Shard, upon the Great Sea
Permalink

There is a peaceful cove of sorts, almost a cave, on the southwestern tip of Windfall Island. Perhaps twenty feet wide, enough water streams in from the sea for a small rowboat to rest here.

It's peaceful. Seagulls and gentle waves and blue sky and smooth sand. There's a sailing ship visible on the water.

A young man appears on the sand.

He looks up at the sky and takes a deep breath, exhaling slowly.

He sees a rocky overhang and blue sky! He hears peaceful ocean sounds - and what might be music, faintly.

He's not in a hurry. He goes to the water and bends down, dipping his hand in.

It's saltwater. A crab scuttles away, waving its claw in objection.

That sailing ship is turning towards the shore, looks like it's aiming for a spot to the left of this little cove a ways. It's perhaps fifty feet long, on the small side for ships. Sort-of-European style. He can see crewmen working the sails.

He will wander towards the source of the music.

That would be... Directly above him! There's no way he's scaling that cliff, he'll have to follow the beach around to a wide field first.

Children are playing tag or something. An old man sits on a bench eating a sandwich. There is one solitary building off to the left, looking almost laboratory-like, and a near-solid wall of buildings off to the right. Looks like a bustling town. There's also a bright red post box, conveniently labelled 'ISLAND MAIL'.

He will skirt around the group of children and go towards the laboratory-like building. He won't enter at first, but if there is a window, he will look inside.

It's... A shop? 'CANNON'S BOMBS! EXCELLENT DEMOLITION TOOLS! TOWN GUARD USES THEM GUARANTEED EFFECTIVE AGAINST PIRATES! PRICES START AT 100 RUPEES!'

He does not try to enter. He'll continue looking for the source of the music.

He can climb the cliff path around back of the town, get a dirty look from a pair of children doing some sort of race, and come across an outlandishly dressed guy with a string instrument trying various tunes and lyrics. He's facing an old stone monument or shrine or something.

"Hm, ho, huh, hm... Wind I call for my- No, no, that's not it either."

He'll stand back and watch him.

The guy keeps trying lyrics and tunes, dancing along.

"Ugh, why can't I remember it? I know I know the right song!"

He will look at the monument.

The Song of Wind's Requiem

Wind God's Gift to Sailors

"O kind gods of sky and sea,

Bless me with a fair wind,

Carry me far and near,

Bring me safe to harbor,

Storms I shall not fear."

There's also something that's presumably musical notation.

He will softly read it out loud.

"You can read Hylian? Huh... Thanks. Coulda mentioned earlier instead of just watching, but thanks."

Shard nods at him with a small smile.

"I think I remember the tune now. Here, watch..."

He sings the lyrics to a particular tune.

When he's done, a stiff breeze suddenly comes in from the sea, whipping his hair around. "HA! This is a seminal moment in my musical career! I've learned one of the lost songs of the gods! Here, take a token of my thanks." He foists two red hexagonal gems into Shard's hands. Then he sets to practicing, singing the song again.

"Thank you," Shard says.

This guy is very happy and will probably be singing for a while.

Those two kids from earlier are giggling and pointing at him, though.

He will continue to explore.

He passes a windmill and a mansion and an apartment building and a well and a stack of firewood and a cafe and comes to a small harbor. That fifty-foot ship from earlier is being pulled in to dock.

If there is room, he will take off his shoes and sit with his feet in the water, watching them dock.

A burly guy calls out to him. "Hey, go to the end of the dock, will ya? We're gonna be unloadin' here in a sec. Don't want to step on you or anything."

"Sure."

Shard moves out of the way.
