As they pass other students, it becomes clear that 

A) The gender disparity is at least as great as advertised; Johann isn't literally the only boy around but there are only a small handful identifiable as such, one of whom does not appear to have finished puberty.

B) Almost everyone is really pretty. There are a couple of people who are dramatically ugly instead, but almost nobody is in the middle of the bell curve. 

"The gender balance has come up already but - are there like, cosmetic spells in common circulation, or -"

"You get to redesign your face when you awaken, actually. People mostly stay recognizable insofar as species changes allow, but unless you end up with the complication that makes you look horrible almost everyone at least cleans up their complexion and so on."

"Huh, cool. I kind of would have expected a face redesign people got the unexpected opportunity to do to have more, uh, artistic gaps, but everyone looks lovely."

"Gaps?"

"I would expect most people abruptly charged with designing a face to do it badly. Like, most people can't draw."

"Well, it's easier to imagine something pretty than to draw it, and you don't have to physically represent your new face in any way."

"And the results do speak for themselves. The complicationed ones are stuck that way?"

"Complications are sticky. You can wear a very convincing mask, but if you just shapeshift into something else the something else is also like that."

"Gosh. Well, that's also something we might be able to finagle our way around, though it does not seem urgent."

"It's not the worst complication if we were going to try to address the set." 

"Do I wanna know?"

"There's one that attracts the attention of one of a group of very persistent, very immortal witch hunters."

"...like, they'll kill any witches but those ones are specifically easy to find, or they prefer to kill only that subset?"

"They'll kill any witches but these ones have permanent neon arrows pointed at them."

"What makes the witch hunters too powerful for witches to kill them back?"

"Nobody has found a way to break their immortality; even things that usually manage to induce True Death--to interrupt the resurrection mechanisms of Elves and Wulongs and so on--still leave them respawning on the next new moon."

"And they can't be imprisoned?"

"They can. They're still much worse than being ugly."
