When Hyacinth comes home to her new apartment for the first time after a long day at university, it's to the sight of moving bots just finishing dropping off the last of her stuff and moving furniture into place. The full-immersion VR pod her parents gave her is safely hooked up in the pod room, her bed is in her bedroom, she has chairs and a desk and some bookshelves. Clothes are mostly still in boxes, waiting to be hung up in the closet. Holovid and a cozy chair occupy the living room. She doesn't have any food in the small kitchen yet.
"I'm still good to fight, just have a persistent ache all over my back since my wings are stowed injured."
"Makes sense. I'm useless for a bit, it'll depend on how fast I get my mana back."
"Count on it being five to ten minutes for one spell, half the walk for enough for a fight."
"Oof." Hyacinth winces. "Alright. I'll stick close by you and heal you in twenty minutes or so."
Another tight little smile. They keep walking and watching. "I'm not going to be much of a source of conversational topics right now. You're welcome to suggest anything that comes to mind."
"Can't believe we actually killed that bear. In Realms of Dragons if you fought something ten levels above you you'd just die."
"That's what I like about CORA: if you're clever enough with your attack, you can fuck up something bigger and tougher than you."
Does reaching level five, even before any quest completion rewards, make the brutal fight feel more worth it?
She checks her notifications. "Ooh, we are too. Good shit. When we get back to town for lunch, it's upgrade time."
"Yeah, for sure." She grins.
And her gaze sweeps the surroundings again, just in case.
Some small birds chirp and flutter through the trees, but nothing bigger than that shows up.
She'll go on walking, then.
"Mana's a serious drawback here, huh? Then again, normally I wouldn't burn to the dregs..."
She nods. "It's a moderately serious restriction. There's always room to expand it, but it's not something you can just ignore."
"In Realms of Dragons, eating would restore mana pretty fast. I guess I really should pick up that meditation option."
Eventually she scrapes together enough mana to slot a healing bolt and heal Hailey. (Entirely touchlessly.) Then they can continue on.
Hailey's posture untenses in relief as her wings heal, off in their shifted-away state. The ambiguous ache fades away. She lets out a slow, relieved breath. "Thank you."
And they keep walking.
Hyacinth uses her staff as a walking-stick, and is glad of it more than once in the not-too-clear trails they're following.
And eventually, the village wall is visible through the woods.
"At last, we're back." She grins.
She looks over at Hailey. "Let's see if we can hand in that bear paw for anything good."
