Ellie Potter and the Tiger's Eye
the one where... well, you know
Permalink Mark Unread

As far as Anathema Potter-Canta is concerned, the end of fifth year has been by far the best yet. Her mom seems on the mend, even if Anathema is trying very hard not to think too much about her mom's taste in girlfriends. (Well. Single girlfriend. Bellatrix flirts with Fay a lot but doesn't seem to actually be doing anything about that, unlike how she's hanging off of Elodie.) They thumbed their noses very successfully at Voldemort, and Anathema's pretty sure there's been fallout from that but none of it's hit her, so. The last month of term is peaceful, despite the Transfiguration NEWT McGonagall insists they take trying to murder Anathema personally. (That is possibly a slight exaggeration. They probably passed, at least.) (She barely even notices it when Fudge loses his runoff against Director Bones in a landslide, except with a vague 'good riddance.')

And, most importantly, Anathema has a wife who is the most beautiful and smartest person in the world, and she has a wedding and honeymoon to plan. It's just family and very close friends, nothing big, and Anathema's never cared about social propriety, so the planning isn't as stressful as she usually hears people complaining about. Her mom lets her draw whatever she wants out of the full family vaults to pay for it, not just the little slice accessible to Anathema at her age. They're sticking with the magic beach Elodie recommended for the party and the first bit of the honeymoon, and Anathema wants music and obscenely fancy catered food, a new dress, jewelry - including a custom ring she commissions for Ellie, with as many runic enchantments woven in as a rune carver willing to work with muggle precision tools can carve.

She's having the time of her life.

Her mom's smiling more often, at ease, by the time the wedding date fully rolls around. Anathema wants to hold it at midsummer - she'd started a lot of this before confirming their venue, but the near date still leaves her rushing to get everything ready (money helps dramatically, as does the small size of the wizarding community - things in general aren't too busy). Smuggling her mom into France isn't hard at all. She's floating on cloud nine the whole time they spend planning, staring at her wife every chance she gets with a broad grin on her face.

(They're married.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And soon they're gonna be married on a beach in France. (Ellie maaaay have gotten them matching bikinis in secret. She's planning to surprise Anathema with them when they start the just-them bit of the honeymoon.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Best summer so far.

The beach is so beautiful, in the moments Anathema can tear her eyes from her wife. All of her preparations pay off and more. Her dress takes her own breath away - it isn't a muggle-style wedding dress, so they'll be able to use it on other dates, too, but it's gorgeous and flattering and custom tailored, a soft inner silky layer surrounded by increasingly sheer layers in a dark bloody red with little flecks of black gems. She gets Elodie to help with her hair again in a rush of jitters, lets her mom help select and prepare a flower crown for her, blossoms woven into her braids. Jewelry, too - all of it newly brought by her mom. (It's good luck to have new jewelry for a new household, even if they're not actually moving out.)

Anathema feels - light. Pretty. Like everything's gone right, and she has her wife's eyes on her, and nothing could ever top this -

She keeps Ellie's ring in her pocket all through the festivities, heart in her throat.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie is in dusky green, a full-length skirt and a suit jacket that hugs her curves. She has her hair pulled back with an emerald hairband and a ring carved from ruby in her pocket.

This is the best party.

Permalink Mark Unread

All of Anathema's plans about dancing and dinner and music and all feel so, so much now, she wants to rush off with her wife, but -

This is special. She'd regret it later, she thinks, if she skipped out too early.

Still... She's very happy when night falls, and the party winds down, and she can pull Ellie aside and thank her for being her wife -

"I had this made for you," she whispers, heart in her throat, pulling the ring from her pocket. Its woven silver band is nearly entirely subsumed by dark runes, and each of the small green gems sparkles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh," she says, taking it. "It's beautiful."

She takes the ruby ring out from her pocket and holds it out. "This is for you." The light dances like flame in the depths of its facets.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gosh," she says, taking it as well and sliding it on. "I love it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I love you." Be-ringed kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!!! "Love you too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm so glad I married you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Marrying you was the best decision I've ever made," she says, kissing her wife again.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think we've put in enough of an appearance at this party..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Plenty."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Let's head back to the room where it's nice and quiet."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes her wife's hand. "Lead the way, darling."

Permalink Mark Unread

Off they go.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema splurged on an exceptionally nice blue cottage overlooking the ocean - and French wizards don't seem nearly as trapped in the Middle Ages as British wizards. They've got the best room, with a lovely bay window and a massive comfortable bed and most importantly privacy.

The room is significantly improved, though, once it contains Anathema's wife.

Permalink Mark Unread

Perhaps it could be further improved if they... maybe... take off their clothes?

Permalink Mark Unread

Very carefully. This dress is nice and Anathema's probably even mostly done getting taller, and she wants to save it.

(She'll show the same care with Ellie's clothes, of course.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Quiet bounces.

Permalink Mark Unread

Slow, gentle care... Can't have them wrinkling, too, so she'll want to hang them up...

Permalink Mark Unread

The very instant the hangers leave her hands, Ellie tackles her onto the bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, tumbling, and kisses her wife.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kisses! And pets, and maybe a little more?

Permalink Mark Unread

More and more and more. As much more as Ellie wants.

Permalink Mark Unread

She wants all of her wife.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good.

Anathema is very, very tired and very, very cozy as of the next morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmmm they should just stay in bed forever.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's their honeymoon. That sounds like the whole point, really.

Maybe they can send a Patronus to ask for breakfast in bed if they get desperate, but... She has a wife to snuggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

That sounds like a most excellent plan.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh, distracting wiggles. Breakfast is going to have to wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

Possibly quite a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they can make it for lunch. If they hurry.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm, Anathema might be even more tired and languid then...

Though also increasingly starving.

Permalink Mark Unread

They can have something brought to their room. Ellie will even send the message and answer the door, since she's such a kind and generous wife.

Permalink Mark Unread

As long as she puts something on first. She's Anathema's right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll make a toga out of a towel. It's a bit short, but all the critical bits are covered.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hm... Sufficient.

Permalink Mark Unread

She does a showy little twirl before going to answer the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema giggles (and makes sure her sheets are covering her sufficiently).

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay's brought over a quite nice spread, sufficient for a filling brunch and a few leftover snacks over the day.

(She does look slightly poleaxed when Ellie opens the door in nothing but a short towel, but quickly recovers.)

"Want me to put this anywhere particular?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"On the table just here is fine," she says, giggling a bit. "We'll take it from there."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs a little. "Alright."

"We'll be out at the beach most of the day," she says, "If you two feel like mingling a bit. If not, I can come check on you around dinner?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We may be out, but maybe not."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles as she sets the tray down. "Take as much time as you like."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks. See you later, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"See you."

And she's off, leaving them alone.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie drops her towel and crawls back into bed next to Anathema, floating the first tray over.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs, kissing Ellie, and settles in for brunch.

Permalink Mark Unread

Later in the afternoon, Ellie stretches and declares that she would like a shower.

Permalink Mark Unread

Probably sensible at this point.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema should have a shower too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Together?

Permalink Mark Unread

There's enough room for them both, so...

Permalink Mark Unread

Perfect, then. (Kiss.) Cleanliness is very important, after all.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's next to godliness and all that. But Ellie'd rather be next to a pretty girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not up for worshipping me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only for you as you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "You'd be a better goddess anyways."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The almighty dragon goddess."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Everyone will fall to their knees before you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And I'll eat up young maidens as a sacrifice," she says, playfully snapping at Anathema. "Rawr."

Permalink Mark Unread

She wiggles and laughs. "They'll be lining up eagerly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Come now, I must drag you to my den of watery doom!"

Permalink Mark Unread

Heeee.

She wraps her arms around her most fearsome wife, swooning. "I'm all yours."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes you are." Off to the shower.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best wife.

Permalink Mark Unread

This honeymoon thing is pretty great.

Permalink Mark Unread

Absolutely amazing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Shall they poke their heads out of the room today, before everyone leaves?

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. I'd like to get a chance to say bye and thanks for coming, at least, before people scatter on their own vacations..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Playful push. "Gotta get dressed, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Okay." Kiss.

She dresses casually, of course, just a tank top and shorts. Then off to the beach?

Permalink Mark Unread

After Ellie also throws on a shirt and some shorts, yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

Of course.

She holds Ellie's hand as they head over to their group, waving when they get close.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her mom laughs and waves from where she's leaning against Elodie, apparently reading.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Finally decided to face the day?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We were just waiting for it to tire itself out before swooping in for the kill."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Learning proper hunting techniques, I see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mama Horntail would be proud."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "You're becoming a proper young dragon at last."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Mama Horntail'? Is that what you and that dragon were talking about during the task?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She thought I was a weird stunted baby who wouldn't be able to fly away from danger."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema giggles. "She was a very protective mama." And kisses Ellie's cheeks. "Ellie's now the danger, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Grrr."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only to your enemies, I'd hope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Anathema's sacrifice protects the rest of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "We'll remember her fondly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"For now... I'm not a jealous sacrifice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ominous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Terrifying," she agrees.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm shaking in my boots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're not wearing boots."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm... True."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you're not really shaking at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I could be on the inside. You never know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, I expect you've got little booties fitted out for your kidneys and such."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs and steps up to ruffle Ellie's hair. "That'd be a bit excessive... Especially since I'm not sure I ever could be scared of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I promise not to eat you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile. "I trust you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well. Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Her expression goes very soft, and she brushes some hair behind Ellie's ear.

"I'm proud of who you're growing up to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

She ducks her head and blushes.

Permalink Mark Unread

And to Anathema: "Both of you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema laughs a little, squeezing Ellie's hand. "I like who we are, too." She kisses Ellie's cheek.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We're good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

Then, to her mom and Elodie, since she has been kind of focusing on Fay: "So are you guys still thinking about heading off tomorrow?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The train leaves just after nine. The museums of Paris await." They'll be taking muggle transport to avoid scrutiny of Bellatrix.

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Elodie's going to have to show me every single type. I still haven't made up my mind what I'm most excited about... Though space museums might be pulling ahead right now - seeing what happens if you brew a potion sensitive to moon phases while on the moon sounds hilarious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They don't actually offer day trips, sweetheart."

Permalink Mark Unread

She snickers and kisses Elodie. "I know. Still, I need some grounding in rocket science before inventing my own - spaceship, was it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's the one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go where no mage has gone before."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't forget to take pictures."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll need to buy a nice camera first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't forget to do that too, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll be sure to remember."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Great."

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles and turns back to Elodie mostly.

Permalink Mark Unread

The rest of the evening goes really well. Anathema spends a lot of it talking to the other three - she'll have Ellie to herself for the whole honeymoon after all - and then the next morning they have a companionable breakfast all together that Anathema insists on getting up in time for. Fay leaves a few hours after Elodie and Bellatrix, but, soon enough, they've got the cottage to themselves.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie pulls out a pair of relatively small packages from the bottom of her luggage.

"Now that we're alone..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She thrusts one of the packages at Anathema, blushing a bit. "Open it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She raises an eyebrow and does so.

Permalink Mark Unread

It's a rather skimpy swimsuit, in red. Ellie has its black twin.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and kisses her wife. "I see why you waited."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wanted to keep this for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah." Nuzzle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We should wear them today."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Yeah. We should. The weather's great for it." Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

And change?

Permalink Mark Unread

Change and kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Eeee she looks even better than Ellie was imagining!

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema is a bit stunned at how beautiful Ellie is.

Permalink Mark Unread

They're such a good pair.

