“It was a bug, we have an earth-mover, it’s all good,” Jaromira says lightly. “You have a name for it?”

"Most mals have names. Anybody gonna be ticked if I want the parts?"

“I’m good, I already got the silk for Natalia’s babies,” the girl with the tarantula says happily.

”I have dibs on the actual physical silk it extruded before it died, but you can have the corpse if you want,” says the girl on the other side of Jaromira. She lifts a hand, and the earth disgorges the parts of the spider that were embedded. 

“What’s a ‘mal?’” Jaromira asks.

"Maleficaria. Monsters that eat mana."

“Eat mana qua mana?”

"I mean, they'll eat people to get at it. But I heard something was chewing on some Witch Kisses somebody'd buried."

“And as far as you’re concerned this is a big category?”

“Both they and the mals come from another plane.”

“—Huh. I’ve never been to Atlanta. How many siblings did she have?”

"Bella says four? Twin brother, two little sisters and a little brother."

“Well, I only have sisters but otherwise that matches. Katarzyna, Tamsen, Sarah, Robin…Katarzyna and whichever other one was a boy wouldn’t match, I suppose.”

"Bella says Kanimir, Didyme, Sarah, Robin. And that Didyme named herself."

"--Okay, I guess Robin's pretty gender-neutral, if it's her who's a boy there that makes sense." She doesn't comment on the Didyme thing; there's an obvious reason, when one might as likely as not have a Y chromosome, why a girl might name herself, and it really isn't any of her business. "How very odd." 

A shadow passes briefly overhead before another girl looking very similar to Jaromira, with their runny-mascara faces and their black wings, folds said wings and drops to the ground. 

"Hello." 

"Hi. - Bella's the one who's friends with Kanimir, I don't really know how to check."

"Understood. Hello, Eliza, will you tell your boyfriend I've mastered the hekyll rune and am interested in trading mint time for needle time." 

"--Oh wow, nice! You can have as much time with the needles as you need if you do us, to." 

"Acceptable." 

"Is mint time very likely to matter now that we're going to be making wizard style storage?"

"--Wizard style storage?"

"Wizard style storage!" says Bella as she strolls onto the scene. "We don't mint Kisses; instead we make artifacts that can store and dispense mana in a more liquid fashion, and it's been tested and found to work for witches. The kind we can make ourselves is not all that good by our standards but I think it beats spending six minutes per Kiss."

"Spending six minutes per kiss can be done without a mint. What the mint does is lets you upgrade a chest full of coins into the next denomination up, in those same six minutes, storing vastly more mana at once. You must be Bella."
