast options?"

I can get you a bagel with cream cheese of whatever flavor you like for 53¢.

"That sounds OK. Strawberry cream cheese, please."

She leaves exactly 53¢ on the table.

Her bagel appears with an apparently complimentary glass of ice water.

"It's very good," she says, after taking a bite. When she's done, she sips what's left of her milkshake.

This is a nice place. She can't camp out here forever, and she feels like she's gonna be pretty bored for the ten hours it takes Tyelcormo to sleep if time doesn't do anything weird, but it's a nice place.

It doesn't take him ten hours to sleep; it takes four. (Two pass in the main bar.) His clothes aren't dry when he's done but he declares them close enough and, after some consideration, leaves his hair down, pinned back just so it won't get in his face. 

Anyone come by downstairs?

Nope.

Too bad. He descends the stairs.

He smiles again when he sees her.

This level of happiness about her general existence weird but also kind of endearing but also kind of making her nervous about how much cooler the other Karen probably was.

"So, uh, plans for today?"

"You wanna tell me what you know about the debt collecting vampires? At least until my security shift starts?"

"Oh, um. They're vampires? They work for this guy named Adam Lin? I've, uh, only run into them once and I don't really know how many warnings you traditionally get but I'm guessing not many?"

"How'd you know they were vampires?"

"Fangy faces. There's - kind of a lot of weird stuff in LA. I'm not really an expert, or anything, at all, it's just - around."

"You know vampires can't get into your house, right? Unless someone invites them in."

"I, uh, kinda have to leave my house on a regular basis."

“I figured. They also can’t do daylight.”

"Plan A is in fact to hide in my apartment whenever it's about to get dark and, uh, hope I get enough money to pay people off before something less specifically vulnerable to daylight comes by and kills me."

"See, that's very sensible. If everyone was that sensible I'd have way less to do."