Permalink Mark Unread

They really are.

Permalink Mark Unread

Beach?

Permalink Mark Unread

Beach!

Permalink Mark Unread

The best looking couple out today by far.

Permalink Mark Unread

Without a doubt.

Permalink Mark Unread

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses her wife.

Permalink Mark Unread

Best girl.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wiggle!

Permalink Mark Unread

Vacation is a lovely time.

Permalink Mark Unread

It very much is.

They have over a month to spend on their vacation, meeting up again with Fay and Bellatrix and Elodie for each of their birthdays, but otherwise wandering the coast of France alone. Anathema figures out public transportation fairly easily, expanding the range they can roam in. She has the time of her life.

Sadly, sixth year approaches as time rolls on, and Ellie's birthday meetup marks their return to the Isles so they'll have about a month to focus on getting ready for school.

Anathema's about ready to go home, though. The vacation's been amazing, but...

It'll be nice to sleep in their own bed for a bit before returning to Hogwarts.

Permalink Mark Unread

And it's nice to see everyone again, too. Anathema is great, really great, but Ellie's missed Fay a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay's missed her too. The house has felt empty without them.

Permalink Mark Unread

Now they're back, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fortunately.

Though once the girls get settled in - she and Bellatrix do have something to talk to them about.

Permalink Mark Unread

All right.

What is it?

Permalink Mark Unread

She gets them all sat around the table, and: "Shortly after Bellatrix came home, she told me about an artifact Voldemort had tasked her with securing. We went to retrieve it, and managed to get it fully under our control before Voldemort could take it from her. It was a golden cup, we believe to be Helga Hufflepuff's."

"I've been talking to some experts in the Dark Arts abroad over the last year, primarily about the Diary from your second year and Ravenclaw's Diadem. This summer, we took the cup to one of those experts, and confirmed that it at least is a Dark artifact called a horcrux - and given how lightly Voldemort secured the cup, and given the displayed properties of the Diadem and Diary, we suspect those are horcruxes as well, and that Voldemort might have created several more."

"Horcruxes are a method of obtaining immortality by anchoring your soul into objects through a human sacrifice. Usually, the soul pieces are small, only ensuring that their creator will stay tied to the mortal plane after death and have a chance to recreate their body. Voldemort seems to have figured out how to not only split his soul, but also grow the resulting pieces until they can act as forks, possessing people - though they seem to have different amounts of trouble with that."

"We spent some of this summer investigating the cup. We think we know how to identify other objects like it, now, and - we didn't feel comfortable leaving it active too long, even monitoring each other, so we destroyed it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good that you destroyed it. Not great news otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema nods.

"Do we know how many more?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix shakes her head. "No, not for sure. There's some magically significant numbers he might've been going for - either for number of Horcruxes or for number of soul pieces - but no one's ever made more than one Horcrux and written down what happened. We don't know what the upper limit is, if any, or if there's anything stopping him from creating new Horcruxes to replace destroyed ones, or if there's a rate limit on Horcrux creation."

"We can guess some items he might have targeted as Horcruxes - he seems to be using significant items, which might help the magic hold. Artifacts of the Founders seem likely, especially since he's already used two, and both Slytherin's locket and Gryffindor's sword are unaccounted for. Past that... Culturally, magically, or personally significant items. We need to know more."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do we have a plan?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some of one, though we're still gathering information. We need to focus on finding out how many he has and where he's hidden them, mostly, but the Diadem is the only other one we know exists for sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"I wanted to ask... Do you know what he was planning, that night in the graveyard?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I wasn't very aware then, but... I know he was planning to sacrifice you in some ritual he thought would add another layer of immortality to him. He was convinced he had somehow found one of the Deathly Hallows, the Resurrection Stone. I don't know the details of what he thought he was doing with it - the ritual was related to an old one for transferring magical debts though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...He did have a stone. I grabbed it before I left."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Huh."

"I remember him being angry after, but - not much more specific."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's up in our room, I can go get it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "They're basically legends, but - I might be able to figure out some clue at least if it actually is one."

Permalink Mark Unread

She darts upstairs and retrieves the stone from her trunk, then returns. "Here it is."

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes it, examining it. "...See, here, etched into it," she says, indicating a small carving - a triangle containing a line and circle. "This is the symbol of the Deathly Hallows." She traces the triangle, "Death's Cloak," the line, "Death's Wand," and the circle, "Death's Stone."

She turns it over in her hands three times. It glints. Bellatrix stares at it with a raised eyebrow, then laughs a little and hands it over to Fay. "I think you'll have to do the proper test. There's no shades waiting for me."

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay smiles a little, taking the stone, and flips it over three times.

And -

Ghosts, but not quite, manifest around her. They look real, almost, still in the colors of life, just... Faded. Washed out. Translucent.

One of them - the most substantial - an old man in a trim suit, blinks around, then focuses on Fay, a wide smile spreading across his face. "Can it be?" he asks. "Little Fay. You've grown."

Fay smiles more broadly, something soft in her eyes. "Hello, grandpa," she says. "I'm not sure 'grown' is the right word. I was as tall as I'll ever be last I saw you."

He chuckles, the corners of his eyes wrinkling. "There's other ways to grow, little sprite."

She nods. "I suppose there are." And, looking at the others - a handful only, not everyone she's lost, but... The most impactful. The ones she missed. And - one she's never even met, a young man in a soldier's uniform, who she blinks at, then - "Grandfather? - Lawrence Reynolds?"

The man stares around, clearly disoriented. "I. Yes. How?" To the shade Fay was talking to - "Father? Where..."

Fay leans forward. "You're dead. You have been for - a long time." She swallows. "I'm your granddaughter. Your son - he grew up to be a great man."

The shade blinks, nodding, and takes a shaky breath.

Fay looks around - and, softly, "I miss you all." One shade, a woman probably in her early twenties, walks over to squeeze Fay's shoulder and smile at her. "But..." Fay smiles a little. "This was - a bit of a test - "

Her great-grandfather chuckles. "Say no more, little sprite. Go about your business. Us dead can rest a bit longer, and if your strange magic's at all repeatable - well, I do say I'd like to catch up sometime."

Fay nods, tears in her eyes despite her smile - and flips the stone the other way. Her shades dissipate, softly, and she takes a deep breath.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Well. It certainly works like the Resurrection Stone should."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Wow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's supposedly a risk of getting obsessed with it, or suicidally depressed from using it too much, but... The stories mostly sound like 'person obsessed with dead person uses the stone to try to talk to their dead and freaks out when this does not solve their actual problem.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I can be cautious."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Can I try?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, handing it over. "Keep your Occlumentic shields up," she says, "In case the obsession is both magical in origin and accurately reported."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Right." She takes a moment to focus, then turns the stone over three times.

Permalink Mark Unread

And -

There's only two shades. One of them is faded, barely visible - male, looks a lot like Ellie, not much older than her, early twenties -

And a woman, indistinguishable from someone alive except for the golden light softly outlining her, shining from her skin. She looks somewhat like Petunia, minus years of bitterness and rage. Tremendously like Ellie. She beams at her daughter, then grins over to Anathema, to Fay -

"I'm happy for you," she says, laughing, tears in her eyes. "That stone can't keep me here long, but - "

"I'm so happy for you. Proud of you. Love is a wonderful thing."

Her form's wavering already.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Mum? Dad?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," she says, "My wonderful girl."

The man turns to her, his form fading into reality more, and he grins - his face is a bit more discernible than the rest of him, and his lips move, but he seems far away - then a sudden waver, and, "You've grown. You survived - "

And he wavers out.

Lily laughs. "Tell Sirius we don't blame him, we still love him," she says, speaking quickly now. "The Hallows are real. They can - "

She almost flickers out, then reforms with an annoyed expression. "You need to - "

Fade.

"You have - "

Flicker.

"...I love you. Please avoid ever permanently dying," she says, glowering at a point none of the girls are in.

Her form's very faint, now. James is still there, still a shade - still not entirely solid.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll try."

"Goodbye."

Permalink Mark Unread

Softly: "I'm always with you, Ellie. And we'll meet again, someday. Just - briefly."

And she and James fade out.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug?

Permalink Mark Unread

That'd be good, yeah.

"People said I looked like them but-"

"Guess I really do, huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

She moves around the table to hug Ellie from the other side.

"Genetics are funny like that," she says, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"What she said- We should write it down. Try to figure it out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ahead of you. I started a transcription spell when it seemed she was actually aware of everything that's happened in the living world. None of the other spirits - including your father - seemed to be."

"Still, there's some things before that I didn't get. We should hopefully be able to review it all in a Pensieve, though... Some of her body language was also - telling, maybe."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Seemed like something was stopping her from talking."

She puts the stone back onto the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle. "It seemed that way to me, too. And - she seemed aware of it enough that she might've been trying to work around it, with her last words."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. Implying that I might- temporarily die."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...It didn't sound like a metaphor for something."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No. But these," she taps the table next to the stone. "have something to do with it. So it'll be horcruxes and Hallows we have to find."

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix nods. "Grindelwald was the last person rumored to have the Elder Wand, though he's in a European prison with no visitors."

"The cloak... That's less sure. It was supposedly an invisibility cloak, remarkably fine, that could hide you from even Death."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I have an invisibility cloak. It was my dad's. Still works."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...And it's made of thestral hair, a creature associated with Death..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Elder Wand's core is supposedly thestral hair."

"Well, marrying into a family with a Hallow would be one way to find out about them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Guess so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's no obvious mythical way to identify the cloak, though. It was supposed to be the most subtle of the three."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "There's a lot of circumstantial evidence, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "There is."

"Which likely just leaves the Elder Wand."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which we have no leads on."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It might be the easiest one to find cold, actually - you could say it's the only Hallow actually confirmed to exist. To the point some people think the Hallows legend was created as an origin story for it, actually, though not everyone believes it's - effectively supernatural."

"The Elder Wand supposedly jumps between bearers. It's the only wand known to shift its loyalty. It jumps when its previous wielder is murdered - which seems to pretty much happen inevitably - and it always switches loyalty to whoever caused that death, either directly or indirectly."

"Grindelwald isn't dead, but... He doesn't still have a wand, or at least he shouldn't. And some of the myths around the wand are... Very non-specific. It's possible that utter defeat, possibly including destroying everything someone stands for, counts - a more metaphorical death."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So who defeated Grindelwald?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Dumbledore's credited with it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Oh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Voldemort's certainly noticed that, too. But at least Dumbledore's hard for him to take down..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That might be why Voldemort's so obsessed with tearing apart Hogwarts."

"Of course, at that point, knowing who likely has the wand doesn't help us get it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not really, no."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pointing out that I don't like Dumbledore and don't see a problem with assassination doesn't really help, does it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not super, no. I don't think we want to jump straight to that without a lot more certainty than we have right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fair. No one's actually sure what having all three Hallows does, anyways..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's not a whole lot of overlap or really obvious synergies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There's some guesses, but... It's worse than myth, since supposedly no one has ever even held, let alone mastered, all of them at once."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bet people just made up whatever crazy thing they wanted."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Pretty much. Usually whatever suited their political agenda - I think Grindelwald's claim was that he'd become the 'Master of Death.'"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, like that. What would that even mean?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think at that point whatever fits the propaganda best. He might've been going for 'gets to decide who dies.' I know Voldemort was going for immortality."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "Terrible."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely no creativity whatsoever."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sadly, they're unable to get much of anything else out of analyzing Lily's words, at least for now. It leaves them with more than they started with, of course, but... There's still a lot of questions.

