the dream of those left behind
Yuna and company scoop a Nova
Permalink Mark Unread

Macalania Wood is known as one of the most beautiful, most serene places in Spira. Crystals glimmer on every branch, pools of water like lustrous gems collect under huge, blue trees.

Yuna couldn’t admire its beauty. She was barely affected by the gentle wind, the soft music of the water. Her heart was broken, the remnants barely enough to keep her going.

She put one foot in front of the other, following her guardians, tears gently dripping down her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I felt it near here. I think the fayth is in the base of the tree.” Auron pointed out a large tree, with a stream arcing across one side of it.

Auron was not unsympathetic to Yuna’s pain. He lost friends to the constant cycle of death that is Spira. He himself died in it. But he could not let his story end without safeguarding his closest friend’s daughter.

And that meant getting to Yunalesca, and ending this once and for all.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is, perhaps, something watching them? Well hidden, but definitely there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron senses it, the thrum of power. He’s not sure what it is, but it’s definitely paying attention to them.

He guides Yuna to the fayth, but keeps half his mind on the source of power.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fayth is small, a boy trapped beneath glass. Yuna feels a thud of pain, of guilt. Without his sacrifice, she could not destroy Sin, and yet he was so young.

Tidus was young too, though not as young as the fayth. She still makes the connection, and her tears are harder to ignore.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu wraps an arm around Yuna’s shoulders, squeezing softly. “Take your time,” she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment, Yuna leans into Lulu’s touch, and then steadies herself. She kneels by the fayth, closes her eyes, and focuses on that tendril of connection.

“Yevon, spirit within, hear my prayer,” she whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Whatever's watching is closer now, on edge. The woods themselves seem almost panicked.

Permalink Mark Unread

“We’ve got its attention.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“How can you tell?” Yuna says, and looks where Auron is.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Concentrate.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna returns to praying, but the hair on the back of her neck stands up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Flames light over the surface of the stream.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna gasps, and flinches away from the stream, but doesn’t stop praying, hanging onto that little bit of connection.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu prepares a water spell, not sure how much good it will do, since the water was on fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari growls, and readies his spear.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Something is here. Something that doesn’t want Yuna getting the aeon.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“And what gave you that impression?” Lulu says drily, though inside she’s worried.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Did the fayth's eyes just open?

"You won't have me!"

There's far more fear and panic to the words than any certainty at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fire isn't attacking them. Not really. It's just-

Trying to get them to leave? To drive them away from the tree and the fayth it contains?

Permalink Mark Unread

The fayth...is awake?

Yuna gasps and falls back, her heart in her throat. “The fayth is awake!”

Permalink Mark Unread

“How?” Auron frowns staring at the raging, yet contained fire, one hand on his sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I don’t know. I didn’t know it was possible!” Yuna leans forward, pressing one hand onto the glass. The fayth’s eyes were open, and she did hear it speak- does he seem scared?

“I promise I’m not going to hurt you. I need your strength to defeat Sin.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'll just useuseuse, and hurthurthurt."

And it's panic, and resignation, and a sense that that's what everyone does.

Permalink Mark Unread

The flames surge upwards, twisting together anxiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

“No! I would never! My aeons are precious to me. I would never cause any of them harm!”

She can feel every single one of them, pressed to her heart. She loves them, they are her friends. Through her connection to the fayth, she sends that feeling, the love and comradery and friendship.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Complete confusion. He doesn't understand those feelings, has never experienced them.

Has only ever known hurt and fear and ownership, and pain.

Permalink Mark Unread

No, not ownership. Yuna doesn’t own her aeons, and wouldn’t own-

Aten? Is that your name?

Permalink Mark Unread

The flames flicker, as though-

-A long forgotten memory, a sense of familiarity-

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes? Yes."

(And there's that resignation again, because now she knows, and he can't-)

Permalink Mark Unread

“Aten, I want you to join us. As an equal. You would be our friend, who would fight beside us against Sin and sorrow.”

Yuna leans a little closer, watching Aten through the glass. She presses her other hand to her heart. “We will not be like those others, we will take care of you. I swear it.”

Permalink Mark Unread

-He doesn't know how to trust that. (There's a flicker, there's something here, a memory he can't quite reach for any more-)

He's tired. And so tired of being alone.

"Don't make me-" (It's unclear, what the end of that sentence is, there's too many jumbled emotions.)

Permalink Mark Unread

“I would never,” Yuna promises.

She opens her heart, ready for a part of him to slip inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's scared, so scared. And that panic is still there, he doesn't trust her - doesn't know how to-

Permalink Mark Unread

The fire on the stream flickers. It doesn't die, doesn't exactly calm, but there's less heat, it's less frantic, less defensive.

Permalink Mark Unread

“It’s okay. We’ll help you,” Yuna coaxes softly.

A feeling like an outstretched hand flows from her heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

-And it's like he's taking it, still hesitant, still slow, a raging inferno, and yet a hearthfire on a cold night-

(The fayth's eyes close.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna gasps at the warmth. It’s like wildfire in her heart.

“Thank you, Aten.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Are you all right, Yuna?”

Permalink Mark Unread

“I-” The fire is so strong, the power so intense that Yuna can’t- she can’t...

She faints.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron catches her, and gently lays her to the ground. He takes his coat off, and bundles it below her head.

He sees the fayth’s closed eyes. “She will keep you safe,” he tells it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu sits next to Yuna, and gently strokes her hair. Her face is pinched with anger and worry.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Over the stream, the fire is shifting and morphing and-

And there's an almost-human figure made out of the flames, it (he?) takes a hesitant step towards the group (towards Yuna, and her warmth.)

Permalink Mark Unread

“An elemental!” Lulu cries and stands, water spells bubbling over her hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Wait.” Auron grabs Lulu’s arm, holding her back. “That’s not an elemental.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Different. Not a fiend,” Kimhari rumbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

“What...are you?” Lulu asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches away immediately at Lulu's cry, and doesn't try to move any closer.

There's silence in response to her question, as he-

Remembers how to talk in this form. (It's been so long.)

"I- I'm-" Winces, draws in on himself. "I- Aten? I- Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

“You’re the aeon? But Yuna didn’t summon you!”

Permalink Mark Unread

“How are you doing this? Are you drawing power from Yuna?”

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches again, shakes his head rapidly. "I- No, no! I wouldn't- Please- I just- I am? I can- this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron comes closer, inspecting the aeon. He lets a part of himself seperate from his body, whirling away in the form of a pyrefly. He hopes that would soothe the aeon a little.

“How long have you been able to summon yourself?”

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten doesn't quite cower away from Auron, but it's a close thing. He watches the pyrefly in confusion, but his eyes snap back to Auron when he speaks.

"I- I'm sorry, sir, I- It's been- It's hard to keep track. I don't- know. I'm sorry, sir." Beat, and then, much quieter: "Please."

Permalink Mark Unread

“You don’t need to apologise for not knowing something. I cannot imagine you know much of the world outside Macalania.”

Auron inspects the aeon. “You have control over fire?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- mostly, yes. I- sometimes I- can't. But- but normally."

Permalink Mark Unread

“We’ll work with both you and Yuna to help you control that. Ifrit, another aeon, has volcanic powers, and can teach you. For now, we need rest, Yuna especially.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes. Yes. Thank you yes-"

Pauses, does whatever his equivalent of breathing is.

"It's-quiet here. You're the first to come here in-" (too long) "-You'll be safe to rest, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Thank you, Aten.”

He turns and goes to sit by Aten’s fayth, leaning against the tree. He closes his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You will wake us if anyone comes past?” Lulu’s eyes are narrowed at the aeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods rapidly. "Yes, ma'am!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu's eyebrow raises, but she says nothing. She eases herself down next to Yuna and closes her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari sits near the stream, and closes his eyes, though he seems to be meditating rather than sleeping.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten stays over the stream, although his avatar coalesces into a ball, and there's a sense that he's watching further than just this clearing while they sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna wakes first, blearily blinking as she struggles upright. At first glance, she can't feel where Aten is, but can sense his fire inside herself. She follows that trail to the floating ball, and gasps.

"Aten? I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to summon you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He'd been gravitating towards her, but jumps back when she gasps.

"I- you- didn't, ma'am. I- I can. Summon. Myself, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Summon...yourself?" Yuna stares a little closer at Aten. He's definitely an aeon, she can feel the pulse of his energy. But she has never heard of an aeon that can summon itself into being, that is truly strange. And a little exciting, if she's honest with herself.

"That's truly a wonder. Do you prefer to be summoned?"

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a distinct impression of a shrug. "I- not being- hurts less. But- But things get. Hazy. Hard to concentrate sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't remember who you were before?"

That sounds terribly sad to Yuna, especially because the fayth wer- are, such noble people.

Permalink Mark Unread

He forms his body again, it's so much easier to communicate when he can use non-verbal signs, and shakes his head. "I remember- bits. But not- not enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm so sorry. That's a terrible thing. But you were so brave to become a fayth. And your aeon, I can sense it's power. You're incredible, Aten," Yuna says softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head again, lost at the praise. (And there's that flicker of a half-forgotten memory.)

"I just-" Shrugs. "I wasn't- good enough-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You seem plenty good enough to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs again, shrinks in on himself a little, seems to look her over. "I- didn't- hurt you? Did I?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No! No, of course not. It's just...accepting the aeon, it's still hard. Some summoners train longer so that the pilgrimage isn't as hard. But I wanted to go. I'm just not very strong yet. I'm getting better!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He's still, seeming confused-

"I- no, ma'am- you're- you're stronger than- Stronger than the other summoners, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna giggles. "Thank you, Aten." She's blushing. She's very proud of her skills and her aeons, and it's so lovely that Aten seems to see that.

"I don't think I'm as strong as High Summoner yet, but I hope to be. I want to defeat Sin. I need to. Spira needs another Calm."

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs a little - he doesn't actually understand all that much about what is going on in Spira as a whole, or know all that much about any other summoners.

Permalink Mark Unread

“It’s all right. We’ll learn together,” Yuna says, hand over her heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods slowly. "I- as you say, ma'am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna seems a little taken-aback by the formal address. “The aeons don’t usually call me ma’am. You don’t have to either, Aten.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Confusion.

"I- then- what? Um. Should I call you? Ma-"

Permalink Mark Unread

“My name is Yuna. I’m from the Isle of Besaid,” she says, smiling at him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods slowly. "I- okay. I-I'll. Try. Ma- Yu-Yuna." (It sounds physically painful for him to say her name.)

Permalink Mark Unread

“Oh, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. I just- people call me ma’am or my lady, but the people I care about just call me Yuna. I’ve never much liked the formality of other titles.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers a little - shyly? - and gives another nod.

"I- just. Don't- I was always-" he gestures a little vaguely.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You weren’t treated like a friend,” Yuna says, and nods. “The summoners you had previously, they must’ve been terrible people. You’re supposed to form a close bond with your aeons. That’s how they become more powerful. They’re- you’re not servants or slaves. Friends.”

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a sense that that is a completely new concept to Aten.

"I- I don't know how to- I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

“It’s okay. It’s not really something I can instruct, it’s more like...building trust. I want to prove myself to you, to prove that I won’t just use you to build my own power. I want us to fight well.”

She ducks her head, blushing a little. “I hope we’ll be good friends.”

Permalink Mark Unread

-Yup, that flicker is definitely shyness. "I- I think I hope that to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna can't help the grin, but she keeps her head down, blushing bright red.

Permalink Mark Unread

The others wake not long after, and the group readies to leave.

Auron keeps his eye on Aten, curious about the aeon that acts so much like a young boy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu regards him with actual suspicion, watching over Yuna, as if waiting for her to faint any second.

Permalink Mark Unread

He withdraws in on himself as everyone wakes, trying very hard not to look like a threat. Not the easiest task when you're made entirely of fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu will keep a careful eye on him, one arm wrapped around Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Next stop, the Calm Lands. Keep close, Aten."

Auron leads the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

He slides out of his human form into a ball of fire, and follows. He stays close, although still somewhat separate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles at the little ball of flames very fondly.

Permalink Mark Unread

The sun is going down once they leave the woods proper, and with none of Rin's establishments in sight, they set up camp just on the edge of the forest.

Yuna pulls out a small sphere, and begins muttering quiet words into it. It's become something of a ritual for her, keeping a journal of their journey.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten settles himself out of the way, the ball of fire shrinking somewhat, trying to be less noticeable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna's voice carries just enough that Aten can hear her talk about him...and someone she lost.

Permalink Mark Unread

-he doesn't want to intrude. And there's an- alien desire to comfort her? But he doesn't know how.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna can feel his discomfort through their bond, and looks up.

"Aten? Are you all right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches slightly when he realises he's drawn her attention. (And how could he have forgotten that summoners sometimes noticed his feelings?)

"I- yes. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to- to distract you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not distracting. I'm just...thinking. It helps when I do it aloud. You can come sit by me, if you like?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers uncertainly, and then moves a little closer to her. "I- are you alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I..." Her mouth forms the word fine, but what point is there in lying to someone who can feel your pain? She has a connection to Aten, to all her aeons. And it would help to say his name to someone who would remember him once she was gone.

"I...was in love. His name was Tidus. When the fayth stopped dreaming, he disappeared. I...I miss him."

Permalink Mark Unread

He's still for a moment, not sure how to respond. "I-I'm sorry," he says quietly. (And there's a surge of comforting warmth from him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The warmth envelops Yuna enough that she closes her eyes in bliss. "It's so strange, having you here without summoning you. I can feel what you are thinking, and I'm not drained by you. You are truly unique, Aten."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's that uncertain flicker again. "I can- not be here. I-if you'd prefer?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, I wouldn't prefer that. I like seeing you all the time. I would do the same for my other aeons, if I could."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we try some training?" Auron is suddenly before them, a serious look on his face.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches again. "I- yes, sir- if you- if you think- yes sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay." Yuna puts her sphere away and readies her stance-

A warm flood of fire flows from her.

Permalink Mark Unread

A large creature leaps from her, growling ferociously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flinches away and-

Is abruptly between Yuna and the creature. (He feels like he should remember this, but he's not sure he does, and he needs to protect-)

Permalink Mark Unread

"No! No, Aten! This is Ifrit, he is the Kilika Isle aeon. He's a friend!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Iftrit growls and curls around Yuna, protecting her from Aten.

He gives off a feeling of contentment and protection.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches away from them all, trying to make himself smaller, less of a target-

"M'sorry. Sorrysorrysorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

The aeon reaches out, a sense of quiet and calm radiating from it.

Soft. Calm. Quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

-That's- familiar?

