...not to do something, it becomes the one thing above all others that one most wishes to do.” (Silvers and Lotus in Oathknights)

"It's entirely reasonable. I do think you needn't worry that much, but it's a very admirable quality all the same."

"...thanks. I have usually found the amount I worry to be justified, but admittedly my data set is limited and biased."

Nod. "Do you want the time bubble to come down now?"

Deep breath.

"...yeah, I think I'm ready."

She smiles warmly. "Take care."

Their surroundings glow brightly and then movement returns to the world.

Jeanne is really better at calming down and herding people than she is, but she can do a respectable job of it.

Jeanne is fairly alarmed by the teleportation and currently not moving!

People slowly come to their senses. An oathknight that was captured quickly sprints back into the fray.

In the distance they can hear the battle going on. Including something that could be a giant harmer hitting things.

This is dramatic! But Zahara resists being distracted, since she can't actually contribute to the battle.

Jeanne does not so much resist being distracted.

They can't see much of the fight, but eventually a column of fire rises out of the skyline and then there is a flash of light. The fighting sounds stop.

She heads over towards where the fire was, then, to see if anyone is injured and in need of help.

There is no fire right now, but there is burning cratter in the middle of a street. Not a lot of injured either, plenty of people shell-shocked from the events, plenty of people curious, some others are helping, no oathknights in sight.

Then she'll call the fire department and make sure there's a fire-break around the burning crater and encourage gawkers to find something productive to do with their lives and people in shock to sit down with their heads between their knees and injured people to run lukewarm water over the burns.

No one is burned, actually, most injured were the kind one acquires when you are desperately trying to run away. The fire department comes quickly enough alongside other emergency services. Some of which want to escort people like Zahara and a volunteer that barely speaks English out of the area so "professionals" can take care of things.

Sure, she's not going to get in the way of emergency services. She retrieves Jeanne and takes her home.

And checks out this new email list.

Well, she shortly gets a reply.

Hello, Zahara! Welcome to the madhouse of armor-clad magical girls!

It's followed shortly by a reply from another e-mail.

Sorry about the previous e-mail. Things have been erratic and we never had a protocol on how to greet new candidates through e-mail. It never came up. Without wasting time with excessive formalities, to what we own the pleasure of your contact?

I had a very interesting conversation with the magical woman who seems to be more or less in charge of all this. I asked her if there was an email list.

Well, what can I help you with?

Is there, um, more structure to this operation than she was managing to convey, or is "poke monsters with pointy things" literally the whole of it?

Usually there is more to it when 80% of our members are not new recruits. I'm not a new recruit and I'm authorized to answer questions.

What do you usually do, then? Why all the secrecy? Do you have anyone involved who's not an oathknight or prospective oathknight?

Dealing with magic matters. Would you like to discuss this personally or at least under more secure conditions? We have some non-knights working for us, yes.

Sure. Is this not secure? I can fix that for you.

How so? And I'm adopting the policy of 'if you don't want something read, don't write it'.