One thing Fay turns the conversation to near the end is the upcoming school year.

Permalink Mark Unread

Defeating Voldemort is more important than their education, but... Anathema's unsure what she and Ellie can necessarily do to help that they can't from Hogwarts.

And the problem might very well come to Hogwarts again.

Permalink Mark Unread

They have a couple NEWTs left to do.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. Honestly they probably could've taken the Defense NEWT along with Transfiguration, but Anathema had wanted to spend an extra year in Fay's class and hadn't had a ton else to put in that slot. Still, they have Charms, and the OWLs for their electives, and Anathema decided to start her Potions NEWT in the slot left open by Transfiguration.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie will swap for Herbology, then. See if it gets trickier at the NEWT level.

Permalink Mark Unread

If they get bored maybe they can study for the History NEWT on their own.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wonder who the teacher'll be this year...

Permalink Mark Unread

Dumbledore's issues finding a replacement professor continued, sadly... His current plan is to take the professor position and teach the upper years himself, with more TAs to handle the out of lecture bits, and their previous TA teaching the lower years as a sort of on the job training.

Permalink Mark Unread

He really is desperate.

Permalink Mark Unread

True.

Sadly, even with a fairly broad net - there's only so many people even vaguely qualified to teach the position, and no one's been willing to try doing two nonconsecutive years for a while.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe he'll be able to break the curse while he has the position.

Permalink Mark Unread

That'd be very nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Dumbledore should be able to do it, if anyone can.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'd be nice for future students to have a steadier idea of who their teacher will be... And then Dumbledore could actually hire someone competent.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah...

Permalink Mark Unread

The two of them did pretty well, but... Yeah. It wasn't ideal.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe if things work out they can do a History NEWT next year and have a good teacher for it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah! They'll have a lot of free time after all, what with finishing a lot of their other courses - probably they can't get away with three years of Defense, and Anathema's finishing at least Charms and Music this year, hoping to get caught up enough in Astronomy to take that one too... She probably won't manage to finish Ancient Greek, though, but she'll keep up with it anyways.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they can be student TAs for Defense.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay can probably arrange that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bet she could, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds fun.

Permalink Mark Unread

It'll be great practice.

Permalink Mark Unread

Give them a wider variety of opponents to spar against, if nothing else.

Permalink Mark Unread

Plus more time with Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

There's certainly that.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

They do still need to get ready for sixth year, though. Clothes - Ellie and Anathema both had pretty notable growth spurts near the end of fifth year, though hopefully that's the last of them. Books, too, especially for their new NEWT classes. Miscellaneous school supplies...

(There's an aura of tension in Diagon Alley. It's not as bad as the height of the Death Eater war last time, but there have already been attacks, and people are worried.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Hopefully nothing interesting happens while they're there.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay's alert, at least, though not blatantly so.

Still, the shopping trip's peaceful - though not too long after they get back, Fay approaches the Potter-Cantas with: "There's an opportunity for you two to get more involved in the indirect parts of the fight, if you want."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dumbledore's got a group of his old allies - larger than ours, and he's willing to include the both of you in at least some of the meetings. It'll be a chance for information, if nothing else, but since I'm already in those meetings it's I think more important to get a chance for - networking, essentially. Get people to start taking you seriously, see if you can't get anyone to tell you things they wouldn't otherwise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. That sounds good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema nods. "...The one Sirius lent Dumbledore his old house for?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay nods. "It's under the Fidelius now, like ours."

"One advantage to these meetings is having to hide less around the people at them - though we're still compartmentalizing a lot, in every direction."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Makes sense. Are we talking about the Hallows?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "There's no need. Anyone you'll meet there will know about Sirius, at least - and Bellatrix and I talked it over, and we're going to reveal she's on our side and alive when we bring the Horcrux issue to them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"When are the meetings?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"They vary, but they're mostly late in the evening or at night. The next one is one I requested, meeting this Saturday. It includes all the people Bellatrix and I feel should and can learn directly from us about the Horcruxes, and the meeting will be focused on those."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we'll go together?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Okay. Great."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...How much are we telling them about - why we trust mom and all?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Talking about your relationship is up to you, but - we're focusing mostly on her desire to defect to our side."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which was because of me."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods a little. "Yes, but we don't have to present it that way, and we're hoping to keep the meeting focused on the results she's brought."

Permalink Mark Unread

She bites her lip, nodding a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So what story should we tell?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It depends on how much Anathema wants to share. I'm fully comfortable presenting Bellatrix's defection as due to her relationship with me, though."

"We're planning on hiding the way that Voldemort captured her from anyone who can't reasonably find that out themselves. It'd raise unnecessary questions, and presents a more complicated narrative."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It would, but- people should know to be careful."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods a little. "That's true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So maybe we can find another way to bring that up? With the horcruxes and how he's using them to possess people but might not need a horcrux to subvert someone..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "That's worth reminding people of at multiple meetings."

"That Voldemort can subvert people without possession is known, though, since he frequently did that in the last war - and Bellatrix will be speaking about her full experience to Dumbledore, Minister Bones, and Aurors Shacklebolt and Moody, in case there's any new information for them."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Is telling the Ministry anything safe?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Amelia Bones isn't the entirety of the Ministry, and prior to her election she was peripheral to, though not part of, Dumbledore's group. She's about as trustworthy here as any politician could be - she won't necessarily like giving Bellatrix a full pardon, but she's acknowledged the value of doing so before, and she's receptive to restorative justice arguments."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If you think it's a good idea, I trust you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema nods, slowly. "I do too. And I trust mom to handle herself..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you."

"And we'll be cautious, at least as much as is practical."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

"The headquarters is under a Fidelius, so we'll need to arrange for you two and Bellatrix to meet with the Secret Keeper - Dumbledore - ahead of the meeting itself."

Permalink Mark Unread

"When will he be available?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Saturday morning works best for him, it seems, with the meeting happening Saturday evening."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's convenient, I guess."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Do you two want to go over anything else with me and Bellatrix before then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's gonna be stuff we know already, right? No surprises?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"No surprises from us, at least."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod. "Don't think so, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema nods too. "I can let you know if I think of anything, but - yeah, I don't think so."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

"Thanks for agreeing to come."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for inviting us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We want to be there."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "You two need as much information as possible, and... This affects you. You should be able to affect it."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hugs Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug!

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

So when Saturday comes around, the household will be taking a day out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Minus Sirius; he's foresworn ever stepping foot in his childhood home again. (Bellatrix completely understands the sentiment.)

They meet Dumbledore - only briefly - in a muggle establishment in a small city well away from anywhere they usually frequent. He tells them, "The Order of the Phoenix Headquarters is in Twelve Grimmauld Place in London," and wishes them well and expresses that the meeting is still on.

And then - time to get ready for the meeting itself. They'll be taking the floo. Bellatrix is apparently going through as a cat, so no one gets jumpy and attacks her.

She's not exactly thrilled about that.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is a cute cat, though. Perfectly sized for shoulder-sitting.

Permalink Mark Unread

...Well when you put it like that...

(Best Elodie.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Headscritches.

Permalink Mark Unread

Purr!

(Okay, she's ready.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Into the fire, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sirius's home is a narrow, dim townhouse in London. The floo lets out into a formal living room - overstuffed, faded, the portraits all covered. It looks like someone tried to clean, but the dust and grime were ingrained, and there's a foul feel to the air. There's a lanky red headed man waiting in the living room, who smiles at them and says, "Fay! You're a bit early again."

She smiles back. "Good evening, Arthur."

He runs through some identity verification with her, checks her for influence, then: "Everyone's still gathering. We're meeting in the dining room today."

"Alright," she says. "We'll go get set up." She turns to check over her companions, then leads them through the hallway - cramped, incredibly depressing - and to a large dining room in the back of the house.

Permalink Mark Unread

You can really tell this place was abandoned for a decade.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema doesn't like it at all.

Permalink Mark Unread

The dining room's no better. There's some people already there - an Auror with an artificial eye and extensive scarring stands out the most, and he looks directly at Bellatrix before meeting Fay's gaze (and running through identity checks again). Professor Lupin is also in one chair, looking somewhat wan, and sitting next to Professors McGonagall and Cleary, who give the girls a firm nod and a warm smile respectively. The seats set aside for Fay and her group seem to be at one end of the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good that they're all sticking together.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema ends up sitting next to Elodie, on the same side as Bellatrix the secret shoulder cat - and then if Ellie's on her other side, that probably leaves Fay next to Ellie...

(She feels a bit awkward.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They can hold hands under the table.

Permalink Mark Unread

Squeeze.

(Good Ellie.)

Permalink Mark Unread

That's what she's here for.

Permalink Mark Unread

The last members file in over the next fifteen minutes - Minister Bones, Aurors Tonks and Shacklebolt, Headmaster Dumbledore, Andromeda Tonks and Narcissa Malfoy in last (cat Bellatrix is trying very hard not to look uncomfortable when they enter), Arthur Weasley following them in. Fifteen human-shaped people and one cat-shaped person makes for a crowded room.

Dumbledore introduces everyone to each other, pleasantly, then says he called this meeting at the request of Fay Reynolds, who had information he agreed was vital to share promptly and in full (with those present, at least; he implies others might get a filtered account).

Fay thanks him, then: "I believe I have discovered one of Voldemort's means of immortality," she says, simply. "If not his main one."

There's murmurs about that, and she goes on with, "He has made at least one Horcrux. A Horcrux is an object that securely houses a piece of someone's soul outside of their body. Usually, it houses just enough to tether the primary soul to the mortal realm in the event of that soul's main tether, the body, being destroyed, which creates a window of opportunity for someone to bind that soul to a new body. They're incredibly rare, so we don't know a lot about them, but they are known to be difficult to destroy, generally requiring Dark magic. Most Horcruxes can reportedly influence the minds and emotions of anyone near them, though I have reason to believe Voldemort's can exert a stronger influence."

"I discovered one of his Horcruxes in April this year. I secured it and took it to an international expert who was able to identify it, and who helped me develop a spell that might reveal Horcruxes made by the same person. We then destroyed that Horcrux through Fiendfyre, as it was dangerous to keep around."

"I believe he has made at least two others. One of them was a diary he created during his Hogwarts years, which was capable of possessing anyone who wrote in it and then slowly draining their life in an effort to fully manifest. The soul fragment within used this to open the Chamber of Secrets in the Hogwarts school year from 1992 to 1993, possessing and nearly killing Serpens Malfoy." She nods at Narcissa. "The diary was reported as destroyed by a severing charm, but that wasn't actually the case. It required the Killing Curse to destroy it."

Permalink Mark Unread

Narcissa scowls. "So he left at least one with an Inner Circle follower, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Two, actually, but - we'll get to that."

"The third I believe to be Ravenclaw's Diadem. He used this in the spring of 1991 to try and possess a student, but the attempt was repelled by protective wards placed on her specifically against Voldemort. It was then able to possess a house elf who tried to remove it to safety, and we believe it's what he used to possess Madame Maxime in 1994. It has not been destroyed."

"The first one I mentioned was made out of Hufflepuff's Cup - I therefore believe it's likely he's at least sought to make two others out of relics of the other Founders. I don't know how many he's made past that, except for speculation that he might've been going for a specific number of active Horcruxes for magical reasons. There's been no documented case of anyone else making multiple Horcruxes, so we don't know what the limit is, if any."