(A previous summoner.)

(They'd all been angry and scared and hurt. But this-)

Somehow he's visibly trembling, but he's...not as panicked.

"I-I-" (He messed up, he knows he did, he doesn't know how to make it better.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit casts a fire spell, aiming to heal Aten.

He growls comfortingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Oh. That-

He'd forgotten how nice that felt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hoped you two would get along," Yuna says happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good." Auron looks approving. "Control of your fire is possible, you just need to be shown how."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu keeps water spells handy, just in case.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit rumbles pleasantly, like a loud cat's purr.

Permalink Mark Unread

He seems startled, both by Yuna's happiness, and Auron's approval. (And if he's keeping a cautious eye on Lulu, no-one needs to know.)

After a moment, he shifts back into his humanoid form, holding his hand out to Ifrit cautiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit happily drops his head into Aten's hand. There is fire in him, Aten can feel it, but Ifrit's is well controlled. It feels like a simmering heat, a slow burn.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Yeah, he's not that, and he's not sure how to be that. But he won't hurt Ifrit, won't hurt someone Yuna cares about, and that's important. Even if the idea of her caring about her aeons is still alien (and yet far too familiar, a memory, just out of reach, something long forgotten).

"I- Yes. I can-" He can't be what Ifrit is, it's too different. But he can- be closer to it. "Yes, sir," he says, thoughtful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit growls at the honorific.

A feeling blossoms from him, Not Better. Same.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna watches rapturously. She's never thought to have her aeons interact like this. It's beautiful.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches a little away from Ifrit. Sorry- Not used to- Difficult.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit lets him pull away, but keeps sending those feelings.

Not Better. Same. All of Us.

He shows Aten images of the other aeons, the ones living in Yuna alongside him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, slow and wondering. (He doesn't trust it yet, he can't, but It's- Amazing to see.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles hugely, feeling the softness between them. It's beautiful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit keeps sending warm feelings, and the occasional burst of fire through Aten, trying to calm his racing mind.

Permalink Mark Unread

By some miracle, it works. He settles. He's still uncertain, but he's not worrying about having messed up, if anything, he's basking in Ifrit's warmth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit rumbles happily, nudging Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna presses her hands to her heart, gasping happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Very good," Auron says with a nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu lets her spells go, frowning, but she does seem a little pleased.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten responds positively to Yuna's happiness again, and seems...relieved in the face of Auron's approval.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you feel, Aten?" She asks, wanting verbal confirmation of those warm feelings from him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He pauses! Not sure how to explain it. He doesn't have the words for this.

"I- warm," he settles on eventually.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Me too,” she says happily, cuddled between two fire monsters.

Permalink Mark Unread

-that gets a flicker of happiness. Happy that she's happy. He settles down a little more.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari shares around campfire cooked food, offering some to Aten with a look of confusion.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head. "I- no thank you, sir, I don't- need."

Permalink Mark Unread

His confusion cleared up, Kimhari nods and gives it instead to Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna accepts it and eats a little, picking at it with half a mind still on Ifrit and Aten.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron accepts food, but doesn't seem to eat anything. The group doesn't notice, they appear used to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Aten notices Auron not eating, he doesn't draw attention to it. He does nudge Yuna's attention towards her food a little - she needs to eat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna looks at her food guiltily. "I know, but I'm just so excited! This is so wondrous."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu's smile is small, but it's enough to be certain that Lulu loves Yuna very much.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten hums a little. "But if you eat you have- more energy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very true," Yuna says seriously, but her smile somewhat dulls the seriousness. She eats away, though Aten can probably feel how much attention she is giving to the bond between her and her aeons.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu actually smiles, even though it's a small one, at Aten. "The aeon is correct, Yuna. You eat like a bird."

Before, it was because of grief. Lulu is glad that she has a different reason now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is a little startled when Lulu smiles at him, and- isn't entirely sure what to do with it, except to keep trying to look like not a threat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu notices this, and looks away, keeping herself appearing nonchalant.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna finishes her food first, and looks to Ifrit, sharing a non verbal conversation with him.

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, and with a final burst of flame towards Aten, he’s gone, slipping back into his place in Yuna’s heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna sighs, and a strain in her shoulders she didn’t know she had loosens. She’s very tired all of a sudden. She guesses that a full days journey plus keeping Ifrit out so long has drained her.

She yawns, covering her mouth with the back of her hand. “Sorry,” she manages to get out.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a momentary sense of loss, but mostly-

Aten understands that keeping aeons out is exhausting, and it's at least somewhat obvious that he doesn't think Yuna should've done it for so long.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m okay, I have to get better at keeping them out for longer. I’ll need them all to fight Sin, and I’ve got to be strong enough to do that.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- you- you will be." (She's already so much stronger than the last summoners who had him.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna ducks her head shyly, beaming from the praise. “Thank you. I hope I can become High Summoner. That would be the best thing I could ever do, bring the Calm back to Spira.”

Permalink Mark Unread

-He'll take her word for that. The words are...familiar, but he can't quite reach for what they mean.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna should rest. We have a long day ahead, crossing the Calm Plains will take a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Yes- yes of course, Sir Auron."

She smile guiltily at Aten. "Will watch for us tonight?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes. Of-of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, Aten."

She curls up with Lulu, settling against the hard ground like it was a feather mattress.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari settles near the path, eyes closed but sitting upright.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron leans against a tree, and appears to be sleeping.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Aten isn't so sure that Auron is actually sleeping, but he isn't going to disturb him.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning is just like the previous, with a lot of stern coaxing from Auron to get everyone moving.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How was your night, Aten? Are you okay?" Yuna asks, once they start out into the Calm Plains.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I, uh, yes, ma'am, I'm- I'm fine?" He doesn't have a lot of experience of people asking how he is.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess you've been alone for some time. You haven't had friends to look after you."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods slowly. "I- don't remember- I've just been- alone." Shrugs. "S'quiet mostly."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Do you remember why your fayth was hidden? I’m sorry if that’s too personal.” Yuna’s teeth worry against her lip.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shakes his head slowly. "I just- something about-" he shudders a little. "I was- It kept me safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I suppose that’s true, though being in a temple would be just as, if not, safer. Not that I’m judging you! I only mean to...” Yuna trails off, fingers gripping the fabric of her skirt. “I’m sorry. I’m just sad to think of your fayth, that young boy...being alone.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He shrugs again. "I- I guess it was- lonely. But- It stopped people- from-" He shivers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna doesn’t push, she can see the pain on his face. What kind of white mage would she be if she caused someone pain?

“Here, Lulu taught me this spell.” She casts a small flame, and sends it to Aten. “Seeing how well you get on with Ifrit, I thought any fire spell would do.”

Permalink Mark Unread

-Startled gratitude. "I- I- thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Seeing him brighten a bit is a balm for Yuna’s heart. “Anytime. It’s an easy spell to do.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers shyly. "I- if you- you don't- have to?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna falls silent. Then her lips tremble a little. “It’s the right thing to do,” she says shakily. It sounds like she’s quoting something.

She wipes away an errant tear, straightening up and smiling. “A couple of days travel, and we’ll reach the closest Rin’s. We can rest and restock before we head through the mountains. It will be cold, so you’ll be very handy there.”

Permalink Mark Unread

-Oh. He- he didn't mean to make her upset but-

"I- yes, I can- I can help."

Permalink Mark Unread

“We found you at the right time, it seems,” Yuna says softly, with a gentle smile to match.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- uh, yes. I- I guess you- did."

(He's brightened a little again, happy to have some kind of use.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna's smile stays bright, at seeing Aten's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Half the day goes by with ease, but soon as the sun reaches it's peak, there's a loud roar-

A fiend.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sinspawn," Kimhari calls to the group.

"Everyone be ready!" Auron shouts, unsheathing his sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers out, and is a line of fire between them and the direction of the roar.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fiend reveals itself as a ruminant, and it baulks at the flames, roaring ineffectually. It takes a deep breath in, flames gathering around its mouth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's going to cast a fire spell!" Lulu yells, already flinging ice spells at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten spirals up. Any attempts at fire spells will end up focused directly on Aten.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fiend makes eye contact with Yuna. The flames pour out from its mouth, arcing towards her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna gasps, halfway through casting protega.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope. Aten surges out, consuming the flames before they get anywhere near Yuna, and wrapping around the fiend, intent on destroying it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aten!" Yuna shouts, terrified for her aeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fiend howls furiously, and then drops from the weight of Aten's fire, dissolving into pyreflies.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten follows it down, flames folding smaller, clearly worn out from that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna is quick to cast a fire spell, sending it towards Aten.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu does the same with a much stronger spell.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna runs up to the little ball of flame.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fire spells have helped some, but he still flinches slightly at the sudden movement. "I- I-" (It sounds almost like he wants to apologise again, even though he has no clue what for.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were so brave, I'm so proud! You did so well," Yuna soothes, wishing she could hug him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You protected your summoner well. Perhaps we should name you a guardian." Auron is only half-joking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari nods sagely.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers uncertainly. "I- I did? I just-" (Doesn't have the words for the alien-not-alien desire to protect Yuna, and her guardians, the first people who hadn't hurt him in almost all of his memory.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You protected me." Yuna reaches a hand out, first cloaking it with protega, to gently stroke along Aten's embers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-S'what m'supposed to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He's not wrong, but Yuna doesn't want to have him expend so much energy every time. "We're a team. We protect each other," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

-There's that confused flicker again, but: "I- as you say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All of us. Same," Yuna quotes from last night, with a beaming smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you move?" Auron asks the aeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I, yes, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We keep moving then."

Auron leads the way again, not pausing to wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna is quick to jump up and keep moving.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Aten follows as well. He flags a little, but not so much as to cause a problem.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari keeps pace with him, watching over Aten in thanks for saving Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Aten isn't sure what to do with that. "I- I won't hurt her, sir?" he promises quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kimhari knows. Watches, so that Aten will not hurt himself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...oh. I-" Yeah. He really has no idea how to respond to that. "As you say, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

The ronso grunts. He seems to have no need to explain himself. He keeps moving forward, though is careful to match Aten’s pace.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten doesn't seem to feel the need to speak either.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then they travel in comfortable silence, until the sun dips below the horizon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron calls for camp to be made. They start setting up in the shadow of a hill, relatively protected, but it still worries Auron to be so exposed.

Fiends aren't the only problem in these plains, Spira's native fauna can be just as deadly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna casts a huge protega over the camp, shaking a little with the effort, but has a happy smile once she's done.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten settles down again. He's looking a little brighter than he did earlier, but still slightly wan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna summons Ifrit once she's done setting up camp, and he eagerly lopes over to Aten, already summoning fire to heal him.

Well. Good.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's that pleased flicker again. "Couldn't let it hurt her," he murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Protect.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna comes and sits beside them, leaning into Ifrit. "How's he doing?" She says to the beastly aeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

He. Good. Strong.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers shyly, still unused to praise, and not sure what to do with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna sends images of the fight through their bond to Ifrit.

Permalink Mark Unread

He puffs up proudly, sending another fire spell to Aten.

Learn. Stronger. Brighter.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I-I'll try. I- don't really. Have training. I just... Do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hard. Alone. Easier. Friends. Share. Knowledge.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- guess it. Would be. Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

I Teach?

Permalink Mark Unread

Shy flicker. "I-I'd like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit nods approvingly.

He begins to show Aten, through a series of images, how to change and warp the shape of his fire, to attack and defend, to create arcs and walls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten pays close attention. It's not that different to how he shifts and shapes himself. Except it's using the fire as an extension of himself, rather than just a part of him. He learns quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit shows him how to best use his fire against enemies weak to it, and how to change and vary it for enemies that can resist. He tries to-

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit disappears and Yuna takes a shaky breath in. "Sorry, I'm so sorry," she says to Aten, looking guilty. "I couldn't sustain him for much longer."

Permalink Mark Unread

-mildly distressed flicker. "I- no, it's fine. I- you shouldn't have- I'm sorry. I forgot. I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m okay, Aten. Just a little tired,” she tries to soothe.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers uncertainly. "I- you didn't have to- you should've said you were tired-"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna looks twice as guilty at that. “I should’ve, yes. But you two were working so hard, I didn’t want to disturb you. When I’m stronger, I could leave Ifrit out for hours. I’m sorry I can’t do that now.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- no. It's fine. I- should've remembered. I-"

Permalink Mark Unread

“It’s okay that you didn’t! You looked so happy to be learning. And tomorrow you’ll get to learn some more!”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yuna needs food. Then rest,” Kimhari rumbles, handing the summoner food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna takes it with a smile. “Thank you, Kimhari. What would I do without you?”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yuna will never know,” he says warmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Good. It's good that Yuna has people looking out for her. (People who remember human constraints.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The night goes on, and after finishing her food, Yuna wishes Aten a good night and goes to sleep, curled up with Lulu.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten settles in to keep watch again.

Permalink Mark Unread

A few hours later, Yuna awakes with a gasp, heart racing and brain desperately trying to banish the images. They were so real- he was there and she...

Yuna lets out the tiniest pained sob as tears flow down her cheeks. She gets up and stumbles away from camp, trying to keep herself quiet as she cries.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then there's a blanket of fire settling gently around her, warm and comforting but not burning. (Never burning.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna gasps, looking at the fire. It’s not...it’s not hurting it’s...holding her?

Aten is giving her a hug.

That comfort, that warmth, makes her sob even harder, raising one hand to her shoulder, touching the aeon’s flames in thanks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Good. It's good that he can help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Its some time before Yuna calms herself. She takes a few shuddering breaths in, wiping tears from her face. She cuddles into the fire a little more, feeling calmer. “Thank you, Aten.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Well then. He's just gonna stay here for the rest of the night.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna soon goes back to sleep, sniffiling a little, curled up beneath Aten’s warmth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron is the first to “wake”, and spot Yuna and Aten a little ways from the camp. He’d heard Yuna wake in the night but hadn’t known how to comfort her. She’s lost too much already, and he didn’t know how to tell her soft things to soothe

He keeps quiet and watches them from afar.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is still immediately aware of the attention and flickers away from Yuna, making himself into a small, unobtrusive ball.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna stirs sleepily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron takes that as his cue to start rousing the others.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once roused, Kimhari rebuilds the fire and toasts bread over it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna blearily tries to reach for Aten, but can’t physically feel him.

She sits up and rubs her eyes, finally spotting him. She’s confused, he gave her affection so easily last night, is he okay?

