"Yes, what I was about to say."

She looks over at Beryllia. "Uh, the dominant religion here is the Asrai Spark, which teaches that there is a creative flame in every sentient being that waits to be unleashed. Some sects take that in a scary direction and ask for sacrifices to feed the flame - usually time or money, but some of the worst ones have sacrificed people - while others make sanctuary cults and try to feed the hungry, help the helpless, and generally do good works and create spiritual art. If you can do miracles that might be enough to convince a lot of people, but the actual power source being proved to be a real and benevolent deity would do a lot more for you. There are known supernatural phenomena here, though they're rare, so people are careful about proposing divinity as an explanation for things."

"Just because we can't explain them now doesn't mean they're unexplainable..."

"Yes, yes. Do you want to explain the Bridging Flame or shall I?"

"Go ahead."

"Alright, so, the legends go that thousands of years ago, there was a silver-haired woman who could walk between worlds. She had the Bridging Flame, a power to bring things between planes, and she introduced the persines and the elishes -"

"Both of which show distinct signs of having been edited by magic in their DNA!"

"Am I telling the story or are you, Hex?"

"Sorry. It's just cool to have some actual evidence for the legend."

" - anyway she was supposed to have done a bunch of things in the rough vicinity of the Inner Sea -"

"But to what degree she was a historical figure we can only guess."

"Yeah, basically. I believe Aventurine actually existed but I have little certainty which events attributed to her actually happened."

If you were an optimist, you could potentially hear that story about a creative flame in every sentient being and imagine some extremely distant and garbled version of the true Word and the Light Eternal.

The part with setting people on fire about it is the chief problem with that.

Maybe, possibly, they're incredibly far from Heaven and got one cleric Chosen long ago? Who did their best, and could shift through planes, and died, and now this is what they left behind?

This kind of... careful doubt... is something she's essentially only seen among the better sorts of theologian. That's comforting, at least.

The cults not showing any obvious infernal power is odd. Some kind of noble lie to keep people from joining them, maybe... foolish, but understandable.

"I see. Could you explain these - phenomena? ...To be clear you should almost certainly not join any cults. There are countless horrific Powers in the world, and Five true gods. ...Five known true gods, if you have not heard of Them here perhaps we have not heard of others."

"Some people are Agejumpers. They can span long distances in an instant by adjusting their apparent age up and down proportionally to how far they travel. If they push it too far they start to lose their awareness of memories they formed at other ages than the one they jumped to."

"And there are a number of artifacts claimed to be from other worlds. The Flame in the Stone is the best known one - it's a small ember of purple fire coming from an altar that has burned for centuries with no apparent fuel source. Today it's held in the high temple of the Asrai off Dreiba."

"Modern science is fairly sure that there is such a thing as a 'soul', but harnessing it deliberately is still beyond us."

"Well, there are the persine derivatives, that's not nothing."

"I guess so, yeah."

"...I see."

Wizardry is absolutely not her Art, but she needs a working knowledge to save the stupid bastards from themselves when they can, and Agejumping absolutely sounds like some kind of horrible nonCanonical Teleport.

"Souls are real, they are what you are. If you could truly harness them then you would have grasped the nature of God - which is to say I think you will struggle. Do you know what world the Flame in the Stone comes from? I am well in a state of grace as yet, I may as well try to confirm that story now."

"I'm not an expert on that discourse, but it's generally agreed that the world it came from was constantly rainy. There are like a half-dozen names for the world it came from - Forge, Moonlight, Crucible and Huntstead are the ones I recall."

"Personally I think it's more likely a relic of Adventurine's. Something she made and forgot about a long long time ago."

"If you can teleport then you might be able to go see it for yourself?"

"I can show you a map of the planet —"

Dove opens her clamshell, exposing two inner screens, and shows Beryllia a map of the globe. "See, here we are in Londinium, and over the ocean here is where the Flame in the Stone is kept." She zooms and taps a circle, and a UI element pops up showing a large temple of white marble built around a surprisingly humble altar in the center, upon which there is indeed a purple flame. "If you want to get ahold of church officials there'd be no better place to go."

(Someone from Earth would recognize where Dove started as being somewhere in the Toronto area in Canada, while the other end is in the Mediterranian Sea off Italy.)

"Ah. I meant the world the Flame in the Stone came from. Is anything else known about it? If not - you are all more than welcome to come with me to see the Flame, and then perhaps to its world once I have had the chance to examine it. Gates are wide enough to accommodate you, and it is as good a place to start as any."

"Cool, roadtrip! Well, teleport trip."