The other members examine her. No one looks very happy, but it's Minister Bones who speaks up next: "How did you locate the Cup, and which other was left with an Inner Circle member?" she asks, brusquely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix shifts, a bit uncertainly, on Elodie's shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"One of his lieutenants defected, and has shared this information as a surety of good faith."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "Directly to Miss Reynolds, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is correct."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is the source available for confirmation?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She pokes Bellatrix on the head.

Permalink Mark Unread

Mrrr.

She jumps off Elodie's shoulder, swirling into her human form, her hand very definitely nowhere near her wand.

(Still, a lot of people react with open shock. Bellatrix isn't meeting anyone's gazes.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Bellatrix Black," she says, "if introductions are necessary."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They're not," Narcissa says. "Hello, Bella."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Cissy," Bellatrix says.

Arthur Weasley is frowning at her. "Uh - excuse me - why did you defect?"

"...I've never liked Voldemort much, and then he ditched me in Azkaban. Fay gave me a better option," she says, curtly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's all?" Narcissa asks, tilting her head.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's enough. You defected because you couldn't get a divorce."

Minister Bones frowns at her. "I'm not questioning your defection. But - your escape from Azkaban was a few weeks before the deaths of your sister-in-law and daughter. Did those not - ?"

Bellatrix tenses.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema glances at her mom - nudges her under the table, then nods a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Mintaka's death was faked."

"I don't want it - known she's alive. She'd be in danger. But - the better option Fay gave me involved protecting her."

Minister Bones nods, settling back.

"Voldemort left the Cup with me," Bellatrix continues. "Which makes two Horcruxes with Inner Circle members, and at least two others."

Dumbledore hums. "The most well known Founders artifacts that can't currently be located are Slytherin's Locket and Gryffindor's Sword - and I believe it likely that Voldemort's birth family had hold of Slytherin's Locket for a time... I suspect he would've protected that one more thoroughly, out of sentiment if nothing else, and that it will be somewhere personally significant."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who was his birth family?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"His mother's family was the Gaunts," Dumbledore says, "A pureblood family that died out in the forties, and that was the last to claim provable descent from Slytherin. His father was a muggle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm guessing that's not, uh, common knowledge among his supporters."

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles a little. "That doesn't seem to be the case."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I hadn't known."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...I knew but I also never actually cared. He told me lots of weird minor things like that."

" - Oh speaking of him being weird, he can body hop if his current body's destroyed. That might require active Horcruxes, but I don't think it depletes his Horcruxes, or if it does he has a completely ridiculous number, because he acted like being hit with the Killing Curse was something to playfully pout over and not actually avoid. Either whatever Lily Potter did to him went much farther than destroying his body, or he was just laying low for ten years after his supposed death, since his previous turn around had been measured in days."

Permalink Mark Unread

There's further murmurs.

Minister Bones nods and turns to Ellie, asking questions about her encounters with the Diadem and Diary.

Permalink Mark Unread

The diadem was like they said, the bit of him in it tried to possess her. Sort of migrating into her head? But he was blocked out.

The diary was a bit different, actually. It was more- sucking Serpens into it and building a new construct for him. He was kind of like a ghost that was turning solid, before the diary was destroyed.

Permalink Mark Unread

The diary spoke, yes? Did it say anything in particular?

Permalink Mark Unread

Gloating. Showed how he came up with his name based on a dumb anagram. Boasting about how Serpens was easy to trick, compared her to her grandfather.

Seemed more like a teenager than the current Voldemort.

Permalink Mark Unread

Did he seem to have any new information since the forties that he didn't get from Serpens Malfoy?

Permalink Mark Unread

She's fairly sure he didn't.

Permalink Mark Unread

Interesting...

The conversation then turns to focus on Fay and Bellatrix, mostly about the qualities of the Cup, how to identify Horcruxes... They seem set to go late into the night, and there's a break midway through.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie's having a bit of a headache. But this is important, so she'll stick it out.

Permalink Mark Unread

Does she want to stretch her legs during the break? Though there's not much interesting in the house, and they've already gotten warnings about the Order still not having cleared out every cursed object the Blacks thought was appropriate to keep in their house...

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe just to get a drink. Wandering a minefield is not her idea of a good time.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fair.

Maybe if they get the library cleared enough to wander in, though...

Permalink Mark Unread

You know it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle.

(Bellatrix should be able to navigate it all, actually, but right now she seems kind of busy answering questions...)

Permalink Mark Unread

They are technically here on business.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean.

Fair, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lean.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Back to the meeting, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Back to the meeting.

Permalink Mark Unread

They don't learn much else before it's over, though the members of the Order seem to be adjusting to Bellatrix - and to the girls being worth listening to.

Andromeda Tonks and Narcissa Malfoy approach them at the end - they're Bellatrix's sisters, and Andromeda's daughter Auror Tonks is trailing behind them curiously.

(Bellatrix is... Not comfortable with this.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello." Elodie gets to her sisters before they can get to her.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hello," Narcissa says.

Andromeda smiles. "Good evening - Elodie, right? Are you Bella's friend?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, that's right. And very pleased to meet the both of you, of course."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's our pleasure," Narcissa says.

"It's good Bella has friends," Andromeda says, smiling more gently and glancing over to her older sister.

Permalink Mark Unread

"One finds they can be helpful for dealing with stress, and she has been under a great deal lately, as I'm sure you can imagine."

Permalink Mark Unread

Narcissa nods. "Still, surely she'd be willing to see us."

Andromeda takes her younger sister's arm. "Another day." Smile. "When we're not all sighing longingly for our beds."

Narcissa glances over at Andromeda, then sighs. "Another day."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps you can arrange a meeting by post?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'd be alright with that," Bellatrix says, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright," Narcissa says, and lets her sister lead her away.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix relaxes a bit, sighing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"Let's get home."

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent idea. Off to the floo.

Permalink Mark Unread

She relaxes fully once they're home, leaning into her girlfriend.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

Permalink Mark Unread

Snuggle.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you want to meet with your sisters?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Eventually?"

"Just... Not now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I just want to know if I need to start drafting a library of polite put-offs."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "No one would believe I wrote them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, are you British too barbaric for the concept of plausible deniability?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, I'm just allergic to being polite."

Permalink Mark Unread

Laugh.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's not quite that I have to keep certain words out of my diet, of course - more an issue of tone."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm. So what do I have to do to get you to beg?"

Permalink Mark Unread

" - Okay! Going to bed! Night everyone!" Anathema squeaks, dragging her wife out of the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Don't stay up too late, kids!" Ellie calls from around the corner.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix doubles over laughing.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay snorts. "I should get to sleep, too," she says, then, with a grin: "But I'd suggest a bit of restraint for begging."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're both horrible people."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ah, but you love us so."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "I really do."

Permalink Mark Unread

Mmm.

"Shall we repair to our boudoir, mademoiselle?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mmm, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

And there they can perhaps pursue a few definitions of the word 'restraint'.

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe even a few causes for begging...

Permalink Mark Unread

Delightful.

Permalink Mark Unread

The night goes exceptionally well.

For them, at least.

The news the next morning is... Less pleasant.

Permalink Mark Unread

What happened?

Permalink Mark Unread

"There was a mass breakout in Azkaban early today," Fay says over the breakfast table. "The Dementors all defected, and the Death Eaters incarcerated there all escaped. One of the guards and one of the Aurors who responded to try to handle the situation were Kissed, as were six non-Death Eater prisoners who refused to follow the Death Eaters. Another three guards and ten prisoners died. None of the Death Eaters were prevented from escaping."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's... really not good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Extremely."

"I am very tempted to grab Narcissa and go ex-husband hunting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not without me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Make a date of it, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

Firm nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Honestly, I'm less concerned about the Death Eaters from a strategic standpoint than the Dementors - we don't know how to destroy those, and prior to the Ministry's deal with them they were broadly hostile but disorganized."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How did they manage to negotiate, anyway?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dementors are intelligent. They can't speak human languages, but they can make themselves understood in many magical languages - and a wizard a few centuries ago got their language as a wild talent. He didn't pass it on, but he made an artifact the Ministry can use for translation."

"The deal was that the Dementors would have a population of helpless mages, disproportionately inclined to misery, to feed on without harassment, and could consume the souls of those up for execution. In exchange, they wouldn't attack non-prisoners, and wouldn't allow those prisoners to leave without official permission."

"The negotiations happened one small cluster at a time, but - word of them spread very quickly, and soon Dementor clusters were approaching the Ministry. It's likely they simply hadn't been bothering to coordinate before that, not that they couldn't."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That's terrifying."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"I'll talk to Dumbledore about opening the school early and letting more than just students stay there, especially if things get bad - and about doing intensive anti-Dementor training for students and any interested adults."

Permalink Mark Unread

"People need to be able to protect themselves. It's just good Fudge isn't in office anymore, or he might try to hide the news."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Minister Bones made an emergency press release and is announcing it over the wizarding radio."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sighs.

"Are you guys alright to stay here while I bounce around talking to people?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

She gives Ellie a small hug, then heads out.

Permalink Mark Unread

That was an unfortunate start to the day. She leans into Anathema.

Permalink Mark Unread

Unhappy snuggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix frowns a bit.

"...I should - actually check on Narcissa sometime. But I can stay here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can do that now."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "I'll check if she's added me to her allowed floo contacts, or - go through Grimmauld Place, I guess. Going to the post office for an owl would take a while and be insecure, especially if she's thought to protect her house at all."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

She heads off to do that.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you two be all right here if we end up leaving?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. We've got the Fidelius."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right."

She goes to check on Bella.

Permalink Mark Unread

Who's kneeling in front of the floo, getting ready to contact her sister.

Permalink Mark Unread

She waits by the door.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix speaks to her sister for a while, then, turning to Elodie: "She's fairly sure she's safe where she is, but wouldn't object to setting up a check in schedule among our family, and she wants to talk to Fay about getting the Fidelius up on her house and Andy's house - I think we should bring her and Serpens over here until we get that, though - we'd need to talk to the others."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fay at the least, yes. But check-ins are a good idea. Will she be speaking to Andromeda?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"She will, and hopefully Andromeda will talk to her daughter..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The Auror, yes? Hopefully she knows enough to stay in a group."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If she hasn't been taught that I'm going to have words with Minister Bones."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You will not be the only one."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

"We scheduled a check in two hours, to give enough time for discussions."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Hopefully Fay gets back before then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix wants to ask Anathema, Ellie, and Sirius about her sisters coming over, anyways - it's their house too, especially for Anathema and Ellie, and having visitors risks people making the connection between Anathema and Bellatrix's daughter.

Permalink Mark Unread

The more people that know, the weaker the Fidelius is-

But Serpens is technically family and basically a decent person.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Narcissa's thrown in with them enough her best interests lie now in not switching sides again.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema's - unsure. But she likes Auror Tonks, and Serpens is weird but - okay. And Anathema really likes Serpens' younger sister, Lyra. And if her mom thinks her sisters are trustworthy, she's... Okay with it.

(Sirius will probably be a dog the entire time, so, no different from normal. Might hide in his room a bit more than usual, though he's also willing to give it up and go sleep on the couch if their family ends up staying the night.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix is... Fairly sure she trusts her sisters.

Okay well Andromeda is definitely trustworthy. Narcissa is terrible at lying which mostly shakes out to the same thing.

Permalink Mark Unread

So that shakes out to a 'probably yes'.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

She'll check with Fay when she gets home, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sounds good.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay is home soon enough.

"Dumbledore's moving to get the school open early," she says first, "Though it won't happen overnight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Very."