She waves at him, trying a sleepy smile, rather than the worry she feels.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers a little. He's alright, but-

(But there's a faint memory there, of the fact that he doesn't really...like physical contact. Doesn't have an expectation of it not hurting.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna is horrified. “You- you shouldn’t have- if you didn’t- if you don’t like- I’m so sorry, Aten!”

Permalink Mark Unread

"But- but you were you needed- something."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I...” She did. That’s true, she needed comfort. But for him to make himself hurt to make her feel better, that’s...

“It isn’t right! You shouldn’t have to do that if you don’t like it. I- thank you, for what you did. I really appreciate it. I just don’t want you to feel bad.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-oh. I-" (No-one (nearly) had cared about that before. Even in his barely remembered life before he was here.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles at Aten, a little weak, but still a smile.

“Never forget yourself, Aten. You’re just as important as anyone else. I trust you with my life, I hope you can trust me with at least making you a little happier.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers a little. "I- I'll try."

Permalink Mark Unread

“If...if I do something to make you sad, just tell me. And I’ll stop. I’ll pay more attention to the bond, I promise.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari interrupts to hand her toast, and nods approvingly at Aten.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Your eyes- they’re so red. Are you all right?” Lulu croons to Yuna, cupping her face once she reaches her.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Oh, yes. I’m fine. Slept poorly but Aten helped with that.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers in a way that might be intended to be agreement, but doesn't say anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

“If everyone’s ready, we go.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna waves Aten over and hurries to join Auron.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten follows obediently, but is giving Auron a slightly wider berth than usual.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna worries about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the day passes the same as yesterday, with a few fiends attacking but all easily defeated by the guardians and Aten.

Soon, a building can be seen on the horizon, brightly coloured and surrounded by a ramshackle market.

“We rest here,” Auron says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna pokes through the market outside with Lulu, investigating the Al Bhed artifacts curiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten makes himself as unnoticeable as possible.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a couple(?) nearby, the woman dressed like an Al Bhed, and playing a stringed instrument with a bow, dancing as she does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her companion is stood watching, face entirely concealed by a vibrant carnival mask.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna starts swaying to the music, grinning, and then heads over to give the violin player a few gil in thanks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu keeps an eye on them, but isn’t too suspicious of them. She knows the Al Bhed have suffered much recently.

Permalink Mark Unread

The violinist is gracious and thankful.

"I am grateful I could bring even a small measure of joy to you, Lady Summoner."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna goes to perform the prayer, but her hands stop. Should she do that when she knows that Yevon isn’t real?

“Thank you so much,” she settles for instead. “You play beautifully.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," she says again, bowing slightly. "I try to bring solace in the ways I can. I wish you skill and good fortune on your journey."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna bows. “Thank you. And good fortune to you as well.”

She dances back over to Lulu, a real smile on her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the woman goes back to playing.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Is the one in the mask watching them? It's nearly impossible to tell.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten relaxes some when Yuna returns to Lulu's side. Apparently he'd been on edge watching Yuna and the stranger.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna looks worriedly at Aten, but doesn’t ask any questions.

Permalink Mark Unread

A man, dressed as a priest, walks into view, a few guards with him. He seems to be making his way to Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten makes himself smaller, but also moves so that he's ready to protect Yuna if needed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu looks up, and a small smile curls her lips. “I see you drew the short straw,” she calls, walking over to greet the priest.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I just thought you all could use a friendly face.” The priest bows, smiling sadly.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yuna, this is Father Zuke. He’s an old friend.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Hello.” Yuna performs the prayer, even though it feels strange.

Permalink Mark Unread

Father Zuke does the same. “Unfortunately I come bearing bad news. Yuna has been excommunicated, the order comes from Maester Mika himself.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna hugs herself, trying not to cry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten drifts closer, tries to provide comfort somehow.

Permalink Mark Unread

“So he’s made it clear. It changes nothing.” Auron comforts in his own way.

Permalink Mark Unread

“But-“ Yuna doesn’t actually know what to say. But it does change things, she feels bereft. Lost.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Gagazet will be hard to traverse.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Father Zuke nods. “Indeed. Your people are very devout. Hopefully you will get there before news spreads.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Hopefully. Thank you for telling us this news, Father.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Zuke nods. “Of course. And if you don’t mind my saying, stay safe.”

He bows, and heads back the way he came.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten continues to just...be there. Warm, supportive. (Yuna has her aeons, they have no less faith in her, regardless of what the Church of Yevon said.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna rubs a hand up her arm. “It changes nothing,” she says, quoting Auron.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu wraps her arms around Yuna, stroking her hair. “What would Wakka say if he were here?”

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna chuckles weakly. “He’d probably make a joke about Rikku’s machina being all right now.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Or he’d try to throw a blitzball at Father Zuke,” Lulu says, laughing as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna tucks herself into Lulu’s arms. “They should be here.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yes.”

Lulu just holds her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. They can't be, but Aten can. And Yuna doesn't need Yevon to defeat Sin anyway. (He's forgetting something, what's he forgotten?)

Permalink Mark Unread

After a few minutes Yuna pulls away and wipes her eyes. Her smile is weak, but there. “All right. I’m tired after all that walking. I’m thinking food and then sleep.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron chuckles. “Sounds good to me. Inside?”

Permalink Mark Unread

The Al Bhed running the shop sticks her head outside. “I’m sorry, but we don’t allow creatures inside the shop. Could the...er...fireball? Could he wait outside?”

Permalink Mark Unread

“He’s an aeon. He’s not going to hurt anyone.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“It’s all right, Lulu. I’ll wait out here with him. If you could bring food out to us, that would be wonderful.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I-it's okay? You don't have to- I'll be okay on my own?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"But you shouldn't have to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kimhari will stay too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu sighs. "Fine. But you're inside to sleep, Yuna."

She and Auron head inside to organise meals.

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers, shy and grateful. (He was starting to understand that he'd been lonely.)

"I- thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had a thought, actually Aten. How fast can you fly?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I'm not sure. I've never really- Fast? Just not sure how fast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lets find out!"

A wave of energy bursts from Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor bursts out, crowing happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna leaps onto her back, and she takes off. "Come on, Aten!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He follows, not entirely sure of what the aim is here, but eager to help his summoner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna lets out a whoop, urging Valefor on. "Bet you can't catch me, Aten!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He follows after her, never quite 'catching' her, but staying close on Valefor's tail.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor calls out to Aten, a sweet high sound.

Joy.

Permalink Mark Unread

He shifts into his more humanoid form, looping around. Yes.

(He'd forgotten so much. And this was one of those things.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna lets one hand go, to wave at Aten. She never feared falling off Valefor, knowing the aeon would catch her. As she always did.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor crows, looping in Aten's trail.

Permalink Mark Unread

This is so tantalisingly familiar.

And at the same time so new.

He didn't know (had forgotten?) that sometimes, summoners could be like this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna can feel his joy, and next to the fire in her heart, there's a deep-seated warmth.

"How much faster can you go!?" Yuna yells, as Valefor speeds up to fly next to Aten.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite a bit?" he speeds up a little. "I-" Can't explain that wind resistance isn't really a thing for him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go for it!" She calls, urging him on.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he does. He sheds his humanoid form to concentrate on speed instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna whoops, watching him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor calls a high pitched tone, sounding very much like an expression of triumph.

Permalink Mark Unread

He loops back around to them, his exhilaration and excitement and almost palpable force.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna laughs, feeling his joy. It warms her right to her core, seeing Aten at his freest.

"Come on, better get back before Lulu gets mad!" She calls out, and Valefor immediately shoots into a dive, drawing a surprised and exhilarated whoop from Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten dives after them. (There's a tiny flicker of concern, of fear, at the idea of Lulu being mad.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor pulls out of the dive ten metres above the ground, and then slowly circles down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna slides off Valefor's back once she's landed, and with a quick hug, sends Valefor away. She disappears into Yuna.

With a sigh of happiness, Yuna brushes her hair out of her eyes, and grins at Aten. "That was fun!"

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods, flickering shyly. "I don't- it's been a while since I could-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've done that before? Really? Tell me about your summoner then!" Yuna bounces eagerly on the balls of her feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

He dims a little. "I don't- really remember. Just the ones who-" he flinches.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, Aten, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to bring up bad memories."

She sends a little fire spell towards him, trying to comfort him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- It's- okay. You didn't- It's okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not, and she can sense it's not, but she doesn't know how else to comfort him.

"You should've been treated better. I promise to show you a better life than they did."

Permalink Mark Unread

Confused flicker. "I. Um. As you say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, determined. "We'll fly together and train together and you'll become strong. Just like all my aeons. All my friends. We can beat sorrow, and pain. I know we can."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her optimism is almost infectious, and he brightens some at that. "I- O-okay. -I-I'll do my best!"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Me too!” Yuna says, and is so happy to see him so positive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu comes outside then with food for Yuna and Kimhari. “We saw from inside. You looked very comfortable up there,” she says with a small smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Aten isn't entirely sure she's talking to him, so his only response is a slight flicker.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu’s smile is approving of Aten, so he’s definitely included in the statement.

“Your hair is a mess,” she teases Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna looks sad for a moment, and her heart thuds painfully. She remembers a morning months (really?) ago, with him.

“I’ll fix it later!” She says, batting Lulu away playfully. Her smile stays fixed, she can cry later.

Permalink Mark Unread

He pulses warmth and comfort over the bond to her, not sure what else to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at Aten in thanks, and then eats the food Lulu brought out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari has already finished, and is standing guard nearby.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten settles near Yuna, but also seems to be keeping guard.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna finishes eating and sets aside her plate. She looks at the door to the tavern, frowns, and then takes her blanket out from her pack to wrap herself in.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari guesses quickly what she means to do. “No. Yuna goes inside.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“I don’t want to leave Aten on his own!” Yuna argues.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Kimhari stay with Aten. Yuna goes inside.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“But-”

Yuna looks to Aten to back her up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- you should. Go inside?" Aten says. "Safer. Warmer."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna pouts. “I’m being ganged up on! I’m the summoner!”

She grudgingly stands up.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Aten is right. Safer inside. Less reason for Kimhari to worry.”

Permalink Mark Unread

At that, Yuna ducks her head shyly. “I didn’t think you worried about anything.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“If Yuna care as much about Yuna as others, Kimhari would not have to.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna pokes her tongue out at the ronso, and then hugs him. He hugs her back, and is that purring she can hear? It’s at least warm rumbling.

“All right. I’ll see you both in the morning.” She waves at Aten and disappears inside the inn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten settles down again, nearer to Kimahri this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

The violinist is having an argument with her companion. She loses, sighs, and follows after Yuna into the Inn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her companion settles down, leaning against eir pack, tucking eir arms behind eir head and whistling quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari looks over his shoulder at the masked person.

He turns away. “You are not meant to be here.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"And yet: here I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Why.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are any of us?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Fiends linger where they should not. Kimhari stand guard.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I made a promise. I intend to keep it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers uncertainly at Kimahri's announcement.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari nods at that. “Promises like that should be kept. Kimhari make promise to a summoner once, that he would protect daughter.”

Kimhari settles on the ground, content to have the fiend nearby.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the fiend slides further down against the pack.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten relaxes some when Kimahri does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari settles into meditation, keeping part of his focus on the fiend and on Aten, watching over them both (and watching for anything suspicious surrounding the masked fiend).

Permalink Mark Unread

The masked fiend seems to be doing something approximating sleeping.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten seems thoughtful more than anything else, like something is familiar, that he can't quite put his finger on.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning Yuna is quick to rush outside and greet her friends. It’s clear she’s been crying, her eyes are puffy and red, but her cheerful attitude keeps up.

“Quiet night?” She asks Aten.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu hands out breakfast to Kimhari and Yuna, heading back inside to get her own.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mhmm," Aten flickers up and down in a nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

The violinist had come out a little earlier, and her and her fiend friend are sat eating their own breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Hello again,” Yuna greets the two once she’s certain of Aten’s well being.

She gestures with the food she’s holding. “Would you mind some extra company? I’m half Al Bhed, if that matters to you?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all," she smiles brilliantly. "A meal is often better when shared with friends, old or new."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna ducks her head, grinning, and takes a place by them. “Are you travellers? Or do you live here?” She asks between bites.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron sits by Yuna, keeping an eye on the masked person, but for the most part just to be a protective presence for her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Travellers. We don't like settling in anyone place for long."

Permalink Mark Unread

It's quite impressive just how easily the masked fiend can imply facial expressions. Ey's definitely raising eyebrows at Auron.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron raises his eyebrows right back.

Permalink Mark Unread

“What’s your end goal? Or do you aim to just explore all of Spira?”

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a sense of a smirk, and the fiend settles back more.

Permalink Mark Unread

"See as much of Spira as we can I guess. Life is fleeting." Pauses. "And we've both made promises. We intend to keep them."

Permalink Mark Unread

That quietens Yuna somewhat, and draws a pensive look on her face. “Me too. But I don’t know if I can keep it. I hope your promise is strong enough to keep.”

Permalink Mark Unread

(Aten burns a little brighter, his certainty that Yuna will manage.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"All you can do is your best."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Oh- oh, yes,” Yuna says with a nod of her head. She doesn’t say that they have the wrong idea, that her promise to Ti- him, was to not go to Zanarkand. To not sacrifice herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets her two shrewd looks, but they don't say anything further on the matter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten slides a little closer to Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

She brightens considerably, trying to move the subject along. "Are you heading towards Gagazet? Maybe we could travel together!"

Permalink Mark Unread

They share a look. "We appreciate the offer, and good friends do make a journey swifter, but it may not be the wisest."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna’s face falls a little. “Yes. You’re right. Joining a summoner’s group can be more dangerous than its worth sometimes.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“We should leave.” Auron’s voice brooks no argument.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't worry for ourselves, Lady Summoner," the fiend says, voice quiet enough that it would be easy to miss as Auron speaks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wish you luck, Lady Summoner," the woman says, not standing, but moving her hands through the motion of the prayer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna’s lips breaks out into a relieved and grateful smile as she performs the prayer back. “Thank you. It may not mean anything, but it is comforting.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu and Kimhari join them at the entrance.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron leads the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten follows after them.

Permalink Mark Unread

(They might feel eyes watching them till they're out of sight.)

Permalink Mark Unread

The days walk is long and fraught with danger. By the time they stop for the night, the group is exhausted.

“Rest.” Even Auron seems tired.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna drops to the earth, cuddling the group. “Uuuugghhh,” she moans.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten settled close to her again, trying to provide some comfort again. (He doesn't, really, remember what being tired feels like, not outside the ember-deep exhaustion of having fought too-hard and too-long.)

Yuna holds back from threading her hand through Aten’s fiery form.

