"Uni????"

Rosita is more than happy to let her parents explain for a change that not uni. She can provide painkiller dosing information, and note that Vivian seems to be doing a waaaaay better job than most people with broken ribs do of taking deep breaths and coughing whenever she needs to but if that changes it's bad for her lungs, and ask where they should send the charts to so the family doctor can have copies, et cetera.

"...darling you're in no state to attend university but we're going to take you somewhere you can rest a bit, okay?"

Vi's dad pulls out his phone to note down information about painkillers and lungs. "Uh, does your software talk nicely to Irish software....? Actually I don't know, is taking her on a plane a bad idea? We can drive her down to Philly and that might be the good compromise, but -" he glances hesitantly at Kathleen - "you know, she's worried, you know how mums are but what's going to be the safest option?"

Vivian shakes her head vehemently at her mum. "Uni!"

But sure she'll take getting let out of restraints if it means she can make a bolt for the bathroom. (At this point she's long past the point where it actually feels much like she's desperate for the bathroom, and into the area of undifferentiated and sharp stomach pain, but she remembers wanting to use the bathroom very badly.)

(She's unsteady on her feet, but nowhere near as unsteady as you might expect for someone as badly concussed as she seems to be.)

"If they're using any system that takes .med files we - oh that's not safe with a recent head injury can you see if she'll tolerate you going with her, she wouldn't let any nurse or her friend but she also won't use the bedpan and I'm worried about her bladder -"

ENTHUSIASTIC DOOR SLAMMING

"Well, I suppose that answers that question," Vi's dad offers good-humouredly. "I don't know if our Irish doctors do .med files but the ones in Philly definitely should if they're standard... I can call and ask if that's the right-"

"But we talked about this. We're not going to Philly."

"We did say Viv herself might want to have some input, though, right?"

"Why would she not want to come home?" Vi's mom objects, but in a resigned mutter that communicates that she does understand that saying this a fifty-first time is not more likely to convince people than saying it the first fifty times.

"Vi baby are you alright in there?"

"If she won't answer at all I have to open the door," says Rosita apologetically, "in case she's fallen. Technically I shouldn't be letting her have the door closed at all but if she got a bladder infection that can also cause confusion and we wouldn't notice."

"Alone alone alone!"

"Why wouldn't you notice? I mean surely you have a scan or something for that?"

"I mean we wouldn't notice if she got more confused. But separately, we can test her urine but getting a clean catch under these circumstances would be very upsetting for her."

Vivian will take quite a while in the bathroom, not just because she is taking one of the most satisfying shits of her life, but also because she doesn't see any particular reason she should leave. The toilet is nice. It's less nice when she can't scroll memes but it's definitely nicer than the room outside, which contains kidnappers and restraints and FOR SOME REASON HER PARENTS. She is not prepared to talk to her mother about whether she's met any nice boys at school, nor about her grades, nor about whether she wants to help out on the farm.

But also this is one of the most satisfying shits of her entire life.

"Well I'm sure she won't get a bladder infection if she's home eating her mum's cooking."

"....does eating healthy help with bladder infections?"

"...people sometimes say this about cranberries in particular but I can't recommend that as the only thing you do about one."

"Cranberries? Not - good hearty recovery foods? I make her soup and shepherd's pie when she's sick. She usually just eats fancy salads and things... I'm sure it's not good for her."

"Cranberry?" comes a hopeful call from behind the bathroom door.

"We haven't got any obvious nutrition problems on her chart - would you like a cranberry juice, Vivian?"

"Cranberry!" Vivian enthuses from behind the door, but there's no sign of any plans to exit the bathroom.

"Cranberry please," her mother corrects in a mutter. Then she does at least look suitably embarrassed about it.