"Narcissa's currently safe, but her house isn't under a Fidelius yet. I was going to talk to her in thirty minutes again. Can we bring her, her daughters, and Andromeda, her husband and daughter, here? Everyone else already agreed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If everyone else is alright. We can play musical bedrooms some and get out the tent..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ask them if they have any tents to bring."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not a bad idea. And our yard's covered by the Fidelius, too, so they can set up outside."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll go talk to Narcissa, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we could have a cookout," she says to Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Introduce the Malfoy girls to horrible muggle movies. Proper sleepover activities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We definitely need to show them Jurassic Park."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Star Wars."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh, yeah, they'll love that - bet you Serpens gets ideas..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You might have to be more leery of Narcissa getting ideas... She's always been the amoral scientist type."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Velociraptors with lightsabers," Anathema says, solemnly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clever girl," she says, kissing Anathema's ear.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and kisses Ellie back. "We should at least see if we can convince her to make you a lightsaber."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll have to learn fencing."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well, Fay's dad already set me up with knife fighting lessons..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can make it a tandem gift sometime."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be really great."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss. "Of course, figuring out the right color might take some tweaking..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could figure out a way to make it change colors."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perfect!" Laugh. "Set it up like a mood ring, though you might have to double up 'angry' and 'sexily evil' on red."

Permalink Mark Unread

"They'd be slightly different shades, obviously."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Real question is which one we make the bloody red..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"'Sexy evil' is dragonsblood. 'Angry' is human blood."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm, fair... Though I think you're a bit sexier as a human... But there's nothing quite so demanding as a dragon..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She coughs.

(She's blushing a little.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which do you think is better?" she demands of Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Um."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We need an outsider's opinion."

Permalink Mark Unread

Ahem. "Most wizards would probably associate dragons more with anger," she says, not looking at either girl, "But 'sexy evil dragon lady' is a bit of a muggle trope."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But sexy dragon ladies are still humanoid! They've got - you know, human lady parts. Just like with a scale bra." She eyes Ellie like she's wondering how hard a partial Transfiguration that'd be.

Permalink Mark Unread

Wow what a fascinating ceiling. Definitely what's making her blush.

"That is true."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That doesn't make any biological sense, though. Reptiles don't give milk."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Prominent mammaries aren't necessary for nursing, though - cats don't have any! They're just a fertility marker conveniently located near eye level. Any bipedal species could develop them - and aliens could have scaled mammals, besides."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Clearly you've been giving this a lot of thought. Anything I should know about, dear?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Just my ever-lasting appreciation for you in any form."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod nod serious nod.

"If you want me to learn to do scale-tits then I think it's only fair you do cat ears and a tail."

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums, thoughtfully.

"We have a deal."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shake on it?

Permalink Mark Unread

Shake on it!

"...Also I think this means I just agreed dragons are sexy, doesn't it..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

Permalink Mark Unread

Giggle kiss. "I'll be your sexy tiger lady and you can be my sexy dragon lady, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds just about perfect."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm, so if you're a sexy dragon lady with a dragonsblood lightsaber... And I'm a sexy white tiger lady... What kind of lightsaber do I get..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Blue, to match your eyes."

Permalink Mark Unread

Aw! Kiss!

"A Jedi-Sith romance sounds very cute," she says, giggling. "Though for a proper Star Wars setup we'd need a third person to flesh out our trio of scrappy heroes..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Do you feel scrappy?" she asks Fay over her shoulder.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I could pull it off," she says, laughing, "But no slave bikinis."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Aw, but Leia's the coolest."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Certainly the most well-ventilated."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles, nudging Ellie. "They should've given her a lightsaber. And a girlfriend."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alas for missed opportunities."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We won't miss any, though. Dangerous sexy lesbians only."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Absolutely." Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix returns soon after, bringing over Narcissa and her kids - the Tonks family will need to wait on Andy and her husband finishing their shifts at the hospital and on their daughter finishing her shift as an Auror, though they're on alert.

"Good news," she says, "Narcissa has a nice family tent, though we're unsure if Andy does, and they're fine setting up in the yard."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That is good news. Wasn't looking forward to the bedroom shuffle."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah. And even if Andy doesn't have a tent, we have ours - and they can share for a night."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nod.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Andy's never been the camping sort," Narcissa says, idly. "But her family's not picky in my experience."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And Dora can stay with us, anyways," Lyra says, peering around. "I like her."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In your room, maybe. I'm not sharing."

Permalink Mark Unread

Lyra rolls her eyes with all the energy of an exasperated fourteen year old. "Anyways - hey Anathema," she waves a bit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hey Lyra. Need help setting up?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Nah, we're good. Magic's useful."

"So, uh - mom said her sister's not evil anymore and that our cousin Mintaka's not dead - ?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema glances at Ellie, feeling awkward. "So, um, about that..."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pulls Anathema into a side hug. "Both of those things are true, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So. Uh."

"You're not really going to find someone named Mintaka wandering around, because - "

"She's me."

"I ran away before Hogwarts and changed my name, and - mom covered my tracks after she got out of Azkaban."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You owe me twenty galleons," Serpens tells her sister, solemnly.

Permalink Mark Unread

Lyra sticks her tongue out at Serpens.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which part did you bet on?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"We've had five galleons going for a while on 'runaway pureblood.' The last fifteen were on the 'Mintaka' part. Even Lyra wasn't dumb enough to bet me on whether Aunt Bella killed Aunt Tara."

Permalink Mark Unread

She shakes her head. "Rich kids."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mom stopped giving me an allowance last time I fleeced someone out of a hundred galleons. I need to support my lifestyle somehow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Shouldn't have told her about the hundred galleons, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True. I hadn't yet learned all the Slytherin lessons perfectly - since while technically I didn't tell her, I failed to prevent the information from reaching her ears. A dreadful oversight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Terrible. Presumably you are much better now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course. I'm perfect now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Uh huh."

Permalink Mark Unread

"She only does one stupid thing a week now. It's amazing."

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out at her sister.

Permalink Mark Unread

She snorts.

"Come on, let's actually get set up."

To the Potter-Cantas: "Thanks for letting us know."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thanks for taking it okay," she says, laughing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's no problem."

And: off.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"Okay?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug.

"Okay."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That wasn't so bad."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not at all." Lean.

Permalink Mark Unread

"So movie night's probably still on."

Permalink Mark Unread

Heh. "Probably, yeah." Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

Best Ellie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Getting everyone settled requires minimal shuffling, even when it turns out the Tonks don't have their own tent. The Tonks take the revelation of Anathema's identity well, and Auror Tonks ruffles her hair, expresses delight, and offers to teach her more curses.

It's a bit of a crowded house in the days it takes to get everyone's homes under the Fidelius - and after some discussion they decide not to put the Tonks' house under the Fidelius, so it can be kept as a meeting place with people outside their family. The Tonks will live with Andromeda's sisters until the threat passes - which will be easier once Fay and all the children are off to Hogwarts.

Which comes soon. Dumbledore arranges quickly for enough staff to be in residence to open the castle, gets the go ahead from Minister Bones, and then any students who want to return early can - the train isn't running yet, but muggleborns can contact Hogwarts via owl or head to Kings Cross to get a professor to floo them over to Hogsmeade Station. Fay's one of the professors helping reopen, though it's up to the girls if they want to return to the castle early themselves - they're hopefully safe under the Fidelius, after all, and staying at home makes it easier for them to attend the quick series of emergency Order of the Phoenix meetings.

(Voldemort doesn't waste time in stepping up attacks. His test assault on Malfoy Manor happens while the Malfoy girls are at Fay's home, before the Fidelius is up - it's repelled violently by Narcissa's incredibly nasty wards and by the house elves. The Daily Prophet reports attacks, successful or not, nearly daily - there's a rapidly escalating aura of fear, though the Aurors are responding more quickly now to Death Eater attacks, and there's hope that they'll be able to dissuade this pattern from continuing. Narcissa wards Andromeda's house, even though it'll mostly be empty, and volunteers along with Fay at an Order meeting to help ward other places.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie's in favor of staying home, if they can be helpful.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema is too.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alright.

Fay will be by - and at the Order meetings - as often as she can.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hogwarts will have to wait a little while longer.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

(Anathema writes all their friends - everyone in their network - to strongly encourage them to go to Hogwarts early. Muggleborn kids were targeted the most, last war.)

(She talks to the Order, too, about warding the homes of the muggleborns' families - gets that pushed through, though it'll take time to get to everyone - and then starts a small campaign to talk Minister Bones and Headmaster Dumbledore into allowing pre-Hogwarts muggleborns into the castle, too, into protecting their families, since last war the Death Eaters successfully discovered several pre-Hogwarts kids and killed them.)

(Her longer term plan, she confides to Ellie, is to get them to agree to take muggles into Hogwarts, too, if the war escalates enough. They'll need to adjust the wards, so it's a harder sell, but - whatever they can get.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie contributes her support to Anathema's campaigns, and goes over her encounters with the returned Voldemort with the Order. Tactical breakdowns, favored spells, physical attributes...

Permalink Mark Unread

It's helpful - everything, and Bellatrix and Fay lend their own expertise and influence.

(The time they're required to actually go to Hogwarts is fast approaching, though.)

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll just have to try to get everything useful down they can.

Not that they won't be able to attend Order meetings ever, but it's harder to get out of the castle and probably not as worth the trouble.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay can bring them with her a lot, but as a whole their attendance will be hampered, yes.

Permalink Mark Unread

Suppose they'd best get packing, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yes, though Fay will be returning to help - and she and several other professors are joining the students on the train in, to provide security.

Permalink Mark Unread

Oh. Good. That does make her feel better.

Permalink Mark Unread

She squeezes Ellie's shoulder.

That makes sense... And Ellie and Anathema are welcome to sit with her, if they'd like, though she won't be offended if they'd rather sit with friends.

Permalink Mark Unread

They usually try to get a compartment by themselves, so.

Permalink Mark Unread

Room for one more, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Always.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles.

"You two can sit with me, then. They're planning to have me in one of the middle compartments right now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Should be fun."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As distinct from all our other chances to sit down and talk?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"This one will be on a train. And there will be the tea trolley."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And you never went to Hogwarts, so you didn't get the proper student experience!"

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "Important considerations, yes."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The train is where I met Anathema."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her smile softens. "I'd be happy to get the proper student experience, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It won't be proper-proper, because you've already been to Hogwarts. But this is as close as we'll get."

Permalink Mark Unread

"True, true."

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema giggles. "And I don't think the Hat will sort her. But she can ride up to the castle with us in the carriages, too."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Really, she should be taking a boat."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But then she wouldn't be sitting with us!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Mm, tradeoffs."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "I think we should hold onto her. Make her sit at Ravenclaw table with us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"How scandalous, a teacher sitting down amongst the lowly students."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Sadly I don't think we can get away with making her join our classes..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunately!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Dumbledore would riot if he also had to find a new Defense teacher."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A little riot might be good for him. Get the blood flowing, exercise the muscles."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps help his heart health a bit."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you'd be doing him a favor, really."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I'm not sure I'm emotionally ready for a return to student life, though. Dorms especially."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I guess that's fair."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've liked Hogwarts, but, yeah, graduating will be really nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"No more shared bath will be nice."

Permalink Mark Unread

"At least not with anyone I'm not married to."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The exception that proves the rule."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

(On to finish packing for school, then?)

Permalink Mark Unread

They wouldn't want to be late.

