" - Okay! Going to bed! Night everyone!" Anathema squeaks, dragging her wife out of the room.

"Don't stay up too late, kids!" Ellie calls from around the corner.

Bellatrix doubles over laughing.

Fay snorts. "I should get to sleep, too," she says, then, with a grin: "But I'd suggest a bit of restraint for begging."

"You're both horrible people."

"Ah, but you love us so."

Kiss. "I really do."

Mmm.

"Shall we repair to our boudoir, mademoiselle?"

"Mmm, yes."

And there they can perhaps pursue a few definitions of the word 'restraint'.

Maybe even a few causes for begging...

Delightful.

The night goes exceptionally well.

For them, at least.

The news the next morning is... Less pleasant.

What happened?

"There was a mass breakout in Azkaban early today," Fay says over the breakfast table. "The Dementors all defected, and the Death Eaters incarcerated there all escaped. One of the guards and one of the Aurors who responded to try to handle the situation were Kissed, as were six non-Death Eater prisoners who refused to follow the Death Eaters. Another three guards and ten prisoners died. None of the Death Eaters were prevented from escaping."

"That's... really not good."

"Extremely."

"I am very tempted to grab Narcissa and go ex-husband hunting."

"Not without me."

"Make a date of it, then."

Firm nod.

"Honestly, I'm less concerned about the Death Eaters from a strategic standpoint than the Dementors - we don't know how to destroy those, and prior to the Ministry's deal with them they were broadly hostile but disorganized."

"How did they manage to negotiate, anyway?"

"Dementors are intelligent. They can't speak human languages, but they can make themselves understood in many magical languages - and a wizard a few centuries ago got their language as a wild talent. He didn't pass it on, but he made an artifact the Ministry can use for translation."

"The deal was that the Dementors would have a population of helpless mages, disproportionately inclined to misery, to feed on without harassment, and could consume the souls of those up for execution. In exchange, they wouldn't attack non-prisoners, and wouldn't allow those prisoners to leave without official permission."

"The negotiations happened one small cluster at a time, but - word of them spread very quickly, and soon Dementor clusters were approaching the Ministry. It's likely they simply hadn't been bothering to coordinate before that, not that they couldn't."

"That's terrifying."

She nods.

"I'll talk to Dumbledore about opening the school early and letting more than just students stay there, especially if things get bad - and about doing intensive anti-Dementor training for students and any interested adults."
