A mostly quiet building.
There are dogs waiting for their owners, current or future or former, and an examination room, and a wooden counter between the office proper and the waiting room.
It's quiet, now quite a while since sunset.
The only employee is doing inventory.
There's not much to do if they're waiting to talk to Deaton.
Boyd tries to teach the kobold more words.
Scared, sad, happy, confused, angry?
Hot, cold, bright, dark, light, heavy?
She is an apt student, though she still hasn't adjusted to local time. She calls for an early lunch break and takes a long nap afterward.
Actually what she wants to do is open a portal to one of the more crowded places they drove through yesterday and listen to the people there talk. She does that, and occasionally asks questions about grammar or word meanings.
And eventually she asks, "people say sometimes 'he', sometimes 'she', means same thing or almost same, what's different?"
"Are pronouns. 'I' is pronoun, 'you' is pronoun. Use pronoun to say who. 'I eat food', 'you eat food', 'he eat food'. 'He' and 'she' pronouns say person who not me, not you, person has gender. Gender is confusing. 'He' is for boys, men, males. 'She' is for girls, women, females. I no understand how to say...no want to say...kobold can see my memory explain gender, if want."
Not really?
"Some humans are young, some are old. Some are tall, some are short. Some are men, some are women. Humans can see gender, if is man, is woman."
People continue to be people.
After a while, Boyd decides he and Derek should eat.
"Kobold want stay or come?"
So they head to Derek's couch.
Boyd grabs the bag he brought.
"Soup sound okay?"
"She's handling being kicked out pretty well. Not sure what else she'd want me to tell you."