Permalink Mark Unread

Definitely.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay has them on the train basically first - they pick their compartment in the middle of the train, put their luggage in and mark that it's claimed, and then Fay at least plans to patrol the platform some. The girls are welcome to join her, help keep an eye on the train itself, or stay in the compartment.

Permalink Mark Unread

They'll stay on the train.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "I'll be back before we actually pull out."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll meet you back here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. See you."

And she heads off the train.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Want to check the train?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

On patrol it is.

Permalink Mark Unread

Everything looks calm so far, though there's some tension among the students as they gather, mostly pretty early. The first years seem the most scared, the older years the most low key stressed.

Anathema seems pretty good at talking to people, though, especially the first years. Reassuring them.

Permalink Mark Unread

She is pretty good at that, yeah.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie's helping, too - just being present and quietly calm is a big deal for some people.

Permalink Mark Unread

That, she's got covered.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie is the best at looking cool and confident.

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

Permalink Mark Unread

(Quick kiss.)

Patrolling goes well, and soon enough it's time to head back to their compartment to meet up with Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

Good that nothing happened. Back to Fay!

Permalink Mark Unread

Everything was quiet on her end, too, and nothing untoward happens as the train lurches into motion and pulls out of the station.

Fay settles into the compartment on the seat across from the two girls. "So what are the traditional train activities?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Finishing the homework you didn't get to over the summer, practicing spells, Exploding Snap, running through the corridor screaming like a lunatic..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Normal stuff!" Anathema chirps merrily. "Discussing what Houses you want to be in if you're first year... Finding weird corners to make out in if you're older... Stuffing yourself with candy... Posturing at rival Houses... Helping people find lost pets..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That last one got a lot easier after we learned Summoning Charms."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though some of them wedge themselves into odd places... And you have to be careful summoning anything with claws."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Toads are usually okay, though. Bouncy."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Slimy if you're bad at not hitting yourself with your summons, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Especially if it's been hiding out in the loo."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Gross."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I heard that actually happened to Longbottom in Gryffindor."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'll go for a subset of that at most," Fay says, laughing.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Probably wise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Cards, spell practice, and a reasonable amount of candy do sound fun, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

They can make a start on those, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shows them a few new card games and tricks ("It's only cheating if you get caught," she says, with a perfectly straight face), a few small fun spells... And she treats for candy when the tea trolley arrives.

Reasonable amounts.

(She does also fairly often get up to patrol her section of the train, to make sure nothing's wrong - but she has plenty of time to spend with the girls.)

Permalink Mark Unread

This is really nice.

Permalink Mark Unread

It is. They sit and talk a lot, of course, but - there's something about doing it while traveling that's nice.

It makes her look forward even more to globe trotting with Ellie and Anathema after they graduate.

Permalink Mark Unread

Once all this nonsense is over with.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

It will be eventually, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yep.

Permalink Mark Unread

For now, though... It's good to just spend time together.

Permalink Mark Unread

That's the beauty of the train to Hogwarts.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

(Lean.)

The train ride feels like it goes pretty fast, this time.

Permalink Mark Unread

It always does.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah.

They're at Hogwarts soon enough - nothing goes horrifically wrong, thankfully - and after the professors check the area around the station, Anathema starts tugging Fay over to join them in the carriage ride up.

Permalink Mark Unread

Picking the one with the friendliest thestrals is important.

Permalink Mark Unread

Exceptionally so - Anathema's gotten to where she can recognize some, actually... Soot's her favorite, always works the carriages, and is... Near the front this time! Pulling with a thestral Anathema doesn't recognize but greets cheerfully. (The thestrals snort, shaking their manes. Soot nudges at Anathema's pockets, apparently trying to steal the chocolate frog she'd stashed in one.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Sorry Soot, chocolate's no good for thestrals. Even if it is wriggling like a real frog.

Permalink Mark Unread

Soot is pretty sure chocolate is for thestrals, but can be distracted with a roll of ham Anathema picked off her lunch sandwich (which gets the other thestral snorting at her until Anathema shares).

Into the carriages, then, thestral petting duty having been discharged?

Permalink Mark Unread

Into the carriage.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay gives the thestrals a quick pat, then climbs in with the girls.

"I'll have to split off once we actually get to the Great Hall, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you say now."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I can be stubborn."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, but I know your weakness."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh? Do you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep. It's me." And she turns the puppy-dog eyes on for Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh no," she says, laughing. "I'll be strong..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you really?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll do my best..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Faaa~aaay," she singsongs.

Permalink Mark Unread

She makes a small show of faltering. "I really am supposed to sit at the head table..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But what does your heart tell you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She hums. "That I should be with you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"There you go, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It seems you've worn me down."

Permalink Mark Unread

She grins smugly.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles at Ellie, ruffling her hair.

Permalink Mark Unread

Smirk smirk.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Ravenclaw will finally have all the coolest kids."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs. "I'm still not following you to your classes, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

She pats Fay's hand. "It's a long ways to bedtime yet."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Surely you won't put me through that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"The question is rather," Ellie says solemnly, "whether you will put you through that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But if I can't say no to you, doesn't it become your responsibility to only ask reasonable things of me?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Fay, please. I'm a teenager; we're allergic to responsibility."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You're close enough to seventeen to begin practicing a little."

Permalink Mark Unread

She waves a hand airily. "I'm sure my natural gifts will reveal themselves when I have need of them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Being responsible for me isn't need enough? I'm offended." She's grinning, though.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe I just have faith in you to rise to the occasion."

Permalink Mark Unread

"To learn to say no to you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

Dramatic sigh. "If you must."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Some requests would be a bit of a hardship, sadly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You could try thinking of it as character-building?" she tries.

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I've already built all the character I can get from school."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Fair point."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Maybe we can join you as professors, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you need more than one NEWT for that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think if you add up all the partial NEWTs we've got, we could join you by... January."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not quite sure it works like that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You'd better double-check. Don't want to miss out on our professorships because of a technicality."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll ask around, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think you'd enjoy traveling more than professoring, though," she says, "If you're leaving the student life behind."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only if you're coming with."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will," she says. "Though I'd rather wait out the school year. Give Dumbledore the summer to replace me."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So we can do both, then. Professors in January and traveling after the summer."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like an excellent compromise."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then it's decided. No take-backsies."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hee.

Permalink Mark Unread

And the carriage pulls up at the castle.

Permalink Mark Unread

Ellie gets out and offers a hand to help Anathema.

Permalink Mark Unread

She takes Ellie's hand, laughing a little.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Your castle, my lady," she says, sweeping a bow.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "Thank you, my good sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

She'll offer the same to Fay, if she hasn't gotten out already.

Permalink Mark Unread

She was about to, but she accepts Ellie's hand with a soft smile and a teasing, "What well mannered knights they have here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Only the best for the most beautiful ladies in attendance tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

She fakes a little curtsy. "Lead on then, good sir."

Permalink Mark Unread

Into the castle!

Permalink Mark Unread

She keeps her hand on Ellie's elbow the entire way.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay's on her other side, hand resting a bit more gently - and she sits with them as promised, saying to Flitwick when he passes by - "I seem to have been kidnapped." He laughs and leaves her to it.

Permalink Mark Unread

Her Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles softly at Ellie, and, voice quiet: "A dragon rather suits you, you know... Hoarding all the pretty maidens for yourself."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles. "That's why dragons are the best."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And since she's also the best knight, no one around can challenge her for us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Which was totally my plan from the beginning."

Permalink Mark Unread

She leans into her wife. "Brilliantly executed, my dear."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Thank you, thank you."

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss!

"Though you'll need to be careful about hoarding too many girls... Your other princesses might get jealous."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think I'm all right with what I have for now."

Permalink Mark Unread

Nuzzle. "Good."

Permalink Mark Unread

Shoulder bump.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles.

(The Sorting begins in the background. It's always rather long, but eventually they'll get to actually eat...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Applauding the new Ravenclaws is also an important part of the experience, Fay.

Permalink Mark Unread

She applauds every student, of course.

Permalink Mark Unread

Sure, if you're going to be all teacherly about it.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sticks her tongue out at Ellie.

"Students can't be genuinely happy for even the other Houses?" she asks, teasingly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not with the House Points system."

Permalink Mark Unread

"If someone looks very dumb you can be happy another House got them, I suppose."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And so you allow an artificial system to divide you. Tsk-tsk."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Blame the ones who forced the system on impressionable youths."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Surely you can rise above it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We are but humble products of our environment."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I have faith you can be more than anyone ever made you to be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Isn't it the job of the adults to provide a supporting and caring environment that helps rather than hinders us from doing that?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sadly, not all adults can be relied on so well." She ruffles Ellie's hair. "Though I'm certainly trying."

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and tries to pat her hair back down.

"This is why mine never looks as nice as yours," she says to Anathema.

Permalink Mark Unread

She giggles and kisses her wife. "I think you're always lovely."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Well yes, but think how much better it could be."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Darling, if we make you any prettier, I'm going to stop functioning," she says, voice serious.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Best wait til after NEWTs, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Take a vacation from higher brain functions."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Give our minds time to recover."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The most important result."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Indeed, indeed."

Permalink Mark Unread

She kisses Ellie as Dumbledore finishes whatever his opening speech was and the food appears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Excellent.

Time to eat, sorry kisses you will have to wait.

Permalink Mark Unread

Awww.

Still, food is important, and Welcoming Feast food is always very delicious.

Permalink Mark Unread

Glutting oneself at the feast and rolling all the way to bed is also an important Hogwarts student tradition.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay is pretty sure that last bit's false.

Permalink Mark Unread

Listen. Who are the authentic students at this table?

Permalink Mark Unread

"I thought I was supposed to look out for myself, here? Make sure I'm not being pressured."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Who said that? I never said that. That doesn't sound like anything I would ever say."

Permalink Mark Unread

"So you'll take responsibility for me, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I will definitely see that you make it to the appropriate sleeping arrangement safely."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

"Maybe we should get you a pet, first. Practice responsibility."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I don't think there's enough time left before the end of the feast."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I might have to avoid turning over all responsibility for myself to you, then. At least for tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pout.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Perhaps you can work your way up. Over time."

Permalink Mark Unread

Morose sigh.

"If you say so..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It's best to do these things properly. No sense jumping in feet first to being wholly responsible for another person."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Are you accusing me of having sense?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I am. Indeed, your sense is one of your best qualities!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How dare!"

Permalink Mark Unread

"How dare I flatter you?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, exactly. I'm supposed to be the one in charge of the weaknesses tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That seems to contraindicate giving you responsibility, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I've been very responsible with the weaknesses."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Hm... Trying to convince me to do silly things doesn't seem the height of responsibility..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Not even when compared with all the other things I could be convincing you to do?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Depends on what those things are."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Exactly. If you apply a little imagination, you can see that this is the best of all possible worlds."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm not that convinced..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sniff. "Sounds like a you problem."

Permalink Mark Unread

She laughs.

"Perhaps you can convince me it'd be better than the world where I go about my business under my own judgement, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Sounds like a lot of work for this time of night..." Yawn.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Then maybe you can talk me into it tomorrow."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we'll see."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Off to bed, then?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"It is about that time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'll see you tomorrow, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good night."

Off to bed.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema at least can accompany her.

Permalink Mark Unread

Alas for Fay that she has declined this honor.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We'll get her eventually."

Permalink Mark Unread

"You think so?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think she's just playing hard to get. Or in denial."

Permalink Mark Unread

Happy blush and shoulder bump.

