The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours. (Or: In which Ophelia found the source of the rakghoul plague, and Mace Windu found *her*.)

"In a sense. It isn't of any strategic importance. It's more like no-man's-land. Sidious having been there at all would make it a valid military objective for the Republic to seize it. But even I know we won't be popular with the Senate now."

"Whyever not?  We just foiled a Sith Lord's plot to hollow out the Republic from the inside and turn it into a new Sith Empire.  This can be spun in our favor if we move quickly."

"Mourne, we pulled every Jedi from the front. We were Generals in this war. The Republic is vast. The CIS is already moving, we're already in retreat."

"Ah.  That I had not yet become consciously aware of -

"...There isn't a Chancellor right now, that's not presently dangerous.  Cut out the chain from the top down and it won't transmit anyway, because enough of the clones do actually like you."

"...Mourne, we appreciate everything you've done and we aren't making this decision lightly, but we aren't going to gamble the existence of the Order on that. It encompasses the death of most of the Jedi, it's difficult to see in the Force. It shouldn't even be possible."

"I'm not saying you should go back.  The damage is done.  But I am saying that you had time to make that decision properly rather than panicking.  It has been approximately thirty minutes."

"Orders can disseminate to the entire clone army within five standard minutes. We weren't risking Sidious sending that order remotely."

All right, even from across the room, Senator Amidala has multiple bone fractures yanked together with battlefield healing, massive systemic Dark Side damage, and frankly incredible psychological trauma. Please accept an induced trance and dedicated attention from a Jedi Master.

Thank you. Politely, fuck off, where's Anakin.

Unconscious and staying that way for the foreseeable.

"...Hm.  Ah.  Yes.  Right.  I had missed, for a moment, that the clones wouldn't immediately know he was supposed to be dead if no-one told them, and none of his tools would tell them.  With that in mind, yes, good plan.  ...I should probably go after Senator Amidala."

Senator Amidala has multiple bone fractures yanked together with battlefield healing, massive systemic Dark Side damage, and frankly incredible psychological trauma.

Excuse you, she fixed that carefully and properly, for all that the process was rough.  She had time enough, it's not like there were people actively shooting at her, which is when you do do the quick-and-dirty patch jobs to get somewhere they're not doing that.  Those bones are in better-than-new condition, so help her.

...Hm.  They weren't, actually, necessarily supposed to be in better than new condition.  Oops?

All right, they'll also check more thoroughly for osseous hypertrophy, even though they don't sense it.

Seriously, Senator, this isn't just because you're not a Jedi, it isn't just because you're a civilian, they'd be saying the same thing to Master Yoda himself, this isn't the time to be all brave and Publicly A Strong Politician To Vote For, they're all already impressed that you're still standing upright and forming sentences and everything, lie down and let an actual master healer look at you.

She didn't ask for a medical opinion. She asked to see her husband. They don't have so many allies in the Senate right now that they can afford to piss her off.

...A problem occurring because of her healing would not remotely be better than new condition, now would it?  Ah, well.  You don't have her latest physical on file to know better.

Anakin's this way, Senator.

He's unconscious. Twitching occasionally. His face is creased slightly with a frown, but he's quite extremely drugged. He is unobtrusively, respectfully, securely shackled to the bed, and much more significantly that's one of the drug cocktails that makes it incredibly difficult to concentrate on the Force even if you're conscious.

...Excuse her for just a moment Senator she needs to go check on something.

Where's the other Fallen Jedi they have?

Also in the Halls. Her bed is surrounded with flowers and chocolates and other gifts, still fresh, she was well-liked. Her head is bound in a single strip of clean cloth - it doesn't look like a bandage. Her eyes sometimes open, but they don't focus. She doesn't have very much presence in the Force. Her brain is apparently in perfect health.

...Okay.  So it's not as bad as it could have been and they're not doing that for everybody.

She thinks she could do better than that, though.  With Anakin's actual cooperation...

Anyway.

She's going to nudge Depa's Force Presence with the sense of driving him out.

Since she's here, and she did it.  She forced him to abandon this ploy.  He's not dead like she wanted, but he's gone.

It's safe to come back now.

She doesn't, necessarily, expect that to work, but she thinks she would not be happy with herself if she did not at least try this now that she is here.

the horror

...

She shifts a little as though to sit up, but loses focus on the movement halfway through and collapses back down. Her hand makes it halfway to her temple before she goes limp.

He will not get the chance to come back worse if she has anything to say about it.  They're already chasing down his trail.

We could use your help, if you're up for it.  Blinded in the Force and hindered by the very structure of the Republic turned against you, you found him.  He doesn't have those advantages now.  The Chancellor is dead.  He has had to sacrifice much of his plans to merely escape.

Do you want to meet the woman who foiled him long enough for the rest of us to finish the job, actually?  Perhaps you've met before, actually, I don't know - but I think the Sith Lord made an actual mistake today.  He underestimated what one woman without a single whit of Force-Sensitivity could do to stop him.  And if that is so, then he is nowhere near as inevitable as his lies have made him out to be.

I assume, of course, but I've never met a Sith who didn't like to gloat.

ha ha ha ha ha

doesn't matter

you finished nothing

he's still alive

even when you rip kill gnaw his bones

the darkness will always be there he isn't any worse than you he's just less blind less weak less stupid he'd live a few days longer in the jungle

(Her body convulses on the bed, then relaxes. Her eyes snap open, then closed. She's catheterised, so she can't wet herself. The Dark Side of the Force flickers around her and then it's gone.)

...I'll come back when he's dead.

"...It may be that we should be prioritizing inspecting jungle planets," she says to her mask alone.

Then - if there is nothing else said - she goes back to Anakin's room.

"Prophecies."

Why did it have to be prophecies.

Still, she'll nudge the prioritization a bit.
