They have a Toronto dungeon, which mostly seems pretty normal as dungeons go, but it is very dark and even floodlights won't quite cut it - it's got thick soot in the air cutting visibility even with full illumination to just a couple feet, and they'll want masks and goggles for it. The monsters, presumably, can figure out where things are in there, so the hope is that Vantage will also be able to and that with this information Traceless will be able to fetch people without any monsters knowing they might care to sneak up on him.

Well she'll need Traceless or somebody to find her one first and then she can hopefully daisy chain her way around and get an idea of the layout of the place.

Yep. He ventures in, festooned with high-powered lights, and - there's one. It looks like a salamander, like a giant black hellbender with too many legs and too many tails. It doesn't notice him, of course. "See it?"

"See it."

What kinda senses does it have?

A lot of them, actually. It's got something like tremorsense crossed with echolocation. It's got electroception and it can sense heat pretty finely too. Also it can just see straight through the soot like it's no more than a light haze.

"It's doing something fancy," he murmurs, dropping his voice, "or else there's four more of them trying to get a look at me and I haven't spotted those yet."

"It's got several exotic senses. Some kinda not-exactly-echolocation and electroreception and heat sensing. Also it can see right through all the soot. It's kind of neat actually."

"I think that probably accounts for the backlash. Okay, I'm gonna keep going in while you work on the map."

The dungeon's like a series of lava tubes, with larger caves and little black-water streams here and there. It's very three-dimensional, lots of ups and downs, but nothing steep enough that he's forced to fly.

"Probably yeah."

She bounces around the place trying to get a sense of the general layout to give others some kinda of a fighting chance of navigating the place while she's not around. And figure out where the victims are being stashed right now. And the core if she's lucky.

Then Traceless finds the boss monster.

It's a big salamander-dragon, and it breathes fire, and when it first does this he flings himself backward through a wall.

"Fuck - fuck I need to - can you figure out approximately which direction I need to bear, talk to me, please -"

Shit. She doesn't say that out loud.

"I'm here. To your left and then straight ahead a ways..." She'll keep talking and try to steer him clear of the monsters.

"It must just be constantly breathing fire, it definitely didn't know I was there, what the hell is it doing that for," he mutters, speech quick and pressured. "Up or down from here."

"Down. They're gonna have to bring in somebody who does shields if just sneaking up on it isn't safe."

"Or somebody fireproof. Ugh I gotta wipe off my goggles again. How far."

"Couple hundred meters through the tunnels. Two lefts and a right. I already let them know we're going on an emergency break as soon as you get back here, so we can just leave."

"Okay. Thank you. Sorry. Fuck, I hate my backlash, if you ever wind up having a peek at it you're gonna be like, ew."

"Hmm...I don't think so...maybe 'ow'."

"Yeah maybe, do you get pain feedback, does it hurt when you do - I make it do that as hard as I can because if it just hurts it's not fucking with my head quite so bad but I can't get it all out of my head -"

"I can get pain feedback. It's not pleasant but it doesn't actually hurt per se. You're almost there."

"It's like the thing that kills babies in neglectful orphanages, even if they're fed and warm, if nobody holds them they die of it, it feels like that, all over."

"...I'm gonna hug you okay. And I'm gonna take a look if you'll let me because I'm not that backlashed right now."

"I'll let you but you're gonna hate it because it's so hateable."