Permalink Mark Unread

She shoulder bumps back, giggling. "You're cute."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, well, so're you."

Permalink Mark Unread

She slings her arm around Ellie's shoulders, pulling her wife in for a kiss on the cheek. "I'm pretty sure you're the cutest one here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I won't argue that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"In the whole world, though I'll admit me and Fay are pretty close."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Strong contenders for second place."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Though we'll never reach first."

Permalink Mark Unread

"The consolation prize is getting to observe me all the time."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I do rather appreciate being behind you."

Permalink Mark Unread

"As well you should," she says with a flirty shake of her hips.

Permalink Mark Unread

Kiss.

(It is getting pretty late, though... And very sadly, bed sharing is against Hogwarts rules...)

Permalink Mark Unread

Maybe they can pick up tomorrow, then.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah. (Goodnight kiss.)

Permalink Mark Unread

Until morning.

Permalink Mark Unread

School's tougher than it had been, but not too much so. The students are broadly nervous - one muggleborn, not someone the Potter-Cantas know well, was murdered after the breakout, her and her whole family. Other students lost family - mostly extended, but the wizarding community is tight knit, and even one death can send out echoes. The students with Death Eater sympathies are being louder - Fay's breaking her record for almost never handing out detentions. She or Scarlet catch a lot of the increasing bullying.

The Order meetings continue, and Fay's unable to get the girls to quite so many as they had been attending - but they should be able to fairly regularly attend any that happen to fall on a Friday night.

After the first of those, while Fay is catching up with mostly mundane gossip with friends, Dumbledore approaches Ellie.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes, Professor?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good evening, Miss Potter. I'd wanted to talk to at least you, if not also Miss Canta, Professor Reynolds, Miss Black, and Miss Delacour if they can spare the time, about Voldemort and his past," he says, hands folded behind his back, smiling a little. "I don't think it's useful enough for a full Order meeting, but I'm hoping it'll help find his horcruxes at the very least."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Oh. That might be good to know, yeah."

Permalink Mark Unread

He nods. "If you have time tonight, we can discuss it while we're all here."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I think so."

She lets the others know Dumbledore wants to talk.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix, Fay, and Anathema are all available right now.

Permalink Mark Unread

As is Elodie.

What does the old man have to say for himself?

Permalink Mark Unread

Privacy spells, first, in a drawing room that's been cleared of portraits and dubious artifacts, and then a summary, in chronological order, of Tom Riddle's life, noting which parts he observed, which parts he's uncertain on...

Tom Riddle was born to a pureblood witch who fell in love with a muggle man - dosing him with a love potion when he rejected her advances. They were married, and she had his child, and stopped dosing him after Tom Riddle Jr. was born - only to be rejected. She killed herself, and the baby Tom was left at an orphanage in muggle London. Tom grew up a cruel and curious child, prone to hurting others to see what they'd do, or in revenge for slights both real and imagined. Dumbledore's been trying to track down locations Tom frequented or might have found significant in the muggle world, though it's slow going - still, he includes those in his narrative, including what he knows about Tom's relationship to them.

The boy came to Hogwarts at the usual time, being Sorted into Slytherin after some debate with the Hat. He was an outsider initially, a muggleborn as far as anyone knew, but he quickly built up a small cult of personality among his fellow students, extending even to the pureblood supremacists. He was arrogant, and most of Dumbledore's clues about him come from this time - he tended to let a lot more slip. Dumbledore thinks he used Myrtle's death to create his diary's horcrux, and he suspects Tom might've tried to use significant or ironic deaths for the others. Dumbledore believes he formed the plan to use the Founders' artifacts as horcruxes during this time, too, since he convinced the Grey Lady to tell him where Ravenclaw's Diadem was hidden while still a student.

Tom Riddle's trail starts petering out within a few years of his graduation - he traveled widely in search of knowledge, before returning in Dumbledore believes the late sixties to build up for the Death Eater war.

Relatedly - and he strengthens the privacy spells - Dumbledore believes Voldemort might have obtained Slytherin's Locket from his mother's family, since they claimed to be descended from Slytherin and used that as proof when questioned. He thinks Voldemort used the murder of his maternal grandfather and uncle to create that particular horcrux. He's not positive where Voldemort hid the locket, but -

A spy of his in Voldemort's ranks has reported that Voldemort has started a man hunt with his most trusted lieutenants, searching for what Dumbledore believes is the Locket. It's likely not where Voldemort left it - possibly making it harder to find, but also likely leaving it under fewer deadly protections.

Permalink Mark Unread

The locket seems the place to start, then. They can keep an eye on the Death Eater hunt while conducting their own.

Permalink Mark Unread

So diadem, cup, locket- Has there been any sign of Gryffindor's sword?

Permalink Mark Unread

A pause, and: "I've located it and removed some of the protections, but it's proving difficult to destroy - Gryffindor seems to have protected his sword rather more thoroughly than any of the other Founders protected their items. There's also a political matter, in that it was goblin made originally, and I might need to consult with them to get past its protections - and they likely won't want the underlying sword damaged."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could that turn them against him? If he made their sword into a horcrux."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Possibly. They already largely dislike him, but are officially staying out of the war - they don't like either side, sadly."

Permalink Mark Unread

"That would be too much to hope for."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Still, your point that it might sway them against him is a very good one."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Could we tell them they can have the sword back if they kill the horcrux in it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

He smiles a little. "I'd want to be involved at least some - enough to determine that does happen, since the horcruxes are known to be able to possess those near them. They also would find it... Insulting, really, to be asked to perform extra labor to have their property returned to them." He glances away, humming. "They'll likely be best pleased by returning it with repayment for the extended time it was overdue, and an extra bonus for damages..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"A considerable amount of damages. The cup did not survive very well."

Permalink Mark Unread

He inclines his head. "The short term cleaner solution is avoiding telling them about it, but, well. That requires me being able to handle it alone."

"Does Fiendfyre not work?" Fay asks.

Dumbledore shakes his head. "I tried that. It doesn't - perhaps not too shockingly, since Hogwarts itself is immune to that spell."

Fay frowns. "The Killing Curse?"

"I haven't tried," Dumbledore admits, "It's not my strongest spell, and I'm suspicious some of the wards on it might be reflective in nature."

...Sigh. "Easy enough to put on a shiny piece of metal..." Fay says. "And it makes sense if you're taking a sword to a wand fight, to have something you can parry with."

"Exactly so," Dumbledore says. "Undoing the wards is an ongoing issue - and one problem is that the sword absorbs the properties of anything it slays, and possibly outright anything it's placed in... And I'm not sure if Voldemort was able to get the horcrux woven into that spell."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Basilisk venom?" Ellie offers. "That's also supposed to kill everything. Could milk Gormlaith and stick the sword in a tub of it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Huh," Fay says. "I'm not familiar with the sword's exact lore yet, but..." She turns to Dumbledore, who has his bushy eyebrow raised.

"A rather excellent idea, Miss Potter," he says. "I believe it likely enough to try, and also I doubt it'll make the situation worse - basilisk venom can additionally degrade anchored magic, which will make the protections easier to remove even if the horcrux itself isn't destroyed."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "We'll collect some when we go back, then."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Is there anything else tonight?" Fay asks Dumbledore.

He shakes his head, and - "But if you all are willing to stay up, we can start working on the venom for the sword. I'll need special containers first, but I should be able to Transmute those."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah, we can go get it tonight."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Alright. Thank you."

He then thanks Bellatrix and Elodie for their time, and notes that getting them into Hogwarts would likely be a bit prohibitive.

Permalink Mark Unread

Naturally. They'll wait for news.

Permalink Mark Unread

He'll return here after if they want to wait around, yes.

(And back to Hogwarts with the others - they can go through his office, since he modified the Hogwarts wards to let him floo straight to Grimmauld Place.)

Permalink Mark Unread

And once they get the containers, she and Anathema can pay a visit to the Chamber and Gormlaith.

Permalink Mark Unread

Gormlaith is a bit grouchy about being milked - it makes her teeth ache - but she's actually rather curious about the idea of horcruxes, and especially about the idea of dropping 'that berk Gryffindor's' sword into a vat of her venom. (She doesn't have strong negative emotions towards him - he was perfectly nice - but, well, he was really dumb and yet somehow got a really cool sword.) She insists on examining the sword while she's being milked - that requires a bit of juggling, since the sword is extremely cursed and Anathema's the only one who can meet her gaze without dying. Dumbledore ends up laying the sword out on a platform with rods poking out from it to keep anyone from getting too close, near enough where Anathema's doing the milking for Gormlaith to examine it. Everyone else backs up behind an opaque barrier while Gormlaith emerges to be milked, Fawkes cooing uncertainly from Dumbledore's right shoulder, constantly craning his head to eye the Headmaster (who, it turns out, has what look like wrist-brace gloves on, limiting his mobility, especially in his right hand - he smiles wanly when Anathema's gaze lingers. He says he's managed to give himself writer's wrist, and at his age Poppy thinks he should just brace it and let it rest, rather than keep straining the nerve by repeatedly healing it when he'll just get it inflamed all over again).

Soon enough they have enough venom to submerge the sword entirely. Dumbledore conjures a one way mirror for Gormlaith to lurk behind so she can watch the proceedings without hurting anyone, and then -

Carefully, having everyone else stand well back behind protective barriers - Dumbledore hasn't been letting anyone else near the sword, let alone touch it or anything it's wrapped in - Dumbledore lowers the sword into the venom, unwrapping it as he goes. It slides in with a hiss and a cloud of dark smoke that flares around Dumbledore - he's keeping it from him somehow, but he's focusing more on the sword, more on keeping it from the spectators -

The venom seeps into the sword even before it's submerged like ink into a sponge, and the sword begins to scream -

(Ellie's scar has been hurting the entire time she's been near the sword, even with it so well shielded. Now her head feels like it's splitting open, the scream echoing through her mind.)

Dumbledore gets it under the surface of the venom without touching anything, and the venom boils and hisses - Dumbledore steps back - the scream rises into a shriek, a dying gasp of a wail, and then fades, and winds swirl around them, preventing the released smoke from reaching anyone but Dumbledore.

The air clears, Dumbledore drops the barrier for the non-basilisk spectators, and Fawkes flies over to him with an annoyed shriek, trying to get him to stop coughing, tilt his head back, and open his mouth enough Fawkes can cry into it. (This works, at least.)

Permalink Mark Unread

She almost gasps with the way the pain disappears.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema had been holding her already, but she squeezes now, stroking Ellie's back.

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Think that worked."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "It sure seemed like when the diary was destroyed..."

Still, she hangs back with Ellie.

Permalink Mark Unread

Fay approaches instead, checking on Dumbledore briefly then helping him retrieve the sword from the pool of venom - the system they set up ahead of time has Dumbledore Transmuting vents in the bottom of the container to empty the venom into another below it (with the intent of sealing and burying the mess in case it's cursed). That leaves the sword behind, which - looks untouched, except for a dark green shine along its blade.

Fay and Dumbledore take turns casting diagnostic spells over it, piecing apart the runic wards...

"The horcrux is destroyed, I'm fairly sure," Fay calls out. "And it looks like all of Voldemort's additional wards were removed, but none of the original ones. Still..." She glances at Dumbledore.

Who shrugs, cautions her to stand back with Fawkes, and picks up the sword with his left hand. It rises readily for him, blade gleaming more than it should in the Chamber's low light, and he smiles at it, giving it a few test swings. "The sword does indeed appear free from any influence," he says, cheerfully.

