... don't... Dirty the car? So, don't stand on the floor? Don't sit down, in the seats provided?

When someone makes an unreasonable request, it is an attempt to assert dominance over you, and under those circumstances you either submit to their authority or deliberately violate their command for the purpose of demonstrating your own freedom.

She sits back, stretches back, puts her boots up somewhere there isn't candy to worry about wrecking (you don't destroy your teammates food to make a point about someone else) and says "So, what's this tipping thing? I've never heard of it."

The driver rolls his eyes about Alida's behavior.

"Tipping is when you give people who work for you money for good service."

Right, like splitting the finds with your gang. "So King Ben tips you, got it. Anyone else you work for a student at Auradon?"

"Everyone who rides in the car is supposed to tip me five dollars or so," he says, clearly not expecting this to happen.

"Isle's broke, limo driver man. We've got zero dollars between us."

"You know, I did kind of expect that."

Alida will keep her feet up, keep eating candy, and try to learn everything she can about this fascinating world (that was her birthright until it was unjustly stolen from her) out the windows.

This is going to go horribly wrong, isn't it.

Well, until it does, Bern can eat candy.

Really pretty scenery, though.

When the limo arrives at its destination and they get out, they are greeted by a sixteen-year-old boy with a gold crown on his head and a huge smile.

"Hello! I'm King Ben."

And now she knows who to kill.

"Ben," she says (because if she shows deference it will damage her prospects as gang leader, and because there is no way she can be diplomatic enough to make up for Wei Wuxian). "Alida Gustavsdotter." Does he have any bodyguards or is he just... that... dumb... "You're the one who picked us?" You're the one who screwed up picking so badly you got me and Wei Wuxian?

(And, at the same time, her scan of him:

- No armor, wearing a suit, adds bulk but not enough bulk for anything that can stop a spear

- Might have a knife against his shin or behind his shoulderblades but no weapons available

- Doesn't move like a fighter, no defensive stance at all

- Acts like a tiny baby who has never learned anything, or, like, he's with his gang and they're all people he really really trusts

- Sending off bizarre and confusing status signals; showing deference to everyone, thinks of himself as mildly oppressed / lower-status than some people, also clearly has the power to make decisions, clearly safe, ???)

- No missing teeth, no yellow teeth, smiling like there's not a care in the world

- Obvious target for the first blow is the throat, but frankly he's open everywhere, how is this man still alive

- Conclusion: Powerful magical protection from a source he owes deference to, possibly a parent, obvious possibility Fairy Godmother since she's the one who raised the ward. Find source of magic, eliminate or steal source of magic, then he's helpless.)

Huh, really? He's seen people talking about this guy on TVs in the background sometimes.

... Well. Hey. "King Ben," he says, with a brief duck of the head.

(Bern is actually huge, which does not come up much because of how he sort of hunches to make himself seem smaller, but even as underfed as he is he's really tall.)

"It's nice to meet you!" Tetley chirps. "I'm Tetley."

"Hello, Your Royal Fuckwittedness," Wei Wuxian says.

(Despite having eaten a fourth of the candy, he has his own stock of candy, because he glared at Bern until Bern coughed up.)

He looks started at what Wei Wuxian said for a moment, and then laughs. "I wanted to personally welcome you guys to Auradon."

There is really not any appropriate answer to this. Either this is a suicide attempt, or he is warded or he is a unthinkable alien. She's betting on the second.

"... For what reason?" What actual sequence of thoughts went through this person's brain to make him think that this decision would not be immediate suicide? She is trying to construct a human being who would do this and failing.

"Well, it is my dad's fault you were there, which is wrong and it shouldn't have happened and I'm sorry."

WHAT THE FUCK WHY

IS HE SHOWING DEFERENCE TO THEM

WHAT IS THIS THIS MAKES NO -

- She has elaborate systems for reading people and these elaborate systems are all malfunctioning why would he say this why would he do this -

- What the fuck does he want to cooperate with her how is he that insane -

"You know," she says, very softly, in the voice of someone who is really considering murder as a solution to all of her problems, "'Sorry' is an interesting word. So is 'wrong', you hear them so little, on the Isle. Perhaps you could explain in a little more detail what you mean?"

(get back of the knife, when she goes for her dagger he's going to have to go for his - someone's going to start dancing any minute, he just knows it -)

Tetley edges away and tres to look nonthreatening.

Wei Wuxian is known as a lunatic, because a lunatic is a useful sort of reputation to have on the Isle; and it's true that he doesn't think much when someone insults Jiang Cheng or Yanli, he just goes for his knife.

He has no intention of attacking the fucking King of Auradon. That seems like the sort of decision that winds up with you being dead.

He's close to Alida; he can disarm her before she attacks.
