when i was feeling kinda lonely
the true meaning of friendship is not 'enslaving people you bested in a contest'
Permalink Mark Unread

The first thing Tsubaki does when she moves to a new town is find all the local shrines. The sacred grounds serve as at least a slight deterrent to some of the nastier things she can see. (No one else can see these things. To them, youkai are just old stories. To her, they are a constant reality.) Tsubaki's moved around a lot since her parents died. She stays with various relatives for six or eight months, until they get tired of her jumping at nothing and talking to thin air. She's a weird girl, an attention seeker, a pathological liar, and the warm feeling of charity will hold up only so long before the weight of her strangeness batters it down. She's... gotten used to it, by now. She doesn't try to make friends, tries to keep to herself, stay quiet, eke out just a little more duration to her current stay.

She's moved to this area quite recently, and so is presently engaged in her customary project. This time is a little more urgent, as the monsters chasing her are angrier than usual, shouting something about a name before chasing after with vicious intent pouring off like a venomous mist. One may forgive Tsubaki, then, for failing to notice the binding rope demarcating the boundary of this small forest shrine until her frantic run causes her to trip over it, sending her tumbling into a fall in front of the shrine and snapping the rope in the process.

Permalink Mark Unread

The shrine shivers, a dark mist gathering around it - and a high, ringing voice like the shine of light on a blade laughs and exclaims, 'The barrier is broken! At long last...'

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rattle rattle shake gathering cloud of doom -

Permalink Mark Unread

- And the doors pop open, revealing... A lucky cat statue?

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh?

"That's... not what I was expecting."

Permalink Mark Unread

A powerful gale rips from the shrine, and the statue vanishes in a cloud of dust - only for a dark shape to emerge from the billowing clouds -

And resolve into a very pudgy calico cat with a near exact resemblance to the statue. "Few would remain unperturbed by the sight of me, impudent human," she says, in that same sultry voice.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A talking maneki-neko is not the worst thing I've seen even today."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pah. My true form is far more graceful and elegant than this paltry shell - and you would do well to fear me. Most with sense would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll keep that in mind for whenever you remember where you put your true form."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and ambles closer to Tsubaki.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Then stills. "What's your name, human?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tsubaki. Natsume Tsubaki."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Natsume, eh? Like Natsume Reiko?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That was my grandmother's name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Grandmother? Has it really been so long..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you know her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could say that." She sits in front of Tsubaki, close enough that Tsubaki could touch her if she wanted.

Permalink Mark Unread

She reaches out hesitantly to pet the cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll accept pats with a very smug expression on her face.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is a very cat-like cat.

Permalink Mark Unread

- And bite.

Permalink Mark Unread

She jerks her hand away.

"Ow!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Don't trust so lightly, little girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

She glares and flicks the cat on the top of its fat little head.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Uwah!

"Ouch! Don't you know your own strength, you impudent human?" the youkai complains, after recovering from a brief stumble. (Most youkai react far more strongly to even lighter touches from Tsubaki, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't bite me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't pet me like I'm some cat!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Agreed."

Permalink Mark Unread

Harumph. "You aren't particularly like Reiko, except in your strength and scent..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I never knew her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did your family never speak of her, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No."

"My parents died when I was young."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah." She's quiet for a long moment. "Human lives are so short..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. Then: "Say - are you her only grandchild?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum hum hum. "Have you heard of the Book of Friends?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A book containing certain names - it was Reiko's most prized possession."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Oh. That. There was a looseleaf binder with that name on the cover, but it doesn't have any names in it, just scribbles."

Permalink Mark Unread

She huffs out a short laugh - and a massive gust of wind blinds Tsubaki for a moment -

And when it clears, the strange cat youkai is gone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Somehow Tsubaki has a bad feeling about this.

She'd better get back to the house and check on her things.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately, her things seem to have been left unmolested, and there's no sign of unwelcome visitors...

Permalink Mark Unread

She starts digging through the box of her grandmother's things, looking for the Book of Friends.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's there, pretty much as she saw it last.

Permalink Mark Unread

- And there's an odd feeling in the air behind her -

Permalink Mark Unread

She curls into herself, wrapping protectively around the book.

Permalink Mark Unread

And something large and dark passes over her head with a powerful gust of air, followed by a crash and the sound of a paper screen tearing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she's going to get in trouble for that.

Permalink Mark Unread

The dark blur resolves into a much smaller maneki-neko butt, apparently stuck in her wall and currently mad about that, going by the wiggling and muffled curses.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tsubaki? Everything okay?" calls a voice from downstairs - Touko, the old woman currently taking care of Tsubaki alongside her husband.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Fine, yeah," she calls back. "Sorry."

She should... go pull the cat out of the wall or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

Somehow that doesn't make the cat less grouchy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Flick. "Don't break the house."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're a demanding girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you're a rude kitty."

Permalink Mark Unread

Huff. "Hand over the Book of Friends," she demands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you want it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anyone who controls the Book of Friends controls the youkai whose names are written in it. Of course I want it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think you can be trusted with that kind of power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And a human like you can?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of the two of us, I haven't ambushed anyone in their room and broken a wall with my forehead today."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grrr. "You'll be overwhelmed by the first youkai who tries to force the issue, and then that will be the hands it falls in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I'll just burn it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't! That'll burn every youkai whose names are written in those pages!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"I'm still not giving it to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Harumph.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Your name's not in here, is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her nose in the air. "Pah! No. I was the one enemy Reiko never bested."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Enemy?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles. It's not a very nice smile. "Reiko didn't win absolute command over the lives and deaths of that many youkai by being nice. She was rejected by humans for her abilities, and she took it out on the youkai only she could see - and she bullied them into signing their very names away."

Permalink Mark Unread

She... doesn't quite know what to say about that. It doesn't really fit with the image she had of her grandmother.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a story that survived about her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's one you'll still hear from many youkai."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Youkai are usually more interested in hurting than talking."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not very different from humans, there."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you had luck with humans, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I haven't been bitten by any."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe you haven't met the right kind of humans, then," she purrs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ugh."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Not something you're interested in yet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never bite me again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright, alright," she says, idly flexing her claws.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hrrmm. Don't like that.

Change of topic. "Is there a way to get names out of the book?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like find out which names are in there?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"To- remove them. Break the control."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Because... she's gone. And it would be like saying goodbye."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...You're a strange human."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Just then, there's a loud knock from downstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

There shouldn't be anyone visiting...

Permalink Mark Unread

Touko doesn't seem to notice the knock, either - that, or she's stepped out of the house. Whoever it is keeps knocking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not good.

She should go answer.

Permalink Mark Unread

- There's one of the youkai who was chasing her earlier! "Ah Reiko, you're really back - " they say, stepping forward.

Permalink Mark Unread

She steps back.

"My name's not Reiko."

Permalink Mark Unread

They step into the threshold of the home. "Certainly it is," they say, "And you have the Book of Friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not Reiko. I'm Tsubaki."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you aren't Reiko - give me the Book of Friends."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why do you want it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Rather than answering, they lunge at Tsubaki.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope she's gonna kick it in the face.

Permalink Mark Unread

They try to dodge - not entirely successfully, and Tsubaki's kick sends them sliding out of the house, twisting and deforming before lunging back at a higher angle - just as there's a rustle behind her -

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki is angry. Out on the street is one thing, but she won't have this in the house. Not this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

That anger seems to give her blows greater force.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Also there'd been a second youkai after her earlier, one who seems to have joined this assault, but who's clearly calling out for Reiko to return their name -

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will if you stop attacking!"

Permalink Mark Unread

The youkai don't seem to want to stop attacking! And also might damage the house if the fight continues here.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's got to get them out-

Permalink Mark Unread

- A burst of bright light and an enormous wind blow them out of the house, and Tsubaki is lifted off her feet -

To find herself nestled in sleek black fur, hurtling over the landscape - slow at first, the two youkai giving chase away from the house - and then faster, zooming down into the trees and zigzagging to lose them once they're far enough from the house -

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wait- Stop-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ungrateful human," she grumbles, but comes to a gentle landing in a field. "Do you want to be attacked?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They know where I live. I can't just run."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have the Book of Friends. You can simply command them to never come near you or your home, or to cut it out with the violence."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "No. That's not... It's not right."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A moral qualm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. I don't know. It feels wrong."

"I didn't make the book. I just inherited it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have a right to use what you've inherited."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. But that means I can choose not to, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You should just give it up, if you won't even use it, and if you can't even protect yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You didn't answer before. If there was a way to give the names back."

Permalink Mark Unread

She tilts her head. "You're sure about this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're interesting." She stretches. "Very well. I'll see what comes of your determination."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How is it done?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Names can only be released from the Book by Reiko's breath - which, as her granddaughter, you have. You first need to know the true name and face of the youkai, though if you have their true face the Book can reveal their name - once you have that, you turn to them, tear the name from the book, put it in your mouth, and breathe out, with the focused intent of returning the name."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't sound so bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's harder when actively being attacked," she says, wryly, "And it'll drain your spiritual energy - proportionate to the strength of the youkai, and the spiritual energy Reiko expended making the contract."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That makes sense."

"I want to go find those youkai."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "I'll protect you during this, and your future foolish endeavors," she declares after a moment, "To see what you make of it - and if you promise me the Book if you happen to die in this quest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If I happen to die due to you not protecting me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "The contract will be void if I don't do my part."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that works, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's a deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So if you're my bodyguard, what should I call you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Call me Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Pfft.

"Okay, Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And should I call you Natsume or Tsubaki?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tsubaki is fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tsubaki, then. Let's be off."

Permalink Mark Unread

Off to find the youkai who want to rip her apart, to see if they can be satisfied with a name.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, the one with the ears seems to need some persuading from Nyanko to even hold still long enough (the persuading involves Nyanko's mouth being large enough to just grab most of their body like they're a mouse).

