the true meaning of friendship is not 'enslaving people you bested in a contest'

...She's a very clever human.

Wouldn't be here otherwise.

Most humans survive this long even with significantly less cleverness.

Most humans can't see youkai.

...Nyanko poofs back to her smaller form and puts her head on her paws, shrugging.

Yeah.

"I'll teach you to deal with youkai better."

"Thanks, Nyanko-sensei."

"Pah. I need to keep some second-rate from stealing the book out from under me."

"Of course."

"I'll work on testing you tomorrow."

"All right."

Seems there's not too much to do with the rest of today, then.

Except sleep! And eat.

Critical activities.

Essential for growing stronger.

So eat, sleep, and wait for tomorrow to arrive.

Tomorrow comes with testing, as promised, though it's perhaps more frustrating than Tsubaki was expecting, and involves Nyanko questioning her on her experience with youkai and challenging her to a fight.

Mostly stalking, haunting, harassment.

She obviously not a trained fighter, but she has quick reflexes and (as Nyanko-sensei has already noted) considerable strength.

(The strength alone puts her a step above most youkai, if only she could learn to apply it properly...)

Nyanko is going to get her to focus on applying that strength, then - and on her sensing, on recognizing when she's being tricked.

Seems fair enough.

Nyanko, it turns out, is pretty creative but not exactly subtle with illusions.

Tsubaki's not sure if that's really making things easier or harder.

Tests how she responds to 'youkai weirdness' at least.

Mostly with violence, since avoidance isn't an option.

Well, reflexively punching youkai is a good way to get them to respect you, if nothing else.
