Edie was perusing the latest correspondence from her fork. She still should have been paying enough attention to realize that the door didn't go where it ought before it swung shut and she couldn't sense anyone else anymore, but she wasn't.
After opening and closing the door a couple times to make sure she hadn't just been abducted somehow, she looks around.
"Yeah, me neither." He's involved with the sad demon and maybe that is part of the picture but it's not as if he's going to air this observation in public, people'll wonder...
"'Kay."
She goes outside. She walks towards Macalaure's house and loiters on the doorstep, unsure of what to say.
She comes in. "I have been talking to Mai--to Matt and I really need a hug."
Hug. Clingy hug.
...She's just going to start crying, that's okay, right?
"I know. It--would probably do more harm than good. In the long run. Especially since I would know it wasn't real."
"The Maitimo I knew, who experienced happiness and had preferences other than 'cease to exist' is gone, and I need to accept that and move on, not--sink myself into denial."
Hugs. "He has other preferences. It's - he's not sure any of this is real, so he doesn't like signaling them or expressing them."
She relays what he told her about the inevitability of torture over infinite time and it not being worth it.
"Yeah, I know. 'not worth it' doesn't mean 'all indistinguishable' or even 'never really enjoyable'."
Hug. "I'm glad there are other worlds where things have the chance to go better."
"Yeah. It's probably not good for our Maitimo but still, yeah."