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. If it works.

She concentrates on the face, opens the Book and flips through til it feels right, carefully removes the page, puts it in her mouth...

And breathes out.

Permalink Mark Unread

They sort of just - sigh, and stop fighting back.

Permalink Mark Unread

It worked?

(Tsubaki feels like slumping over.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably it worked? Also, yeah, she's really tired now, like some essential animating force has drained out of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Hopefully Nyanko-sensei can catch her, or stop the other youkai from killing her now, or whatever, but she's going to sit down for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko makes sure the other youkai knows to leave now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then retakes her Lucky Cat form. "You used a lot of spiritual energy for that," she observes idly, loafing next to Tsubaki.

Permalink Mark Unread

"... 's that why 'm so tired...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Snort. "Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Stick to one at a time I guess..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's still that second youkai lurking about."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want me to take care of them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take care of them... how?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Drive them out, of course. Or purify them, if you want to be all nice about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They should get a chance to have their name back too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then you'll need to catch your breath quickly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." Deep breath. "Okay. Let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you sense their location?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe..." Can she?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's... A feeling in the air, heavy and sad and desperate - it feels like a cloud of the worst sort of cold loneliness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Can she tell where it's coming from?

Permalink Mark Unread

It's hard, but... There's a heavier feeling in a small lonely patch of woods by her house.

Permalink Mark Unread

Let's go then.

Permalink Mark Unread

The youkai, Hishigaki, is much easier, but, as Tsubaki returns the name there's an odd sensation like she's floating, and...

Permalink Mark Unread

I feel... I feel lonely... Hungry...

(A skeletal hand reaching for a sweet bun left as an offering before a shrine - )

And a human hand snatching it away and popping it in her mouth, whole, making a humming noise as she chews.

- Hey! That's mine!

"Mmm - trust me, it wasn't very good," the human says, brushing crumbs away from her mouth - and smearing a trickle of blood from a nasty cut bruise on her cheek.

...That's not for humans, you glutton!

The human laughs. "If you want quality sweets... I'd recommend Nanatsuji's."

The skeletal figure shifts back and forth, unsure how to deal with this strange human, an odd feeling in their chest.

A smile. "Say, why don't we have a duel? If you win, I'll buy you as many sweets as you can fit in your mouth, my treat. If I win... You'll sign your name over to me."

The skeletal figure leans closer.

You're not afraid of me?

"No, not at all - I'm very powerful."

And they agree, desperate, hungry -

And the human wins.

It's hard to believe... Especially that someone so strong could have an injury like this human does...

What happened to your cheek?

They ask, as they sign their name away.

"Oh, this?" the human says, her smile unwavering. "A human threw a rock at me. He said I creep him out."

She holds out her hand for the name, and the figure hands it over and watches, speechless and uncertain.

"You have a pretty name, Hishigaki..." the human says, reading it. "So now, you're one of my minions - and when I call your name, I want you to rush immediately to my side, and do whatever I tell you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She's so pretty...

Reiko...

Reiko...

Another day when you didn't call my name...

So lonely... So hungry...

This is worse than before...

Give my name back.

If you're never going to call me, no matter how long I wait - I'd rather you didn't have it at all!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki collapses harder after this one. But...

"Nyanko-sensei. I saw her."

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Who?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Reiko."

Permalink Mark Unread

Reiko... the youkai murmurs. Reiko... Will you be alright on your own? Will you be lonely now?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Reiko's gone," Tsubaki says. "She's dead."

Permalink Mark Unread

How can that be? The youkai sounds genuinely upset.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It just- happened."

Permalink Mark Unread

I should have come to her side and protected her - she should've called my name -

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Are you lonely?

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

You should not be. You are kind, and you have many names you can call...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

I cannot stay, nor give you my name again... But you should call on the others who are waiting.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'll think about it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Goodbye, Natsume.

And they vanish with a blur of wind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whew.

That. Was a thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're soft."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. I do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess you won't have to wait too long for the Book, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to see which is stronger: your soft heart, or my skills as a bodyguard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I suppose we will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'll train you so you're a bit less of an embarrassing person to have calling me 'sensei.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, so the title's not just for show."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough."

"Let's go back to the house, Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can have celebratory food!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, we don't have any cat food. Maybe I'll have to stop at the shop."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Idiot! I'm not a normal cat! I don't eat kibble."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have some allowance saved up, we can get you wet food."

Permalink Mark Unread

She yowls and swipes at Tsubaki's ankles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that a no?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Feed me fruit! And rice! And fish!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you insist, Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh huh.

Then to the house.

Permalink Mark Unread

Where she seems to be finally being left alone (except for her new cat, of course).

Permalink Mark Unread

That's something, anyway.

She'll put a little snack together.

Permalink Mark Unread

For Nyanko?

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly for Tsubaki, but some for Nyanko.

Permalink Mark Unread

No. Mostly for Nyanko.

Permalink Mark Unread

As the one who a) has thumbs and b) did the work of preparing the snack, Tsubaki will have to disagree.

Permalink Mark Unread

And who rescued whom from youkai?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Maybe an extra slice of melon.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's learning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Possibly she'll feel more generous after she learns something useful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps Nyanko should start with manners.

Permalink Mark Unread

Given that the second thing she did after meeting Tsubaki was bite her, Tsubaki isn't sure she wants those lessons.

Permalink Mark Unread

Biting is very polite in certain circles.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Tsubaki would prefer not to be involved in those circles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Very human of her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. She is.

Permalink Mark Unread

An interesting human. Who should give Nyanko another slice of melon.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Mrr. Half a slice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Too late, she's grabbed a whole slice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Drat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Om nom nom!

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like Tsubaki had better hurry up and finish her own portion.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she wants any for herself, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Learning to live with Nyanko-sensei will be an adjustment, she can see.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least in terms of how many groceries she buys.

Permalink Mark Unread

She may need a part-time job.

Permalink Mark Unread

If she can find time around her training and youkai harassing her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. That's the trick.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko, fortunately, has full confidence in her student's ability to feed her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good to know. She guesses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smug stretch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everything about Nyanko-sensei is smug. Tsubaki doesn't trust it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's only smug because she's awesome and beautiful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Round and greedy, more like.

Permalink Mark Unread

Rude!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

Soft and squishy, like lightly toasted mochi.

Permalink Mark Unread

She turns into an enormous black cat in a billow of smoke, mrrrring. "I," she says, "Am graceful and elegant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll make a note, Mochi-nyansei."

Permalink Mark Unread

Annoyed tail flick.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki will take that as her cue to finish the rest of the food, before Nyanko-sensei in her larger form can get the idea to eat it all at once.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She's a very clever human.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wouldn't be here otherwise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most humans survive this long even with significantly less cleverness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most humans can't see youkai.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Nyanko poofs back to her smaller form and puts her head on her paws, shrugging.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll teach you to deal with youkai better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pah. I need to keep some second-rate from stealing the book out from under me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll work on testing you tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

Seems there's not too much to do with the rest of today, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Except sleep! And eat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Critical activities.

Permalink Mark Unread

Essential for growing stronger.

Permalink Mark Unread

So eat, sleep, and wait for tomorrow to arrive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tomorrow comes with testing, as promised, though it's perhaps more frustrating than Tsubaki was expecting, and involves Nyanko questioning her on her experience with youkai and challenging her to a fight.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly stalking, haunting, harassment.

She obviously not a trained fighter, but she has quick reflexes and (as Nyanko-sensei has already noted) considerable strength.

Permalink Mark Unread

(The strength alone puts her a step above most youkai, if only she could learn to apply it properly...)

Nyanko is going to get her to focus on applying that strength, then - and on her sensing, on recognizing when she's being tricked.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko, it turns out, is pretty creative but not exactly subtle with illusions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki's not sure if that's really making things easier or harder.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tests how she responds to 'youkai weirdness' at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mostly with violence, since avoidance isn't an option.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, reflexively punching youkai is a good way to get them to respect you, if nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Works less well in human society. So not great as a first-line response.

Permalink Mark Unread

Most humans can't shape illusions.

Permalink Mark Unread

Doesn't help with noticing it's not real when they're more subtle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Picking up on the feeling of spiritual power will be more useful than any other skill - some illusions are utterly indistinguishable from reality.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki is not entirely sure she really understand what spiritual power feels like.

Permalink Mark Unread

People sense it in different ways - what did Tsubaki feel when she was looking for that youkai?

Permalink Mark Unread

A... pressure in the air. A raincloud of the soul.

Permalink Mark Unread

An emotion?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sensing emotions is rare," she says. "You can use that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How? Do illusions not have emotions?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No, and you'll be able to detect the youkai themselves, and if they mean you harm."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be useful. If I can do it consistently."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will learn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko can't simply turn her emotions on and off - but Tsubaki can close her eyes and try to point towards Nyanko as the enormous cat silently creeps about.

Permalink Mark Unread

An interesting exercise. That takes her more than a bit to get the hang of.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Now you need to practice always maintaining that awareness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a somewhat wicked grin on her face as she stretches. "I'll help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have a bad feeling about this..." she mutters.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snicker.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep, there it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll help your situational awareness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know. It's just gonna suck."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pops back to her toasted mochi lucky cat form. "Less than getting caught by a real enemy would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I know. I'm just whining."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's almost cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Mrr.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Come on, let's not be late for dinner."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You've got your priorities, Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Correct priorities, you mean."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Food-oriented priorities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And food is essential!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"True, true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Touko makes the best fish."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was easy to notice with my refined palate."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So let's go!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Off to dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

"How was your day, Tsubaki?" Touko asks with a soft, welcoming smile when she returns.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It was fine, Aunt Touko."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And it seems Nyankichi came back for dinner," she says, reaching down to scritch Nyanko between the ears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmm good human, very well trained already.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think she liked the fish."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyan~! (Is there fish?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Touko laughs. "She certainly scarfed it down - and luckily we're having fish again." Another ear rub for the kitty.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good good.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're going to spoil her, Aunt Touko."

