When Hyacinth comes home to her new apartment for the first time after a long day at university, it's to the sight of moving bots just finishing dropping off the last of her stuff and moving furniture into place. The full-immersion VR pod her parents gave her is safely hooked up in the pod room, her bed is in her bedroom, she has chairs and a desk and some bookshelves. Clothes are mostly still in boxes, waiting to be hung up in the closet. Holovid and a cozy chair occupy the living room. She doesn't have any food in the small kitchen yet.
She dodges back and slashes one paw with lightning. "It's faster than," duck another swing from the uninjured and non-spasming paw, "you, and you'll run out of mana for Glue," lunge under a bite and stab its side, "before we get back to town."
"Shit," Hyacinth swears. Hailey's right.
She could try and burst it down but that'll leave her with no mana. Then again, if she fights it the slow way the goats will come up from the valley and it'll be a shit-show.
She has to inflict as much damage as she can as fast as she can.
"Get back, I'm going to try and burst it down!"
She nods sharply, then dives back toward the goats to slash the two closest to getting over the ridge to chase them.
Those two goats tumble to the ground, dead, while the bear bellows its defiance.
She throws a Flare at the bear, and just as it explodes she Holds the spell, covering it entirely with persistent flames at the hottest intensity she can manage. The mana drain slams into her like a tide, dragging her mana down and down and down -
It roars in pain, the intensity finally enough for it to notice its injuries.
She holds the fire for as long as she can. If she can't kill it now they're dead anyway.
After a few long seconds, the Held Spell dissipates, leaving behind only the usual clinging fire of her Flare. Her reservoirs are gone.
"OOM!" she calls, and turns and runs for it again. It just might buy her enough mana regen to get one more spell off if it's alive.
Hyacinth probably doesn't see this, occupied as she is with running away, but she's done some serious damage to the bear. It's fur is charred (down past the skin to muscle in some spots), one eye has burst, and it's distinctly moving slower and shakier. It roars again.
And then a scowling Hailey darts past it, severing an exposed bicep with a shadow cutter mid-flight.
She lands between Sin and it again, turning to face it, wings spread, sword out.
She is booking it until she has mana again. Thank you Hailey but she is currently worse than useless in a fight with a bear.
(C'mon, regen faster...)
Hailey does not trust the bear not to recover a burst of speed and catch Sin before she regens even a shred of mana. She could escape it easily, flying faster than its full charging speed, but she's not leaving Sin behind, and she's not able to carry another person in flight yet.
She lunges past its left side, counting on the disabled left arm to keep it from hitting her, and flickers her shadow cutter to sever its hamstring-equivalent muscle.
It manages to get its right claw in place in time to shred Hailey's left wing.
Hyacinth risks a glance backwards, and catches a view of a bloodied Hailey facing down a grievously injured bear.
She needs to stay away from the goats, but it looks like... they might actually win this...
She plants her staff and uses it to pivot. "Trust you, Hailey!" she yells. "Use its injuries and I think you can kill it!"
She still doesn't have mana yet, but she's going to stay just in casting range so the instant she does she can help.
She scowls at the bear, flaring another shadow cutter and sinking her saber into the back of its head.
It manages to claw her right wing as she jumps onto its back, but freezes a bit as she sword sinks in.
Hyacinth readies her staff and moves to guard Hailey's back. There may still be goats about.
