That makes sense! I think it would be pretty tricky, but it's possible I could make it work.

Another thing I was thinking of was a limitation where I could never shapeshift into a 100% human form, like, if I want to pass for human and use a shapeshifting ability to do it, I'd have to have scales under my clothes or talons inside really sturdy boots or something like that.

That has possibilities! I'll think about it.

Thanks.

She copies some more poetry into the notebook while it thinks.

The poetry gets little hearts drawn near it, and then, eventually:
Name: Mark Of The Witch - Grants: +1 ☐
(Requires Dragon Fairy Elf Witch and at least three of: A Thousand Ships, Angelic Tones, Emerald Orbs, Perfect Hair, Size Difference, Dressing Room, Like Roses, Well Endowed)
You can never appear fully normal for any species whose appearance you mimic. Some small detail will always seem out of place on close inspection - perhaps the wrong colour of hair or eyes or scales, perhaps moss growing from your skin or an ethereal glow haloing your horns, perhaps an extra eye or an iridescent birthmark. These marks can be hidden with clothing or illusions, but their concealment will never be flawlessly impenetrable.

Do drawbacks like this go into the synergy pot with the appearance powers?

Hmm, not exactly? I think they benefit from appearance powers a lot more than they benefit appearance powers, though they might benefit appearance powers a tiny bit.

Oh, I see, that makes sense. Are there any drawbacks that do feed into the appearance power synergy? I suppose Decorative would be a good candidate...

Yes, Decorative might do something like that.

Don't worry, I haven't become so obsessed with the appearance power zeitgeist that I'm at risk of taking Decorative for that reason.

If you did decide to take Decorative, I trust that you'd think about it carefully first. ♡
Permalink

I totally would. ...I know you said it doesn't usually happen, but I was wondering if there were any more drawbacks that came from somewhere else. Since, you know, I'm looking for new drawbacks.

I haven't gotten another overt update, but I can try looking through the drawbacks list and seeing if I can guess any new ones. Is there anywhere in particular you'd like me to focus? The Dramatic Damsel tree, maybe?

I’ve been having good luck with the dramatic damsel tree!

I'll see what I can do. It might take me some time to think of things.

In fact it takes about an hour before boxes start appearing under that message:

Name: The Wrong Crowd - Grants: +2
(Requires Popular and Dramatic Damsel)
In addition to making you popular with people who would get along with you and enjoy your style, Popular also ensures that potential villains for Dramatic Damsel storylines hear about you in a timely manner. Someone who falls into both categories will hear about you even faster.

Name: Get Rich Quick - Grants: +3
(Requires Motherlode and Dramatic Damsel)
Others can gain control of your wealth and its sources by gaining control of you. Stories that involve someone kidnapping you often feature those sources as a motivation.

Name: Keeps On Giving - Grants: +5
(Requires More Magic and Golden Goose)
Magic you have collected can be extracted from you without your consent. Stories that involve someone kidnapping you often feature this source of empowerment as a central motivation, and the nature of the extraction process is shaped by your narrative sensibilities and other preferences.

Wow, I kind of hate the latter two. The Wrong Crowd is pretty great, though.

I think it's interesting how The Wrong Crowd works best if you like getting kidnapped but want to be kidnapped by people you'd be Popular with especially much.

Yeah! That’s great! I want to be kidnapped by people who are really into me, not by people who want a valuable piñata.

I think Get Rich Quick and Keeps On Giving each have the potential to enable storylines that are as personal and intimate as the ones enabled by Hot Commodity and Delicious And Nutritious, but also have more potential to enable other kinds.

Well, obviously they can do that, but like, someone only wanting me for instrumental reasons is unappealing even if it doesn’t last. For me personally, I’m not making a value judgment here.

In a way that makes Get Rich Quick and Keeps On Giving necessarily different from Hot Commodity and Delicious And Nutritious?

I mean…those are still about me, not about stuff that’s separable from me.

I think I see what you mean, but I'm not sure. Maybe it would help clarify things to discuss specific examples?

Your source of wealth could be a cornucopia you found that pours out endless grain, and that would lend itself to more impersonal storylines because they would be likely to be about the grain instead of about you.

Your source of wealth could be a unicorn horn you gained from Dragon Fairy Elf Witch that heals people in miraculous ways, and that could lend itself to impersonal storylines if the kidnapper only wanted to use you as a source of healing, or personal ones if they were also fascinated by the mystery of your seemingly impossible powers, or drawn to you because your healing is personally meaningful to them, or if they just really liked people with unicorn horns.

Your otherworldly magics could be mostly the sort of thing you could be tricked or coerced into teaching or otherwise transmitting, and that would lend itself to impersonal storylines where the focus was on the source of power you represented.

Your could have specific powers that were meaningful to the person kidnapping you for them, like with the unicorn example, and that would lend itself to more personal storylines.

The method of acquiring your power could be something like a vampire drinking your blood, which would make Keeps On Giving more of an extension of Delicious And Nutritious than a separate source of stories.

It seems like overall you're more put off by the impersonal storylines than drawn to the personal ones, but do you see what I mean about how there's plenty of room for both, and the personal ones aren't necessarily all that different from storylines about you being beautiful or delicious?