“I should summon Ifrit for you,” she says sleepily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay. You should rest. You- You don't have to do things for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But I should..." Yuna's words trail off as she near succumbs to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sorry, Aten. Yuna wouldn't be so tired if she weren't constantly attacked."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten gives the impression of a startled blink. "I- it's not- it's fine? Really? And it's not- her- your? fault?"

Then he flinches slightly away from Auron. "I, uh- sorry, sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You apologise a lot for someone who has done no wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

He flinches again, tries to make himself smaller. "Sor-" Cuts himself off as he realises that that sounded like Auron didn't want him to apologise. Vibrates anxiously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It makes me think that your former summoners did not understand their roles. Did you have no good summoners?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- it's- hard. To remember. I get- flashes. Sometimes. Of- of things feeling- almost familiar. But-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They were not strong enough to fight her hold. I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Her, Sir Auron?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something you will learn."

Auron sits beside Yuna, taking a meditative pose.

Permalink Mark Unread

-He knows about her? How does he know? He forces himself smaller, when what he wants to do is lash out, to hurt, to protect himself. (Except Auron seemed to decry her? It didn't make any sense.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is the Guardian of the Final Aeon. You will meet her soon enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You...remember meeting her, Sir Auron?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. And I will remember you meeting her too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten doesn't quite shudder. (His memories are hazy, but he knows when he fears.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna feels the not-shudder, and looks to Aten to help.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- it-it's nothing. Just- It's nothing." (He feared Her, but She had to be right, didn't She?)

Permalink Mark Unread

"O-okay." She wishes she knew what to do, but in the meantime sends warm, comforting feelings through the bond.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri takes care of dinner while this goes on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten echoes the feeling back at Yuna, trying to persuade her not to worry. (He doesn't know what to do with her worry.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna's teeth worry her lower lip, but she doesn't push for anything else, and accepts Aten's warmth.

Not long after dinner, she's asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu soon follows her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once they're both asleep, Auron sits next to Kimahri. "The masked person at the Rin's. Ey were a fiend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kimahri knows."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I recall Yuna telling me how you attacked Tidus on the suspicion he was a fiend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kimahri did not need to test. Masked one was a fiend, but no threat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- think they were familiar? I don't- they didn't make a move to attack?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Familiar how?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- like a memory of a memory? It's- hard to grasp. They were- I don't know, I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You don't need to apologise."

He ponders for a moment. "Perhaps they were a former summoner. I suppose it doesn't really matter. We won't encounter them again."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- don't think. They were a summoner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps not now. But there is a possibility that they were once. Can someone still be a summoner once they are undead?" The last question is more to himself, wondering at the idea. Belgemine, a summoner they had encountered a few times, was a fiend and still summoned, but perhaps she was an isolated case.

Permalink Mark Unread

-He wants to try and argue that further, but he doesn't know how to, so instead, he falls quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron notices. He makes himself a little more comfortable.

"You know, Tidus would've argued more with me. He argued everything. It was like the world was against him," Auron chuckles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- I wouldn't know where to start, sir?" Aten says, a little timid.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's all right. I don't mean to disregard your feelings. I forget that you had many lives, and your thoughts about a familiar person are probably correct."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten shrugs a little, curls his knees up to his chest. "I-it's fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron nods, not willing to push the boy.

"I'll get some rest. I'll see you in the morning." He stands and makes for the sleeping girls, lying near them and closing his eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri meditates.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten keeps watch.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning, everyone is up, fed and walking quickly, eager to put distance across the plains.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna walks with Aten, creating little puffs of fire to try and continue Ifrit's teachings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten mimics her, quiet and thoughtful.

Permalink Mark Unread

About midday they'll run across...a machina? Except the air is thick with magic as well. It's hissing, and spluttering and-

Exploding.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is immediately a protective wall of fire between Yuna and the explosion.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri roars, pointing his spear.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu casts watera across the explosion, expression furious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna quickly casts shell and protect, trying to help her guardians.

"Thank you!" She says to the wall of fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's abruptly rapid-fire yelling in Al Bhed. "Cdub. Cdub. Fryd tu oui drehg oui'na tuehk?! E ymsucd ryt ed! Cdub dryd, oui eteudc!"

A slightly bedraggled woman in Al Bhed garb appears. "Kad net uv dryd fydan!"

AN: Al Bhed Translator.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna recognises one word. "Stop! Lulu, she's saying stop!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's exploded a machina! I won't have it hurt you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm fine! Aten's protecting me! Stop!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu, begrudgingly, calls off the water.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Drana fych'd cibbucat du pa yhouha rana! Yht ed haynmo fungat! Oui tecdnyldat sa!"

She doesn't seem inclined to slow down her speech, or switch from Al Bhed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers, slightly uncertainly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna can't keep up with the rapid flow of Al Bhed, she only knew what her mother had taught her. She shrugs helplessly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What were you trying to do?" Auron says, firmly in Yevonese.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fro tuac hu-uha cbayg y lejemecat myhkiyka?" she mutters darkly.

"What concern is that of yours?" she retorts, finally slipping out of Al Bhed.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You nearly killed our summoner. That is our concern."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu says nothing, but her gaze could fell lesser people.

Permalink Mark Unread

She flicks lightning sideways at the machina. "Experiment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were seeing how many people you could kill with a single bolt of lightening?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're...a mage Al Bhed? I thought Al Bhed couldn't use magic!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I know the answer to that."

She gives Yuna something vaguely resembling a smile. "And yet here I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Another voice comes, speaking in Al Bhed again, heralding the arrival of a teenager to the scene. "Sygehk vneahtc ykyeh, cec?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Drao cdyndat ed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rammu! E ys Yuna, vnus dra Ecma uv Besaid. E ys y cissuhan. Ed'c mujamo du saad oui pudr," Yuna says, understanding a little more of what they're saying, since it's not rapid-fire and furious.

Permalink Mark Unread

That gets a sharp narrow-eyed look from the first woman, who's eyes snap to Auron, Kimahri and Lulu, and there's a sense that she's eyeing them up for a fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh cool, you speak Al Bhed! Your accent is terrible! I'm Anri, this is my sister Hasira!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna bows, grinning. "I know, my mother always said so too. She tried her best to teach me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu glares right back at Hasira.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron rests one hand on his sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri pokes Hasira in the side. "Stoppit," ey instructs, turns back to Yuna. "But like, we're not born Al Bhed. Which is why Hasira here can do magic. They just took us in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh! Well. That makes sense. I'm only half Al Bhed, that's why I can. I just thought maybe you were also only half," Yuna says by way of apology.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah. No Al Bhed blood in us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mega uin bynahdc fuimt'ja luhcundat fedr 'raydrahc'," Hasira mutters sourly, nearly too quiet to be overheard.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's barely any in me. Only one eye," Yuna says cheerfully, pointing at her green eye.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still more than us!" Anri says cheerfully. "So, like, you said you were a summoner? Are you on your pilgrimage?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You mean death march."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna recoils, looking down. "It's not like that, I want to complete it. I want to bring the Calm. No one is forcing me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna," Lulu says softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why? Because they've told you it's the best thing you can do? Figure out how to actually get rid of Sin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hasira," Anri says quietly, touching eir sister's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is the only way to get rid of Sin. One life for all others? A worthy trade to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hasira kicks the part of the machine, swears. "If they weren't brainwashing teenagers into it."

(Is she even still talking about Yuna?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna bristles. "No one brainwashed me into anything! I want to do this for Spira!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hasira," Anri's voice is low, and intent. "Go poke your machina."

Permalink Mark Unread

-Amazingly, Hasira listens to that, and stalks away, although not too far.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry about her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers uncertainly again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna lets out a long breath, calming herself. "It's...it's fine. I don't expect everyone to see the necessity. Lulu and Wakka tried to talk me out of it too."

She sends a brief flood of warmth to Aten, to calm him.

Permalink Mark Unread

It helps some.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri closes eir eyes for a moment, takes a deep breath and-

Permalink Mark Unread

Shiva appears, pirouetting, and looking to Yuna and her group in curiosity.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers backwards, startled and concerned and-

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aten it's okay! It's okay, she won't hurt you. She won't."

Yuna looks up at Anri in wonder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- no. She won't. I'm sorry I- didn't think about that."

Pauses. "Hasira's got her reasons for thinking the way she does. She's...not very good at separating things sometimes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's okay, Aten summons himself, I wouldn't make him come into this situation."

Yuna nods knowingly. "I understand, though I would recommend that she doesn't insult the summoner's way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I rather think you'd take insulting over her trying to murder your guardians. She's a work in progress."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I feel much the same way,” Yuna says with a nod. “Some days I feel like I’m still a child, learning at the priest’s feet.”

Learning things that are false. She shudders involuntarily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-You know, don't you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Know?” Yuna tilts her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That Yevon's talking out of its arse. That it's a lie."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna dips her head, nodding slightly. “I know now. We were- I was...” Her shoulders shake slightly. She takes in a deep breath.

She looks back up. “Yevon may be wrong, but that doesn’t mean the Pilgrimmage is. I still believe in giving Spira the Calm.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose that's your right," Anri says quietly. "I still feel like there has to be a better way."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I think your sister is definitely going to try to find one,” Yuna says with a soft smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri smiles, and glances over to Hasira. "I gave up on that." Pauses, looks back to Shiva. "Thank you, so vneaht."

(And the aeon fades away with a smile.)

"I left my Pilgrimmage. After-" ey shakes eir head. "But Hasira still looks for a way. Has seen a few too many young summoners setting out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna doesn’t try and argue that they’re brave for doing it, or that they are the best of Spirans. She doesn’t want to argue with Anri. She actually likes her, maybe it’s too soon, but it’s good to see a fellow summoner, a fellow teenager.

“She’s brave. And strong. And, if you don’t mind me saying, a little frightening.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu seems to sink a little at Anri’s words. That’s the very argument she tried with Yuna, that she was giving away her life too young. She hasn’t even experienced life, and she was already so ready to be done with it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's terrifying when she wants to be," Anri agrees with a laugh. "And even a little when she isn't trying. She's not very good at not being threatening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It kept you safe," Hasira calls, sounding nothing so much as fondly amused.

Permalink Mark Unread

“A wise choice in a guar- oh, I mean, a good trait for an older sister to have. Lulu’s a bit like that too, though she prefers to be cold,” Yuna laughs.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Revealing all my secrets?” Lulu scolds playfully, ruffling Yuna’s hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Little sibling prerogative!" Anri declares cheerfully. "At least. That's what Rikku always said!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna’s heart stops. “...Rikku?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Kind of my sister as well? Adopted at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

“She...she’s my cousin.”

Was her cousin? Is someone still your family if they’re not...if they’re...

Tears spring into Yuna’s eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu wraps her arm around Yuna’s shoulders, rubbing her comfortingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri lays one big hand over Yuna’s shoulder, trying to comfort her too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hasira's attention is abruptly back on them entirely. "-You're that Yuna?" Beat. "What happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna’s voice is small and desolate. “After...after Home, I was kidnapped by the Guado. Taken to Bevelle. Cid and the others came to rescue me. We...” Heaving breath. “They-”

Yuna gasps in a sob, tears escaping.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Wakka, another friend, and Rikku were left to die in the flooded prison,” Lulu answers for Yuna, her voice deadly and furious.

Permalink Mark Unread

“No one escapes from there,” Auron adds. He sounds sure, but there is sadness in his tone.

Permalink Mark Unread

-And that's the look of a woman who's just assigned herself a mission. "I guess we'll need to change that then."

Permalink Mark Unread

“It wasn’t meant as a challenge. You most likely won’t find them.” Despite his words, Auron sounds impressed.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You...will?” Yuna sounds torn, hopeful that they might be found, but still sad from her surety they have died.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see. I owe it to Cid for us to be sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna says nothing, but she looks ashamed, even as she still cries.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Hasira doesn't think you should've checked. And if I know Rikku she'd have yelled at you if you'd tried."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Exactly.” Lulu is nodding approvingly. “We couldn’t have you be there for another second. You were so brave to fight your way out of that maze.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna doesn’t want to remember it. Doesn’t want to be back there, seeing Tidus’ face bursting with relief, before he-

And knowing that she was leaving Wakka and Rikku to-

She turns away, swallowing painfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers closer to her, all warmth and attempting reassurance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're obvious," Hasira says. "Any summoner is. I'm not. Even when they think I'm Al Bhed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna opens her heart entirely to Aten’s reassurance, taking it in to prop herself up. She’s supposed to have a journey full of laughter, to make it easier for the ones she’s leaving behind.

Permalink Mark Unread

“We would greatly appreciate you finding out. Either way, it’s some reassurance. Though I hope you find them well.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yes,” Yuna agrees, turning back. “And I’m very glad to meet you both. You are family, always.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"We will!" Anri says brightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Correction: I will. You're staying with Rin, Anri."

Anri opens eir mouth to argue.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Ey could-” come with us? No. Not after Wakka and Rikku. Not after seeing the anger in Hasira about her pilgrimage.

Yuna bites her lip, and stays silent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri pauses, obviously understands what Yuna was about to say. "How about I go with our cousin?" There's something ey's not saying here, something Hasira's picking up on anyway. "Easier to track them back down once you find Rikku." (If ey has any doubt Hasira will find Rikku alive and well, ey isn't showing it.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Hasira raises an eyebrow. And it's not just aimed at Anri, but at Yuna and her guardians as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

“We would protect her. We swear. And once we return from Zanarkand, Cid has promised to collect us. Ey’d be back with family.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“O-only if you want to come with us.” Yuna is twisting her hands nervously.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do!" Anri promises. "I want to get to know you!" (Doesn't say that this is the only chance ey'll get.)

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment, Hasira nods, and wraps Anri in a hug. "Stay safe," she orders.

Looks up to Yuna's guardians. "It's on your heads if ey gets hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yes ma’am.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles, a real smile. “I am looking forward to getting to know you too.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Hasira gives an approving nod. "Well. The day is wasting. And I now have a long journey ahead of me, as do you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hasira isn't very good at saying 'goodbye'."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna is well-practised at them.

“Fare well, Hasira. Good luck.” She bows.

Permalink Mark Unread

“We’ll be hoping for your safe return.”

She doesn’t say “all of your safe return”, not wanting to pin too many hopes. It would crush her to not have them realised.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hasira kisses Anri's head, fetches something from near the machina, kicks it, and heads in a vaguely Bevellewards direction.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri scratches the back of eir head. "So. Uh. Yeah. You got me now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is still protectively close to Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yuna has something of an adoption problem,” Auron agrees with a deep chuckle.

