Cam sings it. "You've been avoiding the children's media?"

"More like I put that genre on when I am especially inclined to dissociate really hard."

"I've been told they can in theory also include numbers or punctuation, or non-Anglophone alphabets although admittedly not ones for - what were your native languages, again, Kib -"

"The one that's just called 'the common'. I learned the others I nonmagically picked up intentionally."

"Wasn't there also an H one - anyway, yeah, no Soups in those, if they're even alphabetic at all."

Kib has learned to flip people off! He does this.

"Mea culpa.  Cam, do you want that magic system explanation?  It comes with a carrot."

"Uh, sure, I love magic systems and carrots, terms and conditions apply."

"It's an eyescreen!  One of the suitors had the idea that we should let you take notes unobtrusively rather than have you try and memorize twenty-eight contestants in one night.  Kib, should we give you one as well?"

"Insert catchphrase."

"Mmhm.  Who wants to go first?  It's not sparkleable."

"Meaning, what, eyeball surgery?"

"The installation's still magic, but it's touch range."

"Meaning I should learn to put in contacts real quick?"

"Not even.  Aember?"  Two claps.

Someone in a ponytail and a capelet appears and offers a handshake halfway between the Bells.

...shake.

She grasps his hand and holds it.  "Close your eyes?"

Eyes close.

She half-hums two lines of a song to herself, with a level of effort which would be confusing in one way if it were part of the magic and confusing in another way if it weren't.  Maybe only the tune has to be present and the performance doesn't matter?  Or maybe it's a mnemonic or something.  She lets go.  "Okay!"

When Cam opens his eyes, there's a message down in the bottom right corner of - not his vision; it stays in the same spot in physical space when he moves his eyes, and it hides itself when he blinks - "Alternate winking to initialize tutorial."  Aember offers a hand to Kib while he parses that.

"It doesn't hurt or anything," Cam offers.

"They have not in recent years wanted that kind of reaction out of me." Hand.

Wink wink.

The humming happens again with Kib, although it resolves to a different implied chord at the end.  Aember leaves.

It takes a while to tutorialize Cam, but basically he now has an AR HUD which he can turn on or off.  It's possible to interface with it exclusively via eye movements, though that's kind of laborious.  It informs him that if he knows any of this list of sign languages he can use those, but in practice the thing he's probably going to be using most is finger gestures.  These can involve tapping on AR objects around him if he wants, but for a less obtrusive option he can do these gestures pretty much wherever his hand happens to be.  Here's how to type in this system.

Once he's got the basics down, it prompts him to select a person and fill in their name, and then walks him through how to set that and other information to come up when approaching them, as well as how to connect more detailed notes to them that can be expanded when selected.  Same works for object or places, or he can set reminders to come up at a specific time (subjective duration or, if he has internets connection, at certain timestamps).

That's pretty neat. "Thanks. Is the magic system explanation on this system somewhere?"

"Sending it presently."  And with an understated gesture, very small, very tight, Cam gets a notification.  "You want a copy, Kib?  I'm not expecting commentary on it."
