Her perception is pulled from her body, in a sensation sort of like falling asleep.

She is in a place that isn't a place, exactly; it doesn't sufficiently exist to be a place. But it isn't dark and touchable like the Void; there simply isn't anything there to perceive, except Bella herself and the woman sitting opposite.

She looks a lot like Lucy. Older, and winged and feathered, and serene in her self-confidence, but still completely recognizable.

"Hello. Sorry for the disorientation, but it's easier to talk to you like this in actual words."

"- I sure hope Professor Agrippa was right about there not being any mals around, I would be a sitting plate of foie gras. Hello, nice to meet you, dig the wings, witches are cool, Lucy's a pal, while I'm here do you happen to know if I have an awesome doppelganger who is hiding or five years old or something?"

"Five years old...no. But...hm, it depends on how doppelganger-y doppelgangers have to be; you cast a Fate shadow awfully like that of a witch who is already my warlock. But she doesn't look like you."

"And Kanimir hasn't got wings and a faceful of dripping mascara, so, uh, maybe? What's a Fate shadow?"

"It's a sort of--Divination thing, sort of? A...shape formed by the space of potential futures you exist in. I can't use it to dictionary-attack someone; I can't see anything that would only happen under specific circumstances. But there isn't any future where you don't do something really big, and a specific kind of big, so you cast a sort of--shadow of bigness."

"...and this isn't commonplace enough that there are fifty potential doppelgangers who don't look like me but are very ambitious running around?"

"There are other people who have shadows of bigness, but like I said about it being a specific kind of big, your shadows are remarkably similar. Like...hm. Out of all the problems you're likely to do something big about, you're both higher than average at dealing with the Masquerade among people-with-bigness specifically, but lower than average specifically out of the set of people who consider the Masquerade to be a problem. You're also both exceptionally high in likelihood to end up Queen of a new, highly functional magical colony."

"I did say I wanted to run Mars not long ago! - I'm perhaps less likely among people who consider the Masquerade a problem because of the protective ignorance factor but I don't see where a witch me would have come by this opinion already, is that maybe dependent on her learning about mals or something?"

"--No, it's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of--there's some skill or perspective that someone else has that she doesn't that makes them likelier to succeed before she does, if anyone succeeds at all. I don't know what that is, but that's the kind of thing I meant."

"Huh. Well, I wish whoever has that skill or perspective luck, I guess. What else can you tell me about her, maybe I have a better angle on noticing resonance that isn't shadow-y?"

"Um...she hasn't actually given me consent to give out her personal information to third parties, even third parties who might be her. I don't want to violate her privacy. I can ask her to come get involved with all this, that would probably happen eventually anyway but no reason not to introduce you...but this is taking much less time sidereal than it is in here, you won't even have time to fall over before you emerge."

"Oh! I'm time-dilated foie gras! Cool."

"You would likely cease to be foie gras before anything succeeded at nibbling on you. --Although you're surrounded by powerful enough witches, I imagine even if you did go insensate, the adults would be able to protect you if anything was there to be tempted by your helplessness."

"One can hope but we know how this works out for kids with untenable disabilities growing up in enclaves. Anyway, I will be delighted to meet her but I can wait if I am time dilated."

"You are time dilated. Now, you wanted to be a witch, right?"

"Unless there are downsides I do not know about!"

"Not exactly a downside but I'd be lying if I said there were no strings attached; this is, strictly speaking, something I have the ability to do for my followers. What that means in practice is that you have to be willing to pay me lip-service if anyone asks. Uh, most gods are pickier than that but I do not have the very highest opinion of most gods."

"Like I said, you seem cool, and Lucy's a pal! Are you pretty thoroughly Lucy With Divine Oomph?"

"Divine oomph and less trauma. I never had to deal with the Scholomance's zero-sum socio-economic situation; I never experienced any pressure to be anything but the kindest, most generous person I wanted to be. She's starting to heal from that, though, the witch thing is helping."

"The Scholomance is a bitch and then you die anyway most of the time, yeah. I am willing to be like 'rah Lucasta' if asked by whatever entity audits warlock relationships."

"Awesome. --I can only make you a warlock, incidentally, but that does mean you get a variety of excellent magical swag!"

"I might have gone for sorcery if I had any which option but maybe that's the trauma and wanting to set things on fire real hard talking. Warlock's fine."

"You may not be able to set things on fire as hard as if you were a sorceress but you can still set things on fire pretty hard if you want. --I also can't make you any species but Neutral, human--it's not actually categorically impossible to switch species but I don't, actually, know for sure that that wouldn't do something to your wizardness, and so don't recommend it. But you can still get a fire witch-affinity if you want; I can offer you a Cosmic pearl; soaking one in water makes the water a rank-four potion ingredient and being soulbonded to one gives you a bonus witch-affinity."

"I am fine with being the species that I am. And I don't know that I'd go specifically for fire out of all the options but a cosmic pearl does sound nice to have."

"It's not the biggest-ticket item I have to offer, if an extra witch-affinity isn't your highest priority; I can't give you much else if I give you one, but I do have some Lifeweaving magic talismans. A magic talisman lets you use up to rank five of a given magical discipline without having to actually learn it the ordinary way, and Lifeweaving you can't learn without consuming a Flower of Life, which I don't actually know where to find any of. Lifeweaving magic talismans are really good, it took me so much wrangling and favors to be able to start producing them. --Anyway, I don't have a lot of them even so, but you can have one if you want."