Permalink Mark Unread

She just smiles. "A sweet kitty like her?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm. "I'm going upstairs. Let me know when dinner's ready?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Tsubaki's going to go rest for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her self-appointed teacher stays downstairs.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shameless flirt that she is.

The quiet is nice, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

That quiet also never tends to last long - sometimes it feels like Tsubaki can't go a whole day without being bothered by some youkai or another, and she's somehow making possibly-friends at school (or, at least, people who like and spend time with her despite her constant and even increased strangeness). And, while she's hanging out with the closest two possibly-friends one day, standing on the bridge and laughing together and looking out over the water, that she sees an old umbrella drifting in the wind.

Permalink Mark Unread

Huh. That's odd.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What'cha looking at, Natsume?" one of her friends, Kitamoto, asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Thought I saw something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just a trick of the light."

Permalink Mark Unread

They buy that, and go back to chatting.

Permalink Mark Unread

(And the umbrella lands on the bridge, blowing lightly in the wind.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She waits until the other two are distracted, then grabs it up.

Permalink Mark Unread

- And glimpses a face within its shade.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shit.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the umbrella jerks away from her grip.

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets it go.

Permalink Mark Unread

It drifts towards a railing before flipping over, and a strange man rolls out, holding the handle. He's ugly, with a bandage around his head covering one eye, and rough clothes further worn by travel, and he's dressed like an old-fashioned soldier.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep, that's a youkai.

Permalink Mark Unread

He's just watching her, for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully nothing weird happens until she splits off from the other kids.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas, he speaks up before that. "You will do," he says, voice dark and low.

Permalink Mark Unread

Do for what...?

Permalink Mark Unread

He doesn't say, just waits for her to get closer to him - which she might have to, if she wants to keep walking along the bridge with her friends.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nnnnn she doesn't want to, but she can't stop...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your body will do quite nicely... I'll take it," the youkai says when she's closest, and lunges at her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Punching thin air is better than being taken over so she will try to punch the youkai in the face.

Permalink Mark Unread

That seems him flying back head over heels, though he recovers before he splashes into the river below.

Permalink Mark Unread

And her friends turn at the sudden motion. "Natsume - ?" her other friend Nishimura asks, clearly uncertain.

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was a mosquito," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

He laughs. "Scared of bugs?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I prefer not to be bitten."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nishimura teases her a bit more as they all walk, but drops it soon enough under Kitamoto's encouragement.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the youkai doesn't loop back to attack her again that walk.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's good. She'll have to be on guard, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nothing molests her the rest of the day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe Nyanko-sensei will know what was up with that. She'll ask.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did it seem like two separate youkai, or just one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not sure. Just one, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "Human-shaped youkai are rare, and sometimes powerful... Though I can't imagine why he'd want to take over your body. Did he look ill?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Roughed up, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still shouldn't be enough..." She'll ask for more details about the short not-conversation and his appearance, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki will share everything she remembers.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be strange if he wanted your body for himself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So there's probably another one he's with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. And he might not give up just like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nothing's ever that easy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Already realized that? Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hard realization to avoid."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some manage it anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd like to think I'm a little smarter than those people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You have been so far."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only the truth."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What can I do to protect myself?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can use barriers, especially if you know you'll be in one location long enough to be worth it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How do those work?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They imbue your spiritual power into an object or area, keeping those you don't permit - and who are weaker or less clever than you - from crossing the boundary you set. Most humans use paper with incantations written on it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That could be useful for the house."

Permalink Mark Unread

Snicker.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I already laid some wards, as your bodyguard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are they any good?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Brat!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think it's a reasonable question to ask."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pah. And for your information - I'm one of the more powerful, skilled youkai you'll ever meet. But - this is not my territory, so my ability to ward it is... Looser, than yours would be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So they could be better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They could be more thorough," she corrects. "Right now, I'm having to leave gaps for all those youkai you're constantly inviting - and I can't use the strongest barriers, because you're always letting random youkai in, and I'm assuming you don't want to fry anyone seeking their name back. The barriers will forcibly reject any youkai with ill will - but that's easier to trick than a barrier that will forcibly reject all youkai. And any youkai invited in by a true inhabitant of the home will be able to bypass the barriers entirely - I can't make it just respond to you, but that means any youkai clever or powerful enough could trick the Fujiwaras to get in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can we make things stronger just temporarily? Until we deal with this youkai?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. And you can place a second, tighter barrier under mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then let's do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll run over some of the theory with Tsubaki first.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a little esoteric, but not too complicated...

Permalink Mark Unread

Only if you're a natural at it.

Permalink Mark Unread

A hidden talent, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not particularly hidden, to someone with Nyanko's senses...

Permalink Mark Unread

She does have some use.

Permalink Mark Unread

Such a brat.

Permalink Mark Unread

It helps establish boundaries.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko suspects Tsubaki just enjoys brattiness.

Permalink Mark Unread

There can be multiple reasons.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki suspects Nyanko-sensei enjoys smugness.

Permalink Mark Unread

How astute of her to notice!

Permalink Mark Unread

Mm. Hard not to, really.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd be impressed (or perhaps dismayed) at how many don't.

Permalink Mark Unread

If Nyanko-sensei talked to more people, that number would fall rapidly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Talking to more people does sound fun...

Permalink Mark Unread

She can start buying her own sweets.

Permalink Mark Unread

As if!

Permalink Mark Unread

Worth a shot.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cats can't earn money or buy things, anyways.

Permalink Mark Unread

That may turn into a problem, eventually.

Permalink Mark Unread

How so?

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki only gets so much allowance.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can't get more money other ways?

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd have to get permission from the school for a part-time job, and she hasn't been there long enough for them to sign off on that.

Permalink Mark Unread

...That sounds weird.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's how it works.

Permalink Mark Unread

Why put up with school?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Because education is valuable? And if she wasn't going to school she would have gotten kicked out of other places she's lived faster.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's more to learn outside of school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe. But she won't be in school forever.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she thinks school will be useful after?

Permalink Mark Unread

If it is, she shouldn't miss the opportunity.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's other opportunities.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably. But that doesn't mean she should just toss this one aside.

Permalink Mark Unread

Feh. Her life.

Permalink Mark Unread

For now.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she think it'll become someone else's life?

Permalink Mark Unread

...She doesn't want to rule anything out.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's not something most people would plan for.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe not.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki has hidden depths, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Has Nyanko-sensei not noticed?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's noticed some, though she's sure not all. Yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

More time needed, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

A little, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least the rest of the day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which should be spent in sunbathing!

Permalink Mark Unread

...As good a use as any, she supposes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko is very clever like that.

Permalink Mark Unread

From time to time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pretty commonly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and stretches out in a nice patch of sunshine.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nap time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Until the sun sets, at which point it's bedtime.

Permalink Mark Unread

Convenient how that works out.

Permalink Mark Unread

A recipe for a good day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Passable, at least.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki's standards must be very high.

Permalink Mark Unread

Or just a little different than Sensei's.

Permalink Mark Unread

Heresy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Uh huh.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmhmm.

And: zzzzzz.

Permalink Mark Unread

To sleep. Hopefully in safety.

Permalink Mark Unread

...She stirs a little to a strange, heavy presence looming over her.

Permalink Mark Unread

What-?

Permalink Mark Unread

- And when she opens her eyes, she sees the man who'd been holding the umbrella earlier -

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

A strange feeling, an odd warmth washes over her, and the light around her seems weirdly blue...

Permalink Mark Unread

Not... as bad... as she thought...

Permalink Mark Unread

The feeling is interrupted by a loud, furious yowl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko-sensei?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like it! She barrels into the umbrella holder, throwing him off Tsubaki - and then a bright light fills the room, and he cries out and flees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...The wards didn't work."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrrr. "I still sense no ill intent from him, and the purification didn't work as well as it should..." she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's weird."

Permalink Mark Unread

"More that a youkai like that attacked you than that one exists."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. It'd be nice to be able to- talk to it. Ask it what it really wants."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll pin them down next time we run into them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to know what they want, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Kay. In the morning?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. I'll stay awake."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. G'night." And she drifts back off to sleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

She dreams of a misty bamboo forest, and laughter, and her fingers drifting gracefully over koto strings...

Permalink Mark Unread

That's not so bad. The music is soothing.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's someone standing behind her - a warm, comforting presence - and a shaded parasol over her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes. Exactly right.

Permalink Mark Unread

The dream drifts on like that, a pleasant haze.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wakes slowly the next morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a massive wall of black fur curled around her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pat pat. "G'morning, sensei..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Rumble, and a large golden eye slides open.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yaaawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sleep well?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I did. Nice dreams."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Odd after an attack like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Maybe. Not complaining."

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets up and stretches. "I'll stay beside you today."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just in case?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I doubt they gave up just like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not."

Permalink Mark Unread

She poofs back into her lucky cat form.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then up to face the day.

Permalink Mark Unread

And while she's getting ready for that day...

In the bathroom mirror, she sees - well, herself. Her normal face. But her hair is a stark blue.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Nyanko-sensei?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Hm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"What color is my hair?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Black. Why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see blue. In the mirror."

Permalink Mark Unread

...Squint. "Glass can often amplify spirital senses... Let me see."

