She continues making that face at him for another moment, then goes and pokes at the rice.

Okay.

He checks on the potatoes.

...he tries to do that thing. When he gets to about half again within arm's reach of the fire, he's teleported back across the cave again.

"...Kobold ilya Scott?"

"Kobold ilya," she pats the cave floor. "Scott no go painful."

"Okay. Kobold and Scott eat, Scott no go painful."

"No! Scott go home now. Scott late. Late if I hungry now and then I eat when more hungry, I eat late. Scott go home now, Scott late."

"...okay."

She takes the food off the fire - teleports it away, in fact; it disappears entirely - and then offers him her hand.

He takes it.

"Sorry sorry sorry. Scott no want kobold sad or painful, Scott say sorry."

As soon as he takes her hand they're back by where the motorcycle was.

There is a search party.

"Go," he points at the vet's office. 

She disappears.

She appears among the cages.

Some of the dogs bark at her.

It's quiet outside, but after a minute of this she hears footsteps.

"Hello?"

"Hello."

"Scott?"

"Scott there." She gestures in the relevant outsideward direction.

"Do you need? Do you understand?"

"I understand less. I no need, Scott say I go here."

"You here, Scott there?"

Nod. "Yes. Scott say."

"Scott say...I go, I come. Come is no go. You understand?"

Nod. "I understand."

So he goes.

And after ten minutes, he comes back.

"Sorry. I go, now I come. If I want you understand, then I say. If I want understand, then I ask. Now I ask kobold understand. Understand?"
