It's an ordinary, quiet night. The . . . patrons, or whatever they are, of the lab equipment shop downstairs, took off about forty-five minutes ago.
There's silence, mostly. You can only be out at night in Sothis if you have business. But there's some business. Every so often a party passes under Katie's window. Their conversation is mostly what Katie has become accustomed to thinking of as "focused", though occasionally some is just downright tense or revelrous.
Wind. Distant insects. Dogs.
Something shuffles downstairs.
And continues to shuffle.
"Are we good?" The voice is insistent, alto, and right underneath Katie. And it's female.
"Yes, fine". Higher. If Katie knows what female halflings sound like, it sounds like that.
The shuffling moves deeper into the shop. A glass clinks. Laughter starts, whispering at first, then merely hushed.
"Oh my god." A third voice.
"All this stuff is fake, you know. This and this and this used to be one bespoke fixture."
"Fuck."
Whoever it is is going through the merchandise.
Expensive, heavily regulated merchandise. Katie's parent have only been in Ulunat for two weeks, but she's picked up that the proprietors of this place have gone to a moderate effort to secure it against thieves.
"That's what I'm—she cares more that you're her slave, than that you're a woman. They're not all like her, but, like, I don't know. I was just gesturing at this general feature that relationships seem to have regardless of whether they're between a man and a woman or not. That's all I was trying to say."
She's getting bored and dejected. If Katie insists on being equals with her all the time, and never getting devoured or demolished, she wonders if she made a mistake by assuming the posture of Katie's lover-caretaker. It's stupid and wasteful of Tazich to have put herself in this position, but Katie may be little more than a limp ball of dough to Tazich's lady parts if she only wants to be fed and fucked supportively. And Tazich isn't going to be wifed up by a limp ball of dough.
"I know, I know, I'm a fucking imbecile, but like, what precisely are you getting at with regards to us?"
"Most mortals from Golarion are attracted to people as objects to use, or attracted to people who see them as objects to use."
"Well I don't know, regardless of whether or not that's true, most people are attracted to members of the opposite sex, and yet."
"Okay, well I'm saying, no, you can't count on me to be special like you in that sense, I'm sorry. If you need me to build you up strictly like a supportive, well-intentioned architect, I can do that, for the cult, but it probably won't turn me on. In particular.
But that's just within the confines of that specific stupid metaphor I used, and if we forget that and just keep acting as usual we'll probably find each other as hot as ever.
You are hot."
Tight squeeze of Katie's hips against her.
"Well like, what exactly do you want to do to me, then? Were you lying about wanting me to get strong? I'm sorry for ruining the vibe by being stupid, probably our desires aren't actually all that different and I just suck at communicating."
Gods, she's so cute when she's nervous.
She squeezes Katie's ass and murmers into her neck.
"I don't know. I want to build you up and wreck you and build you up and wreck you again. And maybe you can do the same thing to me, if you can figure out how. Really, truly, don't worry about it too much. Just don't expect . . . whatever expectation was implied by asking if I wanted you to be structurally sound and needing to know what I meant otherwise, and not understanding when it was . . . less friendly."
Nuzzle. "I'm curious what precisely you mean by 'wreck', but it does sound fun as long as I'm being reassembled afterward."
