Say what you will about Ellie, but she does not actually believe that exploding a power plant is an appropriate response to having been sold into slavery.  Especially not when that's where the slaves are, but also in general!  So when she sees the array, and evaluates how dangerous it is and that it can only be taken safely apart from the middle, she takes a deep breath and steps in to start plucking out the emeralds.
