Today in Milliways there’s a teenager with a sign that says:
DEFENSE MAGE FOR HIRE
I make objects indestructible, guard people against burns and command magic, etc.
I accept payment in multiple currencies, barter, and information about morality in governance.
At the bottom of the sign is a list of prices in seven different currencies.
Someone else put a lot of work and magic into trying to make him look nice years ago. He would be uncannily symmetric if not for the pimple on one cheek.
"I don't think it's something we've done before giving up on everyone in the affected area."
"If I'm going to give up on someone that badly I might as well kill them, unless I can't kill them. And I'm not sure I'd trust this ward to make it a good idea to let powerful people who I can't kill hang around my planet."
"Maybe if my world had magic for enslaving people we'd do it that way, but we don't. And I'm not sure it'd be better."
"Hopefully, if you have more options, you can find a better way than either of those."
"Could you have people who are about to get magic move to an antimagic field and stay there until you can vet them?"
"Probably not without them being able to carry some magic in? Because I don't know if people could get magic while inside the antimagic field? Since that might count as doing magic."
