"That's the gorgon?"

Nod. "She has some experiments going about sedating them but taking them out of commission is not optional."

"No, yeah, if they go around murdering people you do what you've gotta do. Put them in front of Netflix or something I guess. Why do they want to hunt witches?"

"I'm given to understand motivations vary but I've never talked to one."

"Yeah I just thought they might have a manifesto or someone might have been able to spy on their recruitment process or something."

"The organization is a coalition of multiple interests and doesn't have a collective manifesto."

"Huh."

"'You hate witches! I hate witches! Let's pool resources to hate witches together!' I would mock them more if it weren't for the fact that they did, somehow, find or create a ritual better than anyone else's immortality so far."

"And that's not witchcraft, it's - what?"

"I don't know what to call it, but there are magic things that aren't witches. Demons and Celestials and deities and golems and various forms of undead and so on. Witches are a specific thing, even if they're the most common kind of magical person."

"But witches can also be all different species... what species are the witch-hunters?"

"I think they mostly start out as humans." 

"And then turn into stuff? How do you turn into stuff without awakening as a witch?"

"Being undead doesn't result in becoming a witch; witches can become liches, which are sort of undead, but becoming undead is something that's done to you and does not result in being a witch. I don't know the specifics of how they do it."

"So these are zombie witch hunters, amazing. Do they have their own masquerade?"

"There's just one masquerade for everyone. Unless you're not from a different plane after all."

"I guess it would be sort of hard for, specifically, zombies, to rally mundies on a witch hunt."

"Anyone who tries to break the masquerade gets landed on hard."

"What by?"

"Gods, mostly. --They're not just being assholes. Unless there's another level of systematic misdirection going on, which is plausible, but assuming everything is on the level, the material plane is a sort of capstone in the local arrangement of planes, and a solid consensus reality is metaphysically important to prevent everything from going to pieces."

"The solid consensus reality can't be 'there are witches'?"

"I don't know everything there is to know about the metaphysical importance of the masquerade, because you have to put your own oxygen mask on first and I have more urgent Mephistopheles-related problems. But I do know that while the current consensus isn't the only viable one, causing a deliberate shift in consensus reality is supposed to be extremely dangerous."

"Gotcha."