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay. She lifts Nyanko-sensei up.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Hiss! (When she sees the mirror.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"You see it too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're likely possessed..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do we do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can try a more targeted purification... But the spirit doesn't seem to have been fazed by me purifying their friend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's probably worth a try."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a chance it will harm you..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Worse than possession?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on who's possessing you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there a way we can find that out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can ask, and if that doesn't work..." She pauses, then, almost reluctantly: "I can call a specialist."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A... specialist?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone who knows more about this sort of thing than me, and more about how to fix it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I didn't know you had friends, Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

Huff! "I'll have you know I'm very popular."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course you are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grrr.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. Before we try to find your friend, first we try asking whatever's possessing me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. Most youkai can speak to those they're possessing..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I... talk to the mirror?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might work best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay."

She faces back to her blue-haired reflection. "Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Hello...' a soft, feminine voice whispers in her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'...My name is Asagi...'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why are you here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm sorry... I asked him not to... But he's been very concerned for me, and he thought this would help me...'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Help you? How?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'I'm ill, and my body has been wasting away... It's slower when I'm in another body, but - he is unhappy that I have been unable to experience the world when sealed in an object...'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. I'm sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

' - You're kind.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"I want to help. But I don't think you can stay here forever."

Permalink Mark Unread

'No. My sickness spreads to my vessels, eventually.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there... a way to help you move on without hurting you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Filling an unfilled wish of mine, but - that could take some time, and I'm worried about the impact on you...'

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is the wish?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'To play the koto one last time.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"Like in the dream."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yes. You saw that?'

Permalink Mark Unread

"I did. It was nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can find a music store or something, that will have a koto..."

Permalink Mark Unread

'It cannot be an ordinary koto, but rather must be one of spiritual significance and power.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay, that's harder."

Permalink Mark Unread

'And it must be constructed.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"There aren't any like that around?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'No.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"What's being said?" Nyanko grumbles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Oh, sorry, sensei." Tsubaki quickly catches the cat up on the conversation.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A disease like that could advance rapidly in someone of your power - it'll be far safer to move her to a body like mine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Like a doll or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be best if she wishes to play."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.

"What do you think about that?" she says to the mirror.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I don't know if I have the strength to animate a body like that... Your servant must be tremendously powerful.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"She doesn't think she's as strong as you, Nyanko-sensei," Tsubaki reports.

Permalink Mark Unread

"A well-designed body will make up for it, and there's far more empty vessels lying around than spiritual instruments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. What do we need?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A specialist, to start," she says, dryly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your friend, right. How do we find them?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll recruit some C-lister or another to bring her a message that Natsume needs her help - she's quite well known, and rarely hard to find."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did she know Reiko?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Her name is in the Book."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So yes. Will she be upset that I'm not Reiko?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Shrug.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I'm sure it'll be fine."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should I go with you when you find someone to carry the message? Where should we say to meet?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't bother," she says, "And we can name somewhere like that bridge - though she might just find you on her own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll go send the message right away, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Tsubaki will... wait?

Permalink Mark Unread

Unless she wants to get ready for school.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Right. That's a thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

She could skip.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll save that for when she needs to.

Permalink Mark Unread

Off with her, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

To school. Hopefully Nyanko-sensei's friend doesn't swoop down in the middle of the day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Either she hasn't found Tsubaki yet, or Nyanko is holding her back.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Then she'll make best use of all her go-home club practice and skedaddle before anything excessively weird can happen around other people.

Permalink Mark Unread

She successfully gets clear of other students and generally other humans.

Permalink Mark Unread

Step one success. She should find Nyanko-sensei.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko finds her shortly before she reaches home, running alongside her. "My message has been sent," she says, "Though I haven't heard back yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think you will before they show up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Absolutely not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though she's pretty hard to miss, once she does approach."

Permalink Mark Unread

As if on cue, a cry dopplers in from the distance. "Reeeeeeeeeeeeeikooooooo-chaaaaaaaaaan!"

The newcomer tackles her in a hug and starts enthusiastically rubbing her cheek on Tsubaki's face.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ack!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko snickers. "That's not Reiko, Nanami," she calls out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What? Who are you, you mutant tanuki?" She doesn't let go of Tsubaki.

Permalink Mark Unread

"M- Who are you calling a mutant tanuki?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't worry, Reiko-chan," she says sincerely, "I'll protect you from this marauding youkai."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...That's Nyanko-sensei. And I'm not Reiko. Can you let me go, please?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not Reiko?" She pulls her head back just enough to look at Tsubaki. "But you look like her... and they said Natsume needed me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko's moping, and annoyed, and there's something hurt in the air that Tsubaki is barely able to pick up on and Nanami probably can't feel at all. And she's annoyed enough to bluntly snap, "Reiko's dead. That's her granddaughter. A different Natsume."

Permalink Mark Unread

She lets go of Tsubaki. "Reiko's... dead? But-"

"She never called me."

Permalink Mark Unread

...She looks away. "Reiko never called anyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sad youkai time.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So if Reiko's dead... then you have the Book of Friends now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's right. My name's Tsubaki, I'm her granddaughter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Granddaughter... I see. Well, Tsubaki. You can call on me any time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heavy sigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Speaking of which! What do you need now?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She's being possessed, by a youkai she doesn't just want to banish."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hmm. Tricky."

Permalink Mark Unread

She explains the issue with the illness, too - and her thought that a vessel like her own could serve.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably, though it'll need to be spiritually resonant. Easier to construct than a koto though, that's for sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

And something that can play the koto would be very much ideal.

Permalink Mark Unread

What's that need, just arms, maybe a lap?

Permalink Mark Unread

(Fingers, on those arms. Delicate, graceful fingers.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Can do.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's grateful for all of them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does the guest have more opinions about what the doll should look like?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some! She's rather partial to 'blue'...

Permalink Mark Unread

Ooh, exotic. She can work with that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Easier to find in some materials than others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you have any leads on those, Mochi-sensei?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who're you calling 'Mochi'?!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"You can't possibly expect me to believe you're a cat. You're so round."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have you know my true form is exceptionally sleek! Graceful, elegant, beautiful - this is a mere lucky cat statue I am inhabiting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh. Well, we're definitely not using one of those for our dear koto player."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though a work by the talented potter who made it might fit well."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be very fitting. One kind of art to complement another."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though I myself am likely one of a kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thankfully."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The world can only handle one of such beauty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd rip a copycat to shreds out of jealousy, Nyanko-sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or other reasons."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ooh, vicious."

Permalink Mark Unread

She swirls into her black cat form - smaller than she sometimes takes, which means she's simply a little taller than either Tsubaki or Nanami at the shoulder and purrs, flexing her claws. "I'm a sharp person."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrrr.

"...Can we go get started on that doll?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Yes - do you agree on looking for a ceramic body first?" she asks Nanami.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nodnod. "Mhm!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. Because my wonderful ceramic vessel was made by none other than the White Mist craftsmen..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And do you happen to know where they operate from?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "The great and knowledgeable Nanami doesn't?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've had friends bound into White Mist jars, you know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Ah." Awkward.

But: "They're in a pottery village called 'Homura' - it's down a small dirt path from a human village that's on a major bus line. I can likely find it from the air, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go see if they do commissions."

Permalink Mark Unread

She feels in the mood to take the bus... Let someone else transport them all.

Permalink Mark Unread

At least she only has to pay the fare for one.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the bus is empty enough Nyanko can sprawl over a seat or two beside her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lazy as always.

Permalink Mark Unread

More like efficient.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whatever she calls it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite a few things. (Though... Is Nanami's lap, by any chance, available for sprawling across?)

Permalink Mark Unread

Welllllll yes it is, she was kind of hoping Tsubaki would be the one to take advantage but that looks unlikely, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

She can pet this kitty, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair substitute.

Permalink Mark Unread

Indeed! (Purrrrrrr.) (...Vaguely familiar purr maybe?)

Permalink Mark Unread

One cat sounds more or less like another.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko would contend that she has a uniquely beautiful purr.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is pretty nice, as these things go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course, of course (purrrrrr).

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're pretty soft for ceramic."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My power suffuses this vessel."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you'd be more soft and fluffy than graceful and elegant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be graceful and soft, elegant and fluffy, all at once."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Multi-talented as well as multi-pronged," she says, poking at the kitty belly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"With many excellent traits."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee! Pet pet.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Tsubaki is going to determinedly ignore the ??flirting?? youkai.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She's welcome to try.

Permalink Mark Unread

It could be a fun contest.

Permalink Mark Unread

A good challenge for all involved.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'll help pass the time.

Permalink Mark Unread

They have a decently long ride, after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

Plenty of time to play with kitty.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who can purr exceptionally loudly!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki works on her homework for a little bit before giving up and passing the time by staring out the window.

Permalink Mark Unread

She and Nanami aren't being energetic enough then, are they...

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they should insinuate themselves into her lap...

Permalink Mark Unread

Stretch over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Leeeeaaan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki shoves her off without looking.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ack!

Permalink Mark Unread

She spills to the floor with a very ungraceful sound.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not very cuddly, huh," Nanami says to Nyanko-sensei, helping her up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"She really isn't... It's tragic. I'm deprived."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aww, poor kitty. We'll have to spend more time together."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Make sure I get my minimum quota of pats."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can do better than minimum, surely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though it might be difficult to reach 'full.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

Poke poke. "You've yet to see my full power."

Permalink Mark Unread

Purr! "You've yet to see my full greed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Promises, promises."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to stick around to see if I follow through?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I might."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd make a lovely addition."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What, you have a collection?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, if I'm getting in on the ground floor, then I want a share."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough. Consider it a deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nyanko-sensei, if you're going to be bringing people home, you have to be responsible for feeding them. You can't just freeload off Aunt Touko's cooking."

Permalink Mark Unread

Siiiiiigh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't worry, I can be a cheap date."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My favorite kind."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nuzzle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Are they there yet?

