"Same place you'd get clothes for a human. Are you going to be doing your own food shopping?"

"Ummm, I can if it makes things easier for you? I would sort of rather give you money to get more food, you have good taste in buying food."

"You haven't given me any money yet so I wasn't sure, how much do you have - what do you like -"

"Um, I liked the yogurt and the dates and that kind of fruit, I can't remember what it's called..." She describes it. "Here, this is how much I have, I should maybe keep the amount we need to get new clothes for Wood, although I guess we can earn more today."

"You, uh, don't actually have enough on hand for a wrap - you might get there today but probably not if I take much of this for groceries - fabric's expensive -"

"Mmm. I guess it's fine if it takes us longer, I'll know from Thoughtsensing if his owner comes anywhere near us– um, I'm not reading people's minds, it's just that people's auras feel a certain way, like how their faces look different, but I can sense it from further away before they see us."

"...okay. Uh, should I pay myself back or just take enough to cover what I expect you to eat going forward?"

"Um, you can pay yourself back - if that's more money than I have I can take some from today's."

"It's not quite." It's close though, she takes most of the money, counting under her breath.

After that, Jisa heads out with Wood to see if the furniture store has work for them again today or if they need to look elsewhere.

The furniture store is happy to have a Wood on hand to customize and adjust things.

Perfect! Then Jisa is, again, content to sit there and occasionally chat with Wood in Mindspeech, or with store personnel and customers out loud, since she's now reasonably proficient in the language and more practice is always good.

People want to know where she's from - she doesn't look too exotic but she doesn't look local local and there's the accent. And whether she hunted the Wood herself or bought it. And to warn her that some amulets have proven themselves to be unreliable and there's some kind of overseas criminal running around, watch out.

Jisa does her best to make up answers to these questions that seem plausible; she manages to withhold from reading anyone's mind to check, though she does lean some on her Receptive Empathy. She thanks them for the warning and answers with the appropriate concerned-but-curious expression and questions; she makes up a vague answer about being from a farmland area thataways; she claims to have hunted Wood herself, which arguably isn't false, but also says she partly just got lucky, which is also true.

They congratulate her on her luck! Somebody offers to buy him off her.

Not right now but she'll think about their offer, she tells them very politely.

"You got an asking price? I can ask about going higher."

"Oh, er - well, I'm not sure I want to sell him at all. Um," she tries to think of the sort of reason that would be hard to argue with, "my mother says I shouldn't."

"Well, you tell her how much you could get for it, see what she says."

"All right, er, I'll definitely do that, thank you."

This is a very irritating consequence to come out of talking to people, but Jisa likes talking to people, and so she ends up doing it anyway throughout the rest of the day. Every so often she pokes Wood in Mindspeech again and asks if he wants to stop.

:Do you have another idea to get money?:

:I'm...sure I could think of one. If this is unpleasant for you. I, just - I feel like I should keep reminding you that I'm not forcing you to work for me, since you're...used to being someone's slave...:

:I could fly away. But I'd just get caught again:

:Mmm. I'm sorry:

:It's not your fault:
