Traceless climbs back up with a man harnessed to his back after about twenty minutes. The man is weeping and not responding to anything Traceless says, not that that stops him from trying periodically to say something reassuring or distracting.

"...Oh.  It sure looks like I can do something about that." She's already anticipating that this is going to suck.

There's just barely room for the man on the ledge; Traceless sets him down, carefully, and holds out his hands for Vantage to take.

She takes them and scraaaapes the sticky goop off. It's not cheap but she'll get it.

The victim stops silently weeping and starts sobbing more actively, but it seems like it might be a good sign. There's a medic on the inward side of the portal, who collects him and hops out with him in tow.

"Let me know when I should go get the next one," says Traceless. "Estimated another three in there right now, though of course it can grab another whenever."

"Three or four is going to be quite a bit. And the crying is...a problem. Don't let them cry on me." Handsqueeze. It seems like Traceless could maybe use a bit of a break too.

"I won't let them cry on you. The ladder will probably keep holding up but if it does break on me I'll have quite a lot of flying to do, and a vertical mineshaft isn't amazing for how my flight handles either, so I might wind up in a pretty bad way, but I'm making sure to leave enough slack that I won't be in outright danger. Hopefully we can clear the place while you've still got Compos Mentis's shield on you though."

"I have three alarms set on my phone and I'm checking on my watch regularly as well."

"Good, that's smart. I was really hoping that they'd be, you know, lonely also, what with having subjectively no human contact in a hundred years or whatever, but if that guy was he didn't react to it by talking to me at aaaaall, I might wind up chatty on the comms as I rack up backlash even though it's suuuuch a bad habit."

"At that point you'd go beyond 'lonely' I think. Even normal solitary confinement is not good for people's mental state."

"It really isn't but it could've shaken out that they were talky and it did not and I have told Paula that she should not try too hard to restrict my dungeons by this criterion but it still suuuuucks." Sigh.

Handsqueeze. "Probably you should get going. Shield time is running and Compos Mentis looked like he could use a full eight hours sleep so it would be good if we could get this batch."

"You're right." Deep breath. "Okay, here I go."

Down down down.

Waiting. Checking her watch. Keeping in touch on the comms.

"The acoustics of this place are spooky, I hope they grabbed some rocks in case it's just the rocks and we have exciting advances in soundproofing in a few years," he says through the comms.

"I should check whether the bats are doing echolocation, it seems like it wouldn't work well with the weird acoustics. Though I guess they don't actually need to be very precise, it's not like they're hunting for insects."

"Yeah, if that's cheap to check. I haven't run into enough of them to have a robust sense of whether I'm throwing off squeaks as well as eyesight."

"It's pretty cheap and I might be chaining through the place later to try and find the core anyway. Just need to also tap into their hearing for a little bit. Might even help if they can echolocate further then they can see."

"I guess it could only be absorbing certain pitch ranges or something."

"Maybe yeah. Does it open up any further down?"

"There's some variance in width, there's places where it juts out, places with alcoves - the victims are in the alcoves, generally - but it doesn't get dramatically wider or narrower anywhere."

"Are there like, mushrooms down there or anything?"

"I don't see any. It's not very visually interesting, I'm not sure there's even different kinds of rocks or anything."

"Not good for pictures then. Alas."

"Yeah, I'm snapping a handful but it's so drab. I'm not even gonna be wistful about it when they axe this one. If they do."
