Marshmallow bar is an actual option? "Yes!"

Bruna has done Sacred Passenger Duties on enough long roadtrips that she knows the drill here! She rips open the wrapper of the marshmallow bar and slides it a third of the way out of the packaging, so that there's enough plastic to hold and also enough bar to get teeth into without looking, then passes it right-side-up to Vivi and makes sure she has hold of it before she lets go.

"I don't understand why you like these things. I tried one, they're gooey," she comments as she dusts a maybe-imaginary crumb off her shirt. "Like, the complete opposite of a satisfying energy bar texture. But not gooey enough to be a candy bar instead."

In amongst all the awfulness and confusion, Vi is convinced that this marshmallow bar is a miracle.

By complete coincidence, as far as she can tell, Bruna is here. At the hospital. On the same day that she got hit by a car and came down with a mysterious stupidity disease and also got assaulted twice and missed Cryptography and wasn't allowed to go to the grocery store and - wow, the number of different awful things that have happened today is insane, the odds of them all happening on the same day must be minuscule - honestly she was beginning to wonder if the explanation was that she died and went to hell. And yet Bruna is here! And for some absurd, miraculous, wonderful, the-world-is-forgiven-its-horrors reason, Bruna just happens to have Vi's favourite snack with her.

The sugar tastes absolutely incredible right now. Vi has no idea what's making it taste better than normal, but it's ridiculously good. She doesn't even care that Bruna is talking bullshit. "Sugar," she offers as a counterargument.

It is fair to prefer a marshmallow bar to a dry turkey sandwich from the hospital kitchen, that's really very normal.

"Well, if it's sugar you're looking for then the good news is the store was totally out of diet soda."

Is that good news? That doesn't sound like good news or bad news. Vi mostly doesn't care what the store has in stock or doesn't have in stock if she's not allowed to go to the store. She said sugar because she was explaining why marshmallow bars were good, and she doesn't think the taste of marshmallow bars is improved by a local store being out of diet soda?

She is so fucking stupid and she hates it but at least Bruna is someone she's used to being stupid in front of. Bruna has seen her struggling with homework. Bruna doesn't even get mad when Vi wants to play Duolingo at 5am with the volume on. "Clarify?"

She pops the cap on the full-sugar 7up from her pocket and offers it to Vivian. "Sorry it's kinda warm. Got here as fast as I could."

There has got to be some sort of correspondence between the random things Bruna is saying and the random things that are happening. Vi just can't figure out what the hell it might be.

She's trying, running through test possibilities in her head, checking different angles to see if one makes things add up. But they just don't. The store is out of diet soda and therefore this drink is warm? Bruna got here as fast as she could and therefore marshmallow bars are worse than energy bars? The store was out of diet soda and that's why Bruna had to go to hospital? Marshmallow bars have a bad texture and that's why the drink is warm? Bruna had to rush to hospital and this impacted global soda supply chains?

She's really stupid right now. She hates it so much, but it's the reality; something awful has happened to her, and stolen all her best qualities - her easy wit, her keen eye, her ability to puzzle things out, all the things she takes pride in - and she just has to pray things will get better as mysteriously as they went to shit. But Bruna is smart. If Vi can explain the situation enough that Bruna can solve it, she's set. The only problem is figuring out how the hell to explain to Bruna that Vi is having a sudden attack of Random Awful Nonsense when she can barely string two words together.

"Irrelevant," she tries, hesitatingly. "No?"

"Hydration is not irrelevant. You gotta drink enough hydration, it's in the roommate pact."

Vivian furrows her brow for a long few seconds, trying to figure this one out, and: Oh! The 7up is being held out to her? Bruna is trying to put it in her hand? Maybe she's supposed to drink it?

Always better to double check though. "Mine?"

"That's why I'm handing it to you, yeah, it's for you." Bruna will help Vivian wrap her fingers around the can if that's too hard for her right now.

Well she wasn't just going to assume that! She can't just go around assuming everyone who opens a soda can in her vicinity is trying to give it to her! Most soda cans held by other people will not be relevant to her hydration options!

"Clarify," she grumbles.

Feeling put-upon won't stop her from draining the entire thing once it's in her hand though.

This is promising so far! "Vivian, if I undo the rest of the cuffs can you stay in bed till I'm ready to help you to the bathroom?"

Bruna gives Vivian a little eyebrow curl that means: Please Vivian have the good sense to say whatever will successfully get them to take the cuffs off, and not whatever she really wants to say because she's mad?

Well she theoretically is capable of remaining in bed. Whether she will actually do that... isn't the question she was asked and doesn't seem relevant. "Yes."

If someone tries to help her go to the bathroom she will bite them. Some things are supposed to be private, and peeing is a fairly central example. How on Earth to express that in a single word, though? She does kind of need to pee after draining all of those apple juices...

People who have this many injuries absolutely need help to go to the bathroom or they are a fall risk. But Daphne is going to tentatively undo cuffs now. She is SO ready to yell for backup if Vivian takes a swing at her or tries to go ruin the floor's statistics on patients falling down again.

"Here!" Bruna extracts the bag of apple chips from her satchel and offers them to Vivian as a stay-in-bed-please gesture. "Sorry if they're a bit crushed but I got the kind you like." Bruna is personally mystified by why you would want sugar and cinnamon and vanilla nonsense ruining your perfectly good apples, but the important thing is to distract Vivian from everything being terrible and sugar is famously effective for that sort of thing.

Why would she get out of bed when there are apple chips right here? Om nom nom apple chips. It's very mysterious why swallowing hurts.

So far, success. Daphne charts the eventuality.

Bruna is so happy the apple chips are keeping Vivian in bed. She is so winning at channelling her mom. Polite society crumbles beneath the force of her winning smile and willingness to take extensive notes on a clipboard.

"So how'd you get hit by a car?"

"Uh...."

Vivian wracks her brain for anything that could explain getting hit by a car. Her best guess is that some kind of terrible alien force is causing a long string of incredibly horrible coincidences to happen to her today, but she just can't make any particular explanation add up.

"Confused?"

"You're confused by the question, or you got hit because you were confused, or you're confused how it happened - wait," Bruna glances over at the nurse, "am I making her think too hard?"

"No," Vi says as emphatically as she can, because she needs all the help she can possibly get in becoming less confused. Why would there even be such a thing as thinking too hard?

"It's really better if she'll rest but it is actually impossible to force people to do that without prescriptions she does not have right now," says Daphne. "A conversation that isn't about anything too hard is - okay."

Bruna briefly wonders if it's a journalistic ethics issue if she might write up 'a student got hit by a car, what even is this, the 70s' for the student newspaper. On the one hand Vi would be totally in favour. On the other hand the nurses would definitely not let Vi talk to a journalist in her current state. This sounds like a question she can pick such a fun fight with a professor about later.

"Confusing question?" she prompts Vivian.
