Macalania Wood is known as one of the most beautiful, most serene places in Spira. Crystals glimmer on every branch, pools of water like lustrous gems collect under huge, blue trees.
Yuna couldn’t admire its beauty. She was barely affected by the gentle wind, the soft music of the water. Her heart was broken, the remnants barely enough to keep her going.
She put one foot in front of the other, following her guardians, tears gently dripping down her face.
"Your man will be returned to you, just return my son to me," Yunalesca says, syrupy sweet.
"No! No, you can't trust her, Yu-"
Tidus breaks off, scrabbling at his throat for air.
"And people called me a trickster," Masquerade snarls. "You lie and lie and don't care who you hurt."
"Now, now, the summoner has to make the choice herself. Those are the rules," she says, tutting at Tidus.
But she refuses to give up who she is. No matter what.
"Tidus would never accept that trade. And either will I. Aten is a part of me, we are a part of each other. You'll never have him!"
Aten's startled (no-one ever chose him). (Except- And there's that elusive half-memory again. Except someone.)
Masquerade is, honestly, impressed. Yuna might just be the one who changes this moving forward.
Yuna runs, trying to reach him, hold him one last time. His arms are open wide and then-
She falls, hitting the ground hard.
Tidus is gone, again.
If Yunalesca is looking to hasten her demise, her casual cruelty is certainly helping her cause.
Yuna takes Anri’s hand, shaking a little. There are tears on her cheeks but steel in her eyes.
Auron seems smaller somehow, for just a moment, grief for the boy he watched over, for the son of his friend, nearly overwhelming.
He takes a battle ready stance, shaking off memories, and unsheathes his sword.
“You mean to fight me, fiend? You’ll find me no easy target,” Yunalesca says, warningly.
Masquerade, in turn, seems bigger. They laugh, a cackling court jester. "And you will find us no easy foe. There is hatred and betrayal and anger here."
Yuna wipes away tears, and unsheathes her staff. “This is my story. I’m going to end it the way I want!”
“Then so be it.”
Yunalesca flies into the air, her hair turning into a mass of writhing dark energy. She lets fly spells, her face contorted with fury.
Aten flares up. He will not let her hurt these people, who've been so kind to him.
Lulu sends back spells of her own, furious that Yunalesca tried to use Tidus against Yuna.