“Come. We go.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri leads the way this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You can walk by me, if you like,” Yuna says, still scrubbing away her earlier tears. “Me and Aten.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri smiles and falls in beside them. "Hi, Aten," ey greets the aeon. Pauses, looks to Yuna. "Does having him out truly not draw on you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Aten’s special. He can summon himself, doesn’t wear on me at all.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers shyly at that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's really cool," Anri grins. "So, Yuna. Tell me about yourself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“O-oh. Me? I’m...well, I’m a summoner. And a white mage. I was born in Bevelle, but when I was ten, Kimahri, the ronso, he brought me to Besaid. I lived there until I found that I had the talent.”

Yuna looks at Anri, curious. “When did you find out you had the talent?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh. I was twelve. We were living near Macalania at the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Oh! So that’s how you had Shiva first,” Yuna says, nodding. “Did you get very far in your pilgrimage?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really. It was...a difficult time. And- I can't say I understood what the Pilgrimmage was about. I was twelve. What twelve year old truly understands sacrifice?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“That’s true. Most High Summoners are adults.” Yuna looks oddly pensive at that. “I found out a few months ago. I started mine straight away.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I mean. I can respect wanting to give people the Calm, but-" Anri sighs. "There's other summoners. Older ones. Who have actually had a chance to think about their sacrifice." Pause, and then, much quieter, and not really talking about Yuna at all. "Who aren't being pushed into it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Someone tried to push you into yours?” Yuna gasps, horrified. “Taking the pilgrimage is a sacred task that is entirely the summoner’s decision!”

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri laughs bitterly. "That isn't how our parents saw it."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m very glad you had Hasira then.” Yuna looks offended that anyone would force Yevon on the summoner. “Living so close to Macalania, they would’ve been close with the Guado,” she says, somewhat bitterly.

It’s the Guado under Seymour’s control she hates. The ones who meant Home’s destruction, who utilised sinspawn as war weapons.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Hasira made sure I was okay."

Pauses. "The Guado feel like they've changed a lot since Master Jyscal's death..."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’d never met them before. I didn’t get to meet any Maesters before my father died. If I had to guess, I would say this has been the way for some time.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're probably not wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- They- they didn't want Yevon. Not really."

Permalink Mark Unread

“What do you mean, Aten?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't- they. Don't really agree with it? It's-hard. To explain. I don't- m'not good at words."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Could you send it through the bond?”

Permalink Mark Unread

Uncertainty, concern about doing that. (But she'd ask him to.)

He wobbles for a moment before sending her his memories of observing the Guado.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna closes her eyes for a moment, taking it in.

“I see what you mean, Aten. They didn’t like Bevelle meddling in their idea of the afterlife.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"To be fair to them. They'd been doing okay without Yevon and Bevelle."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yevon was founded on a lie, but it has been the binding force for the people of Spira for nearly a thousand years. I wonder what Seymour promised for them to work together.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Power, power and more power?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles weakly, but cannot think lightly on that idea. The Guado were given enough power to destroy the Al Bhed. What would happen were they given any more?

Permalink Mark Unread

"-yeah. Too soon for jokes isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m sorry, it’s been a trying few days. Weeks. I don’t mean to be rude.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. It's- it's okay. I sometimes try- too soon. To cover things with laughter. Losing Home- It's easier to try not to think."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I wanted my journey to be full of laughter. But...but now, laughing hurts.”

Impulsively, she takes Anri’s hand. “You have lost more than I can comprehend. I’m so sorry. If you want me to tell a joke, I know a terrible one about chocobos?”

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri squeezes her hand. "It's okay," ey assures her. "Although a terrible joke about chocobo sounds right up my alley."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tells it. It is terrible.

It elicts a giggle from the teller, however.

Permalink Mark Unread

It gets a giggle from Anri as well, who leans over slightly so their shoulders brush as they walk. "That's awful," ey says. "I love it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna leans into the touch. “I’m afraid all Wakka ever taught me was terrible jokes. Sir Auron probably knows something more sophisticated.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"No offence to Sir Auron, but I think I prefer Wakka's way. Sophisticated humour is far too full of itself."

Permalink Mark Unread

“If you’d grown up on Besaid, you would have definitely got on with Wakka. Er...well. Apart from his...dislike of the Al Bhed. Not so much anymore, he learnt about Yevon’s deceit.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“...maybe too late.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I grew up on Besaid, I don't think I would've been Al Bhed." Beat. "And besides. Like Hasira says. We don't know they're dead until we've seen bodies."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I don’t know how you’re so positive. You...”

remind me of Rikku.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I dunno. I just don't see any point in catastrophising. Things suck enough without us thinking they're worse. And besides that. I'm pretty sure Ira would fight all of Yevon to bring Rikku back."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't blame her. Sometimes I feel the same. I only...just met her, and I wanted to know her better."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri smiles. "You will," ey declares. "We can figure out a way to stop Sin without you dying. If anyone can it's us, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't care about me dying, I care about the ones I love dying to keep me alive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. But we care about you dying. Because we care about you. It goes both ways"

Permalink Mark Unread

"One person dying for all others seems a fair trade to me. It's worth it, just to have peace for a few years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. So. We can't stop you from doing his. So. Maybe we think our lives to protect you so you can bring the Calm is worth it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I...think you're using reverse psychology," Yuna says with a wry grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guilty!" Anri trills happily. "Is it working?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No!" Yuna says, screwing up her face, then ruining that with a grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. We're gonna be on the road for a while."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Plenty of time to keep trying," Yuna agrees, smiling softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Later, Auron calls them to a stop. "We rest now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri immediately banks up a fire and starts cooking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers, wanting to help somehow, but not sure how.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri just watches, because they seem to have things pretty well organised.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna sees Anri and Aten's want to help, and giggles. Then she takes a leaf out of Tidus' book, and whistles to get their attention.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then summons Valefor. "Come on, you two. Flying then fire training. We could use some cheering up!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu laughs approvingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri bounces over. "Ooh! Yes please!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten spirals upwards, and the hesitates, waiting for Valefor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna leaps onto Valefor, and holds out her hand to Anri. "You must fly aeon-style, at least once."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri takes Yuna's hand and springs up behind her. "Delighted to!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, hold on!"

Yuna sends Valefor a nudge through the bond, and she takes off, gliding through the air.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri laughs delightedly and wraps eir arms around Yuna's waist.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten spirals upwards again, twisting around Valefor.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor crows happily at Aten, gliding around him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yua squeals delightedly, hugging Anri right back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten lets out a low whoop, cautious, but somehow... wanting to show his own joy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna whoops too!

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor keens loudly, clearly joyous too!

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri leans back slightly and adds eir voice the the call.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just think, if you go to Besaid, you could have a Valefor too!" Yuna calls excitedly to Anri.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see," Anri calls back, laughing. "Remember I'm not technically allowed in temples any more!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yevon schmevon!" Yuna calls in a delirium of joy.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe," Anri agrees. "Maybe when all this is over, you can show me your home." (Ey's not giving up that easily.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course! I'll take you and Aten, oh, you'd love the lagoon! It's so clear it's like glass, and the reef-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The reef."

Something seems to leave Yuna in a gust.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor keens sympathetically.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri hugs Yuna tighter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten moves closer, pulsing warmth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna grips one hand onto Anri, the other onto Valefor. She pretends the tears are from the quick glide of her aeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri just hugs her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor swoops low to the ground, stopping lightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna jumps off, using her sleeves to scrub quickly over her eyes.

“All right, we’ll summon Ifrit too. I want to see how long I can keep them both out.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit springs forth on her command.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor keens worriedly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers worriedly as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Be careful," Anri warns as ey slides off Valefor's back, giving the aeon a quick pat.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Of course,” She reassures both Anri and Aten. Her hand shakes a little, but she seems okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit flickers fire over to Aten, greeting him happily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers happily at Ifrit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit breathes fire over Aten, the flames warm and comforting, and quite strong.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor too, seems quite strong.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri grins. But ey's keeping an eye on Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten basks, his own flames reaching around Ifrit in turn.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna seems okay, though the shaking in her hands is still there.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yuna!” Kimahri, usually so composed, sounds terribly worried.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yuna, that’s terribly exhausting.” Lulu wraps an arm around Yuna, frowning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Valefor nuzzles Ifrit, letting off a small fire spell.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit purrs.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m okay,” says Yuna, wonder in her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers uncertainly, flinching away from Kimahri and Lulu.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good thing to practice. Not many summoners can summon more than one aeon at once."

Permalink Mark Unread

“And it’s so beautiful,” Yuna says on a breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu can feel the tremours in Yuna’s arms now. “Maybe that’s enough for tonight.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m okay.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri growls, like he’s disagreeing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should- listen- I-" More uncertain flickering.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Baby steps," Anri says. "Build your stamina."

Permalink Mark Unread

“You-you’re right.” Yuna takes in a deep breath, and her aeons whirl away into nothingness.

She wants to drop to her knees, she’s so tired.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri steps forward to hug her, subtly providing support. "Food?" ey asks. As good an excuse to sit as any.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna gratefully accepts the hug, leaning into Anri as if they’ve been doing it her whole life.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. At least ey can give Yuna this. (Ey knows the exhaustion of keeping one aeon out. Ey doesn't know this. But ey can imagine.)

Permalink Mark Unread

“Food sounds good,” Yuna mumbles into Anri’s shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri has concocted some sort of stew, and serves it with bread.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri gives him a grateful smile and nod as ey guides emself and Yuna to sitting to eat, staying with eir shoulder pressed against Yuna's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna makes her way through her meal, though somewhat sleepily. She feels drained, and like all of her limbs have locked up. There's something clogging up inside of her, and parts of today have let it out in little bits, but she's hurting.

But she can't say that. Her journey will not be sad.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri watches Yuna carefully. Leans in closer when they're both done eating. "You can let it out with me," ey whispers. "Don't bottle it up. Your journey can still be happy, even if you need a moment to not be."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna leans in closer to Anri. "What you said, before? About how you'd feel once I was gone? I haven't heard that since Lulu and Wakka first tried to stop me becoming a summoner. I hadn't thought about it. And then I thought about my father. My mother died, and then he died. I never even got a proper goodbye. I was seven, I wouldn't understand."

She hugs her knees. "And yet, I still want to finish this. Have...have I become so heartless?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri shakes eir head. "No. Your problem is your heart is too big. You care about everyone in Spira, to the point you want to give your life for them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You know that about me already?" Yuna asks, voice filled with wonder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's really not that hard to see, Yunie," ey says seriously, but with a soft smile. "Heck. You immediately wanted to get to know Hasira. You immediately decided we were family. And you don't want us to hurt. You want us happy, even when we all know how this is supposed to end."

Permalink Mark Unread

The nickname makes Yuna's eyes widen, but it's what Anri says afterwards that really opens up something in Yuna's heart. She stares dumbfounded at her cousin, and then tears start to fall again. She throws her arms around em, holding em tight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ey wraps around her in turn, humming quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers warmly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu gathers up both the girls in her arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri rests one hand on Yuna's back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna reaches out one hand-

Permalink Mark Unread

-and Auron takes it, stroking the back of it with his thumb.

How he cares for this girl, who should've had a father who was here and not a hero.

Permalink Mark Unread

(As if Anri needed any more proof Yuna had a good heart. People without didn't inspire this kind of love and loyalty.)

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment, Yuna pulls away, smiling at her guardians, her family.

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, that's what we're here for!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna wipes away her tears, and then covers her mouth as she yawns.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Probably bedtime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, everyone. I'm sorry to have worried you all so much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna, that's what we're here for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Our privilege," Anri declares.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles at them all.

She then excuses herself to make herself comfortable on the ground, to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri settles down nearby.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu also settles close, one hand on Yuna.

“Has she told you? What she lost?” Lulu asks Anri.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri shakes eir head. "I can almost certainly say the answer is 'too much'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Before all this began. 10 years ago. She lost her mother to Sin. And then her father became High Summoner." Lulu doesn't have to explain what that means.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri curses quietly in Al Bhed. "I- yeah. Too much. And she still wants to save the world that took all that from her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She believes that she owes the world her life, that she was not meant to have one. Wakka and I, we fought so hard for her to have a good childhood, but then the priests discovered her talent. She never got to enjoy the best part of being young." Lulu stroke's Yuna's hair sadly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What person with the talent does?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had a marvellous childhood, and my teenage years were free. All because I was not a summoner. So for Yuna, I gave up my life. I have been a guardian for many years, but Yuna will be my first success. And my worst failing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're really giving up on Yuna that easily? We've got time. There's got to be another way to defeat Sin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will never give up on her. But her will is so strong. Maybe that was my failing, I was too encouraging of a big sister." Lulu laughs a little, though it seems sad.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She isn't dead yet, there's time to find another way." Anri sighs looks down. "But that's what big sisters are for, encouraging us. And supporting us when we make dumb decisions. And protecting us. From everything. You're doing that well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I get the sense that was also about Hasira."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, I guess it is. Figuring out there's basically nothing your older sister won't do for you when you're twelve is...well, it sure is a thing..." (There is, briefly, a darkness to em.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu doesn’t need to press Anri for an answer to that darkness. She understands.

She’d kill for Yuna too. She has.

“It’s late. You should sleep.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"You and me both," Anri points out.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You’ve got me there.”

Lulu settles beside Yuna and closed her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Anri settles down as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the camp settles down too, and the night passes without incident.

Kimahri is first to wake in the morning, and is noticeably stiff, as if something is coming and only he can hear it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten picks up on Kimhari's response and lights up a ring around their campsite.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Not like that, Aten. We are close to Gagazet. Kimahri home,” he tries to soothe the fire.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers uncertainly, and-

Permalink Mark Unread

-coalesces back into a ball. "I- s-sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Need no apology. Good that Aten is careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is quiet for a moment. "O-Okay," he agrees quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna wakes next, greeting Kimahri as she walks past to sit near Aten. "Good morning. Anything happen?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten shakes his head. "S'been quiet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quiet is good," Yuna agrees. If he wasn't incorporeal, Yuna would've lent on his shoulder. Instead she sends warm happy feelings to him, and a thank you for last night.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers shyly, and the features of his avatar seem to quirk into a smile, and he sends back warmth, and you're welcome.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would you like to see what he looked like? And Rikku and Wakka?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He's quiet for a moment, and then nods. "I-please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

The first image carries the name 'Rikku', and she's yelling at someone fiercely, blonde braids shaking about.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next is 'Wakka', and he is throwing a blitzball at a much younger Yuna, cheering when she catches it.

