He nods and tears spring to his eyes again at the casual affection. He looks away and focuses on not letting them fall.

It wordlessly retrieves a lacy handkerchief and daubs the tears from his eyes.

"Thank you, I know I'm not supposed to cry, it's just -"

He looks away for another moment.

"It's hard sometimes."

"Mine is not to judge you, Kyra. Cry all you like. There's noone else here, and the soundproofing is very good on this train."

Sniffle.

"Thank you."

He looks out the window again.

"It really is very nice, knowing you're inside a cloud like this."

"It seems like what it must be like to sleep."

"Sometimes. Mostly sleeping is bad."

"I wondered why you weren't sleeping away the journey."

"I've never been on such a nice train before. Even if sleeping was good, it would be hard to pass this up."

Whirrrrr. "We are quite proud of it. There aren't many other engines of its class."

"It does seem expensive, yes."

"Not just that! It's able to climb these mountains pulling a full load with no problem at all! Most engines would cower at the grade required, but not this one. It's quite comforting being in the care of a consummate professional."

He flops down on the bench.

"I like this train. And you."

"The feeling's mutual, I'm sure."

As they speak, there's a shift in the quality of the light. The sun breaks through the clouds in a hundred piercing beams and the room bursts into the fullness of a warm, rosy sunset.

He gasps.

Light glints off of fixtures in the room and the floating dust is picked out in exacting precision as each mote is highlighted by a golden beam before returning to shadow.

He abruptly turns to Calypso.

"Do you see things the same way humans do?"

Click, click. "No. I have a broader range of colors I can see, but I do have less dynamic range. I can adjust my optics separately per-eye though, watch."

It dilates one pupil and contracts the other.

"Woah."

He looks briefly nervous, then curious.

"What's the point of that?"

"Convenient when moving between light and shadow. We don't have the same kind of ability to adjust, it's useful to try and avoid tripping in a dark patch on a bright day."

"What other cool things can you do?"

It pauses, then stands to attention and tilts its head back until it faces the ceiling. Its eyes close and its face lights up, projecting swirling patterns onto the glass of the car that are bright enough to be seen in the clouds above.

"Goddesses, that's pretty... can you do hearts?"

Click, click. All the points turn to hearts picked out in pink.
