"I might be here a while - I'll probably look into something meant for longer use than a hotel sooner or later. I have no problem with an unenforceable contract, it's more or less just a comfort to have it written out at all. Other than that, what, precisely, will my hourly wage be and how will I interact or fail to with local taxation?"

"I'll pay minimum wage, and for housing."

"And taxes...?"

"Taxes can apply if you'd rather serve as proof-of-concept when our worlds collide, but it might give people the wrong impression to have been hiding. On the other hand, not paying taxes would look bad in its own way. Which would be harder for your organization to recover from?"

"I am honestly not sure. I'll fall back onto regulations, Strike Witches are not to pay potentially illegitimate taxes to entities not recognized by the UDF. Meant to apply to banditry and extortion under the name taxes, but there it is."

"I won't object. No taxes, minimum wage, but I'll cover housing and other fees based on further negotiations."

She writes it all down in a leather-bound notebook, with a dollar store pen.

And then they have the closest thing they can get to a contract.

Should they both sign it?

May as well. It's the natural thing to do to finish off this little ritual.

"So. What are my duties for the rest of the day, sir?"

"The supply closet could use some organizing. Both of them, the medical and the magical one. If you don't mind, we can start wth that, get you familiar with both sides."

"That sounds fine with the caveat that I am just a little bit shaky when it comes to reading. Didn't go to school till I was 13."

"I can help you identify most of the things I care about, and organizing the closet is less about a labeling system than it is my inability to keep house."

"No problems, then. Minor telekinesis will make it go quick, even if it's a bit of a frivolous use of mana."

"I'll leave that decision up to you. Your other official responsibilities will involve cleaning the cages, so you might want to save some for that."

"I knew picking up a scrub spell was a good idea..."

"If you can think of somewhere your abilities are more useful, tell me. Confer with Scott, he has his own role here, and you two can split the duties among yourselves. He can approve things in my stead, if I'm on a trip. I tend to go on trips somewhat frequently, lately, ever since werewolves and hunters came back to town. There's a lot more magic to be done than there used to be."

"...If I were you I would be bringing me along to anything iffy as security or insurance. You're important, from what I can tell. It's year one tactics to preemptively guard things that it would be disastrous to lose."

"I'm not that important. Scott and Derek are scarcer resources. But yes, I do have unique skills, if not irreplaceable ones, and werewolves are better at defending themselves."

"...I wonder if I'll stop thinking of things in terms of battlespace. You're not at war, I'm not anymore, and yet my head jumps straight to defensive stratagems. Heavy thought."

"Anyway, enough about me, we should probably get to work."

"Perhaps we should. Scott should be in the back, so you two can discuss whatever you need. I'll be out here, dealing with the bills."

Nod.

"Hullo, Scott. How's the day?"

"I'm okay. How's Lydia doing? Are you adjusting alright?"

"I'm rolling with it. It's not fun but what the hell are you going to do, eh? At least you have interesting stuff here. Lydia is... Almost like a refugee. Unsure of everything, it's not fun. She's staying sane far as I can tell though."

"I'll talk to her. Or I'll get someone who can actually make her feel better talk to her. Anything we can do to make your stay easier?"
