It only needs to be a teeny amount of salt, Jisa thinks.

She can summon the water elemental! It's easier than getting the khamsin. She gets a little figure that seems to be made of dewdrops and ice crystals, and it's very delighted by the glass ornament.

She can't get Air at all, despite holding the summoning-call for quite a long time.

She eventually gets Fire, which she has the most natural resonance with, but it does feel like she needs to reach very far for it, and the little sandaar, when it arrives, seems even more confused than the earth-elemental did, and doesn't want to stay long, although it is very fascinated by Fire's halo and peppers Jisa with questions about it.

Fire wants to pick up and hold the sandaar, may he?

Jisa asks the sandaar; it's confused but also curious, and consents that she can let Fire into its magic summoning-circle in order to pick it up, as long as Jisa promises that the fire-alien won't harm it.

Fire doesn't harm it, just scoops it and pets it.

Awwww.

When it's ready to go Fire sets it back down.

Jisa makes it a doorway back to its home plane and then closes it and takes down her circle and flops back on the floor. "I learned a lot from that but I'm so tired."

"Well, if you don't need to organize your notes while it's fresh in your mind or anything you can sleep - I'll go return Fire and Penumbra."

"I should write a couple things down but then–" jaw cracking yawn, "sleep."

Maurabel goes and puts Fire and Penumbra back in the elemental barracks. Comes back and gets ready for bed.

Jisa is by this point fast asleep on the floor.

Maurabel drapes her spare blanket over her and gets in bed.

Jisa wakes up, yawns, rolls over, and then remembers the night before. "Oh–" She catches herself and bites back the exclamation in case the others are still asleep, and scrabbles for her notes.

Maurabel rolls over but doesn't wake. "Pomegranate."

Jisa giggles, quietly, and then goes back to reading through her notes - she feels like she almost had it last night but she was also barely keeping her eyes open while she got down her minimal notes, and wasn't sure if they would make any sense to her in the morning...

Maurabel sits up a minute later. "Morning." She heads for her pantry cupboard. Retrieves bread and more bread. "I need to go shopping."

"All right. I was thinking I might try a Gate home today. I think I have it mostly figured out."

"If it works, what will be the observable results?"

"There would be a glowing doorway where the other end is somewhere else. Here - I can show you an example Gate just from here to here." She puts one threshold on Maurabel's doorway and the other against the wall. She's very fast at it.

"Okay, I think we should do that somewhere out away from the city. We could say it was a Shine application but it would be a kind of pointless Shine application."

"Making doorways from one place to another would be pointless? In Valdemar it's considered extremely valuable and they spent years trying to build a permanent Gate-threshold so they could do it more!"

"If it were an illusion, which with Shine it would be, it would be a pointless choice of illusion. If it actually were demonstrated to work, that would be even worse, people would be all over you."

"Oh, right, that makes sense."

"So we can go for a long walk sometime I don't have stuff to do all day, which is not today, I need to check out an Earth and shop and put in some time at the hospital."

"All right. I guess Wood and I can go do more chores to earn some food money - Wood, are you up for that? And maybe we can get a new wrap for him, too, although I don't know where I'd go to shop for clothes for an elemental."