Permalink Mark Unread

Just about - they pull into the station soon enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. Is there a local map around?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yup! In the station, even.

Permalink Mark Unread

Great. So they're looking for a village name Homura...

Permalink Mark Unread

It's nearby, though there's no visible road to it, just a faint indication of a walking path.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough. Looks like they're going cross-country, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko leads the way! Tsubaki might have to rush a bit to keep up, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Someone's excited.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Or has mischief planned.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe.

Permalink Mark Unread

That is the face of an untrustworthy ball of mochi.

Permalink Mark Unread

Pah, shows what she knows.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything I should know before we get to this place, sensei?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They don't like demanding or disrespectful people, so you'll need to watch your tongue around them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you're more the danger when it comes to demands and disrespect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You want to do the talking, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be safer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll allow that."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then onwards.

Permalink Mark Unread

Homura does not seem like a bustling center of production nor trade. The stone pavers of the path leading to it are cracked, with weeds growing in the gaps. There's no sounds of an active village, just a largely undisturbed woodland. And when they get there - the village looks abandoned. The buildings are in disrepair, and several have plants growing on the roof. There's no people evident.

But...

There's a single thin line of smoke from near the center of the village.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this the right place...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This is Homura... But it was better inhabited last time I was here..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We're lucky it looks like there's someone still here then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm... "Let's go say hello, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then onwards, towards the trail of smoke.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a small cluster of buildings in better repair - one with its traditional style doors open, showing a young man with long pale hair looking at a shelf of pots. His back is to them.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He turns, sees her and Nyanko, and smiles. "To think that such a young guest would come to visit this rural kiln. Is there something you need?"

(...There's a brief flicker of his eyes, almost like he's looking straight at Nanami, too.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(He is pretty cute...)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. I was hoping to get a doll made."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?" he asks, then his gaze drifts as if of its own will to Nyanko again. "Is that cat yours?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is."

Permalink Mark Unread

- And then there's a sound of a door slamming open, and someone running up behind them, and an older man's voice calling, "Hey! What are you doing here? I told you to leave!"

Permalink Mark Unread

-Huh? She turns to look.

Permalink Mark Unread

There is indeed an older man, dressed in traditional clothes - he fits in to their surroundings far better, and he's glaring at the younger man that Tsubaki had been talking to as he steps into the display room.

The younger man just keeps smiling. "Oh, hello," he says. "Since I came all this way... I figured I should take a look at some of them, at least, even if you won't sell."

"I told you! There's nothing here besides simple pottery," the older man says with a scowl. "Certainly nothing interesting to a 'collector' like you." He spits the term.

The younger man just smiles wider. "Perhaps not in this warehouse..." is all he says at first.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, ick. Not cute at all, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko hisses.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the younger man turns to look at Tsubaki. "There's other interesting things in this village, though... And I want that which you have." He takes a small circular box out of a pocket, holding it up - as a strange mist begins to leak from it -

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope nope nope grabbing sensei and pushing Nanami and running now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets out before the mist builds - but she doesn't get very far before she starts feeling a bit dizzy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, that's not good. She puts Nyanko-sensei down, stumbling a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Tsubaki!" She tries to transform into her great cat form - and fails, swaying a bit at the effort.

Nanami gets a bit - not quite dizzy, but something close to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a warm glow fills Tsubaki's chest. 'Run,' her passenger says. 'I'll purify the poison from you.' She seems a lot less affected than the other two youkai.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Poison," she gets out. "Have to keep moving-"

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a barrier," she says, scowling. "It's a powerful one, wrapping around this entire area."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah. I don't- I don't feel so good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tsubaki, can you carry Nanami?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes." Scoop.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oops okay she's up now. This would be sexier if she wasn't feeling sick.

Permalink Mark Unread

And off they go, farther from the center of the mess - which seems to reduce but not get rid of the effect -

Permalink Mark Unread

And strange, dark shapes begin circling in the sky - like stretched out and distorted people almost.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they can get out before those come attack too? (She's not holding her breath for that.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They hit an invisible barrier first.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Owww..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's hide."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds good to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's some shallow caves within the barrier, at least, though they'll have to leave tree cover and might end up exposed to the flying things. Or they can hide in one of the abandoned buildings.

Permalink Mark Unread

Building is better. She doesn't want to get swooped on.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Too late! Two of the flying figures peel off and swoop -

Not, actually, for her. For Nyanko, who's moving slower than normal and lagging behind Tsubaki a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, shit. She's gotta help but first needs to set Nanami down so might not make the tackle-

Permalink Mark Unread

She can make just enough of the tackle that she'd be in the line of attack instead.

Permalink Mark Unread

So be it.

Permalink Mark Unread

- And then the attack is intercepted. There's a subtle flash, and the creature unravels and falls apart, specks of shadow dropping to the ground, and there's a tall woman standing with her back to Tsubaki. She's dressed like a warrior from a period film, and holding a closed umbrella in her left hand - currently propped up on her shoulder - and an unsheathed sword in her right.

Permalink Mark Unread

...What?

"Who are you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's get to relative safety first. Introductions later."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Where? There's a barrier, and some kind of poison gas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's a building Ban's servants should avoid - it repels youkai, but the effect vanishes once within, so your servants should be unaffected once they cross that boundary. It will be safer than here."

Permalink Mark Unread

Servants...? Later.

"Which one?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A warehouse on the outskirts..." She gestures to a tall building barely visible from where they are. "Follow me."

Permalink Mark Unread

In the absence of a better plan, that will have to do. She picks up Nanami again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko follows with pretty clear wariness.

Permalink Mark Unread

The warehouse she leads them to looks somewhat less abandoned than most of the buildings - but it makes the youkai all feel uneasy, until they actually cross the threshold at which point that and the general sense of oppression from the barrier all let up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whew. That's better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"Now - who are you?" she demands of the newcomer.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sayuri," she says. "An exorcist. I've been investigating that collector's activities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is a collector?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Someone who accumulates items of spiritual power, or spiritual items of historic importance, or powerful youkai sealed such that they're useless except as statements of the collector's power... That kind of thing. That man works for an infamous collector, and he's known for being ruthless in pursuit of his targets."

Permalink Mark Unread

Not a nice person then. "Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He likely is after my perfect body..."

Permalink Mark Unread

The strange woman smiles a little. "Now, certainly, though I'm unsure why he came here - though it might have been for the Lucky Cats... One of the most famous exorcism tools produced by the White Mist were powerful ceramic cats - though I don't recognize your form from the catalogues..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was an old man too, before the collector attacked. I think he's been here before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That old man would be the last of the White Mist potters, most likely - though he has no spiritual power."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So he's not really involved, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly. Possibly not."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's not on the collector's side, anyway."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Collectors are the sort that the White Mist have always scorned."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So... how can we beat the collector?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He's only human," she says. "A knife somewhere weak will do. But if you mean get him to go away... Make it clear to him he won't get what he wants here - turn the field decidedly to our advantage. Take whatever originally brought him here for ourselves."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to kill anyone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then conquering the field it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That barrier's going to be hard to beat. And the gas."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The gas should fade quickly, and it affects living embodied - your friend already has a way to get past it, as do I. The barrier... Ban will need an anchor for it. We just need to bring that down. And it only hampers youkai - a human could walk right through it, in some cases even a possessed human."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anything in a human enough shell, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Slight nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

Grumpy noise.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sensei?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Greatly put upon sigh. "Thanks to that stupid barrier, I can't take a youkai form - and I'm much weaker like this." Grumble. And -

Permalink Mark Unread

Wind swirls around her, making everyone's eyes water, and when they can see again there's a very human girl standing before them. "Nothing else for it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Wait.. she's seen this face before.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gasp! "Reiko-chan!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Grumpy face! Very Nyanko-ish. "I'm Nyanko," she says, waspishly, "But Reiko was the only human I was familiar with enough to use her shape like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, you sound just like her, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't get any ideas. I'm not her, and I won't pretend to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay..." It's still nice, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Have you always been able to do this?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take human shape? Sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might have been nice to know before now..." she mutters.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Doesn't matter," she says, brusquely. "I'm prettier and stronger in my youkai form."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair enough, sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk. "So, with the addition of my great and unleashed power... We should have no problem with this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We still need to do something for Nanami."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She can possess me, obviously."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you're sure..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am - having you in me will be interesting."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee.

Then- in she goes!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko's mind is a warm whirlwind of an embrace - Nanami can't actually see her thoughts, Nyanko is too disciplined for that, but she can catch the sharp edges of her emotions. One of those is currently fondness, albeit a very stabby kind of fondness.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's very cozy to be inside her, Nanami thinks. She likes this.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko seems to like it too, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then this will be a partnership to remember.

Permalink Mark Unread

Certainly.

And, externally to Tsubaki: "What next?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've got to find the barrier's anchor. And we should make sure the potter is okay, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The anchor will be near the center."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So in the main part of the village?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most likely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right. Let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would also suggest we find what Ban came here for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't have much information on that. He wasn't very talkative before he attacked."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What did he say?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um. He asked what I wanted here, then asked about sensei. Then the other man came in." Her memory for exact words is a little distorted by the surge of adrenaline that followed after.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might increase the chance he was here for the Lucky Cats, or he might just be acting opportunistic..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might not be the first time he's been here? The old man seemed like he recognized him."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I imagine collectors darken the potter's doorstep frequently, honestly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not catch two birds at once? Rescue the potter, get him to tell us what Ban wants."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a good plan to me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I doubt Ban has moved him very far, too - humans are heavy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I remember the building where we were."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then lead the way."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then out she goes. Hopefully Nyanko-sensei and Sayuri-san can protect them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Apparently so - and Nyanko does in fact seem much stronger in this form than in her ceramic cat shape.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Wonder why she's been hiding it...)

