"Oh, good. I wasn't sure how these things worked, here. --I'm still not, but I'll trust you on that point." 

"Wizards are not normally blue or winged but also our masquerade isn't enforced. Also the front organization is something about insurance for international shipping of construction materials, they don't get a lot of drop-ins."

"I'm not sure your masquerade not being enforced is better, if being let in on it subjects one to giant spiders and goo made of people!"

"Well, generally they don't believe it if they see something."

"And it's not enforced with, like, death or whatever, but most people find it really hard to do a spell they've had fail because a mundie was expecting them to be doing sleight of hand and staring right at them, so we do avoid it for our sakes as well as theirs."

"--Like, in perpetuity? The spell is permanently futzed?"

"Depends how you psych yourself up about it, magic's about expectation and intent and belief and stuff."

"--Huh. Belief definitely matters to witches, but not to that extent."

"To what extent, then?"

"Well, like--two witches brewing the same potion recipe with different perspectives on it are likely to end up with slightly different resulting potions, and suppoedly having a consensus reality on Earth is metaphysically important so the planar hypersphere doesn't just collapse, and there's magic you can only do if you have the right intent, like, no matter what I did with my mana I couldn't make a magical compact if I didn't really intend at the moment to follow through--there's contingencies about what happen when those get broken, but they're the result of people changing their minds or being really good at self-deception. And people with lower openness to experience are, like, way less likely to go through a natural awakening."

"Openness to experience?"

"Uh, keeping an open mind, being willing to entertain ideas outside one's Overton Window, liking to try new things."

"That's specifically a factor among people on the other side of the Masquerade," Katarzyna clarifies. "So far as we can tell it's not an issue among people who manage to have a natural awakening despite being on this side."

Bella reappears...

...accompanied by her mother, who holds out two phones but doesn't look sure who they're for.

Caio and Aadhya snap them up.

“Hi, you must be Bella’s mom. Sorry our dimension diverted her.”

"It didn't sound like it was your fault at all, though it was very..." She's hugging Bella pretty hard and Bella's letting her.

“It sounds very! I don’t think it was my fault but it still sucks that very.”

Caio has reached his parents and is explaining to them in rapid Portuguese.

Aadhya's aren't picking up. "I'm worried that they might have silenced their phones or just don't recognize the number."

"Where are they likely to be?"

"My house - it's in New Jersey -" She will try to Send an image.

The first couple of images are sufficiently out-of-date that they don't work but the third one goes.