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yep."

It's kind of pretty, for a sword.

Permalink Mark Unread

Anathema's eyeing it like someone with a very healthy appreciation for sharp bladed objects. "What're you going to do with it now?"

He smiles at her. "I'll keep it for observation for a little while, to make sure there's nothing hiding out in it, then, well - if it's clean, I suppose the right thing to do is return it to the goblins."

Anathema nods, definitely not pouting. "Okay."

Dumbledore chuckles, and - "I do believe it's getting to be past curfew, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Will you write us a pass?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Of course," he says, conjuring himself a sheath for the sword and then two passes. "These are good for the night," he says, "Though I'd like to get to my own bed now."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Good night, Professor."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Goodnight," he says before strolling off with Fawkes towards the usual exit.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That was exciting."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah."

"Not what I expected this morning, but... We've got some good information and another horcrux down."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Go us."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We know about the Diadem, suspect the Locket... That makes for five known or suspected horcruxes, three of which we've destroyed."

"It seems more likely now to me that he was going for a numerologically significant number of both horcruxes and anchors... While every number up to twenty has significance, and many higher numbers do, the greatest collisions are among the lower numbers..." She sighs. "It's an active work, but - I think he likely has an even number of created horcruxes, an odd number of anchors - since his body counts as one - and one of the counts will be a multiple of three. An odd number of horcruxes could work, but would be more unstable... If he's not going nuts, I'm betting he made either six or eight horcruxes - six would be more in line with western traditions, which he seems to favor, and given his personal numerology, seven anchors is more directly significant for him... But eight horcruxes and nine anchors would probably be the most solid."

"But that's all guesswork."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We can keep our eyes open for another one or three, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

"It'd be really good if we could know for sure."

Permalink Mark Unread

"I'm trying to find a way to do that... Especially since 'kill his main body and have him stop showing up' is demonstrably not reliable."

Permalink Mark Unread

"But if he has to start a hunt himself if one of them goes missing..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"He likely doesn't have an automatic sense of where they are, or if they're even intact... If he noticed that it was already missing, rather than noticing alarm wards being tripped, he's likely also checking on them..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"And if there was a way to find them remotely he'd just do that."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Unfortunate when it comes to us finding them."

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yeah..."

Permalink Mark Unread

Sigh. "We'll figure it out."

Permalink Mark Unread

Suppose they'd better head for bed, for now.

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Fay can walk them to their dorm, if they'd like.

Permalink Mark Unread

That'd be nice, sure.

Permalink Mark Unread

She smiles softly and does so, wishing them a good night when they part at the statue.

Permalink Mark Unread

And a good night to her as well!

Permalink Mark Unread

Smile.

Permalink Mark Unread

School drags on, as does the slow fight against Voldemort. In a little bit of interest, about two months later Bellatrix tells the Potter-Cantas after the latest Order meeting that she thinks she's gotten the Grimmauld Place library chill enough they can safely go through it - with her supervision, at least at first.

Permalink Mark Unread

That'd be fun to explore.

Permalink Mark Unread

Yeah! There's bound to be lots of cool books... Maybe some rare or unique ones, even.

Permalink Mark Unread

That was her thought...

So, onwards and upwards, to the second floor library - it's pretty big, easily taking up most of the floor, and despite cleaning and general attempts to get some light in the room, it's really dim. The dust levels have gone down a lot, though, and it no longer looks quite like a looming, hungry maw. Still, Bellatrix warns them not to touch anything without checking with her first.

The books they pass do look very interesting - Bellatrix pulls down a few for them - and there's so much it'll likely take more than one visit to get these all catalogued. Many of the books are fragile, too. Many old, and either from very limited prints or outright hand written - there's a good number of inherited spell development journals, which, jackpot.

(And the back, despite being ostensibly near the windows, is the dimmest. An uneasy air hangs around those shelves, a grime that can't seem to be removed choking the air. The back wall's given over to desks with artwork above them - the only intact one is a small secretary-style desk shoved into one corner, barely visible in the gloom.)

(It's headache inducing, really, especially the nearer Ellie gets.)

Permalink Mark Unread

"...Get Fay," she says, pressing a hand to her forehead.

Permalink Mark Unread

Bellatrix frowns. "Anathema - "

Permalink Mark Unread

"On it," she says, even as she's turning to run from the room.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Bellatrix moves to stand by Ellie, drawing her wand. "You alright?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Scar hurts. Near the desk. Feels like a horcrux."

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Fay rushes in - gets a quick situation update from Bellatrix - and, "Alright. Ellie, can you back up to the hallway? I might still need you, but I'd like some space. Anathema, can you get Dumbledore?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods, running out again.

Permalink Mark Unread

She retreats to the hall.

Permalink Mark Unread

And Fay and Bellatrix begin casting soft detection spells - small wards - and then turns to talk to Dumbledore when he arrives.

They work together, the three of them intent on the desk - the wood peels away, slowly -

And there's a soft 'pop' by Ellie, as the house elf, Kreacher, Apparates in, ears back and face drawn. "What are they doing?" he demands.

Permalink Mark Unread

"We think there's a Dark object in the desk that needs destroying."

Permalink Mark Unread

He pauses, eyeing her. "It does. Master Regulus's last wish was destroying it."

Permalink Mark Unread

"-Where did he get it? Do you know what it is?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"A bad thing. It was the Dark Lord's. He put it in a horrible cave, but Master Regulus was smart, and he figured out where it was." Kreacher makes a distressed noise while intently watching the three dismantle the desk. "It was in a potion, that couldn't be vanished or poured out or reached through, and Kreacher said Kreacher would drink it, even though it hurt, but Master Regulus made Kreacher give the potion to Master Regulus. Master Regulus told Kreacher to take the locket and destroy it and made Kreacher leave, even though the horrible things were coming to kill him - none of Kreacher's magic could destroy it, so Kreacher hid it."

He turns to stare at her again. "Are you going to destroy it?"

Permalink Mark Unread

"Yes," she says, voice firm. "Maybe not me personally, but we are going to destroy it."

Permalink Mark Unread

He pauses. Then: "I still don't like you."

And he strides into the room to tell the three wizards - who've since noticed the conversation - that the locket has no protections around it, and what he knows of the protections on it - it's safe to handle, but tries to mind control you if you open it.

That speeds up the process - but they're still very cautious about putting it in a secure box. They thank him, Bellatrix the most awkwardly, Fay the most sincerely, and promise to involve him in the locket's destruction.

"We can just try the Killing Curse," Fay says, "But basilisk venom worked on the last one and is likely safest - nothing to rebound or reflect, no connection forged to the caster..."

Permalink Mark Unread

"We still have the last batch, right?"

Permalink Mark Unread

She nods. "Disposing of it's been hard, so, yes. It's still potent."

Off to that, then?

Permalink Mark Unread

Unless someone has an extremely convincing reason to delay. (In which case they should check for Imperius and Polyjuice.)

Permalink Mark Unread

None of those, no.

Back to Hogwarts with them, then, to the part of the Chamber they've secured the seal vat of basilisk venom in. There's a similar protecting the audience process as last time, and Dumbledore fetches Fawkes on the way.

And then Dumbledore lowers the locket into the venom - removes it when that has no effect, opens it, grimaces -

And drops it into the vat.

The smoke billows out angrily, it sizzles - and the venom can be easily drained away, leaving an apparently horcrux-less, undamaged locket. (Kreacher is possibly crying.)

Dumbledore sighs, slumping against a column.

"One more down," Fay says, softly.

Permalink Mark Unread

"That'd be more comforting if we knew how many more to go."

Permalink Mark Unread

Hug and hair pet.

"With any luck, it'll be over soon."

Permalink Mark Unread

Huff. "Yeah. Luck."

Permalink Mark Unread

She strokes Ellie's hair.

"Perhaps also a lot of hard work from us. We're good at that, though."

Permalink Mark Unread

Pleased hum. "We are."

Permalink Mark Unread

Tighter hug. "Come on. Let's get you to bed."

Permalink Mark Unread

"All right." Off.

Permalink Mark Unread

She sees Ellie to bed, then falls back into the surreal routine of this war, of teaching... No other major leads on horcruxes pop up over the next few months, even as Death Eater attacks escalate, Voldemort moving more and more boldly - Dumbledore is talking to the school board about keeping Hogwarts open year round -

The war, at least, provides some chances - and Voldemort's Diadem-possessed body begins making appearances. Just enough that someone with a clever mind and a habit of war can track them, can begin to predict them...

She and Dumbledore go out together, alone, to try to corner the Diadem.

Their guess is right. The Diadem... Does not go down very easily, but they've wounded the body, and Fay's most importantly gotten a solid enough look she might be able to track it. She's gotten a good feel for its fighting style, too.

Dumbledore's wounded, but - nothing unrecoverable. She gets him away from the fight, gets him leaning against a tree, begins stripping his robes from the wound...

And his hand on her arm stops her.

"Albus?" she asks, voice soft.

"I'm not sure it's of any use, Fay," he says. There's something odd in his eyes. "The wound's deeper than it looks. And - I've been dying for some time." A wry smile. "I'm weaker than I look."

She lowers her hand, regarding him seriously. "What do you mean, dying?"

He sighs - and undoes the brace on his right arm, revealing a black, crackled mess. Fay examines it, expression more calm than she feels.

"I was a fool," he says. "And I paid for it. Gryffindor's Sword had far more protections initially than I let on - and no medicine nor curse-breaking has been able to halt this."

"Ah," Fay murmurs. "Still, we can keep you alive a bit longer - I know this sounds mercenary, but even dying, you're useful to the war effort."

He hums, slumping a bit. "If you must... But these two curses together - I'm afraid of how they'll interact, and - there's a lot I haven't passed on."

She nods, seeing where he's going. "You want to update me," she says, voice frank. "In case you do die now."

A wan smile, and - "Yes," he says. "And if I don't, I can hand off to you more thoroughly later."

She begins work on at least stabilizing him, but does listen intently, nodding to indicate she's ready.

And he meets her gaze and within the privacy of their minds begins to explain - all the Order's assets, the cells she isn't aware of, the spies she doesn't know, identification codes - stashes - bank accounts, she's the heir to many of them but some require passwords - contingencies he's woven into Hogwarts - contacts, allies, people who aren't quite on their side but can be swayed to lend this or that small aid - more informal networks, especially of information, his brother's inn and more besides - a prophecy -

All his miscellaneous leads on the other horcruxes. He agrees with her that Voldemort most likely set out to make six. He suspects the last intentionally made one might be Voldemort's serpent familiar, Nagini, who never seems to leave Voldemort's side...

(His mind is growing weak. Tired.)

He thinks Voldemort intentionally made six horcruxes. He thinks there's one more - is sure there's one more - made accidentally, the night Voldemort tried to kill little baby Ellie Potter - all the research he's done on removing a horcrux from a living host without killing that host, everything that's lead him to fear it's impossible -

(It's not, precisely, that he's planning to kill Ellie.)

(Just that he thinks it might be necessary for her to die, really.)

Fay's hands stop working on Dumbledore's wounds. Her mind goes blank. Sure.

And a moment later -

Fay looks down at Dumbledore's cooling body, standing when she had been kneeling. Looks at her own raised wand and then at the pale wand lying menacingly by Dumbledore's limp hand. He didn't draw it. She's pretty sure of that. It's just... Ready to be used anyways.

Numbly, she picks it up, and it hums happily in her hand, to the great annoyance of her usual wand.

Then, softly and with feeling:

"Fuck."