If they're safe from attack, Tsubaki will lead the party right to the building they saw the collector at.

Permalink Mark Unread

He isn't there... But they can find the potter, unconscious and guarded only by wooden dolls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Should be pretty easy to take those out, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

The only trick will be doing so quietly.

Permalink Mark Unread

They could split up, flank the dolls.

Permalink Mark Unread

Take out multiple at a time?

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems like the best way to avoid an alarm.

Permalink Mark Unread

If they can be sure to each finish off their doll in one quiet blow.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki is pretty sure she can do it.

Permalink Mark Unread

No problem.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll go left, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll take the one next to Tsubaki's, leaving the more separated - and easier to coordinate hitting - one for Nyanko and Nanami.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which she only grumbles about a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

On a count of three, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

A quiet one, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Right.

Tsubaki coils, aiming herself, ready to spring. Then at the designated moment- she pounces, to split the doll in two.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sayuri takes out hers with a single smooth flick of her sword, quieter than a whisper.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko is... Not so quiet. At least her doll gets shredded, and she isn't horrendously loud about it...

Permalink Mark Unread

(It's cute and sexy of her to do it like that, even if it isn't quiet.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Good to have someone with taste on board.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, she's all about taste.

Permalink Mark Unread

And meanwhile, Tsubaki will check on the potter.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sleeping deeply, but not apparently injured.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, good. Does he wake up if she shakes him gently?

Permalink Mark Unread

She has to get up to 'vigorously' before he stirs even a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm. Less good. She doesn't really have much in the way of first-aid training...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's get him to the warehouse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." Tsubaki gets him over her shoulders and stands up.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're quite strong..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. I guess. He is heavy though. Let's go."

Permalink Mark Unread

They can return more quickly than they left - albeit with more caution so they aren't followed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll leave worrying about that to the other two. Once inside, she sets the man down again, breathing a little heavier.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sayuri works on moving him into a more comfortable position.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do you think's wrong with him?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He doesn't have any real spiritual power... Nor a youkai riding along in him. This is likely the intended effect of that poison."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So it should be safe to wake him up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, though it might complicate things for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"He won't be much safer conscious than not, and he's easier to keep out of trouble this way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's a cold way to look at it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's - triage."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What if he has information?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A good point..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki is going to go back to trying to wake him, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

He stirs slowly, but he does stir.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello? Can you hear me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Mmm?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you all right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He makes an unhappy noise. "My head..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's all right. Can you sit up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll try, though he's shaky.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll support him as necessary.

Permalink Mark Unread

She successfully gets him sitting up, where he takes several deep, shaky breaths.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you know where you are? Do you remember what happened?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm in my village - is this that old warehouse - ?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah - " he says, like there's something urgent - and then his eyes roll up in the back of his head and he slumps over.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ah, shit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sayuri catches him and lowers him back down.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seems like he won't be giving us much information."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pah. I doubt he had that much anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe. Worth trying."

"What next?"

Permalink Mark Unread

...That's something she's less certain on...

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wandering around aimlessly will be unsafe..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could try looking for that anchor again."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

- And there's a very faint rustle, from where the potter they've all stopped paying attention to was laying -

Permalink Mark Unread

-What's that?

Permalink Mark Unread

- Seems to be something dark and shadowy dragging the potter up into the ceiling! There's a glint of light off numerous eyes in the strange mass of shadows.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey! Stop!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nope! Not stopping!

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko just starts glowing, a shockingly bright wave of purification -

Permalink Mark Unread

- Which highlights the mass of ceramic cats pulling the potter up towards a trap door in the ceiling -

Who nearly immediately melt away from the light, dropping the potter on Tsubaki's head.

Permalink Mark Unread

She scrambles to catch him.

"-Sensei, those looked like you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Offended squawk! "They did not!"

Permalink Mark Unread

'Didn't you say your body was made by the White Mist crafters?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yes...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Maybe they made other cat statues too.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'None of them as pretty as me.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Well. Yeah.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'As long as that's clearly established.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Prettiest kitty.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Preen!

Permalink Mark Unread

And, ignoring them: "They're the Lucky Cats of Homura... Spiritual vessels of great power, though few if any were ever actually sold." Pause. "I had a catalog as a child that I loved to read through... They're indeed all unique."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grin! "See?" she asks Tsubaki.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I said they looked like you, not that they were identical to you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pout!

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are they all possessed too?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll have to get a better look."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Follow them up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

To the trapdoor. Or maybe to find a stepladder or something.

Permalink Mark Unread

They should be able to jump up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, she can try that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sayuri reaches the trap door without an issue - it looks like much too far for a normal human to jump, though, and she sails through the air nearly unnaturally.

Permalink Mark Unread

Whoa. Tsubaki... doesn't think she can do that as gracefully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just form an intent, and then do it. Magic's an act of will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Easy as that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Well. Worth a try. To impress Sayuri-san.

Line herself up, coil, focus on intending to jump all the way up easily, and... jump.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes it! To an approving grin from Sayuri. "An impressive first try."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tiny blush.

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You must have a lot of power..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Never had anything to compare to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Most people would get nowhere with instructions like that - it takes power to force a result."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. I guess that makes sense, sensei's usually pretty bad at explanations..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Grumble. "I'm fitting the instruction to the student!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Putting forth the absolute minimum required."

Permalink Mark Unread

Humph. "I'll stay down here, then, if you don't want my effort."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can you keep an eye on the potter, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, whatever," she says, sprawling out next to him.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks, sensei."

She'll let the trapdoor fall back shut.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Sayuri pulls out a flashlight, flicking it on and sweeping it around.

Permalink Mark Unread

- Revealing an attic in fact full of ceramic cats, watching them.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Oh.

"Hello?" she tries.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she hears the voice of her passenger respond. 'They want to know what you're doing here.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"We.. wanted to know what you were going to do with the potter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a sense of a conversation happening just out of hearing, then: 'They want to protect him.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"The cats say they wanted to protect the potter," she says to Sayuri.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hum. "This entire building is very protected, isn't it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'They say it was meant to protect them.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"To protect the cats."

"Are you all possessed?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'...They're rather indignant at the idea...'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Forgive my companion," she says, seeing the uneasiness of the cats. "She's new to spiritual matters." Then, to Tsubaki: "Many well-loved objects develop spirits of their own, especially in a place like this - that isn't possession, since those are their bodies, the same way that your spirit is not possessing your body."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh."

"Sorry for the misunderstanding."

Permalink Mark Unread

'They do not hold it against you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh good. Why are you hiding here?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'They say that humans wish to use them.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"That collector?"

Permalink Mark Unread

'And others before him, it sounds like.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"We don't want to use you."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's a drawn out period of discussion. 'They distrust Sayuri, I think?'

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki turns to look at her. "We don't want to use them, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't want to use them," she agrees after a long moment. "And I suspect your sensei would be confused by the idea."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"Right. We want to chase the collector off."

Permalink Mark Unread

'They agree with that plan, so they will help you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, it's not so much a plan as just a goal, right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

'They can help.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

'They say thank you in turn.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you willing to come downstairs to plan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

After a moment: 'They do not want the potter to see them.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Why not?"

Permalink Mark Unread

It takes a bit, but: 'They won't say.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Were they going to leave the attic after they brought him up here...?

"I guess we can plan up here, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

'They can hide very quickly if he starts to wake up, they say.'

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be handy."

Permalink Mark Unread

Downstairs, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. Hopefully Nyanko-sensei can keep it together.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's still pretending the ceramic cats look nothing like her, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Works, she guesses.)

Okay, so. Ideas?

Permalink Mark Unread

Some - though it'd be easier if they were able to split up. Still, that seems... Likely unwise.

Permalink Mark Unread

Well, now that they know about the cats, maybe they could watch the potter while the others go out?

Permalink Mark Unread

A solid compromise.

Permalink Mark Unread

One the cats are apparently willing to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool. Tsubaki will follow Sayuri's lead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good - she has an idea for the direction they should investigate in, and she wants the others keeping their eyes open for anything odd.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki can be very observant. Only about a quarter of her capacity is distracted by the pretty girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

That leaves her with enough spare capacity to spot... A giant paper tag hovering in the air??? It's got archaic writing on it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Up there," she calls, pointing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That looks like a seal anchor..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She squints. "Good catch. But that doesn't look like an anchor for a barrier seal like this one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we check it out?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. That's a powerful seal, well hidden - I doubt Ban can see it, actually."

"It might be what he's looking for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we can't let him have it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whatever it's guarding is likely directly under it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's go check that area out."

Permalink Mark Unread

The area is a cluster of abandoned workshops, with a large central kiln. It's unclear what exactly the tag is hovering over, but - it looks pretty centered.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is this where they used to make everything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They probably had some smaller kilns separated from this, but - I suspect so. Especially any major projects."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bigger than the cats?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The cats may have been made here, too - but, possibly yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What other sorts of things did they make?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Vessels, mostly, so assorted creative interpretations of 'a pot.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How creative could you get with 'pot'?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Little smile. "The cats are one of those."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. That's cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is - I love their designs."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, you said had a catalog from the White Mist?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"An old one, as a child - it's been a while since they released a new one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What else did they do, besides the cats?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Does it matter?" Nyanko interrupts. "We need to figure out our way into this thing." She points at the giant - and sealed - kiln.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Right. Maybe a door, or something?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A kiln that size should have more than one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They'll probably still be the weakest point, even if they've been blocked off."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And will be most likely to open somewhere relatively safe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Rather than the inside of an oven."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though the inside of an oven would be a decent place to hide things you didn't want others to stumble on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd prefer to check if it were lit first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sensible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though it's not like they'll be hot after all these years."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be some kind of youkai kiln, I don't know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll go in first, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you for volunteering, sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All to protect my cute little student from the scary kiln."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh.