Permalink Mark Unread

The last is 'Tidus', and the word carries so much heartache.

The blond haired, brown skinned boy laughs, and then gives Yuna a look that seems so in love, and happy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten watches them quietly. "They cared for you. Very much."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never even got to say goodbye," Yuna says, though she doesn't seem close to tears. She sounds regretful, but a little more centred.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri joins them at that point, pressing eir shoulder against Yuna's again. "Hasira says that 'goodbye' just makes things harder. 'Goodbye' is a sad memory."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna nods, smiling, but subconsciously sends a memory through the bond to Aten-

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna, promise me you won't go. Promise me!"

"Tidus I-"

"You are not going to die for nothing I won't...I..."

"...Tidus? TIDUS!"

Then, a swirl of pyreflies, slowly twisting away. There's the soft sound of a whistle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten sends warmth and comfort back to her, the only thing he can really think to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna leads into Anri. "I think sometimes you need a moment to at least tell them something you never got to say. Otherwise those words can haunt you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri wraps eir arm around Yuna's shoulders. "I suppose that's true," ey agrees quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, as well, for last night. I think I needed that more than I thought. It's been a long couple of weeks," Yuna says apologetically.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey, I'm glad to help," Anri assures her. "I know what holding everything inside looks like, feels like. Sometimes we just need to...let it all out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I kept thinking I had to keep smiling, but it...it started to feel heavy. I don't want happiness to feel that way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It shouldn't. And you don't have to. You shouldn't pretend you're happy when you're not. I don't think any of us want that. Let us be there for you when you can't be happy." Pauses , shrugs a little. "That really, is true happiness: Knowing that we did everything we could for you. Even if it wasn't always smiles."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna sits still, a little stunned by Anri's words. And then, a genuine smile breaks out across her lips, and she hugs Anri closely. "Thank you. I feel like I've been waiting for someone to say that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri interrupts to hand the girls food.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron is awake too, staring stonily at the path that will lead them over the mountain.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you," Anri says with a nod to Kimahri, and goes about eating, although ey eyes Auron. "What's his deal?" ey asks Yuna quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He was my father's guardian. He saw him become High Summoner, I guess he's just trying to make sure I get to be the same."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri hums thoughtfully, and turns most of eir attention back to eir breakfast.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once everyone's finished, Auron rounds them up and instructs Kimahri to lead the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri does, but there is a set to his shoulders that isn't usually there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna's teeth worry along her lip to see that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri walks beside Yuna again, and silently takes her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten floats along just over Yuna's head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's not usually like this," Yuna whispers to Anri and Aten.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten's focus sharpens, as he starts to pay more attention to their surroundings than he already is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri squeezes Yuna's hand gently. "This is where the Ronso come from isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. And they're very devout. With everything that happened in Bevelle, I can't imagine that they'd be happy to see me." Yuna sounds sad about that. "But this is Kimahri's home! He looks frightened to return!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-sometimes home isn't home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He never talked about it. I didn't think it might be...that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He doesn't particularly seem like one to talk much at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

A small, fond smile curls Yuna’s lips. “That’s just Kimahri. He doesn’t like talking when action is better. I can remember when he took me from Bevelle to Besaid. He didn’t talk once, but I was never afraid.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can imagine not," Anri agrees. "What would you have to fear with Kimhari there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“Exactly,” Yuna says with a fond nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri squeezes her hand. "We'll be fine," ey assures. "You've got good people looking after you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna tucks her head into Anri's neck briefly, trying to convey all the things she wants em to know, even though they've only known each other a day.

Permalink Mark Unread

The passes with a few fights, all Spiran fauna, no sinspawn. Mount Gagazet looms ever closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri proves emself quite capable in a fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten hovers closer down to Anri and Yuna, trying to give them some warmth.

Permalink Mark Unread

Two Ronso stand on either side of the path leading up into the mountain. They growl as the group gets closer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri's frown gets deeper.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri shifts slightly closer to Yuna, squeezing her hand gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Summoner Yuna. You are not permitted here," one of the ronso call.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am still on my pilgrimage! I must continue!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sacred Mount Gagazet is forbidden to you!" A third ronso appears.

Maester Kelk Ronso.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers, almost angrily.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maester, if you'll just let me explain-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You killed Maester Seymour! And Maester Kinoc! You will not pass!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri heaves a breath, then steps forward.

"Kelk care about Yevon. Why not stop Mika and Seymour returning? Why follow Yevon rules when Maester's themselves do not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The Maester seems to falter.

"If we do not, then we can never atone, and we will have Sin forever."

Permalink Mark Unread

That feels...like a lie, feels wrong, but he can't-

Permalink Mark Unread

"Big guy has a point about the Maesters. If they don't follow Yevon, how can anyone else atone? "

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am going to defeat Sin, with or without Yevon's approval. And I am the one who tried to send Maester Seymour!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is true that things within Yevon are turbulent. But that does not mean the excommunicated can do as they please!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna can still summon. Seems excommunication isn't all its cracked up to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

The ronso Maester sighs. He seems weary.

"Things in Spira are not as they seem."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please, sir. Let us pass!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has any other summoner tried to pass? Seems to me like Yuna might be the best hope for a Calm." (Ey doesn't like it, but-)

Permalink Mark Unread

Kelk sighs once more. "You may pass. The temple is open to you. May Yevon forgive me."

He goes back the way he came, looking like something is weighing him down.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri goes to pass, but is stopped.

"No measly runt can pass," one says.

"Howl alone!" The other says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, no.

Aten flashes to Kimahri's side, a howl echoing around them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aten, no. Kimahri must." Kimahri settles into a fighting stance.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ronso do the same, and then leap forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri dodges both, and then a fight begins.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten draws back a little reluctantly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri and the ronso fight ferociously, but Kimahri never seems to be losing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna's hands cup her chin, and she watches the fight with bated breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's got this," Anri whispers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna nods, but her eyes are still frantic with worry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri wraps an arm around Yuna, squeezes her shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri uses the spells he's learned from studying fiends, and soon has the two ronso on the ground, panting for breath.

"No...more...Kimahri...strong," one pants.

"Learned skills well," the other says.

Kimahri says nothing, and stalks past them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna hurries after him, to place a hand on his arm.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimhari smiles at Yuna, and places a much larger clawed hand over hers.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers after him as well, intent on making sure he's okay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kimahri okay. We go to temple now."

He leads the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

The temple doesn't look much like one from the outside, merely a door carved out of the rock around it, with red liquid pulsing around the design.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers uncertainly...

Permalink Mark Unread

"-that's not creepy at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Last temple to pray at,” Kimahri says gravely.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Last stop before Zanarkand,” Yuna adds. Her hands shake as she places her hand on the temple door.

Permalink Mark Unread

It opens with a grinding noise, that sounds a little like a scream.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-if nothing else, it at least recognises you as a summoner."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Which means that being excommunicated means nothing, I guess,” Yuna says. She sounds very sad about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

“The Maesters flout their own rules. Their word is worth less than nothing.” Lulu rests a hand on Yuna’s shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Come. There’s no point in lingering here.”

Auron walks inside.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You got this," Anri squeezes Yuna's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which is approximately what Aten is sending at Yuna over their bond.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna follows after Auron, into the wide empty space inside the rocks. She can’t see where to get to the Cloister of Trials. It seems...cold in here.

“Where do we go?” Yuna asks Auron.

Permalink Mark Unread

“If I remember correctly, you place your hand on that wall,” Auron says, pointing to an oddly discoloured bit of wall.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna timidly does so, placing her hand away from the suspicious looking patches.

Then something slashes through her palm. “Ah!” She shouts, jumping back from the wall. There’s now a hand shaped blood splatter where her hand was.

“Sir Auron!” Yuna says in shock.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’m sorry. She only opens her door for a sacrifice.”

True to his words, the door rumbles open.

Permalink Mark Unread

-this is familiar again. Someone was angry? On his behalf? Maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fayth is installed in the wall, with more of that red, pulsing liquid stretching out around it, like veins.

The woman in the fayth has her eyes open.

Permalink Mark Unread

“She’s beautiful,” Yuna says, admiring the fayth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...she is," Anri agrees quietly. "Is it just me or...is she angry?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“They make them smart these days, huh?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Vilg oui duu."

Permalink Mark Unread

“You’re awake too? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, the dream of the fayth did end, but...are you okay?”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Oh, yes. I love being stuck to a wall for all eternity, ready to give out parts of myself to arrogant pricks who think I’ll make them more powerful. Utter bullshit.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna is shocked at how the fayth speaks, and is silent, opening her mouth and closing it as she tries to find words.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Please, in your own time. I only have the rest of eternity.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten drifts closer. "I- know you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“You do, little wisp. As much as she’d like to erase my memory, I’m too strong for her. You remember me? Remember how I cared for you when she went too far?”

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes? It's-hazy. Hard. But- some. Impressions. Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I see you’ve learnt to summon yourself. Clever little thing, you always were.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers shyly. "I- it. Helped. Keep me safe. And- away. From Her."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Ooooh, I bet the bitch doesn’t like that.” The fayth laughs, deep and throaty. “Hope you’re not tiring out that summoner of yours too quickly.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“He doesn’t tire me out at all, actually,” Yuna says, eyeing the fayth with some trepidation.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Good. Because I’m definitely going to.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“You’re awfully proud for a fayth.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“And you’re awfully antagonising for someone who likes being alive.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"And isn't 'I'm coming with you' the answer we wanted anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, listen to the smart one. Ey's got a good head on eir shoulders."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will come with us? On my pilgrimage?"

Permalink Mark Unread

The fayth nods. "There's something about you. I know you'll be the one to upend her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm still holding out for a non-summoner-suicide option."

Permalink Mark Unread

The fayth looks at Anri, but says nothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna places one hand on the glass covering the fayth, and opens her heart.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a sounds like a scream as the fayth joins with Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna takes a deep breath, feeling sweat pool along her brow. "Thank you, Natassa."

Permalink Mark Unread

The fayth nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri reaches for Yuna's hand again, squeezing it gently.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna squeezes back, still a little unnerved.

Permalink Mark Unread

The fayth settles back, and closes her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're done here," Auron says, leading the way out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri guides Yuna out, occasionally glancing back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten continues to stay close.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna’s so tired all of a sudden that she’s shaking. She knows it’s from the joining, but she can’t help but remember the fayth - Natassa - saying that she would tire her out. The thought worries her some.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yuna strong,” Kimahri says, laying one hand on Yuna’s shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I hope so,” Yuna says, smiling at the ronso.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once they’re back outside, they’re greeted by ronso, everywhere. A few even block the path.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten doesn't quite flare up around them, choosing to settle into his more human form, looking around, pausing to see if Kimahri thinks this is a threat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri looks concerned, but hasn’t settled into a battle ready stance.

Permalink Mark Unread

The two ronso that Kimahri fought come to the head of the group.

And then they start to sing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri closes eir eyes and bows eir heads as ey listens.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna presses a hand to her heart, and tries not to cry. “It’s so beautiful,” she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Even Auron has stopped to listen, an inscrutable look on his face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is," Anri agrees. "It still speaks to me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're still a summoner, just not one bound to Yevon. You're free," Yuna says with a little nudge.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu lowers her head, expression a little lost.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lulu..?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm all right. Just...thinking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not bound to Yevon either," Anri points out quietly to Yuna. Then, to Lulu: "Gil for your thoughts?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just...remembering the lost, and wishing they were here, so close to our goal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wakka and Chappu would both be so proud of you," Yuna says, hugging her.

Permalink Mark Unread

The ronso's song draws to an end, and they bow to Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna bows back.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment of thought, Anri bows as well. It might not be aimed at em, but-

Permalink Mark Unread

“We go.” Auron leads the way up back to the path.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he's followed, Anri continuing to stick close to Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

The walk up the mountain continues until the sun starts to dip, and Auron calls for camp to made.

Yuna drops against the cliff wall, hugging her knees. “It’s so cold up here,” she says, calling a little flame to her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri arranges a rock circle, and Lulu casts a fire spell inside it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten forms a ring around them, a low burning fire trying to provide them with a bit more warmth.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Thank you, Aten,” Yuna smiles at the ring of fire fondly.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers, pleased. "You're welcome."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Here," Anri pulls a blanket out of eir bag and wraps it around Yuna and eirself. "Me and Hasira used to curl up like this before Cid found us."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna cuddles into Anri. “I’m glad you two had each other, despite everything. And I’m even gladder Cid found you.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'm glad- I'm glad you didn't have to go through anything like that. Not having your parents must've been...tough. But. You had people who cared a great deal for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

“My friends have always been like my family. And I suppose I still had Cid, out there.”

Its clear that she considers Anri part of that family already.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri cuddles closer. "Family isn't always about blood," ey agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I’ve found lately that blood doesn’t matter much. It’s connection that brings us together.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron nods to himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten pulses warmly around them, the literal connection he has to Yuna filled with his...wonder at being included in this.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course you're included, Aten. You're as much my family as anyone else."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably more so in some ways. The connection to an aeon..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles softly. “We’re a part of each other,” she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a strange thought, a strange feeling, but yes, they are.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles, and then settles down to sleep, exhausted from accepting a new aeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You should sleep too.” Auron directs his look at Anri.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ey looks over to him. "You have someone to keep watch?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't sleep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Funny that," Anri comments, but lies down and wraps a blanket around emself.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not funny enough," Auron comments, but lets her be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then ey will sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Aten continues to burn around them.

Permalink Mark Unread

The next morning, Auron wakes them early. "Something's wrong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ser Auron?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is flickering unsurely as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri rolls to eir feet, reaching for eir weapons.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can hear screaming. Something is attacking the Ronso village."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We have to help them!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna, we have to keep you safe first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not more important than anyone else!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri has an argument about that, but. "She's stubborn. We're not going to win this fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Those Ronso are willing to lay down their lives so you can finish your pilgrimage. Would you take that from them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I..." Yuna looks helplessly down into the valley.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri steps forward and squeezes her shoulder. "They're good fighters. Strong."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, but..." She looks over at Kimahri.

Permalink Mark Unread

"They strong. Yuna should not doubt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's get moving."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers closer to Yuna. Trying to be reassuring.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri takes her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna takes strength from her friends. "Then let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron leads the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, the others will be following after him, Anri quietly humming an Al Bhed tune.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna sticks close to Anri, humming along with her once she knows enough of the song, and sometimes looks over her shoulder into the valley.

