"...I'm not gonna charge you for them, Yahontov, you can grab as many pieces as you like."

"...they sell for very high prices. Hard to work with. But good quality."

"Yvette, can you convince him that I'm not trying to, to, to do whatever it is people think I'm doing when I'm not being a cutthroat bargain hunter or something?"

"It would be a good payment for coming down here at all," she points out, reasonably, "and Scorpius needs people that treat him as an actual person and tell him when he's being a dumbass more than he needs favors to buy a bigger chance to stay alive, you know."

Alexei narrows his eyes.

"I get mana from killing mals," Scorpius offers.

And now he widens his eyes.

"So, yeah, let's pretend I already collected payment and you can just take the expensive materials and do your artificing with them and have a lark."

"Okay."

He gets to collecting, then, he supposes.

And to Yvette: "Did you do it? I'm going to be really irritated with these spiders if they ruined your project."

"What are you going to do, kill them twice? Go down to graduation hall early to find and hunt down their families?" she snorts, but yes, fine, she'll get to pulling her blade out of the concoction it was quenched in and inspecting it.

It is a black so deep it looks a bit like it eats light itself. Normally, this is where it'd need to be finished; sanding it and sharpening it, for sure, maybe trying to make up for any warping that might have happened in the temper if one's particularly unlucky, but. ... This is clearly a magic blade. It does not need sanding, and it does not need polishing. It possibly doesn't even need sharpening, but she's sure as hell not going to test that and give it a taste for its wielder's blood right out of the gate. It needs a handle, and she will make one for it, but otherwise, it looks perfectly deadly. Also, kind of pretty.

"Awww, look at you," she says, cooing over it like it's a child, "aren't you lovely, a perfect shard of midnight..."

"Oh, she's gorgeous," he breathes, trying not to crowd but looking clearly fascinated.

"I will absolutely need to make a handle just as gorgeous," she agrees. "And a sheath! You are already so pretty, and you deserve to be dressed up to match, don't you, darling."

For now, she'll carefully wrap it up in dark silk that she absolutely packed for this occasion. What? Start off the spoiling early, all right, and she had it going spare from one of her projects from last year.

He hesitates for a second then reaches under his shirt for the dagger he has attached to a harness he wears, to show it to Yvette. It's not magical, it's "just" a dagger, but it's clearly been as loved as it could be; the blade is almost mirrorlike in reflectiveness, and an intricate pattern in the shape of snaking vines is etched onto it. It's sharp enough to suggest frequent sharpenings and clean enough to suggest even more frequent cleaning, perhaps as often as daily. The handle is mother-of-pearl and the guard has a single small black gemstone encrusted onto it.

"I have a sharpening and oiling kit," he says, "and could acquire some choice leather for the sheath, if you'd like."

Alexei's returned from his scavenging trip by now and his breath caught when he saw Yvette's dagger and then caught again when he saw Lake's. Now he's just kind of... hovering. He's not even sure what face he's making, because he has no idea what he's feeling, but he is very very much feeling it very strongly.

"Mmmm, no, I think I need to find the proper leather myself, you do not get to seduce my athame, thank you. And I can get a whetstone and oil easily enough. But I appreciate the offer." She pats her new dagger, fondly. Oh, Alexei hasn't seen her properly yet, has he, she will shuffle the silk out of the way and show her off to the artificer. What a pretty blade!!!!! Without a handle or a sheath yet, but all of the structure is there, which is what really matters!

"You will need to be very careful. That will turn on you, if you are not." Then he looks at Lake. "Yours... hasn't?"

"Of course not. I've had her since I was twelve and I will have her until the day I die if it's up to me."

"...surprising."

"Alexei, I packed silk to wrap her in, and didn't want to pick out any kind of handle or sheath material before she was properly put together! Cut me some credit, here. We will get along fantastically, and if we don't it will be entirely my fault, and I will be heartbroken about it."

"...I know you will."

"He's worried about you."

Was he?

..........was he?

Maybe he was.

How did Lake knowhe didn't know.

He really should not be worried about her. Or care about her. Caring about people is a terrible idea in this school. Therefore He Will Not.

It is such a terrible idea in this school, yeah.

But it's very, very sweet.

She doesn't want to lie to him and say something obviously false like 'I'll be okay,' or something, but. ... But.

"Thank you," she says, very softly, with absolute sincerity, because she doesn't know what else to say to him. Um. Um. ".... Let me know if you need help with the sirenspider bits? I have, you know. Arms. If you'd like help carrying some of them back."

Oh he was third wheeling even harder than he thought he was. Also that recontextualizes a bunch the way she rejected him so hard. Yyyyeah okay um. To be fair to him he didn't know these two were doing a protracted mating dance. It's very subtle. Well, now he feels bad. He... feels worse than he'd expected, actually. Well, than he'd have expected. He thinks.
