Edie was perusing the latest correspondence from her fork. She still should have been paying enough attention to realize that the door didn't go where it ought before it swung shut and she couldn't sense anyone else anymore, but she wasn't.
After opening and closing the door a couple times to make sure she hadn't just been abducted somehow, she looks around.
And they can continue doing blessing design, and socializing with the giant squid, and watching movies, and cuddling.
"Oh, I just thought of an Earth movie you should definitely see," she says at one point.
"It's called Doctor Doolittle and it's about a man who talks to animals."
It's a good movie. The good doctor strongly prefers animals to people, and encounters a variety of fantastic beasts like the pushmi-pullyu, a double-ended llama, and a giant sea snail and a moth that really shouldn't exist as that size of arthropod in an atmosphere without a lot more oxygen.
It's also slightly sexist, being set in Victorian England. The love interest has a song about all the violence she'd commit if she were male.
Well, the Elves didn't have that one figured out before they got to electricity either.
The violence song is actually kind of excellent aside from the sexism.
She giggles, and sings, and kisses him on the cheek and thinks fond thoughts about Elves and singing.
Elves are good at singing! Normal and magic Elves seem equally good at singing, accounting for the fact the magic ones have got a Macalaurë.
They drag the engineers out for breaks. It's three weeks in a single hour for him, once. A concert, a dance, some movie nights, some outdoor sports.
Wings make ground-based dancing less convenient, and aerial dances are mostly designed around both partners being able to fly, but they're both clever people and can surely improvise.
I'm not an entertainer, he grumbles after the engineers have shuffled off again. I miss my mother.
I wanted to dance with you to dance with you, dear, not just to entertain the others.
Why now in particular? Missing an absent parent makes perfect sense but in this case it did seem contextual.
She was good at nudging my father into taking care of himself. Better at it than I am.