Permalink Mark Unread

After a couple of times of that, Anri starts asking about Besaid Island.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna seems happy to answer, a smile on her lips, but there is still sadness in her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Stop.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Kimahri?”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Something ahead.”

He holds an arm out, protectively in front of Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri stops as well, shifting slightly ahead of Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers in front of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We must keep moving."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri nods. "Careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stay close, Yuna." Lulu summons fire spells to her hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a high, manic laugh from up ahead.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is gonna be fun," Anri mutters sourly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten burns brighter, fiercer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once they round the bend, Seymour is before them, a manic look to him that matches the laugh. "Lady Yuna! We meet once more!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna gasps, frightened, but anger clouds that quickly and she readies her staff, preparing to send him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, no hello for your husband?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri snarls angrily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flares up.

Permalink Mark Unread

-How would Seymour like an arrow to his head?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seymour plucks the arrow from the air, and laughs at it. "You've acquired such strange new friends!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Raeli?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli appears beside them. "When I say," she instructs, "move. Masquerade is going to live up to eir name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." Yuna nods, but readies a summon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Natassa clamours to the front, ready to fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten burns brighter and higher, a line between Seymour and the party.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade appears, the air around em and the party shimmering and starting to change, to take form.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna gasps, but stays still, as commanded.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu doesn't recognise the magic, but would allow anything to make sure Seymour dies here.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you hear them? Oh, they were valiant foes, but each one fell to me. Trying to stop me getting to you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Move," Raeli hisses out, but her voice carries.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's copies, of all of them, multiple copies, moving around the area.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna lets loose her summon.

Permalink Mark Unread

Natassa's scream sounds triumphant, and she lashes out towards Seymour.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri's roar is pained, and he charges.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri summons Shiva while they're at it, dives to the side, rolling to eir feet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dead! Because they defended you! How could you be so selfish, Yuna? All you had to do was come with me!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never! I will never go with you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She is her own person! And you are a monster!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Flames lash out at Seymour.

Permalink Mark Unread

"To destroy...to save Spira, I will become Sin!"

He hisses at the flames, a too-wide grin on his face.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't even make sense," Masquerade hisses, the illusions around them moving as though to attack.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seymour doesn’t seem to care what he throws a spell at, a small creature absorbing anything thrown at him.

His eyes are wild, manic, and don’t leave Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Natassa changes tactic, working on destroying the thing absorbing spells.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shiva joins her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten as well, burning fierce and bright.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seymour's face screws up with rage as his pet is destroyed. He warps, changes, into something dreadful.

"Now you will ALL PAY!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stay strong! This is not where our story ends!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're the one who will pay!" Masquerade roars and surges forward. The illusions move forward with them, swarming over Seymour.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's already dead right?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna! The Sending!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right!"

Yuna starts to dance.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No! NO!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli and Masquerade stand firm between Yuna and Seymour, arrows and magic lancing out from them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten forms a wall as well. They need to keep Yuna safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lady Yuna, please. You know I only want the best for Spira."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No! You want to hurt, and destroy, and I will never help you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you wanted what was best, you would have stayed dead!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Seymour seems to falter, as pyreflies ripple out from him.

He then glares, furiously, at Yuna, and disappears.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is it...is it over?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-He appears to be gone."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna takes a few shuddering breaths, then falls to her knees, sobbing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna," Lulu says, falling next to her to gather her in her arms.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri is with them immediately. "We've got you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten floats closer, an exhausted ball, but still trying to be reassuring.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kimahri, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri lowers himself in front of Yuna. He's crying too. "It not Yuna's fault."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't take the weight of other people's decisions on you. Seymour was evil."

Permalink Mark Unread

She throws her arms around Kimahri, hugging him. "I'm sorry!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not Yuna's fault. Not her fault."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu joins the hug, stroking Yuna's hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri manages to squeeze in as well, humming quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's some time before Yuna calms herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri tips her face up gently. "Yuna is good. Ronso lives worth Yuna's."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He'll be gone for this, I swear it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm sorry, but we need to move."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna wipes her face, a little ineffectually, but nods. "Thank you, Raeli, for coming to our rescue. You too, Masquerade."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You were certainly timely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I told you we had promises to keep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not to us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lulu!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not exactly," Raeli agrees placidly. "And yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Please! There's no need for this! They helped us, didn't they?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu looks ready to argue, but softens at Yuna's look. "You're right. I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A shame. I was spoiling for another fight."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna calls her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Natassa disappears with a disappointed noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You haven't changed at all, Rae."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course not!" Raeli declares with a bright grin. "I assume Hasira's alright as well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

“She nearly killed us with a machina.”

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli laughs. "Sounds like Hasira. She yell at you for interrupting her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, even though we only meant to keep Yuna alive."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hasira's volatile."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's one word for her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Volatile doesn't seem to cover it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's gone to find Rikku and Wakka for us. Whether they're alive or..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No-one better to have in your corner. In a fight of Hasira versus Sin, I'd probably still put my money on Hasira."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like the woman we encountered," Yuna says with a watery grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade shifts impatiently.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We really do need to move."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Zanarkand is so close."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We could get there before sunset, if we hurry."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Onwards then," Raeli agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed." Auron leads the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna, still looking back, hurries to walk behind him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri continues to stay close to Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli and Masquerade drop to walk at the back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is good to see you both." Kimahri walks beside Raeli and Masquerade.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli smiles up at him. "You're just saying that because we helped against Seymour."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kimahri only says what Kimahri means."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose you would at that. I appreciate the sentiment. I'm glad to find you all in...as good health as you can be. I am sorry about your people."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri shakes his head sadly. "Kimahri people will be avenged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, they will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"With all the wroth allowed us by our feeble forms."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's more comforting than you might think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, I know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did you find us? If you don't mind the question."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll admit that we've been tracking you on and off since we met you at Rin's."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Because of this promise you owe. Did you meet Yuna’s father somehow?”

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow. Masquerade is very expressive for having a mask over their face, the sardonic smirk is obvious. "My promise is far older than Braska."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu, while a little amazed she can tell what Masquerade’s expression is, is not by the half answer.

“As long as your intentions are to help keep Yuna safe, I suppose I don’t mind.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Except that you do," Raeli notes shrewdly.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I get the feeling you’re both into non-answers. I know when to stop prying. Out loud, at least.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. We can't deny that. Sometimes it's all you have."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu frowns at that, but says nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna looks back at them, teeth worrying her lip. She’s worried about Lulu, and Kimahri, but doesn’t know how to help.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli hands off her bow to Masquerade, and pulls out her violin instead, starting a jaunty jig as she walks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna smiles, and bobs to the music as she walks.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri falls back a little further, making sure the music doesn’t attract anything.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu joins up with Yuna, and takes her hand to spin her around, wanting to keep that smile on her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri grins and claps time with the tune.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flickers up and his flames move in time with the music.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Is this right?” Yuna murmurs to Lulu.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You wanted your journey to be full of laughter. A terrible thing has happened, but we all want to smile with you while we can.”

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, and smiles. “Okay.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cid always used to say that the best way to mourn someone was to celebrate their life."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I just...you’re right. I don’t want the spirits of the Ronso to be sad.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Ronso proud people. Will be proud of Yuna.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone will be," Anri agrees, and behind eir smile there's a sadness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna can almost hear the regret in Anri's voice, so she holds out her hand to em. "Dance with me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Ey takes the hand. "Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay!" She pulls Anri along, skipping and twirling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri goes happily, eir laughter ringing out in delight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron doesn't begrudge her this little happiness, especially since he knows what's coming next. He even laughs at the antics of the two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu joins in every so often to twirl Yuna around, laughing softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade speeds up a little, falling in beside Auron. "You know what comes next," they say quietly. It isn't a question.

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes an affirmative noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And when all is done. Will you go to your rest?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I'm right about Yuna, that will not be soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. To be young and not-yet-dead again. Such hope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You haven't found being essentially immortal enticing?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am what I am. My existence is, really, a minor thing. I have a promise to keep. After that...we'll see. Eternity can be very lonely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very true. And it is good to hear that you have no designs to stay. Wouldn't want you becoming a real fiend."

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade laughs quietly. "There is much that ties me to what little humanity I have ever been able to claim."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wonder if you'll reveal just what."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm an open book, you just need to know the language."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I like that. I may use it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"By all means. Be my guest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Has it been some time since you...left?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some, yes. I have seen Sin come and go many times. And I have mourned the summoners."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am sorry. Such things are difficult to carry. I have only seen one fall."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I suppose we must have faith that Lady Yuna will finally, truly, end this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She will. I knew her father, and I know her. Had her father had Yuna's courage, Sin would already be a distant memory."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's hope you're right." Masquerade looks back at those behind them. "For everyone's sakes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

The mountain pass suddenly clears and then-

Zanarkand. In its ruined glory.

Permalink Mark Unread

-oh. That's a response from Aten. This is horribly and terrifyingly familiar.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aten?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He flickers. "I- can feel her. I-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Feel who? Who is hurting you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu summons spells to fight whoever 'she' is.

Permalink Mark Unread

He can't-

He doesn't know how to-

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yunalesca," Masquerade snarls, low and venomous.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lady Yunalesca?

"What..? She...she's alive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna! Summon Aten back!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alive is not what she is. But evil is."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Aten! Would that help?” Yuna’s hands hover, wanting to hug the fireball but not sure that would help.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Yunalesca was the first person to defeat Sin, evil or not.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depending on your definition."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten shudders and shakes and-

"I don't- I don't know. She's- more there. Less here. I don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna summons Ifrit, who is quick to cuddle up next to Aten, softly breathing fire on him.

Permalink Mark Unread

“Should rest. Zanarkand can wait.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Agreed. Let’s get down off this pass.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a cave down there we can shelter in," Raeli points, and takes the lead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna follows, checking back every so often to look listlessly at Aten and Ifrit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu keeps pace with her, urging her on.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten curls tight in against Ifrit, trying to steady himself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri stays close to Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna takes one of Anri’s hands and one of Lulu’s. She imagines she’s drawing on their strength, boldening her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri squeezes her hand, trying to impart some strength.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade and Raeli make short work of building a fire, and a flint sparks against the tinder before anyone can think to use a fire spell. The cave is tucked away and well sheltered.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna remains close to Ifrit and Aten, watching over the aeon carefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron posts himself near the front of the cave, and is staring out across the wreckage of a once great city, the memories nearly too much to bear. This is where he died.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade settles near Auron, a silent attempt at support, at solidarity.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten seems a little better here in the cave, but he's still unsettled.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I lost my two closest friends here, to treachery. And then she killed me for daring to question her," Auron says quietly to Masquerade, once he's sure everyone else has settled.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My summoner never made it to Zanarkand. I came on my own, after my death, to see what was left. To see what Aten had told us of."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And was it everything you feared?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everything and worse. Aten has a way of understating his own pain."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As does Yuna. I'm glad they have each other."

Auron sighs, and shifts slightly. "Your oath was to protect him. Why weren't you at the spring?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do you know I wasn't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron nearly smiles at that. "You've been following us for some time then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seemed wise. Lady Yuna had convinced Aten to go with her, but I needed to be sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you know him? When he was alive?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. He's older than that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then why protect him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because no-one else ever did. And I promised Aten. And I promised- I promised my summoner that I would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I promised Braska I'd look after his daughter. And Jecht, his son."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sometimes promises are the only thing worth living for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And if we fail? What then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't intend to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The fayth woke up. I failed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Ah. Jecht was from the dream then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Jecht is Sin, but yes. His son was also from the dream."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite the thing. But the fayth weren't going to dream forever."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. But I wish they'd left enough magic to let Tidus live."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would have been a blessing for you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And for Spira, I can assure you. He may have been bold and loud, but his heart was good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Truly, there aren't enough good hearts left."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think Yuna's managed to collect the best ones left in Spira."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's an impression of a fatalistic smirk. "Like attracts like, I suppose." Masquerade looks back to Yuna. "And even I can feel how pure her heart is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's calming, isn't it? Her presence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Something like that certainly..."

Permalink Mark Unread

“She’s going to be the one to end the cycle. I know it.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can but hope."

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron nods.

He settles by the mouth of the cave, leans against the wall and closes his eyes, feigning sleep. More out of habit than actual necessity.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna is trying to pronounce Al Bhed properly, keeping herself awake and focused so Aten can have Ifrit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri makes it into a game, helping pronunciation where ey can.

Permalink Mark Unread

She occasionally looks over to Auron and Masque, wondering what they were talking about, but is easily brought back into playing the game.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli joins in as well, and seems to, at least a little, be trying to distract Yuna from Masquerade and Auron. (Perhaps she knows, somewhat, what they're discussing.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna seems to pick up new words quickly, though pronunciation is still a little tricky.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri teases her about it, not maliciously, but, on Raeli's prodding, reveals that ey hadn't picked Al Bhed up anywhere near as quickly as Hasira.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really? Wow. She seems so smart!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What Hasira is capable of when she sets her mind to it is insane."

Permalink Mark Unread

That makes Yuna want to believe Wakka and Rikku are alive, if only to see Hasira save them.

"Have you known them very long, Raeli?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not quite since Cid took them in. Three, four years?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Four and a half, Rae."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you were all in the Calm Lands, without knowing! A wonderful coincidence."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eh. Rae's always been a free spirit, and half the time no-one knows where she is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It sounds wonderful. I've always been in the public eye, even on Besaid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, but it's not without it's downsides. Sometimes you feel like you might vanish."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You still have so many people caring for you, though!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You aren't wrong. Al Bhed are...well. We're close by necessity. But it's easier to disappear in a crowd than with just two people. Ah, never mind me."

Permalink Mark Unread

“I know what you mean. Sometimes you never feel lonelier when surrounded by other people.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Quite."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten fickers a little. He's okay, really, Yuna should sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

She should, exhaustion wears heavy on her. But she's still so worried that without Ifrit Aten won't feel safe.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ifrit huffs a warm breath over Aten, and makes a disapproving sound at Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right, all right." She calls Ifrit back, and starts to settle down to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten curls up in the fire itself today.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri settles down next to Yuna, pressed along her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna makes a happy noise at that, and burrows back into em.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu lies on the other side of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli goes and joins Masquerade and Auron, lying down with her head on Masquerade's lap.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron opens one eye and smirks at the two, settling back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri tries to sleep, but the loss of his people weighs heavy on him. He drifts in and out, dreaming of screams.

