"Awesome!"

"What are those paper slip things?"

"My world has divination magic. It didn't work for Emily at all but you can try if you want." She offers the bag.

Wei Wuxian is always game to try new things that might go horribly wrong! He draws a slip of paper.

"Time," she tells him, when she sees the symbol. "One of the ones without the element. If you get the other two of those in a row it'll be pretty clear you're not getting it to work right."

He draws two more.

"That's them. It's interesting that it sort of politely warns you it's not working first? When Emily kept going she got weird inappropriate ones, since, like, all it can do is manipulate which ones you draw, it couldn't stop her or anything, but it doesn't just behave like I wrote a bunch of numbers down and you're rummaging through that, it's not just truly random with respect to foreigners."

"Weird! I would have expected it to be random, if it didn't work. How do you make them?"

"These I just wrote down on scraps of paper, and it's not a full set. I have a full set of minted coins of them in my room though, appropriated from the chapel on my estate."

"So it doesn't need to be the full set to work? And you just write down the symbols, you don't have to do anything else? What if someone it doesn't work for makes a set and you try to use it?"

"It doesn't have to be a full set but you need at least two, or it can't be random enough for the divination to insert itself. You can make me a test set if you like..." She writes down a handful of symbols. "Use these, one of them I never get so if I pick it anything but last it's not working."

He immediately pulls out writing implements and paper and begins copying the symbols down.

"Can I see that?" Emily asks of the Nevercold Brass.

Kiri hands it over.

"Interesting," Emily says, as the metal sort of melts out of bar form and begins flowing through elaborate shapes in the air. "It responds mostly normally...it's neat, anyway, even if it doesn't do anything I wasn't expecting in response to my power."

"It's interesting that you're doing that without heating it up."

"Oh, I can do that with anything," she says. She puts her communicator friendship bracelet watch on one wrist while from the other, a steel bracelet loses its intricate detailing and flows off her wrist to bob in the air as a sphere.

"Yeah, it's just neat. Can you melt it?"

"If you mean 'can I heat it until it melts' the answer is yes. If you mean 'can I render it room-temperature but also an actual liquid that other people can interact with as such' then no."

"I meant the first thing, since that's the way I can liquefy things." Is Wei Wuxian done with his symbols yet.

He is! He has gotten out a small dagger and is cutting them apart on the sheet of paper he wrote them on. He passes them to her when he finishes.

She closes her eyes and picks one, two, three, then looks. "This is what I'd expect if it's working."

"What are the odds of that happening by coincidence?"

"Uh -" She does some scratch arithmetic in the air with fire. "One in seven hundred twenty. If what order they're in matters, and they are in the order I expected too given how I stacked the set."

"Oh wow! So the magic is probably in the symbols themselves, not in who makes them--honestly I was expecting them not to do anything at all, but this is why you experiment instead of assuming!"