Permalink Mark Unread

'So brave.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Preen! 'I protect what's mine.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'A very attractive trait.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I specialize in those.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Don't forget to protect me from the big scary kiln too, okay?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Of course I'll protect a cutie like you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'You're such a sweetheart.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'To those who've earned it."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Let's see this haunted pottery bakery.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Off to find a doorway, then!

...All of which are very thoroughly blocked off, except a small door into the kiln proper.

Permalink Mark Unread

...So they do have to go into the oven part?

Permalink Mark Unread

Looks like it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Exciting!

Permalink Mark Unread

Is Nanami up for riding along into the kiln?

Permalink Mark Unread

She is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Even with the chance of getting burned?

Permalink Mark Unread

She trusts Nyanko.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good. That makes one of them.

And... Here goes.

...Into a room that is decidedly not, actually, the interior of a kiln.

Permalink Mark Unread

'...Huh?'

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think it's clear," she calls back, confused a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

Okay... what's it look like?

Permalink Mark Unread

A stone building, with wooden tables containing pots, and a wall of wood on one side - on closer look, it possibly used to be a kiln that was repurposed for storage. The wall of wood has panels, a small one near the bottom cracked open slightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe they wanted to hide something?" Tsubaki suggests.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems likely, with that seal overhead."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki goes to prod at the wood panels. See what's behind, or maybe peel more off.

Permalink Mark Unread

The slightly open one turns out to be a hidden door, with a staircase down behind it.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Think I found the way to the hiding spot."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good catch."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

"Should we go down and look?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

She feels more confident about going down with Sayuri there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sayuri can even take the lead, this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki appreciates that. And the view.

Permalink Mark Unread

The view is a little obscured by her robes, unfortunately.

Permalink Mark Unread

The grace with which Sayuri moves is enough for her imagination.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

They end up in front of a door held shut by a large seal, which Sayuri studies with a thoughtful expression.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anything Tsubaki can recognize from her brief studies?

Permalink Mark Unread

Not really! ...Though while she's squinting at it she notices that it looks kind of like the seal was broken and then repaired at some point.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Something's come out before, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or gotten in."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or that. I don't think that's any better."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could be worse."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, whatever lived here could be actively trying to eat us right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I meant Ban getting whatever could be worse than someone escaping on their own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. Yeah. That too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lots of bad scenarios, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Always are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll prevail either way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You always do, sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As will you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should we try opening it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

All right. Here goes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sayuri breaks the seal, and opens the door... To reveal a stone room with a large box like a coffin in the middle. It's closed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not ominous at all...

"That looks big enough for a person," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a good sign..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm guessing there wasn't anything like that in the catalog."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. Though I doubt something like this would have been for general sale."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not for sale at all, probably."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It could have been a commission, but... This was most likely a project meant solely for the village. Perhaps a guardian..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What are we waiting for? Let's look inside."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then Tsubaki will move the lid aside.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's... Empty, though there's a very suspiciously person-shaped depression in a bed of wood lightly padded with cloth.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nope."

"Only question now is if they escaped or were let out..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The door seal had been repaired. I doubt this thing would have stopped to fix that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's possible if they knew enough about seals - which isn't too hard to pick up when you're stuck in one - and were cautious enough to try to hide their escape."

And then, somewhat sharply: "Youkai are people. We aren't mindless."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Sorry."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "Just - try to keep that in mind. We're either dealing with a person, or a tool being wielded by one. This isn't some shōnen manga where you run around guiltlessly punching monsters."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just meant- most youkai that I've seen that had been locked away don't really want to touch that kind of seal again."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Embodied youkai tend to be sneakier and more patient - given the example of the cats, I suspect the potters would have made something that developed its own soul, rather than trapping an existing spirit. Those are inclined to hide themselves, and they're more aware of humans and human activities."

"But... The White Mist potters don't create weak seals. It would have been difficult to escape this without help - at least, in the time that's likely passed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long do you think that is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Somewhere around fifty years, though could be as long as a century."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be my guess, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Would it be possible to look at the seal on the door and estimate when that was broken?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably, at least vaguely..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If it was this morning or ten years ago, that would make a difference."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's take a closer look."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then over to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"This seal is fairly new... I can't say exactly how new, but - given the timing, and that no rumors of this have spread, I'd guess it was recent, and linked to Ban's appearance."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then... I think we should go check on the potter."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

Should Tsubaki go up the steps first this time to even out the viewing opportunities- She can't believe she just had that thought.

(Still, she hesitates rather than heading up immediately.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Whoever of us has the best senses should take the lead."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sensei has more experience..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ehhh... You go first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." Up she goes. Is she once again operating at seventy-five percent capacity? Maybe!

Permalink Mark Unread

Which means the first she knows something's wrong is when Sayuri's hand clamps over her mouth and drags her behind cover, soon after they emerge into the light of day.

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeep!

Now she's even more distracted, oh no.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko crouches silently behind them, gaze clearly fixed on something else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki will, belatedly, attempt to discern what the others have already spotted.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Seems to be a humanoid figure made of beautifully decorated ceramic, wearing a - perfectly normal jacket, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's gonna guess that's what was in the coffin.

Permalink Mark Unread

Seems pretty likely! And, luckily, the figure moves on without spotting them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Phew.

Um. Hm. Sayuri's still holding on to her. Should she ask to be let go...?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sayuri takes her hand off Tsubaki's mouth on her own once she's sure the coast is clear... But doesn't let go of Tsubaki's arm quite yet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wellllll. That's okay. It's nice. She doesn't try to pull away.

"I think that was Ban's jacket," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly meant to hide or bind the doll, or both..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good chance he was the one to release it, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Ban wouldn't have entered an alliance, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"What do we do about it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can create a new seal, if we think the doll will be hostile, or is acting merely as a tool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And then get the seal to the doll. Or the doll to the seal."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Almost a pity. I bet her koto player would like that doll...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Kinda depends on if there's a mind in there. Killing an embodied youkai and leaving the body usable for possession is hard.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Yeah. It'd be a really neat solution, though. If we could stop the brainless killing machine by putting the soul of an artist in it.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Poetic.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Mhm!'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Let's investigate, then.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'After you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to the warehouse with the cats and potter first, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, that seems best.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Said warehouse appears to have caught on fire at some point.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh shit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's look for survivors."

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. That.

"I hope the cats got him out..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bet they did. They're protective."

Permalink Mark Unread

They should check quickly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah - split up a little?

Permalink Mark Unread

Good idea. They'll cover more ground.

Permalink Mark Unread

They shouldn't go too far, though...

Permalink Mark Unread

Within shouting distance.

Permalink Mark Unread

At the farthest.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Time to get the search started.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki spots one of the cats first, watching her from under a bush.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey!" she calls. "Did you save the potter?"

Permalink Mark Unread

- The cat vanishes!

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh no! Can she follow it?

Permalink Mark Unread

She can't see where it went.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then she'll have to keep searching.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko comes to find her shortly, one of the cats trailing behind her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Did you find anything?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Let's grab that exorcist girl."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay." Sayuri was this way, as she recalls...

Permalink Mark Unread

She hasn't gone far.

Permalink Mark Unread

"What is it, sensei?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Found the cats. They say the potter's safe, but that doll - ate some of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ate them? How?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pulled them in, it sounded like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's not good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then we can't leave the cats alone while it's wandering around."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're inclined to split up, unfortunately - they can't really defend themselves, so they'd rather hide in small groups."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrr.

"Then we should try to stop the doll as quickly as possible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can try to seal it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is that something you have to draw up in advance?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, more or less."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How long will it take?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on what we want to do."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right. Would it be possible to... get the cats back somehow, do you think?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Not without rendering the doll unusable, even if it's possible. And it's a powerful tool."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It could still be worth the try."

Permalink Mark Unread

Unimpressed stare at Sayuri. "You said you've liked the cats since you were a kid. Can you name all the ones missing? All the ones eaten?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...If I saw the survivors in one place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you care more about trying to use the doll than the welfare of the cats?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - The situation is complicated."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Complicated why?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"My clan is not in the most stable position. Powerful tools would - help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At what cost?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not something you ask yourself a lot, is it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I ask it," she says.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe not to herself as much, Tsubaki thinks.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's silent for a moment, then: "My clan - the Matoba - are excellent at destruction."

"Let's break the cats out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank me when they're free."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sure, I can do it again."

Permalink Mark Unread

Small smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's get started."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

Then to work. It seems to Tsubaki they've got three main parts: preparing the seal, finding the doll, and pulling off the ambush.

Permalink Mark Unread

They will likely need to lure the doll to a prepared seal, actually - mobile seals are difficult.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll need bait, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can play that, if they're after the cats."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would work, I think. We'll need to find a spot to draw the seal."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's plenty of open courtyards and large buildings here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd prefer an open space, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Same."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Time to find a place to set up.

Permalink Mark Unread

- There's a soft rush of wind behind them as they work -

Permalink Mark Unread

What was that?

Permalink Mark Unread

- Seems to be the doll, which is rushing at her -

Permalink Mark Unread

Instinctively, she lines up a shot and takes a solid swing-

Permalink Mark Unread

- And the doll shatters.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

And a small pile of ceramic cats spill out and scamper clear.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um."

"Sayuri-san, I don't think we'll need the seal..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'd turned just as Tsubaki did - and is currently eyeing her with great interest. "No. I don't think we will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The cats survived, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile! "They did."

"And - it seems you're exceptionally strong."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites her lip a little. "I guess I am..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"My student definitely is."

Permalink Mark Unread

'Learned it all from you, I bet. Ooh, is that blood on her knuckles? Can we lick it off?'

