Evelyn, Thea and tyrians in Sunnyverse

Time passes, quite uneventfully. Tutoring goes fine – Evelyn gets a bit more of an interest in history, and she gets a bit more of an 'in' to the sports crowd.

She's a bit concerned with all the deity-invoking, when it comes to magic. She's even more concerned when she finds out that some of the deities do in fact exist – it's not just part of an incantation – and the reality of the situation sets in.

She drifts away from Cassie a bit, after that, what with her reluctance to do more magic. There are a few basic spells she learns, but anything large-scale… she tries to keep away from that sort of stuff. The idea of helping people, it's definitely important, but – she feels like she could quite easily go off the deep end and really screw herself, and quite a few others, over.

And then it gets to summer. There are a few parties, there's a ton of new gossip about various activities various people did or did not take part in, and Evelyn continues to cement her place in the hierarchy. She gains more enthusiasm for things, there having been no spectacular disasters in a while, and feels a little guilty about – just ignoring the hidden world around them.

Not like she can do anything about it anyway.

And then junior year starts.

Cassie does not cement her place in the hierarchy.

Her breakup with Jackson is explosive, and he gets most of their friends (of which there weren't many to begin with). She keeps up with math, but her other grades start slipping. When summer arrives, she dedicates herself completely to magic. She and Evelyn stay in touch, nominally, but it's mostly the occasional message. Cassie tries to prevent her "vibes" from coming true, but can't.

She messages Evelyn once, before school starts.

devil_wears_euler: I'm transferring to a private school. Public school was a bit too un-enriching. Good luck, though.

snowbreeze: … You too.

snowbreeze: See you around, I guess?

No answer.

Summer comes to an end.

On the first day, there's quite a bit of gossip about a returning student; apparently, he's been recuperating in a hospital in Germany undergoing an experimental procedure.

… Do they have a name?

You know, that Washington kid? The one who was attacked during that horrible dance?

… Josh Washington?

Yeah, him! He's apparently going to be here any minute, it's pretty exciting actually!

… She didn't realize he'd made it. To a hospital.

Well, all of the injured were taken there, but some went directly to the morgue. Anyway, this is good news, not depressing history.

No no, she agrees, this is great news.

In fact, that looks like him now!

He's not alone, either. He has quite a retinue, apparently.

… Oh.

Fuck.

There are a few people surrounding him, actually. Practically a guard. Sam waves at her tentatively.

The others ignore her, and form a barrier between curious students and their friend.

Evelyn waves back at Sam but she can't quite bring herself to smile.

Josh smiles at her, though. He smiles at everyone, and cracks a few jokes, and everyone is so glad he's okay.

She tries not to watch him too carefully.

And then there's someone Evelyn doesn't recognize!

Well, there are a few of them, because new freshmen, but there's someone who's new and looks a bit too old to be a freshman! She is looking around a bit hesitantly.

Evelyn's a bit distracted to go play meet-and-greet right now, but she does note the existence of the new person.

Josh greets the new person! Hello new person!

"First time at Sunnydale High? Well, it's your lucky day: you have the best tour guide our town can offer."

"Oh, hi!" she says. "Yeah, I just moved down from Portland – Thea."

"I'm Josh. I was recovering from a tragic gang-related incident at the winter formal, but I'm all better now. How are you enjoying Sunnydale? The weather must be an improvement."

"The – I – uh, yeah, the weather's a nice change! Summers aren't particularly bad – as a general – but yeah."

"That's good. Enjoy the sun, just remember not to go out at night. We have a pretty early curfew. Everyone sneaks out, but you probably shouldn't."
