It's an ordinary, quiet night. The . . . patrons, or whatever they are, of the lab equipment shop downstairs, took off about forty-five minutes ago.
There's silence, mostly. You can only be out at night in Sothis if you have business. But there's some business. Every so often a party passes under Katie's window. Their conversation is mostly what Katie has become accustomed to thinking of as "focused", though occasionally some is just downright tense or revelrous.
Wind. Distant insects. Dogs.
Something shuffles downstairs.
And continues to shuffle.
"Are we good?" The voice is insistent, alto, and right underneath Katie. And it's female.
"Yes, fine". Higher. If Katie knows what female halflings sound like, it sounds like that.
The shuffling moves deeper into the shop. A glass clinks. Laughter starts, whispering at first, then merely hushed.
"Oh my god." A third voice.
"All this stuff is fake, you know. This and this and this used to be one bespoke fixture."
"Fuck."
Whoever it is is going through the merchandise.
Expensive, heavily regulated merchandise. Katie's parent have only been in Ulunat for two weeks, but she's picked up that the proprietors of this place have gone to a moderate effort to secure it against thieves.
If you are Teg, you don't even need sound.
Although she did, in fact, hear their entire conversation.
She presents a dryish hunk of beef flank about half the length of her forearm.
She bags the mouse. She shifts back and forth and shrugs vaguely in Katie's direction. No, I'm not going to do whatever it is Tazich thinks I'm going to do.
"I... I don't want to bother you, but I just want to let you know that if you're having a bad time, I'm here to help in any way I can."
"You literally fed her last night. Your natural regeneration is only a cup of blood a day at best."
"I'm going to get bigger, so I can feed you more, and stronger, so I can capture people to feed you. You deserve to be sated." God she sounds stupid but Teg is SO SCRUNGLY.
"thanks but I already drink from Tazich and I'm not half sated so that's not really realistic"
there she didn't beg Tazich to feed on Katie yay!
"Tazich, remind me again why we don't move to Geb? From what I've heard, vampires there get on pretty well, what with all the human livestock slaves."
she is not Katie's lies are possibly well-meaning but particularly annoying
"may I go eat this mouse now" or do you have something else
"if you have something else you need to talk about I can come back, the mouse is just almost fresh right now"
She leads Katie a little away from the door, to be polite.
"She's right, you know. Three of me couldn't feed her. Why would you even say that?"