Permalink Mark Unread

No-one really gets a peaceful night. (This close to Zanarkand, who could? Especially with everything that's happened over the last day.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron stirs everyone once the sunrise turns the world golden.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna shivers, but not from cold. So close to her final destination, she can feel the anticipation building in her, like a wave.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu wraps an arm around her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri stays close as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is still not entirely calm, but he looks a little better than he did.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll protect you, Aten. Promise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I- yes." (He doesn't sound too sure.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose there's no point in delaying any further."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go."

Auron leads the way.

Permalink Mark Unread

And he will be followed.

Permalink Mark Unread

The path cuts through the ruins, bodies of summoners and guardians lying on either side. Some rise to fight them, screaming their injustice, that they should die and others live.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna sends each one dutifully, biting her lip to stop tears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri helps where ey can - ey might have left eir pilgrimmage, but ey's still a summoner, still knows how to perform the sending.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna matches her steps to Anri's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu smiles sadly. They make a beautiful duo, but the purpose is still terrible. She wishes she could speak to Tidus one more time, tell him that he was right.

Beautiful and terrible.

Permalink Mark Unread

Be that as it may, it has to be done.

Permalink Mark Unread

A large structure is their goal, pyreflies dancing around it in dizzying waves.

Permalink Mark Unread

And inside, her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is somehow shaking, despite being a tiny ball of flames, clearly terrified.

Permalink Mark Unread

"My son, my son. Come home to me, at last."

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade steps forwards, between Yunalesca and Aten. "Come to end you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aten? Masque?"

Permalink Mark Unread

-no. Nonono.

Aten doesn't know how to stop this, doesn't know how to get her out of his head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's playing games again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ahhhhh, the fiend. Come to avenge Zveran? His body lies here somewhere, beaten by his aeon. Perhaps I could raise him for you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He wouldn't want that. He'd want you put down."

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli steps forward and rests a hand on the back of Masquerade's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He believed in Spira! In the spiral of death, as does my son. You truly think they'd believe in an end?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we can end you. I think we can make sure you don't harm anyone ever again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let the summoner decide. You know what she will choose, guardian. Will you let her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Masque! What's wrong?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let her choose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's your choice, Lady Yuna."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What has you and Aten so frightened?" Yuna stands firm, glaring at them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron also keeps a firm gaze on them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-The Final Aeon. I-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you want Lady Yuna to make the choice, you should probably give it to her."

(Masquerade couldn't.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't like seeing you both so frightened! It makes me scared. I don't want to be scared."

Yuna sounds fierce.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not scared, I'm angry." Pause. A glance back to Aten. "And wouldn't you be scared facing a mother who never acted how a mother should?"

Permalink Mark Unread

That drew Yuna short, and had her breath catching in her throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna, you're so close. What stops you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nu...nothing. I...nothing. I'm ready."

She pushes open the great doors.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron helps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade helps as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

The doors swing open-

-revealing a darkened fayth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Final Aeon! It's...no, no it can't be dead!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And this is where you find yourself a choice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where is the Final Aeon, if not here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This way." Auron steps onto a lift.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna follows him, her hands tightly gripped in Lulu and Anri's.

Permalink Mark Unread

The others follow close behind. Raeli backing up, scanning the space around them, wary, on edge.

Permalink Mark Unread

In the main room, there is a woman. Clad in mere silks and surrounded by pyreflies, she opens her arms. "Summoners, I welcome you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri squeezes Yuna's hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten can't seem to keep a coherent form.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lady Yunalesca?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, my child. You are so brave, so courageous, to make it to my home."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She isn't wrong," Masquerade says, low and intent. "But that was you, all you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your bravery, your faith, brought you to me. And now you can end Spira's suffering."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's all I want. I want to destroy Sin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you will, my dear. All it takes is one, last, cost."

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is trying so hard not to let his fear seep through the bond. This is Yuna's choice, no matter how much he wants her to runrunrun.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you have brought my son to me, thank you, thank you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your...son? Lady Yunalesca, we did not even know you lived!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I had to keep myself secret, let the summoners discover me. Lest Spira fall to ruin."

She pulls Aten to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

He flares up, trying to escape.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca counters his flares, drawing him ever nearer.

Permalink Mark Unread

"He doesn't want to!" Yuna yells, her hands reaching for the aeon.

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't know how to fight this, he never could-

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade dives forward, drawing their sword, and lashing out at Yunalesca.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron stops Masque. "It's her decision!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And my job is to protect Aten."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let Yuna decide. Please."

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade makes a discontent sound, and turns away.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are you hurting Aten? Why was that fayth dead?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My dear child, did you think the Final Aeon that easy to find? Sin would not let you gain power that easily. And as for Aten-

He is my dearest son, and I have been awaiting his return."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bitch. He's his own person, not some plaything."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca doesn't even bat an eye. "I'm curious to see which of your companions you will choose for your fayth."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna feels her blood go cold. "My...fayth?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca nods solemnly. "One of your guardians will make the ultimate sacrifice, and make the fayth so you may recieve the Final Aeon, and defeat Sin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade is practically vibrating.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten is a twisting mass of flame, still trying to escape.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only the love between you and your guardian can create an Aeon powerful enough to defeat Sin."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And then they will become Sin."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca turns a disapproving glare on Auron. "It must be done."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna can't breathe. The only thing keeping her present is the need to have Aten close-

She pulls.

Permalink Mark Unread

-And that makes it easier. His connection to Yuna so much more than his connection to Her.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a sense that Masquerade is giving a vicious, triumphant grin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca's face is fiercely angry, fury so obvious-

And then calm once more. "I see. You require payment for your actions. And I suppose it is difficult to lose one's aeon. A trade then, of equal value. You let Aten go, let him return to me, and in return-"

She waves an airy hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

-and pyreflies swirl, getting closer and closer until-

A boy, gasping for air, pulls himself up from the ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

-Fear. But also- resignation. (Of course Yuna's going to take Tidus, of course she is.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron turns white. "Masque, hold me back."

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade steps in front of him. "Who am I holding you back from? Because if it's Yunalesca you've chosen the wrong person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is my best friend's son. I would do anything to save him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tidus?" Yuna's voice is so small, so desperate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna!" Tidus calls, trying to walk, but his legs were so stiff, as if they were bolted to that spot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten seems... reduced somehow. "I- it's okay," he mumbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your man will be returned to you, just return my son to me," Yunalesca says, syrupy sweet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No! No, you can't trust her, Yu-"

Tidus breaks off, scrabbling at his throat for air.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stop! Stop hurting him!" Yuna sobs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"And people called me a trickster," Masquerade snarls. "You lie and lie and don't care who you hurt."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now, now, the summoner has to make the choice herself. Those are the rules," she says, tutting at Tidus.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tidus gasps for air, his eyes locked on Yuna with fear and love.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a moment, one moment, where she considers it, having Tidus back.

Permalink Mark Unread

But she refuses to give up who she is. No matter what.

"Tidus would never accept that trade. And either will I. Aten is a part of me, we are a part of each other. You'll never have him!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten's startled (no-one ever chose him). (Except- And there's that elusive half-memory again. Except someone.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade is, honestly, impressed. Yuna might just be the one who changes this moving forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tidus is proud, so proud of her-

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca loosens her hand.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna runs, trying to reach him, hold him one last time. His arms are open wide and then-

She falls, hitting the ground hard.

Tidus is gone, again.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Yunalesca is looking to hasten her demise, her casual cruelty is certainly helping her cause.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri immediately goes to Yuna, offering to help her back up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna takes Anri’s hand, shaking a little. There are tears on her cheeks but steel in her eyes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron seems smaller somehow, for just a moment, grief for the boy he watched over, for the son of his friend, nearly overwhelming.

He takes a battle ready stance, shaking off memories, and unsheathes his sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

“You mean to fight me, fiend? You’ll find me no easy target,” Yunalesca says, warningly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade, in turn, seems bigger. They laugh, a cackling court jester. "And you will find us no easy foe. There is hatred and betrayal and anger here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna wipes away tears, and unsheathes her staff. “This is my story. I’m going to end it the way I want!”

Permalink Mark Unread

“Then so be it.”

Yunalesca flies into the air, her hair turning into a mass of writhing dark energy. She lets fly spells, her face contorted with fury.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten flares up. He will not let her hurt these people, who've been so kind to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri casts a hurried Shell around emself and Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu sends back spells of her own, furious that Yunalesca tried to use Tidus against Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri casts spells he learnt from fiends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron dodges each spell, ready to swing at the creature.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna reaches down into herself, finding the power she needed, and summons all of her aeons.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri spares a moment, from sending Shells at the others, to summon Shiva.(Ey may only have one aeon, but they need the power.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli falls back slightly, firing arrow after arrow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade is close in beside Auron - enough space that they won't risk hitting each other, but barely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca raises summoners and guardians from the dead, directed them at Auron and Masque.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron's heart breaks, but he cuts down the undead, creating a path to Yunalesca.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna sends healing spells at her friends each time they get hit. No one will fall today.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca screams, a horrible contorted sound.

Permalink Mark Unread

Natassa's fingers are deep in Yunalesca's stomach.

"Writhe, bitch."

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade's response to the undead is impossible to discern as they keep moving forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fire surges around Yunalesca and Natassa, wrapping around Yunalesca.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca continues to scream, grabbing Natassa by her throat and throwing her away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Natassa gurgles, and then disappears in a whirl of pyreflies.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of Yuna's aeons take up the charge, not letting Natassa's sacrifice be for nothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

-She keeps killing anything good. And Aten won't let that happen to Yuna. He won't.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna's Shiva teams up with Anri's, to cast a mighty Diamond Dust.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca lets a barrage of dark energy.

Permalink Mark Unread

The wave hits Auron, but does nothing. He's already dead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna's cry of 'Sir Auron!' dies in her throat when she sees that, and her eyes widen when she realises why.

Permalink Mark Unread

Masquerade is cackling again. "You can't get rid of us that easily."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I WILL DESTROY EVERY PART OF YOU!" Yunalesca screams, snakes of dark matter reaching out to grab Masque and Auron.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu flings lightning spells to try and separate them, her face desperate.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No!" Yuna glows with a white light, and then a ray of pure energy beams from her hands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can try," Masquerade stands firm - even if Yuna's vehement reaction is a little startling.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yunalesca screams, and falls, letting Auron and Masque go.

She's looks smaller now, the dark energy no longer rippling around her. "You...you would destroy Spira?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. I would save it. From you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri steps closer to Yuna, rests a hand on her shoulder. "No more summoners need to die."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna. Send her."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna does, dancing with purpose.

Permalink Mark Unread

"No..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri matches steps with Yuna, perhaps this is Yuna's dance, but it isn't going to hurt.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You...you have doomed us all."

Yunalesca fades into pyreflies.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna drops to her knees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yuna!" Lulu rushes over to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri drops down next to her, wrapping eir arms around her. "It was the right thing," ey says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli moves forward as well, obviously not entirely sure what to do now.

Permalink Mark Unread

-Aten isn't sure what this isn't, isn't sure of this feeling-

(It feels like relief, that it's finally over, that she's finally gone.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"The beginning of the end."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna is quiet for some time, but then looks up at Auron. "My father...my father sacrificed Sir Jecht?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He didn't know. None of us did. Jecht knew he could never go back home. He 'wanted to do something right for once'."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So many lies," Masquerade muses, looping an arm around Raeli's shoulders. "Just because she was scared to die..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How does the Final Aeon become Sin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yu Yevon. The first Sin, possesses the aeon. We have to send him too."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna bunches her hands in her skirt, shaking a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lulu wraps her arms around her and holds her tight.

Permalink Mark Unread

"If anyone can do this, Yuna, it's you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah," Anri agrees. "Look at what you've accomplished already."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All these people, all these heroes...they didn't know. No one did. We brought Sin back every time...and we never knew."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri gives Yuna a squeeze. "Exactly. No-one knew. How else were we supposed to stop it if we didn't know?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna looks up at Auron. "But you knew."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you, Masque?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some. I've been piecing my memories back together. Death...is not kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Permalink Mark Unread

“It had to be your decision, Yuna. You had to choose this.”

Permalink Mark Unread

“But why? I don’t understand!”

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron walk over, and wraps his arms around Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna’s eyes widen in shock.

Permalink Mark Unread

“I promised Braska I would look after you. I wasn’t there for you when you needed me. I had to make sure I was now, no matter what you chose.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"It wasn't my place to say anything."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna nods, and tucks herself into Auron's embrace.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shouldn't linger here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No," Raeli agrees. "This place isn't healthy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-We should see if there's a way to contact Cid. He'll want to know Yuna's okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We shouldn't leave him waiting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No." With a last hug, Auron lets Yuna go.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hopefully Hasira will have contacted him and he'll have news on Wakka and Rikku as well!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She’s not entirely sure that she wants news.

But she is their leader, of a sort. So she stands up.

“Id like to leave here first, if you all don’t mind.”

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's," Raeli agrees, starting to pick her way back out of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron doesn’t move until Yuna does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna takes a bit of time, picking herself up, but eventually does. She grips Lulu and Anri’s hands, and follows Raeli out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri squeezes Yuna's hand, following beside her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Aten hesitates for half a moment. (She was still his mother...) Then he hurries after Yuna.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna threads a hand through Aten’s flames. “I’m sorry. But she was hurting you.”

Permalink Mark Unread

He pulses gentle warmth back to her. "I- I know. Just-" (It was hard, to separate everything She'd said, to remember Her words as the lies they were.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe she's happier now? Without the burden of Sin?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Yeah. Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna can tell nothing she'll say will comfort him. Instead she strokes along his flames once more, and then hurries to catch up.

Permalink Mark Unread

He hurries after her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to leave Zanarkand entirely?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose staying here would be easier for Cid. The temple is a landmark."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Over here," Masquerade says. "This building is... intact enough to shelter in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A sound plan."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna follows Masque in.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's nothing special, and time hasn't done it any favours, but it will provide them with shelter. Masquerade builds up a fire from what they can find.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kimahri helps.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna stands by the opening, looking back at the temple.

Permalink Mark Unread

Auron watches over her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri joins her, wrapping an arm around her waist.

Permalink Mark Unread

Raeli finds herself a perch up above the others, calls down quietly that she's got a good view, that she'll see anything that tries to approach.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yuna cuddles into Anri, sighing a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should get that call out of the way. Before Sin catches us unawares."

Permalink Mark Unread

“Sir Jecht,” Yuna says, mostly to herself.

She dutifully pulls out the call sphere.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anri gives her another gentle squeeze. "It'll be fine," ey whispers. "C'mon. Let's do this."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes a breath in, and then out.

She calls her Uncle.
