"I'm not exactly happy about it either, but you need someone who knows something about the Consumed."

Amira sighs. "So, Lily..."

"If you're going west, what's going to happen to me?"

"I don't know. We'll have to talk about it."

"She can ride inside Talance or Lygos?" Kamryn suggests off-hand.

She turns back to Lily, "You might slow us down but we can figure out ways to minimize that. If you'd rather stay with us than go off on your own."

"I..."

Lily looks down at her feet. 

"I don't know. I don't want to slow you down if it's this important, but... I don't know what I'll do without Amira."

"If you're okay with being inside Lygos for long stretches of time, I don't think you would, actually, slow us down? He might even be faster with a nourishing source of pleasure besides me. Talance might be slowed down if she has to fight, depending on what we run into, but there's no reason to assume that will come up often enough to justify abandoning you."

Kamryn frowns.

"How fast and for how long can you walk, run? Go without food? Water? Sex? Sleep? What are your actual limitations, in detail? Amira, same questions. We need to know, if you're coming with us."

"I..." 

She looks over at William, then shakes her head. 

"I don't need food or water or sex or sleep. I can walk and run like a human - I do tire and need rest, but that's different from needing sleep."

"I'm human, though in good shape for one."

"Humans vary quite a lot, you know."

When it comes to endurance specifically, Kamryn is the least human of the group, but she does know approximately what 'human endurance' entails, obviously. 

"That really sounds like Amira is going to slow us down more than you will, Lily, unless she rides inside Lygos or Talance."

"I don't know anything about the wilds, though. And there are - creatures, out there..." 

"I would prefer not to ride inside Lygos or Talance."

Kamryn doesn't bother to conceal a flash of mild contempt direct at Amira.

"We don't know much about what sorts of creatures live west of here but nothing in the Grey managed to challenge us. And nothing will be able to hurt you if you're riding inside, Lily. Amira, do you know? What the most dangerous things we might run into are? It sounded like the Blackthorn Empire is going to be our biggest obstacle, not wild life."

"It's Wastes all the way west till you reach the Consumed. Mostly bandits and wolves, along with giant insects. There are some rare tentacled creatures, but... nothing stands out in my mind, most of them are very rare."

"I would rather not go on a dangerous quest where I'll have to live in a cramped space unable to control my own motions for most of the day for several weeks."

"It's your decision," Kamryn says to Lily, gently.

To Amira, "We walk for six days and nights, then camp and rest for one, usually. Do you have your own way to keep up with that pace?"

"No, I don't."

"What do you suggest, then."

"The balance says I should shut up and ride in Lygos, to be frank. It's... not ideal by any stretch, but it's the best option we have." 

She looks at Lily. "As for my apprentice... We should find someone to escort her south, to Relvos or further. There she'll be safe... Or safer, at least."

Lygos says something brash and cheerful.

"Do you know someone who Lily would rather go with?"

Amira sighs. "Of course."

She looks over at Lily. "I don't know anyone in particular, but we can find someone with a good reputation who won't ask questions. The Adventurer's Guild is good at that kind of thing." 

"Do I get a choice, here?"

"You always get a choice. I'm just doing the best I can for you with what I have."