Permalink Mark Unread

Sayuri, however, beats them to the punch, stepping up and taking Tsubaki's bloodied hand in her own - and lifting it so she can kiss her knuckles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh.

Blush!!!

Permalink Mark Unread

"More than just strong," she murmurs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She remembers how words work eventually.

"If- if you say so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps if I say it enough you will begin to believe me..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Might be worth trying."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll need to see you again to try properly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we could meet up sometime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I would love to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How should I contact you to arrange that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She can give Touko and Shigeru's phone number to Sayuri.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your guardians?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes. They, um, don't know about youkai."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be discreet, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course." (She's still holding Tsubaki's hand.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't feel terribly inclined to reclaim it.

Permalink Mark Unread

'I might have to give this exorcist the shovel talk...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sooner rather than later. Maybe feel out her thoughts on open relationships while you're at it...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Sayuri's thoughts on you fucking Tsubaki?'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I like to know what my options are.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Fair enough.'

'Though now I might need to give you the shovel talk as well...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I find you very intimidating, don't worry.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'And as long as you don't break my dear student's heart, we won't have any problems at all.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'I will undertake this responsibility seriously.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Smart of you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko gets the strong impression Nanami would be wiggling if she were the one in charge of the body.

Permalink Mark Unread

Adorable.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is!

Permalink Mark Unread

They should get this barrier cleared so Nyanko can appreciate her wiggles appropriately...

Permalink Mark Unread

There's still that Ban guy to worry about, right?

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they should poke these lovebirds about that prior to the shovel talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably...

Permalink Mark Unread

"What about Ban?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - I suspect he's already left. He doesn't like hanging around a scene if he can help it. Which just leaves dismantling this barrier..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should be straightforward."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just tedious," she says, agreeably.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should get it over with, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

They can stay together as they search, at least, which makes things somewhat less tedious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Might make the search take longer, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not a problem when the company's good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Should Nyanko and Nanami go explore over there instead?

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki wouldn't be the one to suggest it...

Permalink Mark Unread

Which is why Nyanko is!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki's never been able to stop Nyanko doing things, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

So away she goes, to give the lovebirds a little privacy.

Permalink Mark Unread

Cool. Tsubaki has no idea what to do next. Also: lovebirds??? What????

Permalink Mark Unread

They can hold hands and wander the village?

Permalink Mark Unread

Um. Sure. Okay. That sounds like fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely so. (She takes Tsubaki's hand.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(Eeeeee!)

Permalink Mark Unread

They're probably going to be pretty distracted from searching.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, goodness.

Permalink Mark Unread

Distracted enough that the barrier comes down before they can investigate very far. There's a distant smug laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that's one problem solved."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Convenient." She's still staring at Tsubaki.

Permalink Mark Unread

(More blush.)

"Um. Should we meet back up...?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think your sensei can find us if she wants..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. And at the most inconvenient moment..." Tsubaki mutters.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unless she also gets distracted." Like by that youkai possessing her being able to physically manifest again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can ensure she's distracted before doing anything else, if you'd prefer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I... think I would."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Today, or on a future visit?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh gosh. Um. (Wait, she has the koto player in her head, still.)

"...Future."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shy smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes Tsubaki's hands. "Let's find a vessel for your passenger."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Let's."

Permalink Mark Unread

Meanwhile: 'You can manifest in your own body again now...'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Aw, but yours is so comfortable.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'True... Though this complicates me touching you.'

Permalink Mark Unread

'Say no more.'

And out she poofs and into her own body.

Permalink Mark Unread

And she immediately pulls Nanami's body into hers, kissing her hungrily.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmmmmmmm!

Permalink Mark Unread

It's almost like getting to kiss Reiko a second time.

Permalink Mark Unread

The first time was amazing, and this is just as good.

Permalink Mark Unread

She might be in the running to beat that 'just as.'

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

Wigglewigglewigglewiggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're cute," she says, accusingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I knoooooow," she says happily. "Isn't it great?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's excellent."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're pretty cute yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

Preen! "I'm beautiful in any form I take."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And everyone knows it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Tsubaki won't admit it, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She just needs a bit more time, I think."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And some experience of her own."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well on the way to getting that, I'd say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though I need to make time to threaten that exorcist girl before she gets too far on her way."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to go find them, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think they've had long enough."

Permalink Mark Unread

Off they go, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now where is her adorable little student?

Permalink Mark Unread

Talking with the now-woken potter about purchasing a clay doll!

Permalink Mark Unread

Which runs into the problem that he doesn't have much suitable and ready-made for her passenger - he lacks spiritual power, and he doesn't have much in the way of powerful tools lying around for sale.

Permalink Mark Unread

What about custom work? Could someone else help with the spiritual part?

Permalink Mark Unread

- Perhaps, yes, if they had sufficient strength and clarity of will.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki would be willing to try.

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles a little. "Then I would be as well, young miss."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you!"

Permalink Mark Unread

More smile! "I should thank you, for an opportunity to participate in a work like this."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'll be mutually beneficial."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It will," he agrees. Then: "I'll explain the process to you, though... I'd rather not share it too widely," he says, carefully not looking at Sayuri (who he'd greeted as 'Matoba-san.')

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. Just me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She inclines her head. "I will fend off your sensei and her friend, then," Sayuri says, not showing any of her disappointment.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks."

Pottery time?

Permalink Mark Unread

Pottery time!

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki is a diligent and attentive student (and will consult her passenger for aesthetic opinions, if that comes up).

Permalink Mark Unread

It does, as a matter of fact - and she has quite a lot of aesthetic opinions, actually. Though she tries very hard to be polite about them.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's important she gets to express herself.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki is very sweet.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's just doing her best.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her best is very commendable.

Permalink Mark Unread

Thanks.

Permalink Mark Unread

And soon enough, they're far enough along for the spirit to transfer over - though the potter would like Tsubaki to visit again to help with finishing the body. "You've got a good touch with this too," he says.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can try to come by this weekend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd appreciate it. And I'll teach you some more tricks then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll make her goodbyes then, and off to find Sayuri and Nyanko-sensei.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko pops almost immediately into her great cat form, bouncing impatiently. "Are we ready to go?" she asks.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Going to come back and finish this weekend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good. We've spent long enough here today."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You must have napping to catch up on, sensei."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A lot!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Better hurry, then."

"Sayuri-san, it was- good to meet you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's been my pleasure."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll do a quick bow, then... off?

Permalink Mark Unread

Off! Back home with her and Tsubaki - and Nanami, if she wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, she's got nothing else going on really.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, then! She can join Nyanko for afternoon napping.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle time! She's a big fan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yessssss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Quite enthusiastic for something so... quiet.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want more noise?

Permalink Mark Unread

...Quiet is fine, actually.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snrk.

Quiet snuggling it is. Maybe a low, rumbly purr.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair enough.

Permalink Mark Unread

Tsubaki is welcome to join the purr pile, if she wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

She should try to get ahead on homework, actually. She's going to be busy for the next little while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww...

Permalink Mark Unread

Sometimes that's just how things shake out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her loss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep. Too bad sensei's too big to curl up next to Tsubaki's desk...

Permalink Mark Unread

...She can shrink...

Permalink Mark Unread

That would let them get closer to the best of both worlds.

Permalink Mark Unread

What does Nanami think about a somewhat smaller Nyanko mattress?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds just as good to cuddle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good! (Double snuggles!)

Permalink Mark Unread

Glorious soft fluffy kitty!

Permalink Mark Unread

Purrrrrrrrr! (She is so soft and fluffy.)

Permalink Mark Unread

(They are kind of cute together...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko slowly falls asleep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah, it's been a long day.

Tsubaki will make sure she's up for dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best human!

Permalink Mark Unread

Agreed, Tsubaki is excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

She's flattered.

Permalink Mark Unread

She should be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Will Nanami also be joining them?

Permalink Mark Unread

She doesn't want to cause trouble for Tsubaki.

Permalink Mark Unread

No trouble at all, if you ask Nyanko.

Permalink Mark Unread

Which she wasn't. Because Nyanko's name isn't Tsubaki.

Permalink Mark Unread

Then it's up to Tsubaki to make the call.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her aunt and uncle can't see youkai, so it might be a little weird.

Permalink Mark Unread

How's Nyanko get around that?

Permalink Mark Unread

Her Lucky Cat form is visible to humans, and she's powerful enough to make the shapes she wears - like the human shift - visible to humans as well.

Permalink Mark Unread

Not so much an option for Nanami...

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps they can figure something out...

Permalink Mark Unread

Though maybe not in time for dinner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unfortunately so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe she'll come back for that sometime.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko can teach her!

Permalink Mark Unread

That would be excellent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Headbutt purr.

Permalink Mark Unread

Scritch scritch. So she'll leave them to it and find them tomorrow?

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds like a good plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

It was nice to meet her, even if they didn't exactly wind up needing her expertise.

Permalink Mark Unread

She thinks Tsubaki will find Nanami has many uses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko snickers as she shifts to her Lucky Cat form. "We'll have to work hard and find all of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe not that hard. I intend to be cooperative."

Permalink Mark Unread

Headbutt. "And Tsubaki owns your name, which will help."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So she does. Call anytime you need me, okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Or anytime you want her."

Permalink Mark Unread

She baps Nyanko lightly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm right though, aren't I?" she asks Nanami.

Permalink Mark Unread

"You absolutely are, kitty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll see you later, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

And with a wave, she's off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Nyanko shakes her head, amused. Then, to Tsubaki: "It seems you're making your own friends now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You mean Sayuri-san?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Nanami."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I guess so."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs again. "Come on, I smell fish!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Lead the way, sensei."
