I have convinced this swordsman to go for a walk and would like this resolved by the time he's back. It's fine if you kill her.

Well they can at least try to not do that.

Cool, cool.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" demands Karen.

Mummy girl stands up to defend herself, looks from Karen to Alex to Karen again, and - starts crying.

     " - I just want to live."

"So did the people you murdered!"

"I was murdered! They - they told me that I was the only person who could be offered. A chosen one. I was given no choice in this, no chance to live, to love, to - find out who I even am - "

"That doesn't make it OK! - Look, I'm sorry that your life has sucked, OK, I really am. It sucks that you were murdered, and it sucks that you had to lie awake in that exhibit for years and years, and it sucks that there's a guy out there trying to kill you, and it sucks that if you don't kill people you'll go back to being a mummy, but you don't get to kill people over it, any more than people should have killed you however many centuries ago. Sometimes life sucks, that's not a reason to make it suck more for everyone else."

Mummy girl lowers herself back against the wall again, still crying. "I can't go back. I can't."

Karen sighs. She crouches down so that she's on mummy girl's level again, still far enough away that she can punch her if mummy girl tries to kiss her. "I know. But you can't keep doing this either, right, if you have to feed every day you're gonna run out of people. Can't have any more ice cream then. Let us help you find something better?"

"...you'll help?" asks mummy girl, a little tremulously. "You will?"

"If I can. S'what I do. But if you hurt my friend again I'm gonna be mad."

"And so will a buncha people who aren't as nice as her," he says, blinking and sitting up. "Look, there's a bunch of stuff we can try, okay? I'm not human, so if that - worked, whatever it was - then it doesn't hafta be humans, we can maybe get somewhere with that. There might be magic."

"OK," says the mummy girl, hugging herself. " - I'm sorry."

"Are you?" He stands up. "Safe room's across the hall."

Karen gives her a hand getting up, then doesn't let go when she's standing. They walk across the hall.

This room doesn't have windows, and does have a camera above the bed.

"What exactly happens when you don't eat people?"

"...I start turning back. Skin turns - dead, and horrible, and - if I don't do it for long enough I think it'll happen to all of me."

" - okay. Did - whatever you did to me - help?"

"I don't know. Maybe a little. Not much. - I wasn't trying to kill you, I really wasn't, I just - thought if I could do it a little then maybe I could get away before it was too late."

"So you could kill someone else."

Mummy girl looks down and doesn't answer.

"We'll look into stuff that might work for you. Well, other people will, I have a headache." He gestures to Karen that they should leave the room.

Karen waves at the mummy girl and follows him out.

"You OK?"

He closes the door. "Think so. I - I don't know what that did. - we need more magic on our side. You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm good."

"Hey, Wishbone, we're on a deadline. Do you know anything that might stop her from decaying?"

Oh, hm.

- this isn't really a solution, but if you just want more time, the burial ritual preserved her for hundreds of years. If all of this only started when the seal broke, then it's possible that repairing or replacing the seal might return things to the status quo. Not that the status quo was great, but it might be more reversible than other options.

Allowing her to keep living as a human will be tricky. If human immortality were costless, then everyone would do it. But I'll see if I can find something. I'd make much faster progress with access to Michael's library, if, say, anyone wanted to ever pick me up.

Stretched a bit thin over here, but we'll try.

"Do we have the pieces of the seal?"

"Not on me. I can see if they're still at the museum."

"I guess maybe we break into the museum after all."

"I am going to rack up so many stories about totally justifiable juvenile delinquency. I'm up for it, though if you're not then I should probably have someone else with me."

"Michael doesn't like to commit crimes. I'm up for it."
